00:02:40She began her nursing career over 50 years ago in Grantshill Hospital,
00:02:45was one of the founders of a domiciliary care in the city, and retires on Tuesday.
00:02:52She was simply exceptional.

00:04:48The charity, DePaul, is a national charity which supports people who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness.
00:04:55DePaul's Foyle Haven service has been operating in this city for over 20 years.
00:05:01Foyle Haven is a harm reduction, low threshold day centre for those people who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness.
00:05:09Generally as a result of alcohol or substance abuse or poor mental health.
00:05:15On average 25 to 30 people attend the day centre every single day.
00:05:20365 days of the year for a hot meal, a shower, laundry facilities or simply to get fresh clean clothing.
00:05:30A wide range of supports are provided in the centre such as recreational activities, health related activities including counselling, educational workshops and advice on housing and financial matters.
00:05:42Last year Foyle Haven supported 246 people with their holistic needs.
00:05:48The staff in Foyle Haven are highly trained and they perform life saving intervention on an almost daily basis.
00:05:56Such as the administration of Naloxone which reverses the effects of an opiate drug overdose.
00:06:04Through this intervention, hard to believe, staff successfully saved the lives of 20 people in this city last year.
00:06:14There you are.

00:08:25I will keep it short I promise. Every time I do a speech I try to break my own speech record so here goes.
00:08:31When I sat down to read this I recalled an informal chat that I had many years ago
00:08:35during a lull in the election coming to Tablemore Sports Complex with one of my candidates.
00:08:39I asked him why possess people who won't do politics?
00:08:42People give off about you. You get calls at all hours of the day and night.
00:08:46You get blamed for everything and your life's not your own.
00:08:49And this politician looked at me and said, she's journalists are just the same.
00:08:53At a point there I was stumped to be honest.
00:08:56Because people in our corner of the world aren't exactly shy in coming forward to tell you exactly what they think.
00:09:01Most people have no problem speaking up for themselves and for each other
00:09:04except that is when it comes to their own achievements.
00:09:07And that's why awards like these matter.
00:09:10How often have you heard people say it's only a wee thing?
00:09:13Sure anybody would do the same or it was nothing really.
00:09:16How many extraordinary people do we all know who do so much for others without complaint or fuss?
00:09:21How many heroic, kind and selfless deeds go by unnoticed?
00:09:26And how many remarkable achievements go unrecorded?
00:09:29So that's what tonight is all about.
00:09:31The late, great Derry man working across him recognised the need to champion our place and our people when he started these awards.
00:09:38And to all the finalists gathered here, tonight is your night.
00:09:42This is about you, this is for you and this is to say thank you.
00:09:46Community spirit is alive and well here and many of the people in this room tonight embody that spirit.
00:09:52Throughout it's 252 year history the Derry Journal has been proud to highlight and champion this region and it's people
00:09:58and we are proud to continue that tradition today.

00:10:08I'm not one of the judges in these awards and I don't know who will win tonight
00:10:12but I do know there was a huge number of entries this year
00:10:16and having seen the list of nominees, I don't know if some of you have seen them as well,
00:10:20I have to say I did not envy the judges their task.
00:10:23The fact that each of you were nominated and have made it through to the finals makes you all winners in my eyes.
00:10:29You represent the best of us and as I invite our first citizen, the Lindsay Now Bar up to say a few words,

00:11:13As the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District, I am thrilled to express our heartfelt congratulations to all the nominees
00:11:21and extend a warm welcome to everyone gathered here.
00:11:25The Lifetime Achievement Award holds a very special place in our hearts.
00:11:30Sponsoring this award allows us to recognise and honour those who have dedicated their lives to making Derry and our district a better place.
00:11:41It is a testament to the enduring impact one person can have on their lives to many.
00:11:49And tonight we celebrate not just their achievement but their unwavering commitment to our community's growth and wellbeing.
00:11:58Reflecting on the significance of this award, it reminds us of the incredible contribution many by those who have walked this journey before us.

00:13:13Young people nominated for awards tonight exemplifies the vibrant spirit of our city and district.
00:13:21Their innovation, empathy and leadership show that they are not just our future leaders but our present tribal leaders.
00:13:29And I am so proud to see the list of some of the young people who have been nominated for this, like Mary Casey.
00:13:36Hello Mary Casey, I know you're somewhere around here.
00:13:39They bring fresh perspective and boundless energy reminding us that the future is bright with such capable hands guiding us.
00:13:48In Derry and the surrounding district, we have seen first hand the impact that our young people can have.
00:13:55Whether through community projects, educational achievements or act of kindness and encourage, they continuously demonstrate that they are ready to lead and inspire.
00:14:07Their actions speak volumes, showing that aid is no barrier to making a significant impact.
00:14:14We as a council are incredibly proud of their achievement and are committed to supporting their continuous growth and success.
00:14:22And to all the nominees, you are already winners in our eyes.
00:14:26Your dedication and hard work have brought you here. For that, we commend you.
00:14:32We wish you all the very best of luck tonight and encourage you to continue shining brightly in all your endeavors.

00:16:17This award recognises the outstanding artistic and cultural contribution made by a local person or group in the North West.
00:16:24The finalists are Claire McCarran, Elite Dance Academy. Claire and her team play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage and promoting diversity within their communities.
00:16:42Through the teaching of hip-hop and various dance styles and choreography, they celebrate the rich tapestry of human experience and honour the contributions of different cultures and communities.
00:16:53Next up is Jude Marle, Eurodiversity Training International. Jude has made a huge and impactful contribution to the Eurodiversity community as an advocate and mentor to many.
00:17:08He works tirelessly to support others and effect change. And the winner is... are you going to announce it or will I announce it?

00:18:16The second award is the Volunteer of the Year. Will you please welcome the Commercial Director of the Missouri Journal, Diane Burke, to present this award.
00:18:30This award is to recognise an individual who continually dedicates her time to help others. The finalists are Amritsar Singh Nagra.
00:18:45So there you are. Simon's selfishness, leadership and unwavering commitment to fostering unity and diversity within the community embody the spirit of this prestigious accolade.
00:18:55April Canning. April is an inspirational woman who encourages and inspires others. She gives up everything to ensure other people receive the best care possible and she makes a true difference to everyone she meets.
00:19:10Then there's Doyle O'Neill. The largest promoter of the weekly file hospice fundraising draw for more than 40 years, helped to raise an estimated £400,000 for the hospice. She's been the largest promoter of the weekly draw for the hospice since it was launched more than 40 years ago.
00:19:30Then there's Freya Coyle. Freya was born with 30% sight. She's registered blind. Freya, who's aged 14 years old today, has had a tough time at school with looking different and coping with light and learning materials in school.
00:19:47Freya joined Foresight a year ago as a volunteer to help this charity that aids people who are visually impaired and to hopefully meet people and give Freya more confidence.
00:19:58There you are. Happy birthday as well. Is there a birthday? Where are you? Is there a birthday? Yeah, happy birthday. Well done.
00:20:09And then we have Roisin Flynn. Roisin is Dementia's hidden hero. Persevering, inspirational, passionate, selfless with lion-like determination to improve lives. Tireless trailblazer in the Dementia field, volunteering, sometimes works 24-7, always showing deepest humility, compassion and enthusiasm.
00:20:34And the winner is Arma Jed Singh.

00:21:35I did want to say a few words because it's important that people don't think the word is what made it. From my point of view, it was good enough that somebody even thinks of me because a wife never does.
00:21:55What I want to say, ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests and most importantly, honoured volunteers, it is my great pleasure and privilege to stand before you today at the Dairy Journal Volunteer Award.
00:22:14This event is a celebration of spirit, selflessness, dedication and community that each of us embodies. No one person can improve our community on his own. He can add a little bit, I can only add a little bit.
00:22:30It's everybody together that's a lifeblood of our community. And tonight, I want to honour the incredible work that all the volunteers and the people of Dairy, whom I've been very fortunate to meet and have been friends with.
00:22:48People that mentored me, for example, I thought today of the late John Hume, who used to sit in my office and tell me to do something useful when I was a schoolboy.
00:23:00Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You know you vote for elections once a year, once every four years. But let me tell you something about volunteering.
00:23:16Volunteering, we vote every day about the kind of people, the kind of community you want to live in through your actions, your casting for your votes, kindness, compassion, progress.
00:23:36Your commitment to various causes, supporting elderly, youth, etc. Tonight, we want to celebrate not just the individual, me, I want to celebrate everybody tonight. Because they're the people that I came down to meet, the positive people.
00:23:54I said to Kevin many times in the Dairy Journal, I don't want to hear any negative news, Kevin. I only want to hear about the positive people. I hear enough of that every day of the week. And it's exceptional what the Dairy Journal have done, what the people of Dairy have done.
00:24:14And I can tell you in my recent documentary for the Punjabi feed, the number of documentaries I've done for, for example, pilgrimage, Monty Panasar, with the great work that Danny Quigley had done, I got Monty Panasar to talk about his mental illness in front of national TV that went international in pilgrimage. And he said one thing, we always keep our faith and we do good. Things will happen.
00:24:42So thank you very much for having me. It's wonderful that you've even thought about me. That would have been enough, let alone winning an award. That's for everybody. Thank you.
00:25:03Next up is the Fundraiser of the Year sponsored by Kingsbridge Foundation. Could you please welcome the Head of Marketing at Kingsbridge Healthcare Group, Clare Winter. Clare, will you come forward and help us with this?
00:25:17The charities and CICs will always need support to help raise vital funds for their cause. This award is to recognise those fundraisers who are employed by a charity or CIC.
00:25:31The finalists are, from Shining Light Pageant, Jennifer Taylor. Jennifer has organised and has run the Shining Light Pageant from 2019. Her mission was to shine a light on mental health within Northern Ireland, in particular Derry City.
00:25:49Jennifer has helped numerous charities by using her skills as a marketing manager to raise awareness of the different charities she helps to fundraise.
00:25:58Then there's Lynne Kelly of St Mary's College. Lynne has a heart of gold. She's a full-time teacher, mother, grandmother and manages to raise thousands of pounds for charity.
00:26:11She's excelled in her role as charities coordinator and this aspect of her character just shines through. She's passionate about promoting a can-do attitude so that her students make a positive difference in the world.
00:26:23Then there's Sarah Jane Scully. Sarah puts her heart and soul into raising money for charities that she thinks are extremely important.
00:26:32She's once again organising the Global Hope Pageant which will be held in August and the money raised through the pageant will be donated to the inner-city assistance team who help the people of Derry City every weekend and also the charities chosen by the FOEW International mentioned above.

00:27:23Well done Lynne, there you are. Now we move to the Inspirational Young Person of the Year sponsored by City of Derry Airport.
00:27:41Would you please welcome the Managing Director from the City of Derry Airport, Steve Fraser, to present this award. Steve.
00:27:46This is for a young person who's an inspiration to others no matter what. They'll be a credit to themselves and a role model for others around them.
00:27:59The finalists are Amy McLean. Amy is an inspirational, strong, motivated, positive young person, volunteer staff member for the youth club. She goes over and above for the young people of her community.
00:28:13Then there's Casey Derry. Casey is a 5th year pupil at St Mary's College and is the reigning UK Young Scientist of the Year 2023. She's an inspirational young person. She is a terrific role model and ambassador for science and for girls.
00:28:31Then there's Mary-Kate Tierney. Mary-Kate.
00:28:36Inspirational Young Person of the Year. Basically my work in science. I won UK Young Scientist just under a year ago and I've won at other science competitions over the years.

00:29:04Next up is the Carer of the Year Award sponsored by Specserver's Derry Crescent Link and Ferry Quay Street.
00:29:11Please welcome Maeve Walsh, Director, to come forward and to do this award.
00:29:20This award will be given to an individual or team who have shown commitment and perseverance in helping provide much needed care in this community.
00:29:29The finalists are April Canning. April is a mature final year student nurse who has four children, two of whom have learning disabilities. She's passionate about caring for people living with cancer.
00:29:43She felt she had the skills to help others and agreed to sign up and volunteer for the Look Good, Feel Better program.
00:29:50April is an engaging and enthusiastic carer, not only to patients but to her children and everyone she encounters.
00:29:57Next up is David Pentland, Northern Ireland Ambulance. David, very approachable, friendly, caring member of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
00:30:08He started his career 20 years ago and he has time for all his patients and puts everyone at ease.
00:30:13He has progressed in his role and is now one of the most respected members of his station.
00:30:18He has guided staff and patients through the troubles and has shown guidance for quick decision making in a rapidly changing city.
00:30:27Let us know who the winner is.

00:31:17Next award is the Sports Volunteer of the Year sponsored by Ben Maclean. Could I please ask Area Manager John Gallagher to present this award. John.
00:31:39This award is for those who voluntarily dedicate their time and resources to a club, association or a committee.
00:31:46The finalists are Alan Nash. Alan is unique, an effervescent ball of energy whose enthusiasm is highly contagious.
00:31:59Alan is the much loved caretaker at St John's Primary School, lollipop man, star of school shows, butt driver and gardener. No job is too big or too small for this man.
00:32:10Then there is Dr Noel Boyle. Dr Boyle has been a pillar of the community for many years. Not only is he a popular local GP but he gives his free time to many sporting organisations.
00:32:24These include Institute Football Club, Dirty City Football Club and Foil Swimming. Dr Boyle is hugely popular and has been in these voluntary roles for many, many years.
00:32:35Then we have Faye Leonard. Faye, an inspirational young lady at 16. She leads by example and shows respect in everything she does, a willingness to help coach and show new skills to all kids.
00:32:50Faye holds many titles in karate, from world champion to European title and local and national championships. She was out of her way to help others to achieve the best grade.
00:33:01Then there is Tom Doherty. Tom is an athletics coach who spends countless hours coaching athletes of all abilities in a positive, fun and learning environment.
00:33:18He exudes positivity, teamwork and a welcome to everyone. His dedication is such that he travels far and wide to support and encourage his athletes.
00:33:28Then there is Thomas Cusack. In 2023, Thomas led the Steelstone Brown Oaks ladies team to the Ulster Intermediate Championship. Along the way, the team won the Derry Senior Championship for the fourth consecutive year.
00:33:45In 2023, Steelstone also won the Derry Senior League title. The team are showing leadership within the club by participating in underage coaching and supporting all club initiatives, including much needed fundraising.
00:34:01The sense of community is driven from Thomas as the leader of the group.

00:35:19This award celebrates an individual who has made a significant contribution to the community. The finalists are...
00:35:26Simon has consistently demonstrated exemplary leadership and selflessness in serving the community. He's worked as an educator, entrepreneur, building his business in the community and mentoring others to build theirs. His character exemplifies selflessness and humility. His dedication to uplifting community members is unparalleled.
00:35:50Then there is Adele Irwin.
00:35:55Adele works tirelessly to make sure this world is a better place for everyone. She started an autism charity and a type 1 diabetes club to cater and support children and carers.
00:36:08Adele, a dedicated mother of three children with complex needs, epitomises the qualities of an inclusive and informed community builder.
00:36:18Then there's Gary Rutherford. Gary is a registered mental health nurse and has developed a unique recovery service that supports individuals and families impacted by substance use, positively impacting his community.
00:36:34His leadership has played a pivotal role in uniting local addiction groups and working to build a sense of togetherness and collaboration.
00:36:42Then there's the Inner City Assistance Team. This is a group of dedicated individuals who volunteer their own time every single weekend. The teams have thrown the streets of this city come rain, hail or snow.
00:37:00They put their own safety at risk to ensure that others remain safe. They are trained in medical first aid and also mental health first aid.
00:37:08Then there's Ciarán McHugh. Ciarán goes over and above his role within the conservation volunteer to extend his knowledge and enthusiasm to the community irrespective of background or ability.
00:37:25His complete inclusion of all the community is the reason people keep returning to attend Ciarán's groups.
00:37:31His knowledge and support does not just extend to financial matters. Last year Foyle Haven supported 246 people with their holistic needs.

01:16:49as an ambassador for Operation Smile
01:16:51which helps children born with cleft palates
