00:00I was a young carer. We had our first child John and we realised after about a year that
00:06he was going to be severely disabled.
00:09The thing about being a carer is it's absolutely exhausting. It's physically exhausting, it's
00:14emotionally exhausting.
00:16For John, he's now 16, what do you hope for his future?
00:20The first thing is to enable him to be as independent as he possibly can be and be the
00:26wonderful boy and man that he can be.
00:29I think any parent would say this, no-one's going to care for him like we do. I mean there'll
00:33be some wonderful carers out there I'm sure who look after their patients very much, but
00:45no-one's going to hold him like we hold him.
00:49That's why it's easier just to focus on the immediate, isn't it? And the practical.
00:55You can have all sorts of illegal ideas, I've trusted in all of that, but actually it's
01:03what you've got to have as a caring community, a caring society, and that's the best hope
01:08for the future.
