00:00It's uncanny how lifelike these robots look.
00:04As robotic technology continues to advance, robots are looking more and more like humans.
00:10Here are the Top 15 Most Human-Looking Robots.
00:1415.
00:16Anki Cosmo Starting off our list is something a little
00:20more accessible, fun, and perhaps a harmless robot, the Cosmo from San Francisco-based
00:26Anki.
00:27Anki comes with an AI that its creators have named the Emotion Engine.
00:31Cosmo reacts to situations just as a human would, using the full range of emotions from
00:36sadness to rage, and expresses them through its adorable little face.
00:41Cosmo comes with blue square-shaped eyes that can react along with its small arms to show
00:45you exactly how it feels.
00:48Play a game with Cosmo and it will smile with elation, but beat Cosmo and it will make an
00:52angry face and pound its little robot fists on the table.
00:56Anki is constantly updating Cosmo's programming to make it feel more nuanced and alive, and
01:01even enlisted the help of former Pixar animator Carlos Baena to help make it feel more animated.
01:06And if you're not paying enough attention to Cosmo, it's got plenty of audible emotive
01:10sounds to let you know exactly how it feels.
01:1414.
01:16Kime Created by Spanish-based Mako Robotics, Kime
01:20is shaking things up, literally, as the world's first humanoid robotic bartender.
01:25While Kime won't listen to all of your life's drunken woes, with its amazing AI, it can
01:30pour beer in 23 seconds with great precision.
01:33It was tested by serving drinks at a local brewery, and much to the patron's surprise,
01:38it was able to pour 300 glasses in an hour.
01:41It's not bad, considering the bartender will never tire out or have a salty attitude.
01:45Currently, Kime is used at festivals and events.
01:48You can't complain about a bad bartender anymore, and this time you don't even have to tip.
01:53And while it won't make you a fancy cocktail just yet, Kime does have machine learning,
01:58so hopefully one day it will make a pretty mean Manhattan.
02:01Mako Robotics' future plans involve creating a humanoid robotic chef that can be left alone
02:06to assist human chefs.
02:08Kime may end up being one of the kitchen staff members that can take the heat.
02:1313.
02:14Digit A simple name for a sophisticated machine,
02:19Digit is the latest project from Agility Robotics.
02:22While it has a humanoid shape, Digit lacks a head, giving it a more frightening look,
02:27but its AI system more than makes up for it.
02:30Its AI and machine learning technology allows it to walk upright, climb up and down stairs,
02:35walk over different types of terrains, navigate obstacles, and even balance on one leg, should
02:39the strange need arise.
02:41In January of 2020, Ford purchased a number of Digit models to put them to work in their
02:45factories because of its ability to lift, carry, and stack up to 40 pounds.
02:50And when Digit's workday is over, it can fold itself up for easy storage.
02:53It's pretty amazing.
02:55But the team at Ford has even bigger plans for Digit.
02:58It's been reported that within the near future, Ford will employ Digit to ride in a driverless
03:02car to pick up and deliver packages to customers.
03:06In the meantime, the company is still figuring out how humans react to the AI.
03:1112.
03:13Serena 4 Debuting in 2019 and created by a team of
03:17researchers, engineers, and professors in Iran, Serena 4 looks like it's from a science
03:22fiction movie.
03:23And perhaps that's where the idea originated.
03:26Taking 9 years to complete, this 4th generation humanoid robot is about the same size as a
03:31human adult and can perform most of the same basic tasks.
03:35Serena 4 can reach a maximum walking speed of just under 1 km per hour, has 43 degrees
03:40of movement freedom, and can perform dexterous tasks like picking up different shaped objects.
03:45But what's perhaps most impressive is its speech and facial recognition, object detection,
03:50position measurement, and counting capabilities.
03:53So the Serena 4 will probably have a better time remembering faces than the rest of us
03:58do.
03:59It also uses a voice user interface, meaning we're moving even closer to having vocal conversations
04:03with advanced AI.
04:04And while it may work in a factory or a supply plant one day, for now, the main purpose of
04:09the Serena 4 is to encourage students to pursue career and research in AI and robotics.
04:1611. Pepper
04:18If you live in or have ever visited Japan, you may be familiar with this next entry on
04:23our list.
04:24Pepper.
04:25Pepper is a humanoid robotic design from SoftBank Robotics with Emotion Reading AI.
04:31She can work as a receptionist, in retail, and even as a nanny.
04:34It's also not uncommon to be greeted by her at a restaurant.
04:38Pepper's got your back.
04:39She has Educational Integrated Development Environment, or IDE for short, called Tethys,
04:46created to help teach students how to code.
04:48And who better to teach coding than a robot?
04:51Students can use software to program how she moves, walks, talks, and show messages on
04:55her screen in real time.
04:57And as helpful as Pepper is, SoftBank is hoping that she will inspire future generations of
05:01engineers, roboticists, and AI developers.
05:0510. Robo Thespian
05:09Have you ever thought that an actor gave a robotic performance?
05:12Well, this one will hopefully do a little bit better.
05:16Created in 2004 by UK-based Engineered Arts, Robo Thespian is a third-generation AI actor.
05:23This humanoid robot can get loaded with a library of songs, gestures, greetings, and
05:27impressions to get the part.
05:29It's interactive and multilingual, so it can work with actors all around the globe.
05:34They can even interact with other Robo Thespians to put on fully automated robotic theater.
05:39It's slowly starting to catch up with movie magic technologies as it comes to compete
05:43with movement tracking, animation software, lighting, sound, and external device control.
05:48And you won't need a fancy computer to control it, because the Robo Thespian has touchscreen
05:53control.
05:54For now, the humanoid can only move using a hidden system of tracks and dollies, but
05:58the Engineered Arts team is working hard on giving it autonomous walking ability.
06:039. Nadine the Social Robot
06:07If you're ever feeling alone without anyone to talk to, there's always Nadine the Social
06:12Robot.
06:13Built by scientists at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Nadine was built
06:18to be a socially intelligent human-looking robot with her own built-in personality, mood,
06:23and emotions.
06:25All of that sounds great, as long as she's not in a bad mood.
06:29Her human creator, Nadia Thalman, feels strongly that one day these social robots, like Nadine,
06:34will play a more prevalent role, not just in society as a whole, but in our everyday
06:38lives.
06:39So that's why Nadine isn't just a robot, technically, she's got a job, receptionist.
06:45Talk about a robocall.
06:47But this robotic humanoid has got soft skin and hair texture, pretty similar to a human's.
06:52And while you likely won't mistake her for a living, breathing human, the resemblance
06:56is pretty stark.
06:57So if you do end up seeing Nadine first when you walk into the office, she'll happily greet
07:01you with a big smile, a handshake, and will look right into your eyes as the two of you
07:05talk about your morning.
07:07If you're happy, Nadine is happy.
07:09If you're upset, then so is Nadine.
07:11But she's also got a pretty good memory, so make sure to let her know that you've got
07:14a birthday coming up.
07:16But that also means that she's got the ability to recognize the faces of the folks she's met
07:20and everything they've said to her in the past.
07:23Instead of a human brain, though, Nadine has intelligent software that's pretty similar
07:26to Siri and Cortana, meaning that she knows just about anything and everything, possibly
07:31making her the most knowledgeable receptionist in the world.
07:35Maybe she's gunning for that promotion.
07:38Number eight, Erica.
07:40Don't you want to go where everybody knows your name?
07:43Well, wherever Erica is, that's where you want to be.
07:46Oh, you don't know Erica?
07:48Well, she knows who you are.
07:50In fact, she never forgets a face, literally.
07:53Erica is the humanoid robot from Japan that nods her head when she speaks to you and lets
07:57her eyes wander during the conversation.
08:00Don't worry, because she's most definitely listening.
08:02She's another conversational robot companion.
08:05Just because she can talk doesn't mean she's working with vast amounts of information.
08:10Her dialogue and the extent of her knowledge are pre-set, although there's always room
08:13to learn, and she can pretty easily identify keywords, phrases, and full sentences to give
08:18you an answer.
08:19But it may be safe to say that Erica is still smarter than a lot of people you may know.
08:24Erica is part of a five-year research project with the goal of building a talking friend
08:28for the aging population of Japan, which is shrinking at an incredible rate.
08:33And while she may tote the line into the uncanny valley, Erica serves an incredibly important
08:38purpose for a generation that, in other parts of the world, often goes unnoticed.
08:43The team behind her is addressing the social needs of the geriatric population, and they're
08:47doing it very well.
08:49She's not here to become your co-worker.
08:51She's here to be your friend, and when you need one, not a bad deal.
08:58Scientists in China have also been hard at work on their first humanoid robot, and boy
09:02does she look like she's one of us.
09:05Her name is Jiajia, and her creators are hopeful that she'll play an integral part in the world
09:09of cyborg labor in China.
09:12Officially unveiled in 2017 by a team of engineers at the University of Science and Technology
09:16of China, team leader Cheng Xiaoping feels strongly that by 2030, China at least will
09:22be using artificial intelligence and human-like robots to work menial jobs like restaurants,
09:27nursing homes, households, and hospitals.
09:29But China's population is so astronomically high that the jury's still out on Cheng's
09:34theory.
09:35While her AI isn't as impressive as some others on our list, her human resemblance can be
09:39incredibly off-putting to some.
09:42She's got flowing black hair and a very real-looking skin and facial structure that could make
09:46it tough if you had to play spot the robot.
09:49She'll even let you know if she thinks you're handsome, but don't get ahead of yourself,
09:52because if you ask Jiajia out, she'll shoot you down pretty quick.
09:56No, really, she'd been programmed to never say yes to a date.
10:00But Jiajia does have machine learning, so maybe after a few years she'll learn what
10:03her type is and one day give a lucky someone a resounding yes.
10:086. Toyota THR-3
10:12The Toyota THR-3 Humanoid Robot is the third generation of Toyota's Humanoid Robot program
10:17and is a robotic jack-of-all-trades.
10:20It can be programmed to act in several ways, including cleaning, construction, caregiving,
10:25or simple companionship.
10:27So whether you have too much to do around the house or just need a friend, the THR-3
10:31has got you covered.
10:32It can even learn to do new things, so it will never go out of style.
10:36But what makes this Humanoid Robot so special is that it's a hybrid, autonomous, and remote
10:41model.
10:42It can either operate on its own or be controlled by a nearby human, but they won't be using
10:46a boring old computer.
10:47Instead, the Toyota THR-3 can sync up to another human wearing a motion capture suit and imitate
10:53their every movement.
10:54And while it may seem strange, the robot is stronger than most people, meaning it can
10:58make up for human flaws where we need it the most.
11:025. CB-2
11:05Traveling back to Japan for one of the stranger entries on our list is the CB-2 from Osaka
11:10University.
11:11Released back in 2006, CB-2 is essentially a robot baby created to help students study
11:17neurological development of human babies in an ethical way.
11:21Its artificial intelligence lets it recognize human faces, understand emotions, and give
11:25physical reactions.
11:26It even has tactile sensors under its gray rubber skin that allow the CB-2 to respond
11:31to being held, stroked, and cuddled.
11:34Because the CB-2 represents a human two-year-old, it can stand up, but only with the help of
11:38another human.
11:39It can sit in a chair on its own, though, mimicking breathing as its chest rises and
11:44falls, and its beady eyes will even follow you across the room.
11:48Its AI allows for machine learning, so much like a two-year-old, it can watch students
11:53and researchers and learn how to be more human.
11:564.
11:57ASIMO Not to be confused with Awesomo, ASIMO is
12:02a humanoid robot from Honda that began development back in the year 2000.
12:06Because of its unique AI, ASIMO is one of the world's most advanced humanoid robots.
12:12Like us, it's bipedal and can walk on its own, but it's not easily staggered.
12:17Its AI helps to understand how to maintain its balance, keeping upright when it meets
12:21a bump in the road, and can quickly adapt to different situations and hazards on the
12:25fly.
12:26Honda's ASIMO was revealed as one of the world's first two-legged walking robots and has evolved
12:31considerably over the last two decades, and while it doesn't yet serve a commercial purpose
12:36like some of the other entries on our list, it's still incredibly impressive and can move
12:40better than many clumsy humans can.
12:43Its AI also allows it to interact with humans, walk up and down staircases, and recognize
12:47a pretty large array of external objects.
12:50It's a robot that will likely never stop learning.
12:543.
12:55ROMEO This is one humanoid robot that will become
12:59part of the family.
13:01ROMEO was designed by Francis Aldebaran Robotics and stands about a meter and a half tall.
13:06Its main purpose is to assist people who have lost their physical autonomy, such as the
13:10elderly and handicapped.
13:12ROMEO is just the right size to open doors, climb stairs, and reach objects on the table
13:16for the human it's helping.
13:18Eventually, the developers are hoping he'll be able to carry people in the event they've
13:22fallen down or simply need help standing from the chair.
13:25Because ROMEO's functions are so important, its movements almost enter the uncanny valley,
13:30and mimic that of a human's almost perfectly.
13:332.
13:34SOFIA One of the most uncanny humanoid robots with
13:39an incredible AI system has got to be the Hanson's Robotics SOFIA.
13:44Built in Hong Kong and debuting at the South by Southwest Festival in 2016, SOFIA looks
13:49more human than AI.
13:51SOFIA is a social robot who uses her AI to recognize human faces, hold a conversation,
13:56and even form relationships.
13:58Famously, she even made a late-night television appearance, told jokes to the audience, and
14:02acknowledged that they were laughing.
14:04And while she's coming up with jokes and icebreakers with machine learning, rather
14:07than off the top of her head, she knows exactly when and how to say them, and her human-like
14:13facial expressions reflect each situation she finds herself in.
14:16But SOFIA can understand and answer very basic questions like, what are you looking at?
14:21And is the door open or closed?
14:24And while she may not yet understand everything she's saying, she can use her dialogue
14:27system to correctly piece together what to say, which is better than most humans can
14:32do.
14:33SOFIA has become so popular and groundbreaking that she became a legal citizen of Saudi Arabia
14:38just after her release, and we're sure they're happy to have her.
14:431.
14:45Geminoid DK Next time you're walking down the busy city
14:48streets, you could be crossing paths with this most human-of-looking robot.
14:53His name?
14:54Geminoid DK.
14:55Okay, maybe not the coolest or most practical name in the world, but Geminoid DK is going
15:00to have you fooled at first, second, and maybe even third glances.
15:04And even then, you may be asking yourself if this is a human pretending to be a robot,
15:09rather than the other way around.
15:11But rest easy, because this guy is, at the end of the day, just a bucket of nuts and
15:15bolts.
15:16Albeit very well put together nuts and bolts.
15:20Geminoid DK is the next generation of the Geminoid series of ultra-realistic androids
15:24from Kokoro, a Japanese firm, and Osaka University roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro.
15:29And believe it or not, the DK was designed to look just like Professor Heinrich Scharf
15:33of Alborg at the University of Denmark.
15:35And now we can't even tell the two apart.
15:38The robot impersonator cost about 200 grand and was created in order to study people's
15:42reactions to lifelike robots.
15:45Because frankly, unless you're one of the world's top robotics teams, it's not something
15:48many of us have grown accustomed to just yet.
15:51Kind of a strange life purpose for the Geminoid DK.
15:54But then you have to ask, is something like this even alive?
15:57Makes you think, doesn't it?
