00:27camping spree with Mr. McGee
00:29by Chris Van Dusen
00:35Early one morning at 7.03, Mr. McGee and his little dog Dee packed up the camper and hitched
00:42up the load, hopped in the Rambler and then hit the road.
00:46They drove to the mountains, far from the sea, for two nights of camping, or possibly
00:52three.
00:55There's nothing like camping, said Mr. McGee.
01:00I know you will love it.
01:02Just you wait and see.
01:04The views are fantastic.
01:06There's hardly a sound.
01:07Aside from the wildlife, there's no one around.
01:11And the air is so sweet, you'll sleep like a log, said Mr. McGee to his small-spotted
01:16dog.
01:17A few hours later, they took a sharp right and found a great spot to lay camp for the
01:27night.
01:27It was high on a hill with a beautiful view of Mount Adams and Mount Lincoln and Jefferson
01:33too.
01:34But perhaps the most wonderful feature of all was the brook that ran over a steep waterfall.
01:42Dee gathered pine cones and branches and logs.
01:45McGee made a campfire and cooked some hot dogs.
01:48And as the sun set behind far-distant knolls, they sat roasting marshmallows over the coals.
01:58As the embers went out, they felt tired and dozy.
02:02So they climbed in their bunk beds, all comfy and cozy.
02:05But while they were falling asleep without care, along came a stumbling, bumbling bear.
02:12A kindly old bear whose sight wasn't so clear.
02:15He couldn't see far, and he couldn't see near.
02:19But he could smell marshmallows, sticky and sweet.
02:23This smell made him hungry.
02:25He wanted a treat.
02:29He sniffed out the place where the marshmallows lay.
02:32But the car and the camper were in the bear's way.
02:36Yet that didn't stop the sneaky old snitch.
02:39He simply tried squeezing right under the hitch.
02:42And as he was shimmying into the gap, he pushed up the hitch, which let go with a snap.
02:52Now that the camper and car were untied, they started to roll down the rocky hillside.
02:59The car bounced away on the old logging road,
03:02while the camper was heading to where the stream flowed.
03:05It flew down the hill in a wild, bumpy ride, with Dee and McGee sleeping soundly inside.
03:16They were snoring and snoozing, enjoying a dream,
03:21when splash went the camper right into the stream.
03:29The splash shook the camper.
03:31They bumped out of bed.
03:33Now what in the world was that?
03:35McGee said.
03:36And when he looked out and saw where they were,
03:39his hair stood on end and so did Dee's fur.
03:43They were caught in the rapids.
03:45But that wasn't all.
03:47They were headed smack dab for the big waterfall.
03:52Dee and McGee both started to quiver,
03:55as faster and faster they headed downriver.
03:58But just when they thought they'd fall over the edge...
04:03Their camper got stuck on a rock at the ledge.
04:07So there they were, stranded,
04:09McGee and his pup on the top of a waterfall 50 feet up.
04:17Meanwhile, that nearsighted bear from before
04:21was searching for one little marshmallow more,
04:24when lo and behold, as if out of a dream,
04:27he spied something sweet floating over the stream.
04:31But what the bear thought was a marshmallow treat
04:34was really the hitch and not something to eat.
04:40The bear was determined to capture his prize.
04:44So he jumped in the water right up to his thighs.
04:47He splashed through the stream to the edge of the fall
04:50and snatched up the trailer hitch, camper and all.
04:57Dee felt a tug.
04:58Dee felt a tug.
05:00McGee heard a knock as the bear pulled the camper
05:03right off of the rock.
05:05He dragged them both all the way back to the bank
05:08when he realized the hitch was not sweet, but quite rank.
05:12He spit out the hitch and left in dismay,
05:15while McGee and Dee's camper again rolled away.
05:19It flew down the path with a jolt and a jar.
05:22And stopped in some bushes right next to the car.
05:26Dee popped her head out.
05:27McGee looked out too.
05:29Had they really stopped rolling?
05:31Could it be true?
05:33At last, things were quiet and peaceful and still.
05:37They hooked up the hitch and drove off down the hill.
05:41And on the way home, McGee said to Dee,
05:44that trip wasn't quite what I thought it would be.
05:48So when they got home,
05:49they decided to camp in the backyard instead.
