Woolworths is introducing a two-carton limit on egg purchases in New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria. The restriction is a response to a temporary delay in stock from one of its suppliers, due to bird flu. Coles introduced some limits on eggs earlier this month. The limit has been put in place following the discovery of the virus at a commercial chicken farm in the act.

00:00The outbreak is linked to an affected property in New South Wales, with the transfer of the
00:05virus thought to have happened on equipment being sent between facilities.
00:10Biosecurity monitoring began at the affected facility on Monday.
00:13The property processes eggs from interstate, sizing them before distribution and sale.
00:17The property does also contain an egg farm.
00:20An undisclosed number of chickens have already contracted the virus, placing the farm into
00:24quarantine.
00:25National protocols stipulate that all chickens on that property will now be destroyed, and
00:29extensive biosecurity measures undertaken.
00:32The process is expected to take several weeks.
00:35Biosecurity is not no risk.
00:37There is the potential that there could be traces that are going into New South Wales
00:41or elsewhere that will be followed up.
00:44Health authorities say the risk to humans is low.
00:47The virus does not easily transfer from poultry to humans or between humans.
00:51People who keep backyard chickens are being asked to monitor their birds and practice
00:55good hygiene and biosecurity measures.
