A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off southern Peru's coast, 600 km south of Lima. The shallow quake, felt as far as the capital, caused strong shaking in nearby towns. Initially, tsunami warnings were issued but later lifted. Some infrastructure damage was reported, including stone slides on a highway. The Peruvian government is monitoring the situation. The quake occurred due to Peru's location on the boundary of the South American and Nazca tectonic plates, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
