00:00:00for Peru, he gets the start, Lapidula is on the bench for this team.
00:00:04Lionel Messi is missing just his second Copa America match since he debuted in this competition in 2007.
00:00:12The only game he missed was the opening game of Copa America Centenario here in the U.S. in Santa Clara, California against Chile.
00:00:18Angel Di Maria, who starts today, had a goal and an assist as they beat Chile.
00:00:23And you've got a couple of players on that field for Argentina who were not yet alive.
00:00:29The last time they lost to Peru, which was back at the quarterfinal of the 1997 Copa America.
00:00:38Now, it is fascinating because the intention of these games is to have simultaneous kickoffs in each game in the group.
00:00:45Well, you have up in Orlando, Canada playing Chile.
00:00:49They've already kicked off. They've already played a minute.
00:00:51So we're quite a bit behind schedule here, whether they try to re-sync for the second half kickoff or not.
00:00:57It'll be interesting if that becomes relevant.
00:00:59Do we get to that point tonight where it's coming down to the final minutes and who is going to go through with Argentina?
00:01:05Will it be Canada? Will it be Chile? Will it in fact be Peru?
00:01:09Which seems to be certainly the most surprising scenario, but they're hoping they can pull off the shock.
00:01:14They've done it before in this tournament and they do so against a highly changed up Argentina lineup.
00:01:21But all these guys back up, so they might be right now for Argentina.
00:01:24How many teams would they be starting for here at this Copa America?
00:01:30Sweltering in South Florida as ever, but we are underway.
00:01:35It is the defending champions, Argentina, La Be Celeste in the white and sky blue stripes.
00:01:40Peru changing from their traditional and iconic white with red sash to all black.
00:01:46Argentina know they're advancing, beating Chile Tuesday night in front of 80,000 fans at MetLife Stadium after the opening night win over Canada.
00:01:55They've not yet secured the group stage win, which would lock them into a date on the 4th of July against an opponent to be determined tomorrow in Houston.
00:02:05And they can do so with the result tonight.
00:02:08For Peru, their big chance was the first two games against their rivals, Chile against Canada.
00:02:14And they came out with a scoreless draw against Chile and the one nil defeat on a brutally hot day in Kansas City on Tuesday.
00:02:22The speed there around the outside by Alejandro Garnacho, the teenager in Peru, thought they had that under control.
00:02:28It's going to be out for an early corner.
00:02:30And you see all the cars are saying either I couldn't hear or you didn't shout for me.
00:02:34Probably a combination of both.
00:02:36This stadium is absolutely rocking.
00:02:38It has been since we tried to make our way in here a couple of hours ago.
00:02:44No, messy.
00:02:45It's still a party.
00:02:47It's not healthy, Maria, who wears the captain's armband.
00:02:50The out swinging corner.
00:02:52So they there who was that late addition to the lineup heading it away.
00:02:56Routine that knows they have to win.
00:02:58If they don't win this game, the rest doesn't matter.
00:03:01And they'll need the correct result to go their way.
00:03:05And there's a couple different scenarios of what might happen in the other game between Canada and Chile.
00:03:10They have to control what they can control.
00:03:12Want to some?
00:03:12Well, one of the three assistant coaches for Leonel Scaloni, all legendary players in their own right.
00:03:19He is the stand in manager with Scaloni suspended, along with Chile's manager, Ricardo Gareca, as a result of the liberties they took in retaking the field for the second half of each of their first two games.
00:03:33Does that make it different?
00:03:34Does it matter they don't have messy or is Argentina just that good?
00:03:37Argentina is that good.
00:03:38But also you have a team that a lot of their coaching comes from within so much experience on the field.
00:03:54Got to say, we talk about playing your way into a tournament.
00:03:57We started with Argentina and Atlanta, and it felt like more of a spectator type environment.
00:04:04Well, boy, in New Jersey, that place was rocking in here even more so.
00:04:08Jorge Fasati won the domestic league title as a coach in Peru last year.
00:04:13Weeks later, they gave him the head coaching job because they had a winless start to qualifying.
00:04:18You get the sense of a man that sees the writing on the wall because most of his comments yesterday were about building the foundation, getting back to World Cup qualifying come September.
00:04:28Let's put his team pull off a shock tonight and cause some real chaos in Group A.
00:04:34Taliafico spun around as he tries to get inside.
00:04:37And that is going to be whistled for a foul there.
00:04:39Cesar Arturo Ramos of Mexico, as Garnacho looked like he had wriggled away with that ball, blowing the play dead.
00:04:45You can see early, Garnacho getting the start on this left-hand side, just his sixth appearance for Argentina.
00:04:51But we talk about opportunity, especially in games like this where Scaloni's had an opportunity to rest and rotate the team.
00:04:58Nine changes from the last match.
00:05:00But the guys on the field want to prove a point.
00:05:02Even Lautaro Martinez, who has two goals, but both off the bench.
00:05:05This is a chance for him, but also for Garnacho with Messi out to show what he can do.
00:05:10We'll get into a little bit more of the specifics a little later of how this looks differently because you have two wingers that are hugging the wings right now in Garnacho and Di Maria.
00:05:19By the way, none of the players on the field for Argentina saw the field in the World Cup Finals, as we said.
00:05:23So that's pretty good, right?
00:05:24Their depth is pretty decent.
00:05:34Marcos Lopez, formerly of the San Jose Earthquakes.
00:05:39And it was just pushed off and Lautaro Martinez knocked away.
00:05:50Di Maria! Di Maria! Di Maria!
00:06:02Assess opens it up wide, Di Maria brings it down.
00:06:05Montiel on the overlap, Montiel skips inside on the first one.
00:06:10And Lopez able to shield that off and prevent the corner as well.
00:06:14Alexander Collins couldn't get outfield, formerly of New York City FC.
00:06:18Peru get a throw.
00:06:22I think you're going to see a lot of 1v1 dribbling from Argentina in this game.
00:06:26This time it's Montiel on that right hand side getting into the attack.
00:06:29A little nutmeg on Lopez, but Lopez did a good job getting his body positioning goal side.
00:06:34Able then just to work that one out and Peru able to clear their lines a little bit and get up the field.
00:06:42But I think you're going to see really Garnacho, who you've seen early, bottom of your screen.
00:06:46He's going to really be trying to stay wide so he can face up against Corzo, take him on 1v1.
00:06:52And the same with Di Maria.
00:06:54So I expect runners from midfield getting into the attack as we get a first foul.
00:06:58And clearly the Peruvians don't agree with that call.
00:07:01A little flash point too as players from both sides came in to surround the referee.
00:07:06Cesar Ramos of Mexico, Lautaro Martinez who's down.
00:07:10Well you can see there Zambrano's forearm is right in the throat of Lautaro Martinez.
00:07:16So absolutely a foul. I'm not sure what the contesting is for.
00:07:21Although we've seen that just about every decision has been contested by opposing teams in this tournament.
00:07:27And Peru in each of their first two games have been involved in games in which the total amount of fouls called has been double the total amount of shots taken.
00:07:40Without the suspended Miguel Araujo of the Portland Timbers who's shown that red card in the game against Canada.
00:07:46Di Maria stands over the free kick.
00:07:51Di Maria's ball's whipped in and Pedro Galese there.
00:07:54Seemed to be a little bit unsure whether he felt he needed to come for that or not.
00:07:57He just knocks it away and he gifts Argentina a corner.
00:08:00Yeah the ball was over hit from Di Maria and actually at a nice height for Galese.
00:08:04But he hesitated initially and I wonder if he just felt he lost his positioning a bit there.
00:08:11And second guess whether that was on frame or not.
00:08:14Araujo back for Di Maria.
00:08:18Montiel cycles it around.
00:08:22And his last man back drives that cross in.
00:08:24Di Maria was in the area. He was in a real tangle as well.
00:08:29It should be a corner.
00:08:30It is.
00:08:31It is a corner.
00:08:32Good looking ball in.
00:08:35And it looks like he's offside which that wasn't flagged at the time.
00:08:39So the corner is going to stand.
00:08:41It did look like Di Maria was offside there.
00:08:43Argentina getting away with one.
00:08:45That's something that's reviewable even if Argentina score off of this.
00:08:49Di Maria.
00:08:50Outswinger.
00:08:51Crashes through all the bodies.
00:08:59Pedro Galese.
00:09:00A legend in his country.
00:09:01A legend up the road in Orlando.
00:09:06Happy to see that one come all the way through.
00:09:09It's one of the things with Peru on a sweltering evening in South Florida.
00:09:12So many familiar names and faces.
00:09:14Current and former MLS players on this Peru roster.
00:09:22Clipped forward by Gazela but right to Galese.

00:12:25Goal.
00:12:26Goal.
00:12:27Goal.
00:12:28Goal.
00:12:29Garnaccio cutting it in.
00:12:30Garnaccio off balance shot was blocked.
00:12:32And that is yet another Argentine corner
00:12:35their fourth in 11 minutes.
00:12:36Positioning is really good from Taliafico here,
00:12:39so high up the field that it allows him now
00:12:41to join the attack when this ball comes wide.
00:12:43And that's why Sone has to gamble
00:12:44to try to come out and win the ball.
00:12:47He does, he misses the pass, it gets to Garnaccio.
00:12:49He comes inside on his right foot.
00:12:51It was just a little bit off balance reaching for it,
00:12:54but is able to win a corner
00:12:55by getting the ball off his foot.
00:12:57The last one really flashed across Galese's goal.
00:12:59A lot of bodies there.
00:13:01He couldn't get to it.
00:13:02He got some big targets attacking the ball.
00:13:13DeMaria swinging to a good spot.
00:13:16Boy, rising up there through the pack was Otamendi.
00:13:19Just couldn't quite climb the ladder.
00:13:19And here they come again.
00:13:20Look, the Peruvians trying to chase down Cesar Ramos
00:13:23who just runs away from them.
00:13:25Galese, watch the goalkeeper here.
00:13:27He comes for it, gets nowhere near it.
00:13:31His body's in the way.
00:13:34And in the end, it was Otamendi.
00:13:39Zambrano stayed down.
00:13:41That was the player that Otamendi climbed up over.
00:13:49And the athletic training staff
00:13:51has not yet been waived on the field.
00:13:52That's why they're standing where they are
00:13:55just behind the goal line.
00:13:57And Cesar Ramos is completely unimpressed
00:14:02right now with Carlos Zambrano.
00:14:05To the point he's not even gonna allow
00:14:07the athletic training staff on the field.
00:14:10Well, there's Zambrano, Zonal marking.
00:14:12He's backing up.
00:14:13Otamendi gets a great leap up.
00:14:15And I see nothing wrong with that challenge
00:14:17from Otamendi for the ball.
00:14:20Because Zambrano doesn't even make a play to try to jump.
00:14:24So, he's not happy.
00:14:26He feels that there's contact on the back of his neck.
00:14:31Is that a Maradona tattoo there?
00:14:33Wow, that's impressive.
00:14:46Rupes gets the flick.
00:14:51Immediately tackled off it by Montiel.
00:14:54We'll have an extra word for Brian Reina.
00:14:56He will come together and Cesar Ramos
00:14:58will come attend to that.
00:15:07One of the four lineup changes tonight for Peru.
00:15:14And then he's down.
00:15:27Look, he and Montiel had shared pleasantries
00:15:30right before this.
00:15:30He's got a hold of Montiel's shirt.
00:15:33Montiel's got a hold of his.
00:15:34And then he decides to go to the ground.
00:15:36Again, nothing. Play on.
00:15:44What would you say is the purpose this serves?
00:15:46It seems to be a clear, intentional game plan
00:15:49from Peru early.
00:15:51Not for the first time.
00:15:52Look, we saw a similar version from this from Chile.
00:15:55When you're playing a team that's as strong
00:15:57and as good as Argentina,
00:15:59one of the tactics is to try to foul,
00:16:01to try to break up play, to try to break up a rhythm.
00:16:03How many times have we seen,
00:16:04even just the early stages of this game,
00:16:06extended spells of possession from Argentina?
00:16:09Attacking opportunities.
00:16:10Mostly they've come from set pieces.
00:16:12So I would argue in the early stages,
00:16:14the game plan is working from Peru
00:16:16because they're keeping Argentina away from the goal.
00:16:18They're pressing up a little bit higher.
00:16:20You can see their defensive shape, a 3-4-3.
00:16:22So the three very narrow in the middle.
00:16:23They're trying to limit service.
00:16:24That's a great ball to open up the field there for Di Maria.
00:16:27Back for Montiel, trying to come inside for Lo Celso.
00:16:30It was over his head.
00:16:31Cartagena nods it forward.
00:16:32Good recovery by Lo Celso to pick it back up.
00:16:34Paredes.
00:16:35Arturo Martinez, nowhere to go.
00:16:40Back to the far side for Rondel Di Maria.
00:16:44Montiel on the overlap.
00:16:48It's an Argentina team that has more shots than any team.
00:16:52More shots on goal than any team.
00:16:55Only three goals scored.
00:16:56That's the one complaint you would have about them.
00:16:59They have not been able to turn the relentless pressure
00:17:01they've built in their first two matches
00:17:03into consistent goals.
00:17:05And they left it at the 88th minute
00:17:07before finally breaking through against Chile.
00:17:13As you see, 5.7 expected goals.
00:17:16The value of where those shots have come on the field
00:17:19statistically say should have produced about six goals.
00:17:23It's produced three actual goals.
00:17:25Give you a sense of what they have left on the table.
00:17:29And some terrific goalkeeping performances
00:17:31from Maxime Cripo and Claudio Bravo
00:17:34who's out hurt tonight for Chile
00:17:36in their must-win game against Canada.
00:17:46It's a mendy long.
00:17:48It's a hit for Di Maria though.
00:17:49Marcos Lopez picks it up.
00:17:51And one of the big questions
00:17:52is we're gonna watch throughout this game
00:17:54is where does the dynamic playmaking come from
00:17:57with our, for Argentina with Messi out?
00:17:59Because you have a midfield there
00:18:01with Loselos O'Paredes and Palacios.
00:18:04Not a lot of goals, not much dynamism
00:18:07in terms of getting turned and taking players on
00:18:09and creating through the middle.
00:18:11The dynamism is on the wings.
00:18:13And right now Peru are really jamming that up.
00:18:15So they're 2v1 in the wide areas.
00:18:17That's why you're seeing some of these long direct balls
00:18:19trying to find predominantly Di Maria.
00:18:21Early stages it was Garnacho,
00:18:23but so far it's pretty slow
00:18:26and it's playing into Peru's hands defensively.
00:18:29Guerrero, rare touch, giving a rare start.
00:18:32Peru's all-time leading scorer.
00:18:39Pena will slow it up and bring the bodies forward for Peru.
00:18:43Came back into him, but he wasn't quite ready for it.
00:18:48And again, a body knocked off the ball.
00:18:50It was Palacios there, and then Latour Martinez goes down.
00:18:53It's his or Ramos' play on.
00:18:55Can Peru come the other way in some transition?
00:18:57Brian Reines, Lopez outside, brings it inside,
00:18:59hands it off, and it's in Flores.
00:19:01Looked like Guerrero was in a halfway decent spot there,
00:19:04just wasn't quite ready for it.
00:19:05Yeah, I think he thought that that was going to be a shot
00:19:07instead of a pass.
00:19:10And he's got it, he's got it, he's got it, he's got it.
00:19:12And he's got it, he's got it, he's got it, he's got it.
00:19:15And he's got it, he's got it, he's got it, he's got it.
00:19:18But Flores was reaching for it,
00:19:19didn't really have an opportunity
00:19:21with the ball close enough
00:19:22to generate enough power for a strike.
00:19:25But a nice moment there as good defending from Zambrano
00:19:28because they had 2v1 on Latour Martinez
00:19:30as he was trying to turn, the ball turns over,
00:19:33and then it was a transition opportunity for Peru.
00:19:41There's the Peru fans.
00:19:48No.
00:20:11Osaso,
00:20:13and offside flag there.
00:20:16Maria tried that's the right idea though. It's the right idea because de maria
00:20:21for the first time when
00:20:22Peru in a deeper block makes a long run behind the back line act that's gonna force them to drop a little bit open up
00:20:29Some space in front, but just when a step too early
00:20:32Around a 16 of the euros continues tomorrow on Fox England take on Slovakia followed by Spain against the Republic of Georgia
00:20:39No starts at 11 a.m.. Eastern 8 a.m.. Pacific on Fox
00:20:46I
00:20:49Say goes long. We're out putting anything on it. It's a hand it takes it down from Pena off the chest
00:20:57With your opinion it was found by Latora Martinez
00:21:10We'll take the opportunity to bring all the big bodies forward here
00:21:15And they have to win this game to have any chance they still need things to go the right way in the other game in
00:21:20Orlando
00:21:22At the starting point the thing they can control
00:21:25Is beating an Argentina team that's heavily rotated
00:21:28It's already going on to the quarterfinal just a matter of whether they finish top of the group or runners-up
00:21:34The headquarters over there number three coming all the way over
00:21:38To just bark some instructions for this set piece or maybe a play that they're trying to set up
00:21:45This look has now fine Orton Holland after his time with the San Jose earthquakes
00:21:50Such a penny over it as well
00:22:01Into the fake Lopez the service Zambrano and just miscues it up onto the roof of Emiliano Martinez his goal a
00:22:10A
00:22:12Lot of jostling off the ball and actually says I'd almost having a conversation with LaSalle
00:22:16So he was holding Alexander Collins there just the ball went too far
00:22:21But that's something to watch for if they don't get set-piece opportunities
00:22:26With all the bodies and people flying there
00:22:28They're gonna try everything they can do to try to win a penalty for a better situation
00:22:32In and around the goal because I don't think they're gonna see too many opportunities from open play
00:22:37Who win lists the last 16 meetings between these nations since that
00:22:421997 Copa America quarterfinal, here's Di Maria
00:22:46For the entrepreneur it is on his 30th birthday today
00:22:53She was making it back to a run it comes short instead
00:22:57Knocked away
00:22:58So they beat to the second ball Talia Figo takes a push as he flips it forward for Garnaccio
00:23:03He couldn't get around the outside on Corso
00:23:07He's too far for Raina though
00:23:12There with Pena and
00:23:14Palacios or not show lost his footing three Peru players converged none of them got the ball comes to LaTorre Martinez
00:23:21Martinez saved by Galassi the flag does come up after the save
00:23:28This is a referee doing the right thing I think it was pretty clearly offside as this ball comes in and
00:23:34Yes, it is but doing the right thing letting the play develop just in case you're not a hundred percent sure
00:23:40Don't want to negate that attacking opportunity
00:23:42Maybe leads to a goal could say from Galassi on LaTorre Martinez
00:23:46But that's the type of play where sometimes the defense can open up
00:23:49They thought they'd won the ball initially off of Garnaccio and then he pokes it away
00:23:54Nice idea from Di Maria to try to find him on that cutting ball
00:23:58Let's say with 11 career Copa America shutouts, that is the tied for third most in the competition's history
00:24:06He had the most saves of any goalkeeper the last two Copa America tournaments
00:24:10He's only made two saves on three shots on goal faced in the first two games
00:24:16It's been a very different type of tournament for him
00:24:20How few chances he's really had to deal with in front of him
00:24:28It was part of a Peru team that
00:24:30In a somewhat similar situation
00:24:32They pulled off a shock against Brazil in 2016 in Foxboro the final day of the group stage
00:24:37Now the goal for Raul Ruiz Diaz would not have counted under VAR
00:24:40He absolutely spat it in with his hand, but that was a pre-VAR day
00:24:45And Peru got through to the knockout stage knocked Brazil out led to a coaching change as well
00:24:51And they pull off a similar shocking upset
00:24:54And they pull off a similar shocking upset and get through to the knockout stage here
00:25:03There's some intense conversations there from
00:25:07The Argentine bench telling Garnacho stay wide, stay wide, give us width
00:25:11There's no width for Argentina. It's making it easy for Peru to defend just so centrally
00:25:16Too many resets for Di Maria. Montiel making a run off him
00:25:29This is Flores the former DC United player defending Perez
00:25:33They're gonna work it around. Here's Garnacho now. Garnacho on Sone
00:25:36Garnacho cuts it inside gets Sone off balance
00:25:39He's able to recover and slide and block the cross out for an Argentina throw
00:25:43Quickly back in for Garnacho. They're trying to re-scramble themselves. Perez
00:25:52That's the type of ball movement they need though. The one-touch passing, players moving
00:25:57Drawing defenders out of space. But I have to say an excellent job again defensively from Peru
00:26:02Getting three defenders around Garnacho
00:26:04Lo Celso trying to turn it back inside and he's fouled
00:26:07Pulling the shirt from Aldo Corzo. Free kick for Argentina
00:26:12Di Maria three direct free kick goals scored this season for club and country
00:26:20Scored an Olympico goal as well for Benfica back in December
00:26:28Andrew Parada stands over it as well
00:26:30Gabriel Suazo has been sent off a second yellow card inside of 27 minutes for Chile
00:26:36And a must-win game for them
00:26:39They are down to 10 men the rest of the way
00:26:41It also equalizes a theoretical scenario where that could be about the seventh tiebreaker between Chile and Argentina
00:26:48And the two teams that are going to face each other
00:26:50And the two teams that are going to face each other
00:26:52And the two teams that are going to face each other
00:26:54And the two teams that are going to face each other
00:26:56And the two teams that are going to face each other
00:26:58About the seventh tiebreaker between Chile and Peru
00:27:01We'll see if we get there or not
00:27:06Di Maria and Paredes over the free kick
00:27:16And it's Paredes and it's clipped off the crossbar it bounces Galese trying to control it
00:27:23And what's the decision coming from Cesar Ramos
00:27:27I think he's signaling goal kick wow
00:27:29Most expecting Di Maria here, but instead
00:27:32Paredes and I think even Galese was expecting Di Maria
00:27:35He gets a late jump on this ball and just look how it starts centrally
00:27:39It's bending and heading right for that top corner
00:27:45What a strike that is
00:27:47And Galese with a strong right hand and then
00:27:50And Galese with a strong right hand and then
00:27:52Just able to palm it up in the air
00:27:54Wasn't sure where the rebound was going to go
00:27:56And that ball was still bouncing in
00:27:58I think it was just touched over the end line by an Argentine attacker
00:28:02The first real test for Pedro Galese there
00:28:10Just his third save in three games of this tournament
00:28:12Fico knocked off the ball and he's barking at the referee and Cesar Ramos is basically saying hey just keep playing balls in play
00:28:18And we see confirmation of the red card for Chile
00:28:26Suazo was who crashed through Lionel Messi the other night and
00:28:30Had the Messi getting treatment a part of why he's not playing in this game
00:28:34Here it is. Sonny got his head to it there in front of Garnaccio
00:28:48The second straight game for Canada in which they have a man advantage
00:28:50They get an hour worth of it
00:28:52And had a half hour man advantage
00:28:54They finally got the goal
00:28:56And the first goal of the game
00:28:58And the first goal of the game
00:29:00And the first goal of the game
00:29:02Man advantage
00:29:04They finally got the goal against Peru
00:29:06In Kansas City on Tuesday
00:29:08To put them in this position to be able to advance
00:29:10At their first Copa America
00:29:12Perez hit hard as he released it
00:29:14He's down with a shout of pain
00:29:16And that will be pulled back for a foul
00:29:18This should be a yellow card though
00:29:20And it looks like it's going to be
00:29:22From Cesar Ramos
00:29:24I was going to say
00:29:26We didn't get a yellow off of that
00:29:28I don't know when we're going to get a yellow tonight
00:29:30Daniel Pereira put him a lot of tonight
00:29:32Their all-time leading scorer
00:29:34His 122nd international appearance
00:29:52And he has only one goal in the last five years
00:29:54It was a penalty in March
00:29:56Against the Dominican Republic
00:30:01And a suing free kick
00:30:03Easily caught by Pedro Galese
00:30:15How much of a difference does that make
00:30:17To not have the head coach
00:30:19Actually the one barking instructions
00:30:21On the bench during a match
00:30:23You know, it depends on the coach
00:30:25And it depends on the team
00:30:27But I just think a team like this
00:30:29A. The big boss is watching
00:30:31And B. He's empowered those on the bench
00:30:33To coach in the same way
00:30:35And the other part of this
00:30:37Is especially when you're talking about this staff
00:30:39Specifically Pablo Aymar
00:30:41And Walter Samuel
00:30:43These are legends within their own right
00:30:45Within the Argentinian national team
00:30:47So they command respect
00:30:49Of course it's a little bit different than Scaloni
00:30:51But I don't think it has much effect
00:30:53On this team at all
00:30:55And when you say the big boss is watching
00:30:57Is that Scaloni or Messi?
00:30:59Yes
00:31:01And he intercepts that pass
00:31:03Puts it up for
00:31:05Oliver Sone
00:31:07Fifth appearance for Peru
00:31:09His first ever start
00:31:11And then Peña takes the foul
00:31:13From Latorre Martinez

00:37:33It takes two different deflections in there.
00:37:36And will be given as a goal kick in the end.
00:37:54It's so interesting with Pedro Galese,
00:37:56we've spoken to his teammates in Orlando over the years.
00:37:58How do you describe why this guy is so good?
00:38:01Because statistically,
00:38:03it's not like he's ever been a league leader in MLS
00:38:05in a lot of the different goalkeeper categories.
00:38:06And the teammates we talked to have struggled to describe.
00:38:09There's just something about his ability
00:38:10to make the big save and that presence.
00:38:13He's been a part of Orlando's incredible rise
00:38:16in recent years.
00:38:16He's been a part of Peru's incredible rise.
00:38:18Played through a broken finger on his hand
00:38:20to get them through a playoff
00:38:22to their first World Cup in 36 years in 2018.
00:38:26What do you see when you look at Pedro Galese
00:38:28and you think about certainly his time in MLS
00:38:30and kind of what we've seen in recent years?
00:38:32First of all, his consistency is another turnover
00:38:35there from Argentina.
00:38:37Trying to find Reina.
00:38:38Emiliano Martinez is there.
00:38:39His consistent ability to come up with big saves.
00:38:43I think his reaction time,
00:38:44you see when the ball is in and around the goal,
00:38:46there's deflections, there's set pieces,
00:38:48there's bodies crashing.
00:38:49He still finds a way to get a hand on the ball.
00:38:51It's Garnacho dispossessed.
00:38:53Sone, good tackle.
00:38:54Sone's having a good game on the right side.
00:38:56He's getting some help as well defensively,
00:38:57which allows him to be a little bit more aggressive
00:38:59on Garnacho.
00:39:01Back to Heina.
00:39:02That was a tough spot for him to be in.
00:39:03Got his pocket picked there by Garnacho.
00:39:09And then aggressively passes.
00:39:10Yeah, he's also looking a little bit tired, Garnacho,
00:39:13because I think when you haven't seen any minutes
00:39:15to this point in the tournament,
00:39:16then you come into a game like this, it's very hot.
00:39:19It's a high tempo.
00:39:20You're getting a lot of the ball.
00:39:23You're constantly being asked to run at defenders.
00:39:25And I think you saw him there.
00:39:27He takes the guy on, he wins the ball back.
00:39:29He says, hey, I need a breather.
00:39:30I just punt it back to Emi Martinez.
00:39:32He's actually hunched over.
00:39:34You can't see him on your screen,
00:39:35but on the sideline, he's not even moving right now,
00:39:37trying to catch his breath back.
00:39:3997 heat index right now.
00:39:40He didn't even play the two warmup games.
00:39:42He's not played in a month since the end of Manchester.
00:39:44Yeah, you're seeing that.
00:39:45Here he is on the ball now.
00:39:47And he's a dynamic, explosive player.
00:39:50Lo Celso.
00:39:52Zambrano knocked it down.
00:39:53Latour Martinez stepped in,
00:39:55but it was offside on Latour Martinez.
00:39:58That ends the threat.
00:40:01And the last note on that is you combine that
00:40:03with a 19-year-old who's making just his second start
00:40:06in his sixth appearance for Argentina.
00:40:09And I think Latour is just offside there.
00:40:13You're trying to do everything you can do.
00:40:14Your adrenaline is pumping off the charts right now
00:40:17to try to impress and to try to have an impact on this game.
00:40:21But I think that Argentina's best moments
00:40:24have come down their right through Di Maria,
00:40:26when they can get Montiel high,
00:40:28give him space to come underneath and combine.
00:40:30But they've not really been that dangerous, Argentina.
00:40:34And give credit to Peru.
00:40:35Look, they sit back defensively,
00:40:37really tight lines, aggressive center backs,
00:40:40but they're also not offering anything in the attack.
00:40:43But they seem quite content with that in this moment.
00:40:44Because as it stands, Peru are going out,
00:40:46but this still kind of fits their plan, right?
00:40:49Just keep it closed as long as you can.
00:40:52Get the one goal when you can.
00:41:00Sime trying to get that one in.
00:41:02And he picks it up.
00:41:03It's an afflicted effort,
00:41:04but it bounced off Guerrero and out for a goal kick.
00:41:16As it stands, Peru would just need the one goal
00:41:19if it finishes scoreless in Orlando.
00:41:21But again, Chile are playing with 10.
00:41:25And neither game has had a first half hydration break,
00:41:27which is interesting.
00:41:29Di Maria, options either side,
00:41:31calls his own number through the traffic,
00:41:32but it's right at Pedro Galese, who makes his second save.
00:41:35Nice move, though.
00:41:36Nice, explosive move.
00:41:38Shifting through the gears for Argentina.
00:41:40And this was the run I was talking about,
00:41:42when Di Maria has it wide.
00:41:43There's Montiel,
00:41:44two runners in front.
00:41:45That allows him to come inside on the left foot,
00:41:47which he wants.
00:41:48He gets a great look at the goal,
00:41:50just didn't really get a hold of that strike.
00:41:54To Tess Galese,
00:41:55you're not going to beat a goalkeeper of his quality
00:41:57with that type of strike.
00:41:58But that's the look.
00:41:59And if you give him more often,
00:42:02if they give him more looks like that,
00:42:04those strikes are going to be a lot better.
00:42:06Ryan Arana, good work on the outside on Pizela.
00:42:08He's able to get around,
00:42:09and ran into the box,
00:42:10and took two shots.
00:42:11He's going to be able to get back in the game.
00:42:12He's going to get around,
00:42:13and ran into the box,
00:42:14and took two different bounces.
00:42:15It's picked up by Marcos Lopez.
00:42:18Lopez, can he get a cross away from the byline?
00:42:20That takes a bit of a touch.
00:42:22Sone knocking it up.
00:42:23Pena trying to settle it.
00:42:25Corso has to chase it down.
00:42:27Trying to chip it up for Sone.
00:42:29It's out in the air.
00:42:31It's an Argentina throw.
00:42:35Jorge Fosati likes that from his team.
00:42:37Good one V one work on the outside.
00:42:40Cross into the box.
00:42:43And you're right, I mean,
00:42:48we were here listening to some pre-match interviews.
00:42:51He's even getting an hour before kickoff,
00:42:52and they're asking him,
00:42:53hey, is your job on the line?
00:42:54And look, they're doing terribly right now
00:42:58in World Cup qualifying for Comna Ball.
00:43:01They're struggling in their recent results.
00:43:03They're struggling to score goals.
00:43:04It's just not looking good for Peru.
00:43:06So as much as their focus will more than likely
00:43:09be back on World Cup qualifying,
00:43:11it would go a long way for this team
00:43:13if they could pull any type of result
00:43:14against the best team in the world
00:43:16in a game like this, even if they don't advance.
00:43:18Because they've been overachievers in recent years.
00:43:20They got to that World Cup in 2018.
00:43:22They were in the Copa America final in 2019.
00:43:25They were a penalty shootout away
00:43:27of getting back to the World Cup.
00:43:28They lost to Australia two years ago
00:43:31in the final intercontinental qualifying playoff.
00:43:35That's what cost Riccardo Garreca his job
00:43:38or at least led him to step down.
00:43:39That's why he's coaching Chile.
00:43:40Although, again, he's suspended watching for the stands.
00:43:44That was Leonel Scaloni tonight.
00:43:47And so a little bit like Chile, you've
00:43:49got this generation who've done wonderful, amazing things.
00:43:52What's in the pipeline to replace them?
00:44:04Antonio Martinez just tackled there
00:44:07by Lilo Cartagena, who's already on a yellow card
00:44:10for the Orlando City player.
00:44:40Good pressure there by Reina.
00:44:42Peña-Guerrero, too far out in front.
00:44:44Strong, little two-footed stuff there by Gonzalo Montiel.
00:45:01Who has managed one shot right now,
00:45:03which is better than Chile had done at this point, Tuesday night.
00:45:06Great deep re-in and out of the run.
00:45:07Montiel on the overlap.
00:45:08Lopez backing off.
00:45:10Hands it off for Montiel.
00:45:11Cuts it in the middle of the field.
00:45:12Lo Celso kicks in with a beautiful essay.
00:45:14Garnacho misses the upper right-hand corner.
00:45:19Well, it starts with a ball deep from Paredes.
00:45:21And call this ball skipping a line, where you shape up
00:45:25like you're playing the defender,
00:45:26and then all of a sudden whip a hard one out wide to Di Maria.
00:45:29That kick starts this transition moment, the overlapping
00:45:33run again, so dangerous.
00:45:35And then a smart cutback ball this time to a great area.
00:45:38And Lo Celso doesn't get a hold of it.
00:45:40You can see it actually hits it into the ground, which takes
00:45:43all the pace out of the ball, because Galese is already
00:45:46starting to guess, because he knows
00:45:48he's going to have to come up with a save.
00:45:50Gets a foot on it to clear it.
00:45:53And then it goes to Garnacho, who
00:45:54puts it over the bar trying to bend it
00:45:56into that far corner as Lionel Messi watches on.
00:46:01Best chance of the game, though, for Argentina.
00:46:03And yes, that was on the video boards in Hard Rock Stadium
00:46:05as well, hence the roar.
00:46:08Three saves from Pedro Galese in this first half,
00:46:11more than he made in the first two games
00:46:13combined at this Copa America.
00:46:25And they're into an added four minutes
00:46:27of stoppage time in Orlando.
00:46:33One added minute here in Miami, so the two halves
00:46:37did not start simultaneously.
00:46:39It might end simultaneously, more or less.
00:46:43The finale of Group A, Lopez, Reyna.
00:46:47Flores resets it wide.
00:46:49Lopez drifting that one in.
00:46:51It's flipped along, and good clearance
00:46:53in the end by Garnacho.
00:47:0030 seconds to go in the half.
00:47:08Oh, there's certainly nowhere to go.
00:47:10Trying to get into Guerrero.
00:47:11He'll get another one out of it.
00:47:14This is also Peru trying to prevent
00:47:17there being any time left for Argentina
00:47:19to come back down the field.
00:47:24That was last off Sonne, and that
00:47:26might end up being the last kick of the half.
00:47:29Do you feel good about this, though, if you're Peru?
00:47:31Yeah, you're in the game.
00:47:33What else can you ask against Argentina?
00:47:36What else can you ask against this team,
00:47:39this Argentine team?
00:47:40You've limited them to some chances.
00:47:42You opened up a little bit at the end of that first half,
00:47:44and I think you're going to see more of that
00:47:45as this game goes on in the second half,
00:47:47because they have to score.
00:47:48Second half of both games are going to be very fascinating.
00:47:50We're going to send you back to Rob Stone
00:47:52in our studio in LA.
00:47:5345 minutes down, 45 to go here in Miami.
00:47:57No score between Argentina and Peru.
00:48:03They're as your Group A winners, and they're now
00:48:05making their way out onto the field.
00:48:07Carly, we talked about the nine changes to the Argentina 11.
00:48:11What have you seen from those 11 through 45 minutes?
00:48:15I think it's hard.
00:48:16I think when you don't get into a game rhythm
00:48:19when you're playing, it's hard to make those changes.
00:48:22But I do think Peru's done a really good job
00:48:24of sitting back, buying back at times.
00:48:28But they're going to have to score and win this game.
00:48:30So I would think that, expect the second half,
00:48:34they're going to have to open up,
00:48:35and then that's going to give Argentina the chance
00:48:38to play through the lines.
00:48:40There's the suspended Argentine manager, Lionel Scaloni.
00:48:44As he sees his team on the field, Peru finally making their way there.
00:48:47Peru, they have to score.
00:48:48Guess what they haven't done yet, Clint?
00:48:49Score a goal this tournament.
00:48:51How do they go about doing it?
00:48:52Well, you have to get more shots on goal,
00:48:54and you have to test the keeper.
00:48:55So second half, they'll be looking to do what they can
00:48:58to try to keep their hopes alive.
00:49:00They still have everything to fight for
00:49:02with this score line at the moment.
00:49:03But if you look at what's happened with Argentina in the last two games,
00:49:06they haven't been able to score in the first half.
00:49:08But what have they been able to do in the second half, Rob?
00:49:10Get three goals through two games.
00:49:12You mentioned Peru.
00:49:13Just one shot, zero on goal, and 23% possession.
00:49:19Argentina through to the quarters.
00:49:21Peru trying to join them for the second half call.
00:49:24We take you back out to Miami.
00:49:25John Strong and Stu Holden.
00:49:28And, Rob, a halftime substitution.
00:49:30They're going to take Willer Cartagena off our Peru.
00:49:33As he was sitting on a yellow card, and Jesus Castillo comes on.
00:49:39Just turned 23 years of age, just his 10th appearance,
00:49:42and it's his Copa America debut.
00:49:45Cartagena's 29 and has 36 games played.
00:49:48You're losing a ton of experience there with that sub
00:49:51just to protect the possibility of a second yellow card.
00:49:56And as you guys were saying in the studio,
00:49:58a goal by Peru here, a goal by Chile,
00:50:01who are making two halftime substitutions before they kick off in Orlando.
00:50:05Changes everything in this group,
00:50:06but those are the two teams that in this group at least
00:50:09haven't scored a single goal at this Copa America.
00:50:12Only the next 45 minutes take us.
00:50:14As Group A comes to its conclusion, will it indeed beat Canada?
00:50:18Joining Argentina in the knockout stage.
00:50:21Second half underway, just that one sub for Peru so far.
00:50:26And from an Argentine perspective, first halves of this Copa America,
00:50:30they've outshot their opponents to 26 to 8,
00:50:33and they have zero goals scored.
00:50:35Is that anything that concerns you about them going forward?
00:50:37No, because this happens pretty often for elite teams
00:50:40that play against inferior opposition,
00:50:43that sit back and they just try to make the game defensive,
00:50:47they try to limit your opportunities,
00:50:49but that's a good stat for Argentina.
00:50:51On the side of, if you look at it through the perspective
00:50:53of their dominating first halves, they're wearing teams down,
00:50:56and as long as they can just blow the doors open
00:50:58and score the goals in the second half,
00:51:00I don't worry about that.
00:51:01The fact that they're even creating chances
00:51:03against a deep-lying block at times is a good sign.
00:51:05That's a nice little ball around the corner.
00:51:07I'm interested to see how dynamic Argentina are.
00:51:09At what point do Peru get more?
00:51:11Here's Latorre Martinez from Di Maria.
00:51:12Martinez the chip!
00:51:14Third goal in three games for Latorre Martinez,
00:51:19and all that conversation about them not scoring.
00:51:22Last one minute, 15 seconds.
00:51:38Well, it's a nice spot taken up there.
00:51:40That ball around the corner, though,
00:51:41from Latorre Martinez opens this field up.
00:51:44Let's see who's onside.
00:51:45He is.
00:51:46Timing is so good.
00:51:49It's Lopez who just steps up a tad too late,
00:51:52and Latorre Martinez wide open through the middle.
00:51:54Zambrano had stepped into the middle initially with him
00:51:57and then didn't follow his run,
00:51:58so Latorre Martinez drifts him behind,
00:52:01and how about that for a finish?
00:52:03So cool, calm, collected.
00:52:04Has a little look out the side there
00:52:07and sees that Galese is coming off his line
00:52:09and lifts it over him with the deftness of chips.
00:52:14And Latorre Martinez, three goals in three games.
00:52:17Two of them off the bench, gets the start in this one
00:52:19and buries that one right at the start of the second half
00:52:22to give Argentina the lead.
00:52:25And a hug for his pal Lionel Messi sitting this one out.
00:52:30And they are just checking that close offside decision.
00:52:33Latorre Martinez, now the top scorer here at Copa America
00:52:37with his third goal.
00:52:39He was the top scorer in Italy's Serie A with Inter Milan.
00:52:43Yeah, they're checking, I would imagine, that offside,
00:52:46and it looked to me like it was a good goal,
00:52:48and it seems like it has been communicated to Cesar Ramos
00:52:52that it is a good goal.
00:52:53So Argentina, 1-0 lead right at the beginning of the second half,
00:52:57and you think Peru had to open up now?
00:52:59Well, you better start attacking.
00:53:01What's that going to do?
00:53:02Open up a space on the other side,
00:53:04and let's see if they get one before Argentina get 2-3-4.
00:53:08It doesn't change who's advancing from the group.
00:53:10Peru, as we said, have to win to have a chance.
00:53:15Goal!
00:53:25Argentina leads!
00:53:31Zambrano charging it forward and put it behind Marcos Lopez,
00:53:36and Zambrano is down at the end of the play.
00:53:44They are heading to Houston for the 4th of July as it stands against the runner-up from
00:54:02group B, which will be determined tomorrow.
00:54:05It might be Argentina versus Mexico in Houston on the 4th of July.
00:54:11The question now becomes, can Chile get a win, get a goal, despite playing down a man
00:54:25against Canada?
00:54:26They go in at the Canadian's expense.
00:54:30Can Jesse Marsh lead Canada to the knockout stage in their first ever Copa America appearance?
00:54:36What's wild about it is the last four Copa America tournaments, the teams that have played
00:54:41in more semifinals and more finals than anyone else is Argentina, Chile and Peru, three of
00:54:45the teams in this group, that Canada, as it stands, are advancing.
00:54:49It's won in the middle by Pena.
00:54:52Edison Flores trying to hold it out.
00:54:54He goes down and a free kick for Peru.
00:54:56These are going to be significant moments for them to try to climb back in the game.
00:55:00Paredes just dangled his foot out there trying to make the challenge.
00:55:04It's Latauro's goal, the difference.
00:55:07The thing I loved about the goal as well, John, is he had, in the first half, been playing
00:55:12a lot of hold up play back the way he's facing on the goal that time.
00:55:17He spins one around the corner, had opened up his body a little bit better and then made
00:55:21a great run through the middle.
00:55:24Great striker play.
00:55:25Consuming a free kick for Peru.
00:55:26There's an acrobatic clearance in there.
00:55:27Might have been a foul, not whistled in the field.
00:55:28Comes back to Reina.
00:55:29Reina trying to clip that up into the traffic.
00:55:30Might be a push in there.
00:55:31It's a catch.
00:55:32Latauro Martinez.
00:55:33Just another strong, confident take.
00:55:34Pulls over his own defenders if he has to.
00:55:35And Cesar Ramos will stop the play as the goal scorer, Latauro Martinez, is down.
00:55:36That's a good header from Corzo right into a dangerous area.
00:55:37Up for grabs.
00:55:38And Martinez.
00:55:39That's a good header.
00:55:40That's a good header.
00:55:41That's a good header.
00:55:42That's a good header.
00:55:43That's a good header.
00:55:44That's a good header.
00:55:45That's a good header.
00:55:46That's a good header.
00:55:47That's a good header.
00:55:48That's a good header.
00:55:49That's a good header.
00:55:50That's a good header.
00:55:51That's a good header.
00:55:52That's a good header.
00:55:53That's a good header.
00:55:54That's a good header.
00:55:55That's a good header.
00:55:56That's a good header.
00:55:57That's a good header.
00:55:58That's a good header.
00:55:59That's a good header.
00:56:00That's a good header.
00:56:01That's a good header.
00:56:02That's a good header.
00:56:03That's a good header.
00:56:04That's a good header.
00:56:05That's a good header.
00:56:06That's a good header.
00:56:07That's a good header.
00:56:08That's a good header.
00:56:09That's a good header.
00:56:10That's a good header.
00:56:11That's a good header.
00:56:12That's a good header.
00:56:13That's a good header.
00:56:14That's a good header.
00:56:15That's a good header.
00:56:16That's a good header.
00:56:17That's a good header.
00:56:18That's a good header.
00:56:19That's a good header.
00:56:20That's a good header.
00:56:21That's a good header.
00:56:22That's a good header.
00:56:23That's a good header.
00:56:24That's a good header.
00:56:25That's a good header.
00:56:26That's a good header.
00:56:27That's a good header.
00:56:28That's a good header.
00:56:29That's a good header.
00:56:30That's a good header.
00:56:31That's a good header.
00:56:32That's a good header.
00:56:33That's a good header.
00:56:34That's a good header.
00:56:35That's a good header.
00:56:36That's a good header.
00:56:37That's a good header.
00:56:38That's a good header.
00:56:39That's a good header.
00:56:40That's a good header.
00:56:41That's a good header.
00:56:42That's a good header.
00:56:43That's a good header.
00:56:44That's a good header.
00:56:45That's a good header.
00:56:46That's a good header.
00:56:47That's a good header.
00:56:48That's a good header.
00:56:49That's a good header.
00:56:50That's a good header.
00:56:51That's a good header.
00:56:52That's a good header.
00:56:53That's a good header.
00:56:54That's a good header.
00:56:55That's a good header.
00:56:56That's a good header.
00:56:57That's a good header.
00:56:58That's a good header.
00:56:59That's a good header.

01:00:30That's a good header.
01:00:31That's a good header.
01:00:32That's a good header.
01:00:33That's a good header.
01:00:34That's a good header.
01:00:35That's a good header.
01:00:36That's a good header.
01:00:37That's a good header.
01:00:38That's a good header.
01:00:39That's a good header.
01:00:40That's a good header.
01:00:41That's a good header.
01:00:42That's a good header.
01:00:43That's a good header.
01:00:44That's a good header.
01:00:45That's a good header.
01:00:46That's a good header.
01:00:47That's a good header.
01:00:48That's a good header.
01:00:49That's a good header.
01:00:50That's a good header.
01:00:51That's a good header.
01:00:52That's a good header.
01:00:53Rapadula had seven shots in the first two games without scoring.
01:00:57As many as Lionel Messi, as many as Ricardo Pepe.
01:01:00Only Rodrigo of Brazil more shots in the first two games without getting a goal.
01:01:06Rapadula having one waved off for an offside decision.
01:01:09It would have put them up in what has become the must win game against Canada.
01:01:14They couldn't get the job done.
01:01:17Samuel Mattel all the way out behind Di Maria.
01:01:23Yeah, so here's La Celso.
01:01:24We got the close in up here.
01:01:26Now, keepers will try to play for this too.
01:01:28A little over exaggerating how much contact is coming.
01:01:31But pretty clearly there he gives him a bit of a pusher.
01:01:35He's backing up into Gallese.
01:01:38I think if Gallese really wanted to try to make a play on the ball,
01:01:41he probably could have a little bit more.
01:01:43But he's smart there and sold it to the ref.
01:01:47Taliafico, Latara, Martinez.
01:01:50Just gets in a tangle of legs there.
01:01:51Probably would have been Taliafico's second ever goal in 60 games had it stood up.
01:01:56That one's too far for Rivera.
01:01:58Boy, it stayed in play though.
01:02:00Peru charge it down.
01:02:02Rapadula popped up on him and it's knotted back.
01:02:05Payo Temendi to Emiliano Martinez.
01:02:09Round of 16 of the Euros continues tomorrow on Fox.
01:02:12England against Slovakia.
01:02:14Followed by Spain against the Republic of Georgia.
01:02:16Covered starts at 11 a.m. Eastern.
01:02:188 a.m. Pacific on Fox.
01:02:22Germany getting the job done on home soil today.
01:02:25Switzerland with the upset against defending champions Italy.
01:02:30The first two games of the round of 16.
01:02:34And our quarterfinal bracket is slowly starting to come into shape.
01:02:38We know Argentina's going to be there as it stands.
01:02:40Canada will join the no round of 16 at Copa America straight to the quarterfinals.
01:02:46Zambrano under some pressure.
01:02:48He's going to try to play it, yeah.
01:02:50Well, let's see if Argentina can break away now from Peru and put some...
01:02:54a bigger gap.
01:02:55Zambrano's been in the thick of it from the beginning.
01:02:57This time mixing it up with Lefalco Martinez once again.
01:03:02The two of them having a stare down.
01:03:04He's saying, hey, what are you doing?
01:03:06Oh, that's a little... that's a little naughty.
01:03:09Look at that.
01:03:10He says, get your hands off me.
01:03:13And a few other words which we can't repeat.
01:03:17Well, you're learning Spanish.
01:03:18You can probably figure some of them out.
01:03:20I didn't say I didn't know what they mean.
01:03:28Again on FS2 in Orlando.
01:03:30Scoreless between Canada and Chile.
01:03:33Chile had a man sent off after about half an hour in that one.
01:03:36They have to score.
01:03:37If they do, they're in.
01:03:39And Canada are out.
01:03:42Peru would need to win to have a chance of advancing.
01:03:46And Canada, if Argentina are winning,
01:03:48no chance of topping the group.
01:03:50They would be the runner up.
01:03:52And would go to Dallas on the 5th of July
01:03:55to take on the winner from Group B.
01:03:57Venezuela on top of that group right now.
01:03:59Huge gain.
01:04:00It's basically winner takes all
01:04:02between Mexico and Ecuador tomorrow in Phoenix.
01:04:05Ecuador would advance in a draw.
01:04:08Jamaica already eliminated.
01:04:09Venezuela know they're moving on.
01:04:12We'll see how these CONCACAF
01:04:142026 World Cup co-hosts do.
01:04:17Canada right now looks good for them.
01:04:20Mexico have to beat Ecuador tomorrow.
01:04:22And the U.S. on Monday.
01:04:23Last man back, Alexander Collins,
01:04:25to nod that away.
01:04:26Corzo gets his body between the ball.
01:04:28Latarra Martinez and draws the foul.
01:04:30Mateo is frustrated here
01:04:32that he let this one bounce the way that it did
01:04:34because it popped up
01:04:35and Collins was able to get back and clear the ball
01:04:38with a strong header.
01:04:41And by the way, Argentina have been just fine
01:05:04in recent years.
01:05:06Without Lionel Messi,
01:05:07you have to go back to the fall of 2018
01:05:09and a friendly against Brazil
01:05:11played in Saudi Arabia
01:05:12to find the last time Argentina lost a game
01:05:16without Messi at all.
01:05:18He doesn't miss many games.
01:05:21Walter Samuel and his Argentina team
01:05:24have the depth, they have the quality,
01:05:25even without one of the greatest of all time.
01:05:27Marcos Lopez trying to set up a long throw here.
01:05:29Half an hour left in Miami.
01:05:31Perrini to win this game to advance.
01:05:33In it comes towards Lapidula.
01:05:35And he committed a foul
01:05:36trying to get on the end of it.
01:05:40You referenced how few goals
01:05:49this Argentina team really do concede,
01:05:52let alone goal shots.
01:05:53And I just respect that so much
01:05:56about the way that Scaloni,
01:05:57who you get a look at there,
01:05:58he's getting a round of applause now from the crowd.
01:06:01But so often we have thought about South American teams,
01:06:04but Argentina and Brazil
01:06:05and associated them with flair players and skill
01:06:08and they have that.
01:06:10But since he's taken over this team
01:06:13and just made it at the core principle of this team
01:06:17that they are just so solid
01:06:19and so difficult to break down,
01:06:21knowing that against most teams,
01:06:22if they keep a zero,
01:06:23they're going to win the game.
01:06:25Di Maria trying to find the runners in there
01:06:27and comes through harmlessly to Galese.
01:06:30That was Palacios trying to volley it.
01:06:32And I still just respect,
01:06:33even in a game like this,
01:06:34that how committed they are to defending
01:06:36and closing down spaces.
01:06:37And they just never seem to be in positions
01:06:40where they're having to take risks in the back.
01:06:42And that's just down to team structure
01:06:44and give Scaloni a ton of credit for that.
01:06:47Good tackle there on Di Maria,
01:06:49open up to Rivera on the far side,
01:06:51not going to get there.
01:06:55More changes in the wings for Peru.
01:06:57Liliana Martinez set an Argentina record,
01:06:59eight consecutive shutouts,
01:07:01basically after the World Cup final.
01:07:04The only goal he's allowed in his last six starts
01:07:06was an own goal against Guatemala.
01:07:08He hasn't made a save tonight.
01:07:09So Liliana Martinez has saved
01:07:11the last nine actual shots that he's faced.
01:07:14But think about that.
01:07:15Last six times that Liliana Martinez has started,
01:07:18he's only faced nine actual shots.
01:07:21And there's two ways to look at that too.
01:07:23You could say, well, on one hand,
01:07:24he's playing for the best team in the world.
01:07:27But look at the game the other night against Chile.
01:07:29The game 0-0.
01:07:30They break away.
01:07:31They have three good chances in that game.
01:07:33And he comes up with two really, really good saves.
01:07:36And that's the reality of a goalkeeper
01:07:38for a team like this,
01:07:39is that you might not be constantly active
01:07:42through games and high volumes of saves and shots,
01:07:45but the ones that you have to make, you have to make.
01:07:47And that's what separates him
01:07:49and why he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world
01:07:52and has probably the best save in the history
01:07:54of the World Cup.
01:07:55Brian Reines, nine is down.
01:07:57Franco Zanalazzo is on.
01:08:00Just his sixth career appearance.
01:08:03Emiliano Martinez against Colomwani
01:08:05in the dying seconds of extra time
01:08:07of the World Cup final.
01:08:08Sent the game to a penalty shootout.
01:08:11Made a save in that penalty shootout.
01:08:15Di Maria taking a hit to the side of the head.
01:08:21And it was actually Copa America in 2021.
01:08:24That was when Emiliano Martinez took the job.
01:08:26They had a revolving door of goalkeepers.
01:08:28Eight different starting goalkeepers
01:08:30in Lionel Scaloni's first 25 games.
01:08:33And it wasn't even supposed to be Emiliano Martinez.
01:08:35It was supposed to be Franco Armani,
01:08:37longtime player in Argentina.
01:08:39He got COVID the week before
01:08:42that Copa America three years ago.
01:08:44And they had a couple of World Cup qualifiers
01:08:46before the tournament began.
01:08:48Emiliano Martinez got the start as a result
01:08:50and he became a star at that Copa America
01:08:54and has become a global star in the years since,
01:08:57including with Aston Villa.
01:08:59And a guy that even at club level
01:09:00just hung around for years as a backup,
01:09:03being loaned out different places.
01:09:05His chance came because of an injury
01:09:07and he hasn't given up since.
01:09:11I distinctly even remember in that tournament
01:09:13where there was no crowds
01:09:15and you could just hear him during penalty shootouts.
01:09:17Trash talking opponents.
01:09:18Speaking of which, you can't repeat on television.
01:09:20Yeah, exactly.
01:09:28Ponce is headed in the middle of the field.
01:09:30Not going to find Arnacho.
01:09:33Sergio Pena.
01:09:35Peru have 25 minutes to score two goals without reply.
01:09:38Argentina preparing two substitutions right now.
01:09:44In for Castillo.
01:09:46Out to the far side.
01:09:48And Ampadula not able to control that bouncing ball.
01:09:52Rather that was Sané, in fact, all the way out.
01:09:55So Nicol González will be coming on.
01:10:01Well, Garnacho was given the big chance.
01:10:03Didn't play any of the last four games in this camp.
01:10:0619-year-old turns 20 on Monday.
01:10:09What did you see?
01:10:11Mixed bag from Garnacho.
01:10:15In the moments where he had opportunities to go 1v1,
01:10:18he started to get defenders back penalty.
01:10:21But at the time,
01:10:22a tough game.
01:10:24You want to start a game as a young player.
01:10:26But in a game like this,
01:10:28almost coming on as a sub now,
01:10:30with how much time left?
01:10:32We've got 25 plus some stoppage.
01:10:34He would have come on now with a Peruvian defense
01:10:37that would have been exhausted and running at them
01:10:39and lighting the game up.
01:10:41So it's not always going to be pretty.
01:10:43And you're not always going to have the best opportunity
01:10:46to create things as an attacking player.
01:10:48So I thought he did fine.
01:10:50Totally fine in a game like this.
01:10:52He was 2v1 often.
01:10:54Put in a good shift defensively when he had to.
01:10:57So he'll be happy with that start.
01:10:59Marcos Lopez forcing the first save of the game
01:11:02out of Emiliano Martinez.
01:11:03And it's through his hands
01:11:05and out for Peru's first quarter of the game.
01:11:12He stepped into the midfield here, Lopez,
01:11:14and had a run to his left,
01:11:16but thought, I'm going to take this one by myself.
01:11:21Decent strike that was bending away from Emiliano Martinez,
01:11:24and he didn't want to take any chances there.
01:11:27Pushed that one behind for a corner.
01:11:29Just a sick save that he's had to make
01:11:31in almost three games.
01:11:35Argentina yet to allow a goal.
01:11:38They've allowed the fewest shots on goal of any team.
01:11:43Donaldo and Lopez over it.
01:11:46It'll be Marcos Lopez.
01:11:48Deep outswinger.
01:11:50Got knocked down there.
01:11:54And then a little bit of
01:11:55Zombrano in the initial header.
01:11:57It was Lapidula who went down.
01:11:58There's a yellow card shown.
01:12:01It's Leandro Paredes, it looked like,
01:12:03who got the yellow.
01:12:12Yeah, there you go.
01:12:13I'm not sure why even the need for that.
01:12:15I would imagine there was some type of
01:12:18off the ball, in the mix.
01:12:20They're marking each other.
01:12:22And a bit of frustration there.
01:12:24Two hands on the back.
01:12:25Absolutely a yellow card.
01:12:26I think Cesar Ramos has done a good job
01:12:28using his cards in the first half.
01:12:30Quieting things down.
01:12:32Second half, same thing.
01:12:33Set the tone early.
01:12:34And we haven't really seen this game spill over.
01:12:37And the ensuing corner on the other side
01:12:39for Peru is an outswinger.
01:12:40Zombrano is trying to get there.
01:12:43It's out of control to bring that down.
01:12:48Cesar Ramos giving Leandro Paredes
01:12:50a birthday card in the end,
01:12:51on his 30th birthday.
01:12:53Lopez got caught on the foot.
01:12:56On to the far side.
01:12:57Pena out-duel, hooked away by
01:12:59Nico Gonzalez.
01:13:06The game in Orlando is about a minute
01:13:08behind this game.
01:13:10We'll see if their long first half
01:13:12stoppage time.
01:13:14Peru would need to win this game
01:13:15to have a chance of advancing.
01:13:16Argentina know they're going on
01:13:17and is group winners as it stands.
01:13:19Canada are joining them as it stands.
01:13:21And they're playing against a Chilean team
01:13:24that is playing with ten after
01:13:25a first half red card.
01:13:26Chile need to win that game.
01:13:28A draw isn't enough to get them through.
01:13:30That pass got nutmegged in.
01:13:31Here they come for more.
01:13:33Argentina.
01:13:34Numbers coming forward.
01:13:35Di Maria gets it away.
01:13:36Montiel is at a handball.
01:13:39Cesar Ramos thinking about it.
01:13:41Gives it as a penalty.
01:13:47Well, the chance was in essence
01:13:49squandered by Argentina because
01:13:51the ball gets caught under Di Maria's feet.
01:13:53He eventually gets it out to Montiel
01:13:56who chips it up and you can see there
01:13:58it clearly hits the hand.
01:14:00Now, that's a penalty.
01:14:04For sure. Penalty.
01:14:05Castillo.
01:14:07If it hits the bottom hand,
01:14:08the sliding hand, that's been deemed
01:14:09by the laws that that's natural position.
01:14:13But that hand, the second hand,
01:14:14the upper hand is extended above his body.
01:14:17The Peruvian player is of course
01:14:18not happy about it.
01:14:20It's spilling over a little bit here.
01:14:21Cesar Ramos watching on.
01:14:23He's whistled for the penalty.
01:14:25I don't see any way this one gets overturned.
01:14:30And now if you're Argentina,
01:14:31don't get sucked into this type of game.
01:14:33Don't start picking up yellows
01:14:34and put yourself in jeopardy for
01:14:36missing matches and do something
01:14:38that you regret.
01:14:39Because Peru, for all intents and purposes,
01:14:41are out.
01:14:42And they're just thinking,
01:14:44hey, let's just,
01:14:46let's just blow this whole thing up.
01:14:47Let's just go crazy now.
01:14:51Well, that man's their normal penalty taker.
01:14:52He's on the bench.
01:14:55Guitar Martinez took a penalty
01:14:57against Guatemala in one of their
01:14:58warm-up games before Copa America.
01:15:01Paredes is holding the ball.
01:15:04DeMaria is wearing the captain's armband.
01:15:10You wonder if he's going to take it
01:15:11or is it going to be Paredes?
01:15:12Yeah.
01:15:13DeMaria was in it.
01:15:14He was guarding the spot.
01:15:15Handing it to the birthday boy.
01:15:17Trying to put a goal along with his card.
01:15:19Manager Paredes who turns 30 today.
01:15:33His last goal was just over a year ago
01:15:35in a game against Indonesia.
01:15:39And they aren't just checking this.
01:15:46He does have two penalty goals in his career
01:15:48back in 2019 with Argentina.
01:15:51A couple of penalty goals as well
01:15:53late this season
01:15:55with Roma, his club team.
01:15:57Pedro Galese said,
01:15:59can he keep Peru
01:16:01with any sort of a chance of advancing
01:16:03in the final 20 minutes?
01:16:04Or can the birthday boy, Leandro Paredes,
01:16:07slam the door tonight for Argentina?
01:16:09It's off the post!
01:16:11Still in there.
01:16:12Martinez blocked by Collins.
01:16:16And Peru are still alive.
01:16:26Wow.
01:16:27Look, he went for power.
01:16:28Just pure power and absolutely
01:16:29blasted this to the right side.
01:16:32There's no chance.
01:16:33Galese is saving this
01:16:34and that's your best hope
01:16:35is that he misses the target.
01:16:38And inches, but inches in this instance
01:16:41make a huge difference
01:16:44where that one just comes off the inside of the post.
01:16:47You can see the angle that it came off at.
01:16:50So Paredes misses one.
01:16:52He's on a yellow.
01:16:53Argentina still only one goal.
01:16:55Peru with a chance.
01:16:56Haven't put that killer goal in yet
01:16:58to create that separation.
01:17:00There's still a chance for this thing to get crazy
01:17:02in the final 20 minutes here
01:17:03and up the road in Orlando.
01:17:06It's up to Peru or Chile to make that happen.
01:17:08Di Maria long switch.
01:17:13First in the middle was Castillo
01:17:14but he couldn't connect the pass with Zanilato.
01:17:22That's going to be whistled for a foul
01:17:24as Castillo is late.
01:17:29Montiel's down in pain.
01:17:37Just took a knee to the back of the calf there
01:17:40until it hits his right leg.
01:17:52Would you consider this an underwhelming group stage
01:17:55or is that too much scoreboard watching
01:17:57and misses the point of what makes Argentina great?
01:18:00I'm not worried about this from Argentina.
01:18:02As far as they would be concerned
01:18:04and the way that I would analyze it as well
01:18:06is that even while resting Lionel Messi in the third game
01:18:11they get nine points as it stands.
01:18:13They're cruising into the quarterfinals.
01:18:15No concern at all.
01:18:19And all those games too,
01:18:20they've absolutely dominated.
01:18:21They dominated tonight.
01:18:24Zanil Di Maria now has the assist
01:18:26and a lone goal from Arturo Martinez.
01:18:28Early in this second half switch to the far side.
01:18:30Nico Gonzalez put it wide.
01:18:32Unless he didn't seem quite sure where that ball was going.
01:18:35It was Enzo Fernandez in fact.
01:18:41Di Maria has had a really good game for Argentina.
01:18:44He was lively in the first half creating chances.
01:18:46This one again just cutting across the middle of field
01:18:49as he does so often.
01:18:50He's so dangerous because he can chop you back
01:18:52and go right if he needs to.
01:18:54But you have to be honest
01:18:55in the way that you defend him.
01:18:57That time he sprays one out
01:18:58with a good pace into Enzo Fernandez.
01:19:01Takes the first touch
01:19:02and just try to come back to the near post on Delesa
01:19:05and misses the opportunity.
01:19:08I think it's interesting with Di Maria
01:19:09because we thought of everything last few years
01:19:11as the great redemption for Messi, right?
01:19:13He finally got a title with Argentina.
01:19:16He finally got a World Cup.
01:19:18Di Maria was a part of all of those failures
01:19:21in air quotes as well.
01:19:22The difference being he couldn't help.
01:19:24He was knocked out through injury
01:19:26in the 2014 World Cup
01:19:27in the Copa America tournaments in 2015 and 2016.
01:19:31It was Di Maria who scored the winning goal
01:19:33in the Copa America final in Brazil three years ago.
01:19:36And scored a goal in the final in Qatar.
01:19:37Yeah, great goal too.
01:19:39So it's been really just as remarkable
01:19:41a redemption for legend in his own right,
01:19:44Angel Di Maria.
01:19:45Even as Messi, understandably,
01:19:47gets most of the global headlines.
01:19:49Marcos Lopez is banged up.
01:19:51He was slow to rejoin the play.
01:19:54Now he's defending.
01:19:56Collins held it in for a moment.
01:19:58Di Maria steps in and wriggles away.
01:20:00And he's just, at that point,
01:20:02maybe trying to avoid a crunching tackle.
01:20:04Pena.
01:20:07A wrestling match there.
01:20:08Free kick coming for Peru.
01:20:12As Palacios stepped in.
01:20:14As Argentina prepare two more subs.
01:20:25Two players who have not yet seen
01:20:28the field of this Copa America.
01:20:32Just the 65,000 here at Hard Rock Stadium.
01:20:36That is full capacity as it was.
01:20:3980,000 and change.
01:20:4180,000 and change at MetLife.
01:20:44And 70,000 and change in Atlanta.
01:20:50And I think pretty safe to assume
01:20:52it would be a sellout in Houston at NRG.
01:20:56They pack the house wherever they go.
01:20:57Marcos Lopez, ensuing free kick,
01:20:59gets popped in the air.
01:21:00Collins trying to throw his body in there.
01:21:02It's headed away.
01:21:07And the substitutions will come now.
01:21:09It'll be a curtain call.
01:21:10Game winning assist as it stands.
01:21:12Sixth career at Copa America for Angel Di Maria.
01:21:18This was on the penalty decision.
01:21:20What they were reviewing was that
01:21:22Montiel was onside and he was.
01:21:41And Paredes joins him on his birthday.
01:21:43Took a yellow card, penalty kick off the post.
01:21:46Not quite exactly as he might have drawn it up.
01:21:51Marcos Lopez who forced the one shot on goal.
01:21:53It is the first shot on goal.
01:21:55No, it is the one that's been claimed.
01:21:58His night is done.
01:22:01Christian Cueva is on for his 100th
01:22:03international appearance for Peru.
01:22:06The ninth man to reach that mark.
01:22:09And he's had quite a road to get here.
01:22:11Has not played for a club team since October.
01:22:15Suffered a knee injury.
01:22:16He was out of contract in Saudi Arabia.
01:22:18Has been rehabbing this spring
01:22:20with the Peruvian national team staff.
01:22:22And it was a huge question of whether
01:22:24he would even make this roster.
01:22:25But he is on.
01:22:28Played the last 11 minutes against Canada.
01:22:30Comes on to hit a clean 100
01:22:33in his international career.
01:22:36As Peru are out of subs.
01:22:38And it was Guido Rodriguez and Valentin Carboni
01:22:40who some might start this game.
01:22:44Both on to play at Copa America
01:22:46for the first time this year.
01:22:47Carboni, another teenager.
01:22:50Alejandro Garnacho.
01:22:56Carboni, a player that Lionel Messi himself
01:22:58was very impressed with.
01:23:00He said, the version of him he saw
01:23:04at the Inter-20 World Cup last May.
01:23:06The version he saw coming into
01:23:07Argentina's senior camp in March.
01:23:09We're excited to get him on the field
01:23:11last 12 minutes and change.
01:23:18The men of the United States are back in action.
01:23:20Monday night.
01:23:21Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City
01:23:23against Uruguay.
01:23:25Final day of Group C.
01:23:27And they avenge the defeat to Panama.
01:23:30Pull off a huge win against the 15-time champions.
01:23:34Warmer starts at 8 p.m. Eastern.
01:23:365 o'clock Pacific on FS1.
01:23:40That's the penalty again from Paredes.
01:23:42Galicia had gone the wrong way.
01:23:45Smacked off the post and out.
01:23:48They'll be sitting down with Greg Berhalter
01:23:50and a player or two tomorrow in Kansas City
01:23:52at the Team Hotel.
01:23:54Does it matter what you hear?
01:23:55Is it a matter at this point of what
01:23:57you hope to see on the field
01:23:59from the U.S. on Monday night?
01:24:02Look, at this point, it's not about talking.
01:24:05It's about actions.
01:24:06It's about getting results on the field.
01:24:07Disappointing result, of course.
01:24:09Game didn't go the way that the U.S. had hoped
01:24:12early on.
01:24:14They concede the late goal.
01:24:15Devastated.
01:24:16But, look, the reality is they're on 3 points
01:24:18and it can still be in their hands
01:24:20if they get the results against Uruguay.
01:24:22So, go out and win the game.
01:24:24Don't leave any question marks.
01:24:26Easier said than done.
01:24:27It's a tough opponent that's sitting on 6 points.
01:24:30We don't know what to expect from Uruguay.
01:24:32They might rotate some players as well,
01:24:34which, again, much like Argentina,
01:24:36not the same type of depth,
01:24:37but they have some pretty good players
01:24:40in reserve over there
01:24:41and it'll be difficult.
01:24:42I hope it's a loud, big crowd in Kansas City.
01:24:46I can't wait for it.
01:24:47I'm excited for that match as well,
01:24:48but a lot riding on that one.
01:24:50It's going to be a high-pressure match
01:24:52for the United States and Greg Berhalter.
01:24:54We've seen this team deliver
01:24:55with their backs against the wall.
01:24:56They got the job done against Iran at the World Cup.
01:24:59Remember when it looked like World Cup qualifying
01:25:01was going to fly off the rails.
01:25:03Even a couple weeks ago,
01:25:04the loss to Colombia
01:25:05and the way they responded against Brazil.
01:25:10And they wake up the echoes from 1995,
01:25:12a team at Copa America
01:25:14that had zero chance against Argentina.
01:25:16Beat them 3-0 in a win they had to have.
01:25:18Alexey Laudis and company
01:25:20to advance to the knockout round.
01:25:23We're so looking forward,
01:25:24and as you rightly said,
01:25:26looking forward as well, hopefully,
01:25:27to a terrific atmosphere at Arrowhead Stadium.
01:25:30The stadium has delivered some epic nights
01:25:32for the normal home team,
01:25:33the Kansas City Chiefs,
01:25:35and deliver an epic night
01:25:36for the men of the United States Monday.
01:25:43So inside of 10 minutes plus stop,
01:25:45it's time to go here in Miami, Peru,
01:25:47needing a win to have any chance of advancing.
01:25:51The game of the group in Orlando
01:25:53remains scoreless.
01:25:55Chile have been playing
01:25:58since before the 30th minute
01:26:01with 10 men after an early red card.
01:26:03It was two yellows as well.
01:26:05Comes in to Zanolato for Peru,
01:26:07and he'll thought he got a corner out of it,
01:26:10but it bounced last off of him
01:26:12as Pizella made the block,
01:26:13and it's out for a goal kick.
01:26:19Zanolato gets him down to the end line,
01:26:21but you can see Pizella
01:26:23with just enough of a touch on that.
01:26:25Good clearance, got his leg across it,
01:26:27hit into him, and out for a goal kick.
01:26:29See some nice spells of possession too
01:26:31from Argentina,
01:26:32building from deep in their own half.
01:26:35Still keeping three very high up,
01:26:37so it means that Peru,
01:26:39they want to be adventurous
01:26:40and try to really high press.
01:26:41They have to step up.
01:26:42It's going to leave a lot of space.
01:26:43They haven't done so,
01:26:44although they've won this ball back
01:26:46for a half second here.
01:26:47Got Argentina under some pressure.
01:26:48That one's going to be whistled for a foul.
01:26:53Argentina are going to clear their bench out here.
01:26:55Lucas Martinez-Cuarta,
01:26:56who has not played so far,
01:26:58will replace Ramon Pizella.
01:27:03Martinez-Cuarta started the opener
01:27:06at the last Copa America.
01:27:09Sergio Romero was banged up
01:27:11in just his second call-up
01:27:12in the last two and a half years
01:27:15for this tournament
01:27:17to make his 15th international appearance
01:27:19at the age of 28.
01:27:23And the fifth and final sub
01:27:25for Argentina tonight.
01:27:30So Chile need a goal,
01:27:31despite playing down a man
01:27:34up in Orlando.
01:27:35Canada, as it stands,
01:27:36advancing as the runner-up.
01:27:38With just one goal scored,
01:27:39is that right?
01:27:42One goal against Peru,
01:27:44which they got after...
01:27:45And look, they had a tough...
01:27:46Two teams haven't scored a single goal.
01:27:47Yeah, it's crazy.
01:27:48I mean, look, that's...
01:27:49It's about getting to the knockout stages,
01:27:51and then you go from there.
01:27:52It's R. Martinez.
01:27:53Already is one.
01:27:54Got the man on the deck.
01:27:56It's saved by Galese.
01:27:57It's cleared by Collins.
01:27:59That was Corzo.
01:28:02And that ankle's broken there.
01:28:07Full save for Galese.
01:28:17The youngsters keep up the beat.
01:28:23A late Chile goal would change it.
01:28:25It would send them through
01:28:26and knock Canada out.
01:28:29Some work not done for Canada,
01:28:31even despite the man advantage
01:28:32up in Orlando right now.
01:28:33That game on FS2.
01:28:36I would love to get a goal
01:28:37and just be sure.
01:28:39And we'll find out the opponents
01:28:41for these two teams.
01:28:42Whoever's going to be advancing,
01:28:43for sure, tomorrow night.
01:28:46Venezuela top Group B.
01:28:47They know they're advancing.
01:28:48Ecuador and Mexico.
01:28:50They'll play each other in Phoenix.
01:28:52Winner moves on, loser goes home.
01:28:54Ecuador advances with a draw.
01:28:56He's looked sharp tonight.
01:28:58Matauro Martinez.
01:28:59Great chop there, too.
01:29:00The way he just sells that one on Corzo,
01:29:02gets him on the deck.
01:29:04Strikes him with his left foot.
01:29:06I think, again, a statement performance
01:29:08to him, to his manager.
01:29:10Be interested to see what Scaloni
01:29:12ends up doing in that quarter-final
01:29:13match on July 4th.
01:29:16Does Alvarez play?
01:29:18Does Martinez play?
01:29:20Does Messi play?
01:29:23Because I've got to say,
01:29:24if I was Matauro Martinez,
01:29:25I'd be beyond frustrated if I wasn't
01:29:27starting after scoring three goals
01:29:29in three games.
01:29:30What else are you asking from a guy?
01:29:31And not just that, too.
01:29:33His back-to-goal play, his hold-up play,
01:29:35his movement, he's been lively.
01:29:37Looks like he's going to go the full 90 minutes
01:29:39in this match as Julian Alvarez
01:29:42gets the full day off.
01:29:48It would be an interesting reverse
01:29:49from the World Cup, where Matauro Martinez
01:29:51began the tournament as the starter
01:29:53and lost his spot to Julian Alvarez.
01:29:55It ends up being
01:29:57the opposite at Copa America.
01:30:03Look at the return inside.
01:30:05Carboni, can he get there?
01:30:06No, he was just cut off there.
01:30:08Castillo got his body in front in time.
01:30:19Yeah, it's been that kind of a sweltering night.
01:30:24Cutting to all the fans.
01:30:26No?
01:30:30No, I got him.
01:30:31No, you're just going to leave it hanging?
01:30:32All right, you're just going to leave it hanging.
01:30:34Okay.
01:30:36Thanks for being sure.
01:30:37Oh, man.
01:30:39Corso pushed off.
01:30:40Can he recover?
01:30:41No!
01:30:42Martinez puts it in!
01:30:44Matauro Martinez, second goal of the night,
01:30:47fourth of the group stage.
01:30:50Peru are arguing behind the play.
01:30:52There should be a foul.
01:30:54But Argentina cruising into the knockout stages.
01:31:02Yeah, the entire Peruvian team now,
01:31:04Jorge Fusati as well going to the fourth official.
01:31:06They're all crowding around the referee here.
01:31:09We'll get a look at what happens here.
01:31:12As this one pops up from Corso initially,
01:31:14and then it's just lumped up into the air.
01:31:16He's backtracking towards his own goal.
01:31:18It's a bit of a push there on his back.
01:31:20And it's a cool finish from Matauro Martinez.
01:31:24I think the hard part, the decision here subjectively,
01:31:27whether this is a foul or not,
01:31:29is that Corso's still able to stay on his feet
01:31:31to try to make that.
01:31:33So it's about how much of a push.
01:31:35I do actually think that's a foul there.
01:31:37I think that Corso's running back towards his own goal,
01:31:39and he's thrown completely off balance.
01:31:41If he falls away straight away there, it's absolutely...
01:31:44You actually saw behind that shot,
01:31:45Cesar Ramos has his whistle in his mouth,
01:31:48ready to make the call.
01:31:49And then he pulls it away.
01:31:51Great finish again, just lifting it over Galese.
01:31:55But to me, it's a full extension of the arm in Corso's back.
01:31:59And I think that's a foul.
01:32:01You pretty consistently see that called
01:32:03when it's an attacker on a defender
01:32:05into the back of the defender who's facing his own goal.
01:32:11And I think what gave Cesar Ramos down,
01:32:14and Zambrano's going to pick up a yellow card here for just...
01:32:17He's completely lost it.
01:32:19Now his teammates are forcing him away.
01:32:22It's being reviewed, but he's saying goal.
01:32:24I think he's pointing and saying goal.
01:32:26Guillermo Pacheco of Mexico is the video assistant referee again.
01:32:30We're not looking for a clear and obvious error.
01:32:32We're looking for the correct call, the correct outcome.
01:32:38But you don't seem to think that's the correct call.
01:32:40Well, you know, like I said,
01:32:42it's a subjective decision on whether you feel that's a foul or not.
01:32:47And Cesar Ramos, I think his initial instinct
01:32:52was that that's not enough of a push,
01:32:54that it's not a foul.
01:32:56But I think that that's a foul.
01:32:58But the goal's going to stand.
01:33:00And by the way, Latorre Martinez now nine goals
01:33:03in 13 career Copa America matches.
01:33:06He's owned this tournament in his time.
01:33:18Takes him to 28 goals in his career.
01:33:22Eighth most in Argentina's history.
01:33:27Sane has that one knocked out.
01:33:33Good ball inside.
01:33:34Cross is clipped up.
01:33:35Lapidou will let it go.
01:33:36The header off the inside of the post from Zanalotto.
01:33:40And then it spins around the other post
01:33:43and out for a goal kick.
01:33:46That's good movement in the box.
01:33:49And that header, oh my goodness, so close there.
01:33:53Just comes off the inside, as you said,
01:33:55and the spin from Zanalotto.
01:33:58Good run from Lapidou to the near post
01:34:00that creates that gap between the defenders.
01:34:03And Zanalotto just attacks it.
01:34:05Great header.
01:34:07Down and into the post.
01:34:09And Emi Martinez, no chance he's getting to that one.
01:34:12And thankfully, he just watches that one spin away
01:34:16and goes behind for a goal kick.
01:34:18By that margin, they still haven't conceded a goal.
01:34:21At this Copa America, Zambrano,
01:34:23it won't matter now.
01:34:24That would have led him to be suspended
01:34:26for the quarterfinal,
01:34:27the second yellow card of the group stage.
01:34:36Argentina in.
01:34:37They knew that coming in.
01:34:38It was just a matter of whether they win the group or not.
01:34:40Canada 90 seconds plus stoppage time away from joining him.
01:34:44Lapidou saw Martinez off his line,
01:34:47but he puts it in the stands.
01:34:55Look at that finish again.
01:34:57That's such a hard finish to stop as a goalkeeper
01:35:00because you're trying to stay big,
01:35:03and then you're trying to decide,
01:35:05do I throw myself with the legs of the attacking player?
01:35:07Do I try to guess either side
01:35:09and just such a deaf little chip over?
01:35:13Four minutes to go.
01:35:16I checked in with our resident defender on the panel
01:35:18back in the studio, by the way, Alexey Lalas,
01:35:20and he feels it's a foul as well.
01:35:22A defender would in that situation.
01:35:25What are the two attackers sitting next to?
01:35:28We'll find out after the game.
01:35:40Oh, what a game.
01:35:48A little bit of chaos created by Chile on the goal mouth
01:35:51from a set piece, but Maxime Crepeau,
01:35:53what a tournament he's had so far.
01:35:56Able to snare it.
01:35:57They will go into stoppage time in Orlando.
01:36:00Canada as it stands advancing.
01:36:04With the skin of their teeth right now,
01:36:05they're going to play six added minutes.
01:36:09As that was Zanalopto, went flying past there.
01:36:12We've got numbers falling,
01:36:13almost finding the feet of Enzo Fernandez there.
01:36:17Chile goal would put them into the knockout stage,
01:36:20would send Canada home.
01:36:25Five saves tonight for Maxime Crepeau.
01:36:40And a free kick for Peru.
01:36:47Well, barring a miracle here,
01:36:49a late miracle from Peru, just a job done from Argentina.
01:36:54More down Peru in the first half,
01:36:56forced them to defend, waste energy,
01:36:58early in the second half,
01:37:00and now they've got a free kick for Peru.
01:37:03And a free kick for Peru.
01:37:05More down Peru in the first half,
01:37:07forced them to defend, waste energy.
01:37:09Oh, quick free kick.
01:37:12Nice Christian Cueva.
01:37:16And yeah, kind of hooked that one in,
01:37:18sent right back out,
01:37:19and then blasted over.
01:37:21Did it take a touch?
01:37:22It was Castillo's shot.
01:37:23It did hit someone in a white and blue shirt
01:37:26out for a corner.
01:37:29Quick, get the selfie and throw it back.
01:37:32Let the young man get a selfie too.
01:37:44Well, Canada have put the ball in the net.
01:37:46It looks like it might be offside.
01:37:49It's been reviewed.
01:37:52Antonio Sashewi of Minnesota United thought he had it.
01:37:56Still they're advancing.
01:37:57Four minutes of stoppage time to go in Orlando.
01:38:01We will take you to the conclusion of that one
01:38:03when this game finishes.
01:38:09And Peña picking up a yellow card now.
01:38:12And they're just going to sing louder.
01:38:16The show rolls on, John.
01:38:18Roll on Houston for Argentina
01:38:20and the Alba Celeste fans.
01:38:24See who their opponent is,
01:38:25but I haven't seen anything to dissuade me
01:38:27from the opinion that they're
01:38:28Stonewall favorites for this tournament.
01:38:30Colombia trying to do their best
01:38:31to put themselves in the mix,
01:38:32but just another complete performance
01:38:34with nine changes in the game.
01:38:36They still get a goal.
01:38:37Martinez with two more.
01:38:38He's on four.
01:38:39If he doesn't start in that quarterfinal,
01:38:41boy, oh boy.
01:38:43But this team is just so deep, so strong, so complete.
01:38:48And just in such a rhythm and confidence right now.
01:38:52So Scaloni watching from above.
01:38:54Messi gets a rest.
01:38:56Job done for Argentina.
01:38:57Nine points, top of the group.
01:38:59And it's suffocating, the nine points.
01:39:01They've scored five goals.
01:39:02They've only allowed eight shots on goal
01:39:05in the group stage.
01:39:08And that's the end.
01:39:11A perfect group stage for the defending champions.
01:39:15And they're headed to Houston for the 4th of July.
01:39:17Who's going to join them?
01:39:18We'll find out.
01:39:19Let's send you up the road north to Orlando
01:39:21for the conclusion of Canada and Chile.
01:39:24Taken by Perez.
01:39:26Lifted backside.
01:39:28Canada get it away.
01:39:33And that's going to roll out.
01:39:35And Canada will take that
01:39:37as the seconds continue to ooze off the clock.
01:39:42Wilmer Rodon just pointed to his watch,
01:39:45looking at the Canada goalkeeper, Maxime Crepeau,
01:39:48saying, I'm watching you.
01:39:49If you take too much time, I'll just add it on.
01:39:51One more change for Canada.
01:39:55Kamal Miller.
01:39:58Is replacing Jonathan David,
01:40:00who is taking his time going off the field.
01:40:04And the Chile players don't appreciate that.
01:40:10Canada fans.
01:40:12A couple minutes away, possibly,
01:40:14from seeing their side into the quarters.
01:40:18Kamal Miller plays for Portland Timbers.
01:40:22This is his 45th appearance for Canada.
01:40:26On to help shut the door
01:40:28over these final couple minutes.
01:40:31They're praying for a late goal.
01:40:41This is going to be run on to by Isla.
01:40:46Perez.
01:40:47It's got to go forward for Chile.
01:40:49They've got to go forward.
01:40:51They have to take those risks now.
01:40:53And Perez has some space.
01:40:55Takes the shot.
01:40:56It's deflected forward.
01:40:57Crepeau had it taken away by a teammate.
01:40:59But it's going to work out for Canada
01:41:01as it's hacked away by Bambito.
01:41:05One back.
01:41:06Here comes Chile again.
01:41:07Clipped backside.
01:41:10Up in the air.
01:41:11They can't find it.
01:41:13I don't think Johnston was sure who that was off last
01:41:15and felt he had to play it.
01:41:17And that's going to deflect off a Chile player
01:41:19and that's a goal kick.
01:41:21And Canada are almost there.
01:41:28Here's the VAR check from a couple minutes ago.
01:41:31Canada thought they had the goal that would have put it away.
01:41:34But Oluwasey was offside.
01:41:36Great finish.
01:41:37Good ball from Tejan Buchanan.
01:41:39Slightly mistimed.
01:41:42Now how much additional time does Will Don add on here
01:41:46at the end of the six minutes?
01:41:47Remember that VAR check took over a minute.
01:41:50The six minutes is a minimum in theory.
01:41:54It's at the referee's discretion beyond that.
01:41:58This is just about the last chance for Chile.
01:42:02Last chance for the last members of their golden generation
01:42:05to keep their dream of one more Copa America alive.
01:42:10Diaz.
01:42:12Hammered out of play.
01:42:13Almost out of the stadium by Bambito.
01:42:17Late attacking throw for Chile.
01:42:19Very late.
01:42:27Galdames ready to launch.
01:42:36Lots of prayers being said.
01:42:42All kinds of grabbing and pushing in the penalty box
01:42:44before this throw.
01:42:47Will probably decide this game and decide who advances.
01:42:54Canada as it stands.
01:42:55Chile if they score.
01:42:56It's got to go in for Chile.
01:42:59It's launched in for Chile.
01:43:00It's flicked on.
01:43:01It's still loose.
01:43:03It's prodded along.
01:43:04Alexis Sanchez.
01:43:06Sanchez.
01:43:07One more opportunity.
01:43:08Pings it across.
01:43:09Great ball with one hand.
01:43:10Brings it in.
01:43:12He reeled it in.
01:43:14And Macy Canada to the quarters.
01:43:26It was not pretty from Canada.
01:43:29It'll work.
01:43:32Almost a perfect cross.
01:43:34You see Maripan was ready to head that home
01:43:36if it had gotten over Krepo.
01:43:38And there's the final whistle.
01:43:39It is over.
01:43:41One of the biggest results in Canadian men's soccer history.
01:43:45They are out of the group.
01:43:46And they are in the Copa America quarterfinals.
01:43:50It finishes tonight in Orlando.
01:43:53Canada nil.
01:43:54Chile nil.
01:44:01Copa America 2024 tonight on Fox is presented by Geico.
01:44:05That draw as good as a win for Canada.
01:44:08Canada 0-0 in Orlando.
01:44:10And the Maple Leafs in their Copa America debut
01:44:13are off to the knockout stage.
01:44:17Images come in.
01:44:18And the golden generation of Chile.
01:44:20I think this is the last time we're going to see them.
01:44:22They need an overhaul as they are bounced here in the group stage.
01:44:25But congratulations to Jesse Marsh and Company Marsh.
01:44:29The American head coach for Canada took over in mid-May.
01:44:32Clint, they had a man advantage for a majority of that game.
01:44:35Unable to get the goal.
01:44:37But they are able to move on.
01:44:39Like you talked about, they did have a man advantage.
01:44:41But you wouldn't have really noticed it.
01:44:43I thought Chile did a good job being a man down.
01:44:45Still trying to get the goal that they needed to win the game.
01:44:48Canada, credit to them.
01:44:50They got the job done.
01:44:51But they're not the most exciting team to watch.
01:44:53They've only scored one goal this whole competition.
01:44:56If you're someone who likes to see goals, which I do.
01:44:59But hey, credit to Jesse Marsh.
01:45:01Credit to this Canada side.
01:45:03And they're through.
01:45:04You know who would have taken an unexciting, boring, 0-0 game?
01:45:11The U.S.
01:45:13It doesn't matter.
01:45:15Congratulations to Jesse Marsh.
01:45:16Congratulations to Canada.
01:45:18And not just for this in terms of the tournament going forward.
01:45:20Again, this is a prelude.
01:45:22This is a test for him and his team going forward.
01:45:25Because they are, like the United States and Mexico, hosting the 26th World Cup.
01:45:29And this is going to serve them well going forward into the future.
01:45:32And right now, they're flying the CONCACAF flag.
01:45:34They are.
01:45:35They are the only CONCACAF team through to the quarterfinals.
01:45:38Argentina, Venezuela, and Colombia, Carly, already through to the final eight.
01:45:43Yeah, I think this Canadian side, I mean, I think they grew into it defensively.
01:45:48I think the first game against Argentina, they were very susceptible
01:45:52and vulnerable in that back line, playing with a high back line.
01:45:56But not the most exciting attack, like we just said.
01:46:00But, you know, they got the job done.
01:46:02And that's ultimately what you have to do in group stage.
01:46:05And then you're moving on to the next.
01:46:07Group eight, really remarkable.
01:46:09Six goals total were scored.
01:46:12Five from Argentina.
