00:00This odd-looking aeroplane from Otto Aviation called Celera 500L is coming to revolutionize
00:07traveling forever by cutting fuel consumption eight times and bringing emission-free electric
00:12aviation incredibly closer.
00:16Thanks to the super smooth laminar flow surfaces, high aspect ratio wings, and an innovative
00:21lightweight V12 diesel engine, the plane gets fuel economy figures between an incredible
00:2618 to 25 miles per gallon, better than a large SUV and an average pickup truck.
00:33But the efficiency will be further improved once Celera is equipped with hydrogen electric
00:37powertrain in the second stage.
00:40The key secret in achieving superior aerodynamics resulting in massive savings on fuel and emissions
00:46lies in the egg-shaped design of the aircraft, which helps achieve laminar flow on the plane's
00:52surface, reducing drag by 59% compared to a similarly sized aircraft.
00:58Laminar flow allows for a smoother penetration through the air, with little to no mixing
01:02of adjacent layers, unlike turbulent flow, which happens when the flow is mixed or chaotic.
01:09This enables a massive leap in efficiency, speed, and range compared to traditional plane
01:13geometries.
01:15Celera can cover a distance of about 5,100 miles, which is more than enough to travel,
01:21for example, from Alaska to Mexico, using 80% less fuel than a comparable airplane.
01:27Besides, Otto doesn't use the wings to store fuel.
01:31The long and skinny wings are to provide maximum lift and minimum drag, due to which it has
01:36reached an impressive glide ratio of 22 to 1, allowing pilots to switch off the engine
01:42altogether and glide unpowered for up to 125 miles, which the company says is roughly three
01:48times better than the typical aircraft.
01:52The airplane's excellent aerodynamic design enables reaching high speed and altitude without
01:57using expensive jet engines.
02:00To match its most efficient aerodynamic body, the Celera 500L is equipped with a single
02:05turbocharged V12 diesel engine at the back, designed by German manufacturer RED.
02:11The position of the piston engine helps prevent the laminar flow from distorting and provides
02:15better acceleration.
02:18Because laminar flow makes the plane require less energy, the engine bay could be filled
02:22with an electric motor, which we'll get to shortly in the video.
02:27The engine is expected to eventually be able to push the airplane up to 460 miles per hour
02:32at 50,000 feet, which is an excellent result for an affordable aircraft.
02:38Since Celera's design benefits will not scale upwards to full-size airliners, the initial
02:43version of the plane is designed to carry six passengers in a business cabin scalable
02:48to 19 passengers later on.
02:50And with a running cost of $328, it will be five times more cost-effective than biz jets
02:57with comparable performance and comfort.
03:00In the end, the goal of this amazing project is to create an aircraft that would allow
03:04for direct flights between any city pair at speeds and cost comparable to commercial airfares,
03:10but with the added convenience of private aviation.
03:14It offers a spacious stand-up cabin with first-class seats and a lavatory.
03:19Celera needs a short takeoff length, which means it will have direct access to over 5,000
03:24regional airports, unlike commercial airlines that serve only about 500 airports in the
03:29US, allowing passengers to avoid airport congestion, flight delays or cancellations and arrive
03:35closer to their destinations.
03:39And with more than 55 successful test flights, Otto Aviation is planning to bring its extraordinary
03:44aircraft to the market by 2025.
03:50While scientists are working on improving the energy density of batteries, Otto has
03:54announced a collaboration with hydrogen aviation pioneers ZeroAvia to develop a 600kW hydrogen
04:01fuel cell powertrain for the revolutionary Celera aircraft.
04:06Hydrogen is used in fuel cells to generate electricity, which is then used to power electric
04:11motors to turn the aircraft's propellers, with the only byproduct being water.
04:16Initially, the hydrogen powertrain is set to provide about 1,150 miles of zero-emission
04:22range, which can still be considered a useful distance.
04:26For example, in a couple of years you can fly from Los Angeles to Seattle without making
04:31any emissions.
04:33Coupled with the inventions towards a big cut of green hydrogen production costs, this
04:37can make emission-free short-distance flights mainstream.
04:42Do you believe the Celera 500L is the biggest thing to happen to both aviation and travel
04:47industries in the near future?
