00:00I think it's surprising exactly what was happening behind the scenes of the show.
00:03It was a very dramatic show.
00:05Welcome to Miz Mojo and today we're counting down our picks for the most
00:10infamous controversies that have unfolded on the eclectic panel of the long-running talk show,
00:16The View.
00:16It's like being Frankenstein, people coming after you with the fire and they're gonna burn you.
00:22Number 10, Star Jones Surprise Exit
00:26In June 2006, after nearly 10 years on the show, original panelist Star Jones surprised
00:33everyone by announcing her departure.
00:35This came as a shock, not only to the viewers, but also to her fellow panelists.
00:40Hot topics? No, that's the hot topic.
00:43That's not a hot topic.
00:44I thought we were going to talk about recess.
00:45That's the hottest topic.
00:46Now, wait a minute, after nine years, now you want to talk about me.
00:49Let's go to hot topics.
00:50Behind the scenes, Jones had been informed that her contract would not be renewed
00:55and was given a specific date to reveal this.
00:58However, she decided to break the news two days earlier,
01:02catching everyone off guard, especially creator and co-host Barbara Walters.
01:08We've heard rumors, we have read rumors.
01:12This is a surprise.
01:14This would come about this way.
01:15We did not expect it.
01:16By the next episode, Jones, who was originally slated to stay another month,
01:20was absent from the panel.
01:22Walters then informed the audience that Jones wouldn't be returning,
01:26expressing that she felt betrayed by her premature announcement.
01:30Did she have words with you after that day that you fatefully announced
01:34that you were leaving the show live on the air and caught a lot of people by surprise?
01:39It was the best moment.
01:41Really? You love her.
01:43Sipping that tea.
01:46Number nine, Elizabeth Hasselbeck's campaign t-shirt.
01:49President Clinton, he said, I like John McCain.
01:51Had it not been for John McCain,
01:52I'm not sure I could have normalized relations with Vietnam.
01:54And I think when it comes to foreign policy,
01:56I think everyone knows that it will be a huge strength of Senator McCain's.
02:00During the 2008 presidential campaigns, Elizabeth Hasselbeck,
02:04the show's sole conservative voice,
02:07expressed her political stance by wearing a t-shirt supporting John McCain on air.
02:12The shirt, which was designed by Hasselbeck herself,
02:15was later listed on the official McCain campaign website.
02:19According to a supposed insider,
02:22Hasselbeck's choice of attire allegedly sparked numerous complaints from viewers at home,
02:27as well as the studio audience.
02:30So what qualifies men, even though he's been around?
02:33No, we're talking about bad judgment all the way around.
02:36That's what we're talking about.
02:37This reportedly led to Hasselbeck being warned by the network and the show's producers
02:42to refrain from wearing the shirt again.
02:45However, a representative for The View denied these claims,
02:48stating that while the attire may not have been appropriate,
02:51Hasselbeck had the right to express herself freely.
02:55Our debates will go on and on. We'll just, we'll keep going over the same thing.
02:59Number eight, Whoopi Goldberg shuts down Meghan McCain.
03:03Meghan McCain has been pretty open about feeling
03:06unwelcome during her four-year tenure on the panel of The View.
03:10One particular co-host she has referenced is Whoopi Goldberg,
03:14accusing her of displaying open disdain towards her.
03:18If true, then this would be a glaring manifestation of that hostility.
03:22I'm okay with that. If you're going to behave like this.
03:25In 2019, during a heated discussion about the looming impeachment of Donald Trump,
03:31tensions arose as McCain appeared to talk over her co-hosts.
03:35This led Goldberg, who was trying to cut to a commercial break, to snap at McCain.
03:40Girl, please stop talking. Please stop talking right now.
03:43Because you know what?
03:44No problem.
03:45What's happening?
03:45No problem.
03:46Thank you.
03:46The awkward exchange between the two polarized viewers,
03:50with some saying Goldberg was out of line and others insisting that it was a much-needed rebuff.
03:57Yeah, it's going to happen. And it's probably going to happen again.
04:01Just saying. Just saying.
04:03Number seven, Kelly Osbourne's poor choice of words.
04:07Donald Trump's stance on immigrants, particularly Latinos, has long been made clear.
04:12Build that wall. Build that wall. Build that wall. Build that wall.
04:18During his presidential campaign,
04:20he centered his platform on the promise to remove them from the country.
04:24While discussing this policy on The View in 2015,
04:28Kelly Osbourne attempted to make a point defending Latinos,
04:32but inadvertently made an offensive statement instead.
04:36You kick every Latino out of this country,
04:39then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?
04:42Oh, that's...
04:43In the sense that...
04:44No.
04:44You know what I mean?
04:44The remark about Latinos cleaning toilets was met with pin drop silence from the audience
04:50and gasps from her co-panelists.
04:53After receiving a huge backlash on social media,
04:57Osbourne took to Facebook to apologize for her poor choice of words.
05:01Nearly a decade later, the clip was transformed into a viral meme on TikTok,
05:06with users sharing different takes based on problematic stereotypes.
05:12And if you kick every girl with daddy issues out of this country,
05:15then who's going to watch your movies and shows?
05:17Pedro Pascal.
05:18Oh, that's not...
05:18Oscar Isaac.
05:19That's not...
05:20Cillian Murphy.
05:21There's more to all...
05:21There's not...
05:22I mean, in the sense that...
05:23Pedro's not even a dad.
05:24Number six, Elizabeth Hasselbeck's stalking comments.
05:28In 2009, a video surfaced online showing sportscaster Erin Andrews completely nude.
05:34It was later revealed that a man named Michael David Barrett
05:38had stalked Andrews and secretly filmed her in her hotel room.
05:42He allegedly rigged the peepholes in her hotel room doors and recorded her on his cell phone.
05:47When Barrett failed to sell the videos to celebrity gossip site TMZ,
05:51he posted them on the internet.
05:53For this crime, Barrett was sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
05:57Fast forward to 2010, while Andrews was competing on Dancing with the Stars,
06:02Elizabeth Hasselbeck brought up this incident,
06:05criticizing Andrews for her revealing costumes on the show.
06:09I mean, in some way, if I'm him, I'm like,
06:11man, I just could have waited 12 weeks and seen this a little bit less without the prison time.
06:17Hasselbeck's comments were widely condemned as insensitive,
06:21not only to Andrews, but also to others who had suffered similar experiences.
06:26In the following episode, Hasselbeck delivered a tearful apology
06:30after reportedly reaching out to Andrews directly to seek forgiveness.
06:35I'm really sorry, and I wanted to offer that publicly too,
06:38even though I did follow that advice. So, sorry to get emotional about it.
06:43I don't like to hurt somebody, so, sorry.
06:46Number 5. Joy Behar and Michelle Collins offend nurses
06:51At the 2016 Miss America pageant, Kelly Johnson, a contestant and registered nurse,
06:56delivered a monologue about one of her patients while wearing a nurse's uniform.
07:01Although the rest of America saw a dedicated healthcare professional,
07:05The View co-hosts Joy Behar and Michelle Collins saw a performer in a costume.
07:12Collins mocked Johnson's monologue,
07:14while Behar criticized her for wearing a doctor's stethoscope.
07:18The outrage was swift and severe.
07:21She was so insulted, and then I felt that nurses in general were absolutely insulted and demeaned.
07:28Nurses across the nation condemned the lady's statements
07:32and rallied behind the hashtag nursesunite on social media
07:36to emphasize the importance of their jobs.
07:39Several advertisers even pulled out of the show as a result.
07:43Faced with the mounting backlash, Behar and Collins apologized on air for their comments.
07:49We adore you, we respect you, clap for the nurses, really.
07:52You guys are wonderful, you're the most compassionate people,
07:55and I think, you know, I think we just have to have a moment about that.
07:58Number 4. Raven Simone defends violent cop
08:02Raven Simone served as a permanent co-host on The View for only one year,
08:07but her short tenure was marked by multiple controversies.
08:11She first faced criticism after defending a Latin TV host
08:15who was fired for likening Michelle Obama to a character from Planet of the Apes.
08:20I look like a bird.
08:22So can I be mad if somebody calls me Toucan Sam?
08:25Like, don't be rude.
08:26Yeah, I'd be mad if somebody called you Toucan Sam, come on.
08:29Months later, she stirred more controversy for excusing the actions
08:33of South Carolina police officer Ben Fields.
08:37Fields had been filmed using excessive force on a high school student
08:41for not putting her phone away during class.
08:44He has a record and he's still hired, but at the same time, get off your phone.
08:49You are in school, get off your phone.
08:51This time, viewers decided they'd had enough.
08:54They launched a Change.org petition demanding her dismissal from the show.
09:00Although the petition garnered over 120,000 signatures, the network chose to keep her.
09:06If you don't know how to do it, err on the side of not doing it.
09:11Keep that crap to yourself.
09:12Number three, Joy Behar's blackface controversy.
09:16Many celebrities have faced backlash after old photographs of them in blackface came to light,
09:22and Joy Behar was no exception.
09:25Is that you, Joy?
09:26Oh, you know, this picture.
09:28Joy, is that you, Joy?
09:29That is you?
09:31Back in 2016, during a discussion about the resurgence of curly hair,
09:36Behar displayed a 1970s picture of herself at a Halloween party
09:41wearing makeup that was noticeably darker than her skin.
09:45The picture stunned co-host Raven Simone, who jokingly suggested she could get in trouble for it.
09:51Did you have tanning lotion on, Joy?
09:52I had makeup that was a little bit darker than my skin.
09:57That trouble eventually came in 2019 when entertainment website The Wrap
10:02dug up the old segment and shared it on social media.
10:06Despite immediate public outrage,
10:08neither Behar nor the show seemed to address the controversy.
10:11Unlike many others, Behar was spared any consequences for the offensive costume.
10:17The Black community had my back.
10:20They know that that was not blackface, that was an homage.
10:24Number two, Whoopi Goldberg defends Bill Cosby.
10:27No one has convicted him.
10:30He has not been arrested.
10:32And the bottom line is, that's the law.
10:35Innocent until proven guilty.
10:37Whoopi Goldberg has a strange habit of stepping up to defend controversial celebrities.
10:43First, it was Mel Gibson, who Goldberg insisted was not racist,
10:47after a clip surfaced of him yelling a racial slur.
10:51You can say he's being a bonehead, but I can't sit and say that he's a racist
10:59having spent time with him in my house with my kids.
11:01I can't say it.
11:02Even more egregious, she staunchly defended Bill Cosby on multiple occasions,
11:08in light of the numerous sexual assault allegations against him.
11:12Goldberg initially maintained that Cosby was innocent until proven guilty.
11:18However, she later changed her stance once the evidence against him began to suggest otherwise.
11:24I gotta say, all of the information that's out there kind of points to guilt.
11:30Remarkably, Goldberg wasn't the only co-host on The View
11:33to support a celebrity accused of sexual assault.
11:37In 2014, Barbara Walters also vehemently defended Woody Allen
11:42against the allegations made by his adopted daughter.
12:001. An Exposé on The View
12:04The on-screen drama on The View may be captivating,
12:08but it appears what happens behind the scenes is even more scandalous.
12:13How important was this sort of show at the time,
12:16and what happened? How did it descend into these catfights?
12:19In 2019, journalist Ramin Satuda offered a glimpse with his book Ladies Who Punch,
12:26which uncovered shocking revelations about the show and its hosts.
12:30Barbara Walters was depicted as having an explosive temper,
12:35often shouting at co-host Jenny McCarthy and criticizing her wardrobe.
12:40Barbara is getting ripped by Jenny McCarthy.
12:43When I knew, if you read the chapter, you'd see that I had much respect for her.
12:47And on the top of my show today, I said,
12:50I loved her, and you can adore someone and be terrified of them at the same time.
12:55Also, despite their infamous fight,
12:58Rosie O'Donnell admitted to having a little bit of a crush on Elizabeth Hasselbeck.
13:03The book also revealed that Gayle King was considered for the panel,
13:07but was rejected due to her close ties to Oprah Winfrey.
13:11Ladies Who Punch portrayed many hosts unfavorably,
13:14leading O'Donnell to later express regret about granting Satuda an interview.
13:20What happens for me at work is not for everybody. It's not their business.
13:25Uh-huh.
13:25You know, and I don't like talking out of school.
