00:00Pennsylvania seek recognition.
00:02Mr. Speaker, I ask unanimous consent to address the House for one minute, and do we revise and extend my request?
00:07You're recognized for one minute.
00:08Without objection.
00:09Without objection.
00:16Mr. Speaker, I rise today to applaud Surgeon General Vivek Murthy
00:21for officially calling our gun violence epidemic what it is, a public health crisis.
00:28The numbers paint the picture.
00:30120 Americans are killed, and more than 200 are wounded by guns every day.
00:36The leading cause of death among children and teens in America is gun violence.
00:414,600 precious children killed in 2022 alone.
00:46An average of two mass shootings each day for the past three years.
00:51These numbers should horrify us, because they are not numbers.
00:55People whose lives have been stolen, families with unimaginable pain.
00:59Dr. Murthy's declaration treats our gun violence crisis with the urgency it demands.
01:04It opens doors for us to build upon the small progress we are making.
01:09Two years ago this week, we passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act,
01:13the first gun violence safety law in 30 years.
01:17We did so together in the shadow of a horrific set of mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde.
01:23This will not be our last step.
01:25We must ban automatic rifles, strengthen universal background checks, and require safe storage.
01:31This is a public health crisis.
01:33Mr. Speaker, I ask us to face it.
01:36Doing so will save lives.
01:38Thank you, and I yield back.
