PBBM appoints Sen. Sonny Angara as new DepEd chief

00:23Three weeks before the resignation of Vice President Sara Duterte as Education Secretary to be fully effective on July 19,
00:29President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has appointed Senator Juan Edgardo Sonny Angara as the new DepEd chief.
00:37The President made the announcement at the 17th Cabinet meeting in Malacanang today.
00:41The President stressed the importance of DepEd in education in the country.
00:45He said, there were many good candidates for the position so it's been a challenge for him to choose.
00:51According to the Presidential Communications Office, Angara was chosen to be the next head of the DepEd because of his legislative history.
00:58In which he pushed some important educational reforms since entering the Senate in 2013,
01:04including the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education, as well as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or the K-12 program.
01:13Angara thanked the chief executive for the trust he's shown in him, and he says he accepts the job fully and with humility.
01:20He also assured his readiness to cooperate in all sectors of education,
01:24also with Vice President Sara Duterte, to ensure that all Filipino youths will have access to quality education.
01:31He said he was also happy to start the work as secretary upon the accomplishments of VP Sara.
01:36The Senator emphasized the importance of working together to respond to and overcome the challenges in education.
01:43At the same time, he pointed out his willingness to work with President Marcos, Jr.,
01:47and the administration to help the students and teachers, as well as to raise the level of education in the country.
01:53The DepEd said it will work closely with the new secretary in the continuous promotion of quality education in the country.
02:00The Philippine Business for Education believe in Angara's ability to manage the DepEd, especially in responding to the educational crisis in the country.
02:08The group also hopes Angara will use his experience and connections as politician to win the support of students and teachers.
02:15The ACT Teachers Party list challenged the new secretary to act immediately and address the education crisis.
02:21He is also urged to review the K-12 program and overhaul the entire system because many problems have been found since it was implemented.
02:29The Teachers Dignity Coalition hopes the new DepEd chief will be open-minded and focus on the concerns of teachers.
02:36He is aware of the situation of his students and teachers down there.

02:49House Speaker Martin Romualdez is confident Angara will be up to the task in performing his duties,
02:54given his extensive experience, dedication, and good track record as a lawmaker.
02:59While House Committee on Basic Education and Culture Chair Roman Romualdez laid out what he thinks Angara should focus on to raise the level of education in the country.
