For the first time seemingly ever, a star free agent has chosen the Mavericks as his next team. With Klay Thompson set to make this team even better next year, could Dallas emerge as a spot that star free agents want to come to? 00:00So, we went through the years of the best we could do was Harrison Barnes, Monte Ellis,
00:21Chandler Parsons.
00:22I remember Chandler Parsons felt like it could be big for us, but then don't you have to
00:26go back to like Sean Marion for players that you felt good about that wanted to come to
00:31Dallas before this?
00:32Do you think this could be the start of maybe more people want to come to Dallas or do you
00:37think Clay is a unique situation?
00:40Absolutely.
00:41Now, can you get those things done?
00:43Can you, if somebody says I want to come to Dallas, I do think in January there's going
00:50to be players that are unhappy with their situation that are going to hope and wish
00:55and I don't know how public they'll make it, but say, I want to come to Dallas because
01:02of this situation.
01:03I think that they see, especially if you're a shooter, no team in the NBA gets more wide
01:08open looks in the NBA.
01:10You can rag on whether it's Gilbert Arenas, who I was listening to, whoever it is, you
01:13can listen to all these people rag on Luka and say he's not a great basketball player
01:17or this and that, but nobody creates more wide open shots in the NBA than Luka Doncic.
01:24Do you want Tim McMahon to either support or destroy your argument?
01:28Both.
01:29Okay.
01:30Well, I respect him a lot.
01:32Let's see what happens.
01:33Tim McMahon was on with Sean and RJ this morning.
01:35Is Dallas a destination city?
01:39Well, listen, you can debate is he a star still, all those sort of things, but the simple
01:45fact of the matter is it was Mavericks versus Lakers for a big name free agent and the most
01:51glamorous franchise in the NBA had more years at a higher salary on the table.
01:59Now the Lakers are going to have to jump through hoops to make that happen, but they were talking
02:02about a four year, $80 million deal with clay.
02:05The Maddox had three for 50.
02:07He chose to come to Dallas.
02:09You know, that's the idea that Dallas is just some no way destination for free agents.
02:17Yes.
02:18That's off the table.
02:19So, you know, how many times are the Mavericks going to be able to be in this, this sort
02:24of a situation moving forward?
02:26We'll see.
02:27Obviously Luke is going to be on a super max for a while.
02:30I'm going to pause it right there because he does, he does get into the logistics of
02:33future salary cap, which is fine, but maybe not as relevant to this conversation.
02:40But yes, that was kind of a, kind of a give and take.
02:43He's not saying it's the destination, but he is like, you can't say that people don't
02:46want to come here.
02:47I mean, if we ever beat out the Lakers for anything, that's a good point.
02:51Hell, we even lost.
02:52Didn't we just lose dimwitty?
02:54Yeah.
02:55Like that was a few months ago.
02:56We beat them out for Kai.
02:59Somewhat true.
03:00Yeah.
03:01So that's it.
03:02That's two now.
03:03Nico beat, Nico beat the trade that LA had on the table and then Kyrie could have chosen
03:09LA.
03:10They would have been a lot that they would have to do just kind of like what he's saying.
03:12But Kyrie, I don't, I have to go back and read everything.
03:18Cause I felt at one point he did want LA, but then it felt like, you know, I'm going
03:21to choose Dallas.
03:22I really think that this is a situation that I've liked, even though we didn't win.
03:25I liked this situation in the end.
03:27I like Jason kid.
03:29I like Luca Donchic.
03:31And I think that one thing to remember is Dallas was positioned to pay him the most
03:35and give him the best contract, right?
03:37This is, this is why the clay Thompson thing is significant because Los Angeles was willing
03:42to give him an extra year at a higher average annual value compared to that situation with
03:46Kyrie, where he had already gotten a feel.
03:48You did a little recruiting from within, but then also you had the better option for him
03:52when you just talk about the raw numbers.
03:54This one is flipped and you still ended up with, uh, with, uh, clay.
03:57And I think that's why the question is worth asking.
