00:00center. It's about 11 15 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, July 1st, coming on with
00:05catastrophic hurricane barrel moving through portions of the Grenadines this
00:09morning. We've just gotten some data from the Air Force Reserve Hurricane
00:12under aircraft that suggests a barrel has continued to intensify this morning.
00:16Maximum sustained winds are up now into near 150 MPH. Right now, the eye of
00:21barrel is right over Carriacou Island just to the north of Grenada, and it's
00:26moving off to the west northwest at 20 MPH. And you can see the very well
00:29defined eye in both visible and infrared satellite imagery. Barrel has
00:33restrengthened this morning as it's gone through an eyewall replacement
00:36cycle. So now is when we're experiencing those catastrophic category
00:40four wind conditions in portions of the Grenadines. Places like Union Island,
00:44Palm Island, Petit Martinique, Petit Saint Vincent, Carriacou. Those are the
00:48areas that are most threatened now, with both those devastating category four
00:52winds as well as the storm surge of 6 to 9 ft above normal tide levels,
00:56especially near and to the north, even up towards Saint Vincent, where we can
00:59see, you know, life threatening storm surge and inundation, especially of
01:03some of those smaller islands in the Grenadines between Saint Vincent and
01:06Grenada. So very serious situation for anyone who is watching in those areas.
01:10If you are in the eye, do not go out in the eye. It's not safe. The storm is
01:14moving very quickly in the backside of the eye wall will move in on over you
01:18very, very fast, and you do not want to be outside in those conditions. We do
01:23have a hurricane warning in effect still for Barbados for Saint Vincent and
01:27the Grenadines, Grenada down to Tobago. Tropical storm warnings in effect for
01:30Saint Lucia and Martinique. But again, if you look at the wind field, those areas
01:35in the Grenadines between Saint Vincent and Grenada are squarely within the
01:38hurricane force wind field near the eye and the in the eye wall of barrel this
01:42morning. So very dangerous situation will continue for the next several hours
01:46until barrel pulls away from the islands later this afternoon and this evening.
01:50Um, zooming out a little bit. Let's look at what barrel is going to do over the
01:54next several days. These are the chances of hurricane force winds were most
01:58concerned about downstream about seeing hurricane force winds in Jamaica, and a
02:02hurricane watch has been issued for that island. As of this morning, there is a
02:06potential for barrel to remain a hurricane, a powerful hurricane across
02:09the Caribbean Sea. There is also a chance of hurricane force winds
02:12extending as far westward as two portions of the Yucatan Peninsula later
02:16this week. The arrival time of those tropical storm force winds as we look
02:19through the week in Jamaica would be a early Wednesday morning and then
02:23stretching into places like Cayman Islands Wednesday evening, Western Cubo
02:27Thursday morning if they were to reach there and then the Yucatan Peninsula by
02:31Thursday evening along the coast of Belize up to the Yucatan Peninsula of
02:35Mexico. Eso looking back, stepping out and looking at the track forecast, we
02:40are expecting barrel to move steadily west north westward across the Caribbean
02:44Sea through the week, passing south of Hispaniola tomorrow evening near or
02:50over Jamaica during the day on Wednesday and then approaching the
02:53Yucatan Peninsula as we go from Thursday into Friday and then emerging
02:56over the southern Gulf of Mexico by early Saturday morning. So many areas
03:00will be a threat from barrel as we go through the week. Once the system pulls
03:04away from the Windward Islands, we also have a tropical storm watch in effect
03:08for southern portions of Haiti and the Dominican Republic for the possibility
03:11of tropical storm force winds there as we go through the day on Tuesday. I
03:15don't want to underestimate the rainfall threat we could. We are currently seeing
03:18very heavy rainfall with the core of barrel as it moves through the
03:21Grenadines, the Windward Islands. We could see isolated amounts as high as
03:2410 inches in some of those areas, widespread rainfall totals of 3 to 6
03:29inches across Barbados and the remainder of the Windward Islands. The
03:33heavy rainfall potential will occur up in portions of Hispaniola in particular
03:38as barrels moisture interacts with the mountains there, the potential for heavy
03:41rain as we get into Jamaica and the Cayman Islands later in the week. But
03:45just to recap right now, barrel is a catastrophic hurricane, category
03:50four hurricane with very strong winds, life threatening storm surge moving
03:53through the southern Windward Islands, the Grenadines right now and folks in
03:57those areas should be hunkered down for the next few hours until the core of
04:01barrel moves away. We are seeing reports already of widespread power outages,
04:06damage, wind damage occurring in some of the Windward Islands now. Again, heavy
04:12rainfall, flash flooding are also possible in these areas and downstream
04:16later this week we could again see impacts in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands,
04:21the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize and elsewhere in the northwestern Caribbean.
04:25We'll want to keep an eye on barrel, check back for additional updates from
04:28us here at the Hurricane Center. You can always get the latest information at
04:32hurricanes.gov. If you're in the Windward Islands, please stay safe
04:35today. Tune in later. We'll have more updates. Thank you for watching. I'm Mike
04:38Brennan at the National Hurricane Center.
