00:00Here's one thing these women have in common, they're hard-working entrepreneurs who are
00:06skilled at serving up delicious Indian food and drinks.
00:10To support their families, these women have found their footing at food garage in Titidiyai
00:16Grove, Kajang, thanks to Kogila Raji Kandasamy.
00:19Raji, who heads the Kajang branch of the non-profit Malaysian Indian Youth Council, has been working
00:26on this initiative for the past two years.
00:29We set up this program called Programme Ke Usavanan Vanitha.
00:36So under Programme Ke Usavanan, we start to come up with all the stalls, vendors, find
00:43for small business owners, that's how it begins.
00:47During FMT Lifestyle's visit, the first to arrive at 7pm was Kalevani Ramakrishna.
00:56Kalevani, whose husband is a lorry driver, began putting together flower bouquets from
01:01home for extra money.
01:03However, needing a steady income to support her family, she ventured into selling pani
01:08puri, her son's favourite treat.
01:11Today at Food Garage, Kalevani's best-seller is her spicy, home-cooked sattisoran.
01:18The mutton version is quite the flavour bomb.
01:21She also serves puri, and several varieties of her popular pani puri.
01:27Each entrepreneur here hails from Kajang and comes from a humble background.
01:32And she is Malar, she is a housewife, she babysits at home, she does the day-time, and
01:39when her kids finish school, she will come back.
01:42She is the one who sets up the shop, A to Z.
01:46The first stall in the row is run by Parimala Devi Arumugam, fondly known as Malar, who
01:58offers a variety of hot and cold drinks.
02:01These include masala chai made with fresh cow's milk, and goli soda, a popular fizzy
02:07drink from India.
02:08And then the third stall, she is also in the day-time, school transportation, tuition centres,
02:17catering, she does all that, and comes back at night.
02:22She runs the stall as a family.
02:24Her son comes back after school to help his mother.
02:27So serving, cleaning, everything is done by her son.
02:30He is only 15 years old.
02:33Running Tina's Kitchen, Ruth Benedict offers unique pandan gula melaka appam served with
02:42warm coconut milk.
02:44She also excels at paneer pav bhaji, a tangy and zesty street food from northern India.
02:53Now in operation for five months, Raji says Food Garage has been a success, with newer
02:59members such as Vani's Kitchen having recently joined.
03:03Being the organiser of this place, I am really grateful, really grateful that we can come
03:10this far.
03:12So the next time you're in Kajang, be sure to swing by, grab some delicious sights, and
03:17bring a smile to these ladies' faces.
03:20Divya Ragu, FMT Lifestyle.
