00:00OK, fabulous.
00:01So I wanted to start by asking you both some questions.
00:05Silent films are largely a thing of the past,
00:07and most contemporary films are very heavy on dialogue.
00:11But A Quiet Place franchise reminds us
00:15that an image or moving images holds 1,000 words.
00:19So what I'm really curious about is, as actors,
00:22what was this experience like for you,
00:24and if it was more difficult now to have to convey a message
00:29because you can't rely on dialogue as much?
00:33I would say that when acting, you
00:38are using more than just what's on the page
00:41to get the message across.
00:42I think one of our jobs is to read between the lines
00:48and to find the subtext in a script.
00:52And so this was a refreshing sort of challenge
00:57because we didn't even have dialogue to read between.
01:01And so it kind of strips away the easier way
01:05that we communicate and reveals the underbelly
01:09of how we communicate, which is really primal.
01:15We use our bodies.
01:16We use our facial expressions.
01:18And in them is couched so much more meaning
01:22than words can offer.
01:24So it was a challenge because you
01:26can't prepare in advance and come and do
01:28the one performance you thought was right for the scene.
01:33You have to be really present with your scene
01:35partner in every take to ensure that you're
01:38responding to the nuances of what they're presenting.
01:41And I really enjoyed that challenge.
01:46OK.
01:46And this was obviously a very mentally and physically
01:51tasking film to do, I imagine.
01:54It's horror, it's thriller, it's action.
01:56How did you prepare yourselves psychologically
01:59and physically for such a role, such a film?
02:03I think, well, personally speaking,
02:05it seemed very clear from the script
02:07that it would be very reliant on what happened on the day
02:11because this dynamic, these two strangers that
02:15collide in the film, so much of what
02:18they're trying to communicate to each other
02:19is unsaid, as you mentioned.
02:22And you had to kind of just allow that to happen on the day
02:26and to surrender to it.
02:29It was made all the easier to do that
02:31because we had a wonderful leader in Michael, who
02:34led us with a lot of bravery and kindness
02:38and made it a very safe space for us to try and, I mean,
02:42make a lot of mistakes.
02:44But then through doing that, you can
02:46come close to something that felt truthful,
02:48yet also honouring the stakes of the film, which are very high.
02:53It was a very specific and strange exercise,
02:57but very rewarding, ultimately.
03:01That's amazing.
03:01And last question, I'm curious as to what takeaway
03:04you want the audience to have after viewing the film.
03:08I mean, I think, you know, with any film,
03:13but with a film like this, we don't
03:15want to be prescriptive, you know?
03:17We've done the work.
03:19We care very deeply about it.
03:21And we're proud of what we've done.
03:23And now it's time for the audience to take over
03:27and, you know, and to take from it what they will.
03:30I hope people enjoy themselves.
03:32I hope that they're moved.
03:34I definitely hope that they're startled
03:36and even sometimes scared.
03:39I hope that they enjoy the communal experience.
03:41I definitely hope they go to the cinemas
03:43to see it because this is a film that
03:45lends itself to that sort of communal experience,
03:48that immersion into the soundscape of this movie.
03:52I think it's unique and therefore
03:55worth seeing in the cinema.
03:58And I can't wait to hear what people think.
04:01Thank you so much for your time.
04:03And I look forward to everyone being blown away
04:06by this incredible film.
04:07Thank you.
