00:00So I slipped during one of the back tucks and I landed on my head, breaking my C2 vertebrae.
00:05Jason Derulo recalls a near-death experience.
00:09The singer shares how he broke his neck and almost died back in 2013,
00:14detailing the scary incident on the June 30th episode of Paris Hilton's I Am Paris podcast.
00:20I was getting ready for my world tour, and I was working with this trainer.
00:27And he was like, today we're going to work on endurance.
00:30So I need you to do these back tucks back to back to back.
00:33He had me doing like 50 back tucks back to back, which is another one of the worst ideas somebody's ever had.
00:40So I slipped during one of the back tucks and I landed on my head, breaking my C2 vertebrae.
00:45With Jason then describing the moment his life flashed before his eyes.
00:50Yeah, as soon as it happened, I heard a big crack and I was just like, is this it?
00:56Like, is this how it all ends? And all the thoughts that you could imagine are going through my head at the time.
01:04And when the songwriter made it to the hospital, he realized he was just lucky to be alive.
01:10Get to the hospital and the, you know, they take all these x-rays and whatnot.
01:15And then the doctor was like, well, I have some good news and some bad news.
01:19The good news is that you have a hangman's break, which is the same same break that, you know, happens when you get hung and you're still alive.
01:30You know, this could have ended up way crazier, you know, paralyzed or worse.
01:36And he said, that's the good news, that you're still here with us and you can move all your limbs.
01:40The bad news is you're going to be out for seven months.
01:43But the severe injury meant the ride and solo singer, who was 22 at the time, had to call off his future history world tour,
01:50with Jason then reflecting on the massive emotional toll canceling the tour and recovering for seven months took on him.
01:57I had this tour set up. It was the biggest tour of my life at that point and instantly heartbroken.
02:04I had to let all these people down.
02:07And I went from having all the reins in my life and being in control of my life to not having any kind of control at all,
02:14not being able to tie my shoes, not being able to take a shower myself.
02:18And that was the first time in my life where I feel like I just had no control.
02:22However, the Florida native says he put that time to good use, going on to write one of his most successful albums while his neck was healing.
02:31I created a routine for myself. I woke up in the morning, went to the gym and walked.
02:38I walked for about 45 minutes a day and then I spent hours and hours within the studio.
02:45But same time, same places every single day. And that's when I wrote my most successful album.
02:51The Talk Dirty album, which had Talk Dirty, Other Side, Marry Me, Wiggle, like all kinds of hits off that album.
02:58It's because I created a routine, so it's like a common thing in my life when I'm able to like really follow a routine, amazing things happen.
