General Election 2024: What do the new prime minister’s first few days look like?

00:00The Tories are out and Labour is in.
00:02Keir Starmer's party won the general election with a landslide victory,
00:06meaning he's booted Rishi Sunak out of Number 10 and is now the UK's Prime Minister.
00:10So what happens next?
00:12Here's what the next few days have in store for our brand new PM.
00:15So Keir's got a busy week ahead of him.
00:17Once at Number 10, he'll receive security and intelligence briefings,
00:20get the nuclear codes and will have to appoint his cabinet.
00:23And on top of all of that, he'll have a house move to think about.
00:26Over the next few days, Starmer will have to get his diary in order.
00:29He'll need to decide when the first cabinet meeting will be held
00:32and work out the timing of any major policy or legislative announcements.
00:36Next week, the new parliament will meet for the first time
00:38and a common speaker will need to be elected.
00:40Swiftly after that, the new PM will have to fly to Washington DC for the NATO Leaders Summit.
00:46Scroll forward to July 17th and the King will host the state opening of parliament.
00:50Up until this happens, no parliamentary decisions can be made.
00:54And the following day, the UK is hosting the European Political Community,
00:58where Keir will welcome 27 EU member countries
01:00and set the tone for the UK's new relationship with the EU.
01:04Safe to say, the PM's got an intense few weeks up ahead.
