00:00now we review dorks in leather but the bike riders yes the bike riders it came
00:09out in 2023 but it's in theaters in 2024 alrighty ladies and gentlemen I have
00:17seen the bike riders it is a Tom Hardy starring Jeff Nichols directed very much
00:24beloved film currently getting a 7.2 on IMDB 81% Rotten Tomatoes and a 74%
00:34approval rating on both Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes audience score so
00:38people are just eating this film up I didn't like anyone in this film so I was
00:48kind of hoping for them all to die horribly but that's just me and I mean
00:53you know the acting in this is really superb these characters are very much
01:00what I would expect bikers to be like and I mean understand something that I'm
01:07a person who typically loves history this film does not have a plot okay to
01:13be clear it is a coming-of-age story style film where there are simply a
01:18series of events happening in succession and those events tell the
01:24story in this case it is the story of a person who leaves bike riding is a bike
01:31rider is a in a bike gang or whatever have you it's you know it's like what
01:38happens is this chick goes into a bar which she shouldn't go into because she
01:42has a boyfriend who she's living with kind of runs into this guy who she I
01:48don't know if she intended to cheat on her boyfriend with that dude but she
01:52clearly wasn't happy with the boyfriend winds up the boyfriend leaves and this
01:57clears the way for biker dude to be in her life even though she got like
02:03totally groped the heck out of by his biker friends and I mean look I know
02:10that this is back in like the 60s and maybe we had a different idea but you
02:16know if you have friends that grope your woman they should not be your friends
02:24anymore so I hated the main character he was a hothead and a d-bag and you know
02:32one of the thing he things he talks about in this particular film which is
02:35true history is that he described his brother as a pinko and told him that he
02:44beat the hell out of them if he if he stayed in college so his brother dropped
02:50out of college out of fear of being killed by his brother which I mean
02:54definitely does not establish this man as a good guy but what is a pinko well a
03:01pinko is what we would refer to now as a rhino Republican in name only because
03:10pink is a lesser shade of red so being a pinko means that you're you're
03:18Republican leaning but you're a centrist so in this movie's perspective or in
03:24this character's perspective if you are a man of intelligence who works with his
03:30mind you cannot be a true Republican this makes a certain degree of sense I
03:40have to admit watching the news I get that right and this is an aspect of the
03:45film you know but you you learn to hate this man more and that's that's where I
03:52mean it's like there's a lot of things I learned from like the term chopper in
03:57terms of a bike I'm assuming that this comes from the fact that people use
04:01chopped up parts people customize the parts for their bikes so when you call a
04:07bike a chopper technically speaking an assembly line bicycle is not a chopper a
04:13chopper is a bike with custom parts or majority custom parts or very customized
04:21just buying a bike off the assembly line is not a chopper that is would
04:27still be considered a hog if it's a Harley Davidson but of course there was
04:33a time in American history where in order to keep one Harley Davidson
04:36running you had to have another Harley Davidson because the parts were crap and
04:42you know this this was a thing so custom parts were generally the only parts that
04:48would survive this is don't recall this from the movie but this is something I
04:53watched documentary about the thing about this movie is that they do say
04:59that there was a transition to drug running and I had always assumed that
05:05being in a motorcycle gang and they say they're in a club but no you're not in a
05:12club if you do things like burn down people's bars you're in a gang that's
05:17kind of how gangs work and gangs engage in racketeering like drug running you
05:23know protection racket things like that so I mean understand something that
05:30being a guy who enjoys a bicycle rides you know you can be in a motorcycle club
05:35a motorcycle club is not a gang a motorcycle club is a place for people
05:40who enjoy motorcycles they typically don't get violent there's a difference
05:46when you have a motorcycle gang what they do is they run drugs that was my
05:53understanding and they do get violent so so this is this is the thing that it
05:58depicts you try to try to humanize these characters but you know this was a very
06:07rough-and-tumble lifestyle at the time I don't know what it's like now but it's
06:10like when I mean I worked in Los Angeles with the homeless and I dealt with gang
06:15bangers you know I dealt with people who were in gangs and they associated
06:21with gangs and you know it's like look what they do what most of them did was
06:26sell drugs same thing with the whole thing about the motorcycle is that you
06:33have a vehicle that moves very fast could carry very little cargo and it's
06:40perfect for drug running because it's a high-yield cargo and my father actually
06:46used to tell me as a child you know that he had a friend who tried to join the
06:49Hells Angels the initiation at the time don't know what it is now was to pass
06:54under a semi truck on your bike and come up on the other end okay this was of
06:59course because if you did this generally a police officer is not going to follow
07:03you it's not worth risking his life that said the subject matter was
07:10uninteresting to me it was very well acted it was very well done the shots in
07:16this film look like they were right out of period down to the type of colors
07:22that you saw the quality of the footage I mean at any given point it honestly
07:30looked as though this was genuine footage I mean you could tell it wasn't
07:37but it looked very genuine the the car owned by the main chicks original
07:43boyfriend looked like a restoration model okay I have to admit that it did
07:48not look like it was a new vehicle I'm not familiar with that color being what
07:53you would find on vehicles of the time it looked like it was a custom unit that
07:58had been repainted and was not a very good restoration job but I digress that's
08:05not important so yeah look I'm gonna be completely honest with you this movie
08:11did not appeal to me because I didn't like the characters all right it's a
08:16coming-of-age story and I didn't want these people to age I wanted them to
08:23drop dead that's kind of me I don't don't like people that don't respect
08:28other people's personal space I found the characters very hard to like and
08:33enjoy but I do have to admit it is an excellent performance it is very well
08:39done as a piece of art it ticks all the right boxes it belongs high on your
08:43watch list do of course go in there and understand that you're gonna see things
08:49that may not appeal to you and I mean if you don't want to see a story about a
08:56guy who lets his friends get all handsy with his girlfriend and you know is
09:02still friends with them then this isn't the story for you otherwise if you want
09:07a well-crafted narrative with a very vintage feel to it that is exquisitely
09:12acted this is your film anyway that's just my opinion I'd love to hear yours
