Popmart's art toy Labubu turns into tattoos of fortune for Thai fans

In Thailand, it is not uncommon for people to get traditional tattoos of sacred scriptures known as Sak Yant, which are believed to offer blessings, protection from harm, and bring good luck.

But some of these tattoos, which generally use ancient geometric designs mixed with Buddhist prayers, are being modified - with a mischievous grinning furry monster in the middle.

This creature is called “Labubu”, named by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung who created it. He collaborated with Chinese company Popmart in producing collectible figurines and plush dolls of Labubu that were sold in blind boxes. In Thailand, their popularity rose, and price per piece tripled, after singer Lisa from K-pop group Blackpink was seen with one such box.
