00:00What's going on everybody, this is Alan Hopper TV coming to you from Panajachel, right here
00:28on Lake Atitlan.
00:31We are going to explore this lake here, we're going to explore the town, and some of these
00:35other towns.
00:36Let's do it.
00:37Alright, the five towns we're going to check out, Santa Catarina, Panajachel, San Juan,
00:44Santiago, and San Antonio.
00:49We arrived from Antigua on this very windy road that took about two and a half to three
00:55hours depending on traffic.
00:57Now I will say that motion sickness is possible when you're on these windy roads, so maybe
01:04prepare for that when you're on your way to Lake Atitlan.
01:09Now the primary beach town is Panajachel, which is where we're at right now.
01:14This is where the most infrastructure is, and most people who are foreigners start here
01:21they really venture out and end up in these other communities.
01:28Alright, so we're going to get on this boat right here and head over to San Juan.
01:47Safety first, friends.
01:48Yeah, they have roads that go around the lake, but really the best way to get around is on
01:53these boats.
02:07Alright, so first stop is San Juan a la Guna, and we've got a guide, she's going to show
02:12us around some of the places in this town.
02:18So the first part of this tour, she's going to show us the textiles and how they're made
02:46and where they come from.
02:49The process here is completely natural, including the dyes as well as the fabric used.
02:56So this is locally sourced cotton fabric.
03:01Alright, so I'm going to be getting this right here for 200 quetzales.
03:08It's a full cotton, feels real comfortable, relaxed, and it's Guatemalan style.
03:14I like it.
03:15¿Cuántos quetzales?
03:16¿Veinte?
03:17No, cincuenta.
03:18¿Cincuenta?
03:19Sí.
03:25Getting this leather Guatemalan bracelet.
03:29Hi friend, welcome.
03:42Yeah, so I'm looking at these three pieces of art, quetzales.
03:48¿Doscientos?
03:49¿Doscientos?
03:50Yes.
03:51¿Sí?
03:52Yes.
03:53¿Pasible?
03:54¿Qué más?
03:55¿Sí?
03:56¿Sí?
03:57¿Sí?
03:59Alright, now we're going to go in here and take a look at how chocolate's made.
04:03Chocolate.
04:04Let's do it.
04:15She said if we eat 12 of these cacao seeds, it's equivalent to taking a full tequila shot.
04:21It's got alcohol in it, these cacao seeds.
04:24It's kind of bitter, but it's got alcohol in it.
04:29So it's been roasted now, let's see if it tastes different.
04:32Tastes more like chocolate than you would know.
04:34Yeah.
04:38So I've got a little bit of pure cacao.
04:41She did warn me that it's going to be bitter.
04:44Tastes a bit nutty.
04:46It's kind of like a nut.
04:48And it is bitter.
04:5390% is decent.
04:55This is my favorite, 80%.
04:5780% cacao and 20% sugar.
05:04So this is actually chocolate rum.
05:12Alright, so the next thing we're going to check out is local honey.
05:27Oh, that's so good.
05:31Cerveza with honey.
05:34I like the cider.
05:35And the last part of the tour is coffee, so we're going to be checking out how they make coffee.
05:50Try some coffee beans.
05:54Guatemalan coffee, very famous.
05:57Wow, what a cool town, San Juan de Lago.
06:03Hi!
06:04When you come to San Juan, you can meet with Giselle here, she's a fantastic guide.
06:08She shows you everything you need to know about the town and the merchants and the commercial side of the industry that goes on right here.
06:27So we've gone from Panachel all the way over here to San Juan right here.
06:34This is San Pedro.
06:37You know, if you're going to ride the boats, I would say early morning is not as choppy as the afternoon.
06:41And when it gets choppy, it can really be quite the ride.
06:46Alright, we came back to Panachel and now we're going to go get some food and then show you what that looks like.
06:52We're also going to go to more towns, so you're going to stay tuned.
06:55We're going to try and get around lots of different parts of Lake Atitlan.
06:58You saw San Pedro, unfortunately it was just from the boat, we didn't actually go on the shore.
07:03There's so many towns around here, Santa Catalina, I mean the list goes on.
07:06Hopefully we show you as many as we can in this guide, so let's keep this tour going.
07:25And you can see the volcanoes towering over the lake.
07:29This is actually a freshwater lake.
07:32It's not saltwater, it's quite far away from the Pacific and the Caribbean.
07:37So it is very deep.
07:40Now one question people want to know is can you fish or swim here?
07:44It's not typical.
07:48And this is San Pedro.
07:52It's not typical.
07:55And this is a look at the hotel we stayed at in Panachel.
08:02So as the sun went down, another day began and we woke up with an urge to do some more exploring.
08:08This morning we're actually going to walk around more of Panachel.
08:11And then we're actually going to go over to San Antonio, Santa Catalina, and Santiago.
08:16But let's first show you around Calle Santander right here.
08:19Alright so this morning we're actually going to walk around more of Panachel.
08:23And then we're actually going to go over to San Antonio, Santa Catalina, and Santiago.
08:28But let's first show you around Calle Santander right here.
08:49It's really early here in Pana, as they call it, P-A-N-A.
09:19They also call it Panachel.
09:21But anyway, it's still early. It's only 9.30.
09:29Here we are right here on the waterfront.
09:31We're going to walk down this cool little market alleyway right here.
09:49And we met up with a local tour guide who ended up taking us on a tour of the city.
09:54And we met up with a local tour guide who ended up taking us on a tour of the city.

10:11And we met up with a local tour guide who end up giving us an awesome deal
10:14And we met up with a local tour guide who ended up giving us an awesome deal
10:18For multiple towns.
10:20For multiple towns.
10:23Like I said, we're going to three more today.
10:25We're going to go all the way across to Santiago, which is on the other side of the lake.
10:27We're going to go all the way across to Santiago, which is on the other side of the lake.
10:29It's about 9.30, so we've got a big day ahead of us.
10:31big day ahead of us so we just stopped right here in the middle of the lake to get great views being
10:43that it's a clear day most of the time in the mornings it's clear in the afternoons it starts
10:47to get a little bit smokier cloudy and colder so if you are going to do these taxis or these tours
10:52do them in the morning time probably before one or two anyways we're headed over to santiago now
10:58and just in case you're wondering how deep this lake is it's a thousand feet deep at its deepest
11:02point and if you want to fish here there's no real fish endemic or even introduced so the lake
11:08doesn't really have great fishing and swimming most people don't swim here either
11:29here we are at santiago we're gonna go get out of this uh barco take this uh life vest off and
11:36go walk around so what we're doing here is we're uh we're buying these pens uh we're gonna get one
11:41island hopper tv pen i go how long will it take you three two minutes and a half two and a half
11:47yeah that's fast yeah we can wait for it
12:09so if you look behind me you can see there's a park that used to be here now it's underwater
12:13the lake came up but actually now it's going down so you'll notice around lake atlan they have
12:19the villages really high up there and some of the mountains that's because when the water levels went
12:23up they retreated higher up
12:43so
13:14thank you
13:24as we walk up this road here in santiago atlan you can see lots of tuk-tuks where's the cars
13:31well preferred means of transportation around here is a tuk-tuk for those of you who don't
13:35know tuk-tuks actually originated in asia but they're so efficient they spread around the world
13:42even here to guatemala so we're gonna go check out a mayan sauna let's go see what this is
14:02and you can see the real corn here when i say real corn this is
14:05how corn actually looks it's not typically yellow it's purple red these variety of different colors
14:20actually what she's doing here is she's showing you guys traditional
14:24headdress for the mayan women and it does depend
14:28on the village because they do it different in various villages across atilan
14:58so here we are at the mercado de santiago this is the santiago market we're going to go take a
15:05look this is really a mayan market not really tourist at all so you're going to see an authentic
15:10mayan market right here
15:28um
15:58foreign
16:29so when it comes to getting around the area of atitlan you might be enticed to drive but
16:34according to our friend here isaac who's actually a local guy he was saying it's best to take the
16:39boats because if you look at this here island or this uh lake demographic here from san pedro
16:47to santiago he's saying that road around the volcano there is actually considered dangerous
16:51because there is gangsters in this little area right here and sometimes they get bad luck because
16:56tourists will come here and try and take an uber from say antigua all the way to san pedro
17:03that's not what you should do you need to go to pana de chel and take a boat to wherever you
17:08want to go that's what he recommends driving around the lake not such a good idea
17:27so this church here was built in 1547 it's called the church of iglesia
17:34in santiago atitlan let's go take a look inside
17:57good appetite so if you guys are looking for a guide when you come to atitlan this is isaac
18:02right here and he can show you around really good tours they are done in a very unique way
18:09more authentic um the best way how to know my country guatemala all right so now we're going
18:14to go look at a statue of the mayan deity and then we're going to get some lunch which i know
18:20i personally am looking forward to as well as probably you out there in the audience
18:50and this here is a look at the festival where they're celebrating the deity and they have a
18:58statue here alongside them while they're feasting on some really good local cuisine i was a little
19:06bit jealous because i wanted some food but anyway we will be heading over to get our own food at
19:12a really nice restaurant
19:35got some hibiscus juice
20:12so
20:17all right here's the deal i'm not going to sugarcoat it we got in the boat headed across
20:21the lake and this time the water was a bit choppier we couldn't even film i mean it was
20:26some really choppy water on this day here because of the wind but after 30 minutes of getting
20:34pounded by the rough seas we arrived in san antonio
20:42all right so we just came from santiago the ride was definitely a bit rough because the wind was
20:46going in the direction that we were the opposite direction in which we were coming from but we're
20:50at san antonio palopo beautiful views of the lake atitlan from here look at this
21:05you know lake atitlan really is a special place and if you do come to guatemala this might just
21:10be at the top of your list but each village has its own identity its own character its own colors
21:17and really its own unique beauty all around this whole lake really a special place on planet earth
21:31these are firecrackers good sound they're really really loud so we got some fireworks here because
21:37apparently they're legal in guatemala and everyone likes them so 2k sales which is like 25 cents
21:46okay so this one is rainbow it's the best is the original is the favorite for guatemalans okay
21:53so here we are at the potter's house we're going to see how they make mayan pottery
22:24it's called a favorite day brush they use hair of folks dogs uh coyote so a lot of this pottery
22:33or porcelain as i would call it actually ends up getting sold all across the world including in
22:38the united states so don't be surprised if you see some of this pottery in a local store nearby
22:44in the united states
22:58better somewhere else
23:14so here we are at the church of san antonio the other one had a view of the volcano but
23:26come over here and you can see they've got a view of the lake look at that view
23:44so
24:14so
24:34all right we've arrived to santa catarina they've got a fiesta going
24:36on in there this is going to be real interesting to see so let's go check it out
24:44so
25:07that was some interesting clothing they were wearing some costumes actually it was really
25:12cool and the music they were playing was nice so what we're going to do now is we're actually
25:17going to walk around the town they call this the Cinque Terre of Guatemala for those of you
25:23don't know where Cinque Terre is that's in Italy
