Let's play Torin's Passage Escarpa, the world built on the sides of steep, precarious cliff.
Episode four of my let's play video series looking at 1995 videogames and continuing my journey playing through Torin's Passage, a point and click adventure game released on PC. This week we further explore Escarpa after having just met the Bitternuts family.
Question of the Day:
How many hours did you spend trying to figure out the end of level puzzle? I took hours!

Torin's Passage is a game created by Al Lowe who also designed other popular titles such as Leisure Suit Larry and was also involved with the King's Quest game series.
I've always loved playing Torin's Passage since it was first relased and it has a special place in my videogame collection as being one of the first games that got me into gaming in the first place. It's probably one of the first games I played bought on CD by my Dad alongside other classics such as Digby the Dog, Broken Sword and the King's Quest.
The game player interacts with Torin and uses a point and click interface. You can place your mouse cursor over certain hot spots in the environment which enable Torin to move around, investigate objects and pick up items. The game also features an inventory system which can be used to access and view the items.
Within the game you can also switch to your companion, Boogle as well although his primary purpose is to morph into various items. Any item collected can be viewed as a 3D model within the item viewer screen. Boogle is Torin's purple cat-like creature who can shape change.

00:00Hello and welcome back to one of my favourite games of all time called Torrens Passage.
00:05We're back in East Garpa having just visited the Bitternuts.
00:10Sorry I'm laughing because of one line of dialogue that's made me laugh.
00:17So yeah we're going down as far as we can go to see what we can find.
00:30What's in here? It's like a sort of cave.
00:42It feels like we're in the jaws of a monster or something.
00:46And it looks like there's another one of those tiles.
01:00Eww.
01:09What's in there?
01:12Let's have a look at Boogal's inventory.
01:15Let's turn Boogal into a worm.
01:18Because he can crawl into that dark, small space.
01:31Ow, that hurt. What a shame.
01:35Boogal's always getting injured in this game.
01:38Okay, we can use the scroll feature to see what else is in the space.
01:48Turn Boogal into a lantern.
01:51Aha.
01:56Wow Boogal, it looks brown and soft and smells terrible.
02:01We've just gotta have some of that.
02:03Eww.
02:09Uh, say Boogal, would you mind being a shovel?
02:13Doesn't look very nice that at all.
02:18I say, be a shovel.
02:19Oh, Boogal's not happy about that.
02:22Oh, his light's gone off.
02:28Oh, poor Boogal.
02:37We'll get Boogal to come back out as a worm again to get through that small door.
02:41Yay, there he goes. Good job.
02:47Well done, Boogal.
02:51I don't know what Torrin's going to do with that. Keep it in his bag.
02:54It's going to smell.
02:58Oh, it's dragon poo. Okay.
03:00I don't know what we're going to do with dragon poo.
03:03But we've got it.
03:15Right, let's go looking down here.
03:18See what else we can find.
03:20Oh, what's that? Some sort of bird.
03:24Looks kind of like a... ooh, a vulture.
03:51I don't know what that means.
03:54I don't know what that means.
03:57I don't know what that means.
04:00I don't know what that means.
04:03I don't know what that means.
04:06I don't know what that means.
04:09I don't know what that means.
04:12I don't know what that means.
04:15I don't know what that means.
04:18I don't know what that means.
04:21I don't know what that means.
04:24I don't know what that means.
04:27I don't know what that means.
04:30I don't know what that means.
04:33I don't know what that means.
04:36I don't know what that means.
04:39I don't know what that means.
04:42I don't know what that means.
04:45I don't know what that means.
04:48I don't know what that means.
04:51I don't know what that means.
04:54I don't know what that means.
04:57I don't know what that means.
05:00I don't know what that means.
05:03I don't know what that means.
05:06I don't know what that means.
05:09I don't know what that means.
05:12I don't know what that means.
05:15I don't know what that means.
05:18I don't know what that means.
05:21I don't know what that means.
05:24I don't know what that means.
05:27I don't know what that means.
05:30I don't know what that means.
05:33I don't know what that means.
05:36I don't know what that means.
05:40Well that's really annoying, they're not going to let me through.
05:43So we're going to have to look for another way of getting past them.
05:46So we're going to have to look for another way of getting past them.
05:49Now I wonder...
05:52Now I wonder...
05:55Let's try throwing some live meat at them.
05:58That might work.
06:01Let's try this.
06:10Hey Viscera, look at that.
06:13Fresh dead meat, flying.
06:16Hey Viscera, look at that.
06:19Fresh dead meat, flying.
06:22Let's go after it.
06:25As always, I'm with you.
06:28As always, I'm with you.
06:31Can't you hurry up a little?
06:34It's getting away from us.
06:37Once in your life, can't you just stop and smell the rotting meat?
06:41Aha!
06:42It worked!
06:43It did work.
06:44They fell for it.
06:45They fell for the meat.
06:46Oh, what's that tree down there?
06:53Ah.
06:57Okay, let's go and investigate.
07:07So now that we've managed to get the vultures out of the way, we should hopefully be able
07:12to go up this path here.
07:13Here we go.
07:15Now, where have we gone?
07:19Where are we going now?
07:20Um.
07:21Alright, okay.
07:22You come out there.
07:23Oh, he's not going to jump.
07:26He's not going to make that.
07:28Surely not.
07:29That's a huge jump.
07:31I think we can make it, Boog.
07:38He's done it.
07:39Well done.
07:40Where's Boogal?
07:41Oh, Boogal's in the bag, isn't he?
07:42Oh, thank goodness for that.
07:43Okay, let's go in this cave.
07:46Boogal?
07:47Is that you?
07:49No, wait.
07:53I think it's coming from up ahead.
07:55Uh-oh, Boog.
07:57Skunks ahead.
07:59Uh-oh.
08:00Hey, skunks.
08:04Are you there?
08:05I'm here.
08:06Are you, Max?
08:07I'm here too, Sam.
08:08And why do you ask?
08:09Oh, well, I was just wondering.
08:16Could I pass through your cave?
08:18Well, you could try.
08:21Yeah, come on.
08:23It's been a while since our last target practice.
08:26Yeah, there's a chance we'd miss.
08:31Please, fellas, let me pass.
08:35I'm a stranger in a strange land.
08:39You got that right.
08:40What do you think, Sam?
08:41Oh, I don't know.
08:42Why don't we put it up for a vote, Max?
08:43Good idea, Sam.
08:44Okay.
08:45All those in favor of letting just any yahoo go wandering through our domicile, disrupting
08:55our comfortable lifestyle, and tracking in their horrible human odor, say aye.
09:02Yeah.
09:03And all those in favor of raising tail and letting the juices flow where they may, say
09:08nay.
09:09Aye.
09:10Blurry.
09:11Nay.
09:12Blurry.
09:13Nay.
09:14Nay.
09:15Eh, let's see.
09:16That's one aye, two nays, and one, uh, me.
09:17The nays have it.
09:18Fire at will.
09:19Will?
09:20I thought he said his name was Tormid.
09:33There's no way I'm going in there.
09:35That nest smells terrible.
09:37Still, there is that opening back there in the distance.
09:42It must go somewhere.
09:45Could I persuade you with a gift?
09:48A present?
09:50A peace offering?
09:52An appeasement?
09:53Nope.
09:54No way.
09:55Nada.
09:56There's nothing you could offer that would make us move.
10:03Hmm.
10:04Okay, let's try the clothes peg.
10:06Boog, I've got it.
10:09I'll just put this clothes pin on my nose.
10:12Then I won't be able to smell the skunks.
10:16Ah!
10:18Hey!
10:20Ah!
10:22Ah!
10:24Ah!
10:26Ah!
10:28Ah!
10:30Ah!
10:32Ah!
10:35Ah!
10:37Ah!
10:39Ah!
10:41Ah!
10:43Okay, this is definitely not working.
10:45I can't get past them.
10:47They smell too much.
10:49And it's too dangerous, the scent.
10:52That, this, whatever they're spraying at us is bad.
11:00Ah, let's go down here.
11:02Hang on, Boog.
11:03I hope this is worth it.
11:05Let's see.
11:06Oh, okay, he's climbing down.
11:07Okay, let's try that.
11:08Whoa!
11:09Ah, okay.
11:10We're in a new area.
11:11There's all this stuff.
11:12Let's have a look around.
11:13Ah, she's at the arrow, the skittle bar again.

22:39Let me feel... Ah, fine materials. Nice padding. Soft cover. Firm, yet breathable. I thank
22:57you very much, oh tall slender one. And in return, why don't you take this instrument
23:02of my torture? Just drop it over a cliff someplace if you don't want it, okay?
23:08Oh, I would never do that.
23:14Looks like the cushion is working.
23:16Yes, it is. Much better. Thank you again. Now get outta here!
23:26Ah, I like that shot. You can see his comfy pillow in the distance there. I like that,
23:32that's a nice touch. Right, well I do have a small, small confession. I do remember the
23:41next thing I need to do to get further forward in the game. I have to admit, this is probably
23:45one of the hardest puzzles in the whole game. Because it just doesn't really make much logical
23:51sense. But you'll notice I've got all these green tiles here, with different shapes on
23:57them. And we've got this one, the white, the sort of pale peach one if you want, that's
24:03completely different from the rest. And I remember being stuck on this puzzle for ages,
24:09wondering what on earth to do with it. Don't have a clue. And I finally figured out what
24:16I needed to do. So, watch and learn, ladies and gentlemen.
24:27So there you go, you get the troll lady to wash the tile, revealing the symbol, the shapes
24:55behind it. So it's just like the other tiles we've got now. So we've just now got to figure
25:00out what all these tiles are for. We don't know. Again, I have played it before, so I
25:09do know where to go next. And again, this is another difficult puzzle. I got stuck at
25:14this one when I was younger as well, for ages. Couldn't figure out what on earth to do.
25:18This should either make that tree grow, or kill it completely. So for anyone who wants
25:30to know what you need to do, there is a small tree, and you need to throw the dragon poo
25:36on the tree. And it doesn't kill it, it actually makes it grow. So that's what you need to
25:43And now we can climb down the tree and move on to the next location. Right, it took me
25:51ages to figure that out. Now we're arriving at probably the most difficult puzzle in the
26:06entire game. When I was, I'm trying to think what age was I when I played this, I was probably
26:11only about 6 years old when I played Tauren's Passage, because it came out in 1995. Yeah,
26:19I was only 6 years old. And this particular puzzle I got stuck on for a long time. I mean
26:28I spent easily, like maybe an hour and a half staring at this puzzle, trying to figure it
26:38out, and I didn't use the cheat system. Now we're actually missing a piece. We're missing
26:45a tile, so we haven't actually collected them all yet, so it's a slight error of judgement
26:52on my part. But as I say, we didn't know how many we'd even collected. The good news is
26:58I know exactly where to find it, so let's go back to King Rupert and Queen Di.
27:29Your Majesty, I think this tile is part of something important.
27:34You're right, it's part of my floor.
27:37No, no, no, even more than that. You see, at the base of the opposite cliff, I've found
27:42an unusual room containing a large formation that would hold this tile perfectly. I feel
27:48certain that the formation is something important, perhaps it even holds access to the lands
27:53below.
27:54Why then of course you may take it.
27:57Thank you, Your Highness.
28:16Okay, so now we've got all the pieces, we can add that final piece onto the puzzle,
28:22and we're going to try and figure this out. Now, I believe from memory you have to create
28:29some sort of face. I'm not quite sure what kind of face, but I'm going to guess it's
28:39maybe something that's symmetrical, so it looks like there's maybe like a mouth there
28:44or maybe some eyes. So I'm just going to play around with this and see if I can figure it
28:49out. Bear in mind this took hours and hours and hours when I was younger, so we'll see
28:53if we can do it quicker this time. That looks good actually, that bottom bit with the mouth.
29:00Yeah, that's okay. I reckon that's the nose. No, I don't think that's right. Could be hair.
29:15Oh, that looks good. But then it's got like... I don't know. No, no, no, that's not right.
29:25Let's think, let's think. Nope, that's not working. No. Could be. No. That's not right
29:40at all. No. That's not working. I don't think that's right. I haven't even got all the pieces
29:52here yet. I need to get them all up. That's kind of getting there. We've got eyes, we've
30:00got a nose and a smile. Okay, let me think, let me think. Let's try... take that one off
30:12and then... let's try making it here. Because it could be here. Hmm. Nope. No, it's not
30:31working. This is not... this is just... oh, that's looking good. Oh, yeah, that could
30:41be it. This could be it. Oh, okay. It's looking like a face. It's not quite looking like a
30:50face enough. Okay, so... okay, that's definitely right. I'm pretty sure that's right. That
31:00could be right as well, mind you. Nope. Uh, no, that's not right either. Oh, this is so
31:11frustrating. This is just as frustrating as it was when I played this years ago. I just
31:16don't understand. No. Oh, wait a minute, that looks good. What's that? No. Um. It's just
31:39not falling into place properly. Oh, that looks... that looks good. That looks really
31:45good. No. Ah, that looked like a face. And it was symmetrical. It's just... nope. Nope.
32:00It's not right. Uh. Right, that one looked right. I should have put that one back. Oh,
32:27man. This is getting worse. I quite like pointing and click adventure game puzzles,
32:39but they can drive you mad sometimes. It's more fun, I think, when you know how to solve
32:46them. See, that definitely looks like a face. Okay, we're getting a hint. I might actually
33:13have to cheat, because I'm stuck. Yeah, that hint's not really helping at all. I did notice
33:38only got a body, so it's probably likely be a face. I did work that one out. I think
33:44even a five-year-old could have worked that one out. It feels like it's almost there.
33:54It's...
34:08And even a cute little dimple in its chin. Hmm, that's interesting. A dimple in the chin.
34:14A dimple. Very specific. Is that what it is? I can't remember how you do this. Sorry, folks,
34:31about this. This is so frustrating. I can't get past this part. I bet other people have
34:40done this before. I don't think you're ever going to get to the licentia at this rate.
34:56Nope. Ah, now that looks right. That looks better. I think we've done it. No! That's
35:23it. We've done it. That's it. It's a face. Come on. That must be right. That's right.
35:38Look at it. It's a face. I'm going to make him unhappy, because that's how I'm feeling
35:45right now. I've got no idea. The mouth is frowning. Four black squares form bangs.
35:56The eyes overlay four tiles. Hmm, okay. The mouth is frowning. Okay, so he's not happy
36:12then. Maybe if we just turn it upside down. Ah, yes! Yes! Yes! Finally!
