Crypto Heists Surge with Over $1.3 Billion Stolen in First Half of 2024. Crypto Exchanges Remain Top Targets.

Hackers stole over $1.3 billion worth of cryptocurrency in the first half of 2024, more than double the nearly $650 million stolen in the same period in 2023. The top five hacks accounted for 70% of the stolen funds, with the largest hack stealing over $300 million from Japanese exchange DMM Bitcoin. Private key and seed phrase compromises were the leading attack vectors used by hackers to steal crypto in 2024. Crypto exchanges remain top targets for hacks due to storing large amounts of funds, with Mt. Gox losing $54 billion worth of bitcoin after a series of hacks in 2014.
