00:14And even gardening also.
00:16Stress levels in Singapore have steadily climbed over the last two years.
00:21According to a recent study,
00:22close to nine in ten people have felt stressed in 2023.
00:26This is seven percentage points more than the global average.
00:30Despite this, Singapore ranked the happiest country in Asia
00:33and 30th globally on the 2024 World Happiness Report.
00:37So, how are Singaporeans de-stressing outside of work?
00:41And how much are they spending to do it?
00:44Asia One recently did a survey with 1,340 valid responses
00:49and found that the most common activity respondents do
00:51during their free time over the weekend was watching videos,
00:55with almost a quarter of them doing so regardless of age.
00:58This was far ahead of things like shopping, reading or journaling,
01:02afternoon tea or dinner dates, outdoor sports and fitness,
01:06and cooking or baking.
01:07Respondents were most likely to say that they were most comfortable
01:10doing these activities with family members,
01:13followed by just themselves, then with close friends.
01:16In terms of what respondents got out of these activities,
01:19reducing stress was what was most commonly quoted,
01:22followed by being able to bond with loved ones
01:25and having fun.
01:27The median amount spent per month on leisure was $101 to $200.
01:32About a quarter of these respondents spent more than $500,
01:36with a third of those aged 55 to 64 spending upwards of $1,000 per month.
01:4240% of total respondents had less than five hours of free time per week,
01:46with those aged 24 and below having the least amount of free time.
01:50In comparison, the median number of hours free per week
01:53was highest among those 55 to 64 at 16 to 20 hours per week.
01:59If given an extra two free days a week,
02:02around a third of respondents would choose to sleep more or do more of the same.
02:06If respondents had the time, cooking or baking, learning a new language
02:10and picking up digital or tech skills
02:12topped the list of what they would choose as a new skill or hobby.
02:16To expand on our findings, we headed out to find out
02:19what leisurely activities Singaporeans were doing in their free time.
02:23I enjoy sports. I play soccer.
02:26I like to exercise.
02:28I like to go to K-pop, go to TikTok,
02:31then read whatever is available.
02:34Then K-pop, I read about celebrities and all that.
02:37I do have free time. Now, I'm giving piano lessons.
02:41I have a son, so we go out. We go to mall and eat.
02:46I enjoy spending time with my family as well as doing my hobbies itself,
02:51including golf. Go to the gym as well.
02:55Usually, I would read books at my own free time.
02:59I like to cycle.
03:00I like to trek. Also Singapore, also hiking.
03:04I go to cycling and running.
03:07Actually, I just bought my bicycle, so it's like $700 something.
03:12About $100 a month.
03:13I have a gym membership, so one month is about $200.
03:18Putting it, what?
03:20Subjective, yeah, but generally a few hundreds.
03:24Around $10 to $20.
03:27Above $2,000.
03:29If I travel overseas, it's like hiking with shopping,
03:35with exploring the area.
03:37Maybe $2,000 to $3,000.
03:39Probably about one to five hours.
03:43Four hours a day.
03:4528 hours.
03:46I've got a lot of free time.
03:48Honestly, quite a lot.
03:49Maybe six to ten hours.
03:50Maybe six to ten hours.
03:52Six to ten hours.
03:54Probably about six hours.
03:57I will sleep more and go out.

04:05I don't want to sleep more. I have slept enough.
04:08Others, like jalan-jalan or whatever.
04:11I enjoy cooking, so probably I will take up some cooking classes.
04:15I will do more side hustles.
04:19And I will pick up a new hobby.
04:20Honestly, given a choice, I will definitely spend more time
04:23on the existing sports that I'm doing.
04:26But if let's say it's something new, probably martial arts.
04:29Probably learn a new language.
04:31Cooking, because I love to cook.
04:33Motocross.
04:343D CAD.
04:36Because I have a 3D printer at home.
04:38I went for one class of CAD, but I'm not so good at it.
04:43Photography, like cooking, and musical instruments.
04:46Actually, we wanted to learn drums,
04:49but we just don't have that time anymore.
04:52How to make coffee, some cooking lessons.
04:56Arts and crafts.
04:58And even gardening also.
05:00Half of the people we interviewed enjoyed spending their free time
05:03doing some form of sports or physical activity.
05:06Be it playing football, going to the gym, or cycling.
05:094 in 10 of those we spoke to said that they had around 6-10 hours of free time per week.
05:14And half of all respondents also said that if they had the time,
05:17they would choose to learn how to cook as a new skill.
05:20If given two extra days per week,
05:22those we spoke to were most likely to spend their time with friends and family,
05:26followed by picking up new skills and hobbies like motocross and 3D printing,
05:30or doing more of what they already do.
05:32So, what do you think?
