00:00A male brown hare is searching for a female.
00:12Using his excellent sense of smell, he can tell that there is one nearby.
00:23Getting to mate with her won't be easy.
00:30He must deal with three challenges before she will consider him.
00:36First, boxing.
00:40To impress her, he must match her strength, but be careful not to hurt her.
00:47Only if he can hold his own will he be allowed to move to the next stage.
00:57He puts up a good fight and so passes her first test.
01:01Her second test?
01:04Stamina.
01:07Hares are Britain's fastest mammal and can reach speeds of 45 miles an hour.
01:14The test attracts other males, all fired up and eager to mate.
01:23His final test is to get rid of his rivals.
01:33Despite their competition, he hangs on to the top spot.
01:40But distracted hares must be careful.
01:45Their courtship competitions have made them conspicuous.
01:52A golden eagle can spot one from two miles away.
01:59In a straight line, the eagle is faster, but by twisting and turning, the hare dodges its attacks.
02:07Nonetheless, she is relentless.
