00:00A supernatural battle, the shounen manga Tougen Anki is confirmed to get an anime adaptation
00:14which will premiere in 2025, revealing a teaser video.
00:18The story follows Shiki who has the blood of an Oni but his father's blood being that
00:24of a Momotaro.
00:26Normally, those with Momotaro blood hunt the Oni but Shiki's father refused to kill him
00:32as an infant.
00:33Instead, he adopted Shiki and raised him despite the rebellious attitude and dangerous temper
00:40that comes with Oni blood.
00:42When a member of the Momotaro agency kills Shiki's father, Shiki vows to avenge him.
00:48But as he hones his abilities and learns to control his Oni blood, will he be strong enough
00:54to survive the dangers waiting for him?
00:57Tougen Anki is a shounen that unfortunately only looks good.
01:02Comparatively a more stereotypical story, this series does nothing new yet is filled
01:08with cliches and tropes.
01:10The main character Shiki has an origin very similar to that of Blue Exorcist.
01:16The character designs are very similar to Fire Force and many of the powers and actions
01:22are based off some other series.
01:25Now this is completely fine as there is nothing inherently wrong with following a familiar
01:30formula.
01:31But following from this, the story should at the very least aim to do something different.
01:37But Tougen Anki suffers from constant flaws of bad pacing and a story that follows a generic
01:43route preventing it from standing out.
01:46Featuring the infamous shounen trope of a hot-headed bratty protagonist who loses his
01:52family and becomes an overpowered individual seeking revenge, this characterization doesn't
01:59change over time.
02:01Most of the characters are differentiated from one another with their own unique backstory
02:06and some cool looking powers.
02:08But I couldn't help but feel that all of them are still painfully basic or unnecessarily
02:14overblown and most of all, done before.
02:17All of this leads to a story that is seemingly tragic but makes you feel nothing as it just
02:23ain't relatable.
02:24While the distinction between good and evil is presented in a straightforward reasonable
02:30manner, I still think it would be a better series if it tried to do its own thing.
02:35The artwork is the highlight of the show with cool looking fight scenes including plenty
02:41of blood and gore.
02:42Unfortunately, once again, the female characters suffer from being over-sexualized which is
02:48one and maybe the only strategy this series has to be still remembered.
02:53Overall, Tougen Anki is an average series that really doesn't cut it and is not up
02:59to the modern standard of what a shounen should be.
03:03If you have nothing else to watch and are interested in an action-revenge-fueled plot
03:08with plenty of fighting, then this may satisfy you.
03:11But if you want something that is not tried, then this is not the show.
