Having starred together in five feature films, most notably 2004’s "Anchorman," it’s fair to call Will Ferrell and Steve Carell an iconic comedic duo. Now they’re back together in "Despicable Me 4," but if you’ve been paying attention, it’s technically not their first collaboration to be released this year.

Peacock’s "The Office: Superfan Episodes," an extended cut of NBC’s groundbreaking sitcom, includes the four-episode arc that sees Will Ferrell’s Deangelo Vickers take over for Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. When I spoke with the two friends at the Despicable Me 4 press junket, I brought this up, and Ferrell volunteered some “superfan trivia” of his own, revealing that this major run on national television was originally supposed to be a simple cameo.

00:00Because they came out earlier this year, I just finished binging the Office superfan episodes.
00:05Did you learn a lot about your comedic relationship that you were able to take with you to stuff like this from your experience in that?
00:12Well, it's just easy to work with Will. He's... I have complete faith and respect.
00:19Likewise.
00:20You know.
00:21But you know what's interesting about that little superfan trivia here?
00:26I knew it was Steve's last season and I just reached out to my agents going,
00:30I'd love to just do a cameo on The Office because I know Steve.
00:34And they were like, okay, they're excited. They loved it.
00:38What about a four-show arc?
00:40I was like, oh.
00:42And then it became a thing.
00:43Yeah.
00:44And I was like, of course, this will be so much fun.
00:47And it's one of my favorite things I've ever gotten to do.
00:50Even though I did feel like I wasn't supposed to be there.
00:53It was so emotional.
00:54Oh, no, no, no.
00:55It was such a gift. It was a gift that you were there.
