Canada fell 2-0 to Argentina in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 semifinals on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Argentina scored a goal in each half through Julián Álvarez in the 22nd minute and Lionel Messi in the 51st minute to secure a place in the final.

Canada had the first hint of a goal when Jacob Shaffelburg had a shot inside the area in the 7th minute.

The Canadians continued on the offensive and Jonathan David was a threat in the box in the 17th minute but was pressured by the Argentine defense. Alphonso Davies had a shot on the next play, but it was blocked.

Julián Álvarez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute to give the FIFA world champions the lead.

Lionel Messi expanded the score in the 51st minute with a shot inside the area.

Maxime Crepeau denied Julián Álvarez in the 61st minute to keep the score within two goals.

Liam Millar tried from distance in the 87th minute but just wide.

Tani Oluwaseyi had a scoring opportunity in the 89th minute but was denied by Emiliano Martínez.

Oluwaseyi had a header in the box in the 90th minute but was just inches wide of the right post.

The result puts Canada in the third-place match on Saturday against the loser of the Colombia-Uruguay semifinal. In their debut season, the Reds have secured at least fourth place
