00:00Hi, I am Dr. Anita, consultant gynecologist, Kaveri Hospital. In this video we will discuss
00:05about hot flashes. So what are hot flashes? Hot flashes are more common in women after
00:11menopause. Hot flashes, the women experiences sudden episodes of sweating and feeling of
00:18warmth all over the body, more so in the face and in the upper body. A woman can break out
00:25in sweat suddenly like after prolonged exposure in the sun or after dehydration. So this is
00:31due to estrogen deficiency in the menopausal age group. Normally in Indian women the menopause
00:37is around 47 to 50 years. So after menopause the hormone called estrogen drastically comes
00:44down. So now this precipitates hot flashes. Now hot flashes occur due to sudden cutaneous
00:52vasodilatation which the women may experience as warmth and sudden feeling of sweating episodes.
00:59So what do you do to minimize the symptoms of hot flashes? The women should stay well hydrated,
01:07avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, wear loose fitting cotton clothes, sipping ice water during
01:14an attack of hot flashes will reduce the symptoms and taking a balanced diet rich in vitamins and
01:20minerals and you can consult your gynecologist regarding taking supplements of phytoestrogens
01:26like soy protein to reduce the symptoms of hot flashes. Thank you.
