00:00Amelia Bedelia's First Apple Pie
00:29By Herman Parrish
00:31Illustrated by Lynn Avril
00:35Amelia Bedelia was visiting her grandparents.
00:39It was a glorious autumn afternoon, the perfect day to rake leaves into piles and run around
00:44the yard.
00:46Fall is in the air, said Granddad.
00:52Granddad and Amelia Bedelia looked up.
00:55So are the birds, said Amelia Bedelia.
00:59C?
01:00W?
01:01What are they trying to spell?
01:07Just then, Amelia Bedelia's grandma came outside.
01:10Quick, said Granddad.
01:13Look busy.
01:14But it was too late.
01:15Hey, lazy bones, Grandma said jokingly.
01:19If you're just going to stand around, I've got a job for you.
01:23What do you need, Granddad asked.
01:26Apples, said Grandma.
01:28I made pie dough.
01:29If you'll get some apples, I can teach Amelia Bedelia how to bake an apple pie.
01:37Grandma's apple pie was Amelia Bedelia's favorite.
01:40Hooray, she yelled.
01:43Race you to the car.
01:44She started to run, but tripped over a branch and landed right in the pile of leaves.
01:50Woosh.
01:51How was your trip, asked Granddad as he helped her up.
01:55Fun, she said.
01:57Apple is in the air and on the ground, too.
02:00Granddad smiled and said, Watch your step.
02:06Amelia Bedelia tried to watch her steps, but it made her dizzy to look down at her feet
02:11all the time.
02:16Amelia Bedelia and Granddad were already in the car when Grandma called out, Be sure to
02:21pick up Granny Smith.
02:23Who is Granny Smith?
02:25Is she helping us make the pie, Amelia Bedelia asked.
02:29You bet, Granddad said.
02:31We couldn't do it without her.
02:37Amelia Bedelia and Granddad drove out into the country.
02:41Your supermarket is far away, said Amelia Bedelia.
02:45We aren't going to the supermarket, said Granddad.
02:49We'll get our apples at the farmer's market.
02:52What?
02:53Asked Amelia Bedelia.
02:55Do we need to buy a farmer?
02:58No, said Granddad, laughing.
03:01Their apples are much fresher.
03:06Apples are good for me, right?
03:08Asked Amelia Bedelia.
03:09Oh, yes, said Granddad.
03:12An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
03:15They're good for your teeth, too.
03:18Folks call them nature's toothbrush.
03:20Hey, Granddad, said Amelia Bedelia.
03:24If I eat an apple a day, I won't have to go to the doctor or
03:28dentist ever again.
03:31Granddad smiled.
03:33I wish it worked that way, pumpkin, he said.
03:36Granddad picked up a bright green apple, polished it on his
03:40jacket, and tossed it to Amelia Bedelia.
03:43Nice catch, he said.
03:45Meet Granny Smith.
03:47Amelia Bedelia took a loud, crunchy bite.
03:50Granny is yummy, she said.
03:55Bushel baskets overflowed with red, yellow, orange, pink, and
04:00green apples.
04:01Some apples wore stripes, or spots, or splotches.
04:05The colors reminded Amelia Bedelia of autumn.
04:08While Granddad chose apples to buy, Amelia Bedelia read the
04:12names out loud.
04:14One kind was called Delicious, but they all
04:17looked tasty to her.
04:21When they got home, Grandma went right to work, coring and
04:25peeling the apples.
04:27Amelia Bedelia measured the peels to see which one was the
04:31longest.
04:32Grandma cut each apple into two pieces, then into four
04:37pieces, and then into eight pieces.
04:41Finally, she sprinkled sugar and cinnamon on the slices.
04:44Next, Grandma pulled out all of her pie pans, hunting for just
04:48the right one.
04:50Amelia Bedelia found a tiny pan.
04:53Is this a toy, she asked.
04:55No, said Grandma.
04:57That is a real pie pan.
04:59It's just really small.
05:01Aha, here's the one I want.
05:03Now please get me a little flour, sugarplum.
05:09Amelia Bedelia took a big piece of pie and put it in her
05:14Amelia Bedelia spied a small flower on the windowsill, and she
05:18picked it.
05:19Here you go, Grandma, she said.
05:22Thanks, sweetie, said Grandma.
05:24Then she showed Amelia Bedelia where she kept the flour she
05:27used for baking.
05:29Grandma rolled out the dough.
05:31It got flatter and thinner.
05:33It got rounder and bigger.
05:36Grandma said, careful, watch your fingers.
05:39Amelia Bedelia took her hands off the table.
05:42She watched her fingers very carefully.
05:45They look pretty boring.
05:47She wondered why she had to do this to make an apple pie.
05:51Now we need a sprinkle of flour, said Grandma.
05:55Amelia Bedelia reached into the sack of flour, grabbed a handful,
05:59and sprinkled it all over their heads.
06:02Grandma laughed.
06:03Not on us, she said, on the dough.
06:06At last, said Grandma, we're ready to put this pie together.
06:11And that's exactly what Grandma and Amelia Bedelia did.
06:14Then Grandma popped the pie into the oven, set the timer, and
06:18started to clean up the kitchen.
06:23That's when Amelia Bedelia had an idea.
06:26She took the last piece of pie and put it in the oven.
06:30She baked it in the oven, and it was ready to eat.
06:33Amelia Bedelia had an idea.
06:35She took the leftover dough and rolled out two small circles.
06:40She put one in the little pie pan, filled it with the extra apples, and
06:44plopped the other circle on top.
06:46Then she crimped the edge all around.
06:50A smidgen of dough was left, so she made a little flower,
06:54a tiny daisy to decorate the top.
06:57Your mom and dad will be here soon, said Grandma.
07:00Then we'll have a pie party.
07:02Yippee, said Amelia Bedelia.
07:05Granddad heard the commotion and came into the kitchen.
07:08What are we celebrating, he asked.
07:11Honey, said Grandma.
07:13Amelia Bedelia made her first apple pie.
07:19After Grandma took her pie out of the oven,
07:23After Grandma took her pie out of the oven,
07:27Amelia Bedelia carefully and secretly slid hers in.
07:31I'm going to get this outside to cool, said Grandma.
07:38It was time to get ready for the party.
07:41Grandma hummed as she set the table.
07:44Soon, Granddad was whistling the same tune.
07:47Outside, the birds were chirping and tweeting and singing like mad.
07:52Listen, said Amelia Bedelia.
07:55It sounds like the birds are having a party, too.
07:58My pie, exclaimed Grandma.
08:05They all ran outside.
08:07The pie was covered with birds.
08:10Scram, hollered Grandma.
08:12Shoo, shoo.
08:14Amelia Bedelia took off her shoe and handed it to Grandma.
08:18But it was too late.
08:20Our pie, said Amelia Bedelia.
08:23Gone, said Grandma.
08:30Just then, Amelia Bedelia's parents arrived.
08:33Amelia Bedelia's dad stared at the empty pie pan.
08:37Couldn't you wait for us, he said.
08:40The birds ate her pie, said Amelia Bedelia.
08:44What birds, asked her mom.
08:46I think they were swallows, said Granddad.
08:50They sure were, said Amelia Bedelia.
08:53They swallowed the whole thing.
08:58Well, sweetheart, said Amelia Bedelia's mother.
09:01Let's imagine how good it would have tasted while we eat our ice cream.
09:09The whole family tried to enjoy the ice cream and not think about the pie.
09:14But that was impossible.
09:16We made the best pie, said Amelia Bedelia.
09:20It was a thing of beauty, said Grandma.
09:23It would have been delicious, said Granddad.
09:27It was a perfect pie, said Amelia Bedelia.
09:31Her lower lip trembled.
09:33She let out a sob.
09:38You know, said Amelia Bedelia's father, just hearing you talk about that pie
09:44makes me think I can smell a fresh baked pie coming out of the oven.
09:49My pie, exclaimed Amelia Bedelia.
09:56They raced to the kitchen.
09:58Grandma took the tiny pie out of the oven and set it on the table.
10:02There it was, bubbling hot and baked to perfection.
10:07They all gathered around and gazed at it as though it were a brand new baby.
10:10It's absolutely perfect, said Amelia Bedelia's mother.
10:19Just like Grandma's, said Granddad.
10:22Only smaller, said Amelia Bedelia.
10:25And you made it all by yourself, said Grandma.
10:29This time, said Amelia Bedelia's father, let's let the pie cool down in the house.
10:36But no one could wait.
10:42Grandma cut tiny pieces for everyone.
10:45She took one bite and declared, this is the best apple pie I have ever tasted.
10:51Amelia Bedelia's smile was so big that it was hard for her to eat.
10:56Thank you, Grandma, she said, and thank you, Granny.
11:00Granny who, said Amelia Bedelia's mother.
11:04Granny Smith, said Amelia Bedelia.
11:07She made all of our apples in the first place.
