00:00More than 36,000 fanatical Geordies crammed into St. James' Park to watch Newcastle take on Southampton in January 2000
00:07Both clubs started this one in the bottom six, but Newcastle had lost only once in their last 10 league games
00:14Southampton on the other hand had only managed one win in their last seven against Bradford City
00:19They had beaten Newcastle 4-2 in August though, which proved to be one of the final nails in the coffin for Ruud Gullit
00:25He only lasted two more games before Bobby Robson was installed as manager
00:31This game saw the return of Spanish international Marcelino in the heart of the defence
00:36Alan Shearer started with Duncan Ferguson up front, a potent threat
00:40Dave Jones' main problem had been a lack of goals, highlighted by the fact that striker James Beattie hadn't scored all season
00:47Mark Hughes was recalled to start up front with him in the absence of Hassan Kashloul
00:52Central defender Dean Richards was fit again, as was partner Richard Dryden, who returned after 15 months of injury problems
00:59The Geordie masses were expectant, they had a team to be feared, but so often things hadn't gone according to plan
01:06Commentary at St James' Park from Alan Parry
01:09This looks on paper a tremendously difficult fixture for Southampton, who haven't got a very good record either in recent times against Newcastle
01:18With the exception of that fine 4-2 victory in only the second weekend of the season
01:26They make the first attacking move
01:37Warren Barton with a long ball forward
01:40And it's at the heart of defence where Southampton have had problems
01:45They have lost Lundik Vamp through injury, Richards only just back to try and shackle Alan Shearer
01:52He's been out injured as well, Duncan Ferguson of course, the other man providing Southampton with problems today I'm sure
02:02Newcastle's first attack
02:04Beaten only once in their last ten league games, five wins and four draws in that period
02:11Kieran Dyer in possession for them
02:13Shearer gets a little nudge from behind
02:17Good pressure there, but unfortunate bounce for Newcastle and has given Southampton the goal kick
02:25Well their manager Dave Jones has been under pressure really from the start of the season when the bookmakers in England made him odds on favourite
02:33To be the first Premiership manager to lose his job
02:36They were wrong on that count
02:38And let's hope they're wrong full stop
02:42Bobby Robson on the opposite bench
02:45With all the experience of his many, many years in the game
02:49This is his 26th game now in charge of Newcastle
02:52His record reads 11 wins, 8 draws, 6 defeats, very respectable indeed
02:58Suspicion of a handball there by Solano as he controlled it
03:02But the referees let him go on and a chance straight away
03:05Shearer hits the crossbar but Duncan Ferguson hits the back of the net
03:11The worst possible start for Southampton
03:15Newcastle in the lead
03:17But I think Southampton will be very unhappy about the part played in that by Norberto Solano
03:22Look at that
03:23Was that handball or did he use his chest to control it?
03:26Referee let play go on, Shearer's header thumping against the crossbar
03:30And Duncan Ferguson on hand to convert a straightforward opportunity
03:35And the strike force that Newcastle have been trying to get together for so long
03:40Is really paying dividends
03:47Disastrous start for Southampton
03:50Pistone, the Italian, taking Newcastle forward again
03:57Well, we always thought it would be a formidable partnership
04:01And it is proving to be just that
04:06And Gallyspeed wins it back again
04:09Ferguson in possession once more, Solano
04:13It's a decent little ball forward to Dyer, Ferguson's there again
04:16Oh my word!
04:19Two goals in a minute for Duncan Ferguson
04:23Newcastle are on fire here
04:25And Southampton have got a mountain to climb already
04:29And we've only had just over three minutes
04:33Brilliant finish by the huge Scotsman
04:37Kieran Dyer just held it up for him
04:39And Duncan Ferguson's confidence is so high
04:43He struck the ball first time
04:45Beyond the reach of Southampton goalkeeper Paul Jones
04:49And Newcastle have made an unbelievable start
04:56Colletteur for Southampton
04:58Who are shell-shocked
05:01And not surprisingly
05:03But Boamorte wins it back for them here
05:07Decent ball in the middle
05:09Pistone heads behind for a corner
05:11One of many players who didn't seem to have any future
05:15Under Ruud Gullit, Pistone
05:17Didn't even get a squad number along with Rob Lee
05:20At the beginning of the season but he's in the team now
05:22And Lee would have been had he been fit
05:25Richards has had a good season when it comes to scoring goals
05:29He's got four already
05:31So he's a man they'll have to watch carefully here in Newcastle
05:40Oh the goalkeeper missed it
05:44Referee not seeing that as a foul
05:46And Hughes with the shot over the crossbar
05:49Davis on hand to keep the pressure on the Newcastle defence
05:55Well he's not really betraying much emotion at the moment Bobby Robson
05:59But he couldn't have dreamed of a start like this
06:04Fantastic way he has turned this club around
06:07Well Newcastle are amongst the highest goal scorers
06:11In the premiership
06:12There's only Manchester United and Arsenal in fact who scored more than them now
06:17That's at home
06:19And they're on the lookout for another one here
06:23Ferguson's second goal was their 25th at St James' Park
06:27In 11 premiership fixes this season an excellent record
06:31But they do have a tendency to concede goals
06:34With alarming regularity as well
06:36So this game isn't over by any means
06:39Ferguson knocks it down
06:41And another chance it's hit the post
06:43This time from Alan Shearer
06:45It could have been three
06:47Inside seven minutes
06:50How unlucky Shearer has now hit the crossbar and the post
06:54And we haven't got ten minutes gone on the clock
06:58And the Ferguson Shearer duo is in absolutely top rate form here at the moment
07:06There's Luis Bouamati the Portuguese international
07:12And again he doesn't even manage to win the throw
07:14Challenged by Solano
07:16Who's a very big favourite
07:17With the home fans here
07:29Gabi Zas
07:34Newcastle quite happy to go back
07:36To keep possession Marcelino
07:38The Spanish international
07:41And the Italian Pistoni returns the ball
07:43To him
07:44Back in the side after missing the last three games
07:47With a thigh injury Marcelino
07:49What a ball that was for Shearer
07:51Richards keeping tight
07:53But Shearer's got away from him
07:55Did well to get a shot in there Alan Shearer
07:58Who inevitably is leading goalscorer for Newcastle this season
08:02With 19 in his 30 appearances before today
08:09Lovely play in the middle of the field again
08:11Kieran Dyer forces his way forward
08:14It was a great tackle by Richards
08:16But now Solano and Shearer
08:18And Solano and it's three
08:22Southampton torn apart
08:24By the sheer quality of Newcastle's football
08:27That was a brilliant goal
08:29And Alan Shearer
08:30The goalscorer supreme
08:32Is turning into a provider today
08:35This was a beauty
08:36It started from deep inside their own half
08:39Kieran Dyer with that really aggressive run forward
08:42Solano swap passes with Shearer
08:45And you never doubted his ability to finish
08:49Norberto Solano
08:52Scores for the first time in fact in 22 games this season
08:57His fourth goal of the campaign
08:59And Southampton are facing
09:02An embarrassing afternoon
09:04Here in the North East
09:06Three down
09:0717 minutes gone
09:09How do they get out of this one?
09:11Beaty battling well here for Southampton
09:13That's what they need
09:14That kind of attitude
09:16Couple of goals
09:17Wouldn't go amiss either
09:24Solano goes down
09:26The home fans scream free kick
09:28Referee didn't see it that way
09:34Southampton's throw
09:41Clearance by Marcelino
09:49It's good play by Salt that brought down
09:52Foul by the Spaniard
10:05And the clearance comes out
10:06That's a brilliant save
10:08Well considering he's had so little to do
10:11Steve Harper has produced a wonderful save
10:14To deny Ripley
10:16A goal that would have given Southampton
10:18Just an inkling of hope
10:22That really was a world class save
10:29And it was Shearer back defending the corner
10:32Good work by Dier
10:36Southampton have had a good few minutes
10:38Compared to what's gone before
10:40And looking a bit more threatening now
10:48And Gallagher's given it away
10:49Southampton will be
10:51At least
10:52Mildly encouraged by this little spell
10:54But coming up to half an hour
10:56It's going to be a tough game
10:58Mildly encouraged by this little spell
11:00But coming up to half an hour gone
11:02There's still three behind
11:05Ripley again
11:11Well had he scored moments ago
11:13It would have been the 50th goal of his career
11:15Ripley
11:16What a save to deny him
11:18Kieran Dyer takes Newcastle back on the attack again
11:21In comes Ferguson
11:25I would not put a penny against him getting his hat-trick today
11:28On the mood
11:31Lovely ball in
11:33He absolutely thrives on them, Ferguson
11:37Excellent cross
11:45Oh!
11:46What an embarrassing goal that is
11:48To make it four
11:50Well having done so brilliantly
11:52Moments ago
11:54Paul Jones fell for the sucker punch then
11:56As Kieran Dyer attacked
11:58Dipped it in, it was a horrible mishmash of a goal
12:01But it's that kind of day for Southampton
12:05Great determined run by Dyer
12:07And it came off the shin
12:09Of I think
12:10Richard Dryden
12:12And
12:13With the intervention of the goalkeeper as well
12:15I think you really do have to put that one down as an own goal
12:19I don't think even Dyer
12:21Would claim that one
12:28Solano, glorious ball
12:31Alan Shearer
12:34Ferguson up with it, as ever
12:36Foul
12:38And he took it intelligently and quickly
12:40Warren Barton
12:42Ferguson's pulled away
12:43Oh! Against the post again
12:45That's three times they've struck the woodwork now
12:48In this first half, Newcastle
12:50Not to mention the four goals they've already scored
12:59Goal!
13:01Goal!
13:03Goal!
13:05Goal!
13:07Goal!
13:09Goal!
13:11It's Kevin Gallagher
13:13Another good cross by Barton
13:16And the whistle's gone
13:18A penalty?
13:20Well, Paul Jones is as mystified as I am
13:24Shirt tugging, says referee Barry
13:28Goal!
13:30Goal!
13:32The Saints have now conceded a penalty
13:35Ten minutes before half-time
13:37Dean Richards, apparently the culprit
13:39And even though Ferguson's on a hat-trick
13:41Alan Shearer says get out of it
13:43I'm taking this one
13:45This to make it 5-0
13:47Goal!
13:49Goal!
13:51It's hit the underside of the bar and come out
13:54And they hit the bar again
13:57And Shearer tries again
14:00Well, this is like Billy Smart Circus
14:02This game is unbelievable
14:06Shearer misses a penalty
14:08That's a headline in itself
14:18What's going to happen next in this game?
14:23Well, I did not see the offence that Mr Barry saw
14:26So maybe there's a bit of rough justice there
14:35He won't want to see his penalty again, that's for sure
14:48It has probably been the most eventful half
14:51In the Premiership this season in many ways
15:03It's a goal kick to Newcastle
15:06Who lead 4-0
15:10Could have been, should have been 5
15:12It's not a goal kick, referees overrule the linesman
15:15And given a corner in fact
15:17Ripley will take it
15:21Goal!
15:25And the chance here
15:27Off the line
15:29Solano back defending on the post
15:32Denies Southampton a goal
15:35Well, the smallest man in their team
15:37That's probably his most useful position to be
15:40Really on corner kicks
15:42And he was in the right place then
15:46It's a bit short for Monk, didn't get much
15:49Chance to get a foot round that one
15:51Speed came flying in
15:55And Bobby Robson's team will go off to a huge standing ovation
15:59You can bet on that
16:08Ferguson and Shearer combining again here
16:13Still time perhaps for another goal
16:15What a ball that was!
16:17Solano
16:19Gallagher
16:21And the referee about to blow the whistle
16:24Which brings to an end a remarkable 45 minutes
16:27Here at St. James' Park
16:29It truly has been
16:31The most entertaining 45 minutes football
16:33That I've seen in the premiership this season
16:36And there's the promise of more goals to come
16:39At half time Newcastle United 4
16:41Southampton 0
16:52CROWD CHEERS
16:57WHISTLE BLOWS
17:03And immediately Newcastle win a free kick
17:07Remember they'll move up two places above Middlesbrough and Wimbledon
17:11To 13th in the table
17:13Bobby Robson's team
17:15If they collect all three points here today
17:17And I think the only if is
17:19Can they score more goals
17:21Rather than can they get all three points
17:32Shearer finally hits it
17:34CROWD CHEERS
17:49Barton
17:51Solano
17:53How often they've linked down this right hand side
17:57Gary Speed on the end of it here
17:59Comes again to Shearer
18:02Ripley back defending
18:04Now Hughes
18:11I think they've restored a bit of pride in this second half
18:14Southampton in all fairness to them
18:22Alan Shearer good layoff Solano gets it back to him
18:26And again Shearer almost in the role of provider
18:31Speed
18:33It's a good ball
18:35Oh it was a great save by Jones
18:37Solano measured that one so accurately
18:40Was looking for the top of the net
18:42And very nearly found it
18:44Very good save by Paul Jones
18:46Very good
18:48That was on its way in
18:52Solano's team
18:55Solano denied what would have been his second goal of the game
19:00And Newcastle what would have been their fifth
19:13Oh look at that cheeky ball Solano to Dyer
19:16Not the best pass by him then
19:20And they can try again
19:23Oh dear that's a naughty challenge by Hughes
19:30And the referee's not even seen it as a free kick
19:32So he's off the hook
19:41Finally a foul on Dabizas
19:44Well I don't think the referee could have really seen that challenge by Mark Hughes
19:49Had he done so he would have been in trouble surely
19:52He's smashed into Solano
19:54With his arm
20:16Solano
20:17Rare mistake from him and he still gets it back
20:20And takes over again
20:22Oh
20:29Booze for
20:31Mark Hughes for
20:33One or two challenges he's made in this game
20:37Now Benali
20:45Comfortably defended by Newcastle
20:53And Harper
20:55With the exception of one
20:56Outstanding save
20:58From Ripley in the first half has had so little to do
21:00For Bobby Robson's team today
21:17Now Domi
21:19Shearer
21:23Oh it was a great save from Jones
21:26Is this to be one of those rare days when Alan Shearer doesn't score
21:32He hit that with such power
21:34From the edge of the box
21:42He's still out there urging them on
21:45He wants them to keep their foot on that accelerator pedal right
21:48To the finish line
21:53Yeah
22:08It's a decent ball that
22:11Only half cleared
22:13And it's a corner
22:19Well they'll raise the roof here
22:21If Duncan Ferguson gets his hat-trick
22:23Or Alan Shearer
22:25Gets on the score-sheet
22:36Kieran Dyer has also had a very good game
22:38Will take the kick
22:40Come on get out
22:42Get out
22:43Dabby's Ass turned it back into the danger area
22:45And back again to the Greek
22:46And it's deflected in
22:47And they've got their fifth goal
22:49Dabby's Ass will claim it
22:51But another deflection of a defender
22:53Has been Southampton's undoing
22:56And finally
22:57Newcastle do get a breakthrough in the second half
23:00Dabby's Ass has been in terrific scoring form this season
23:03Will he claim that one
23:05It came off Gary Monk
23:06And was deflected into the net
23:08Well if you're being generous you'll say yes
23:11But really for me that's another own goal
23:13By Monk
23:15And Dave Jones knows that
23:17The long winter that stretches ahead
23:19Has just become a little longer today
23:33Offside there
23:35Stuart Ripley
23:45Stoppage time being played now
23:47Sixty seconds of it
23:54And that'll be a blessed relief I think to Southampton
24:01Well he's a caring sort of character
24:03I'm sure he'll
24:05Put a sympathetic arm around Dave Jones
24:07On the final whistle knowing that
24:09You know there but for the grace of God
24:11In football
24:14It could have been his team on the end of a hammering
24:16Like this
24:24But it's been a bad day for Southampton
24:27They never got going
24:29They suffered the blow of conceding two goals
24:32Inside the first five minutes
24:34They've never recovered from that
24:36And they have been soundly
24:38And emphatically beaten here
24:41A double strike
24:43Inside those opening five minutes
24:45By Duncan Ferguson
24:47Set Newcastle on the way
24:49To this overwhelming victory
24:51A final scoreline at St James' Park
24:53Of Newcastle United 5
24:55Southampton 0
24:57So an impressive attacking performance
24:59By Newcastle amid scenes of jubilation
25:01The victory lifted them to 13th place
25:04But the team only climbed another two positions
25:06To finish 11th that year
25:08It proved to be Dave Jones' penultimate game
25:10In charge of Southampton
25:12Before he departed on compassionate leave
25:14Pending a court case
25:16Former England manager Glen Hoddle
25:18Took over at the helm
25:20Southampton continued with their yearly relegation battle
