00:30COMM COMMS Straight out of the 1960s cartoon, this incredible
00:37Mach 5 speed racer is the handiwork of car customiser Jerry Patrick.
00:41JERRY PATRICK The Mach 5 started off as a 94 Corvette, a
00:44really nice 94 Corvette and we kind of destroyed it for lack of a better word. The whole back
00:51of the car and front of the car was totally taken off. We fibreglassed the new body back
00:57on it and it takes about 90-120 days to complete one. We gut the interior, put the correct
01:04red leather interior inside, obviously custom paint, custom decals, the emblems, the steel
01:11wheels in fact on it, we custom make them here in house.
01:15COMM COMMS The whole process began with Jerry customising
01:17his own cars to Sabon mechanic builds. JERRY PATRICK We started customising the old
01:23school Camaros and Mustangs probably 15 or 20 years ago and that kind of parlayed into
01:28doing the TV and movie cars. I'd say the love of the most is definitely doing the TV and
01:34movie cars. When we go out and do car shows you see gobs of the Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles
01:40but you don't see too many Mach 5 speed racers.
01:42COMM COMMS Growing up with the cartoon as a kid, Jerry
01:45couldn't resist building his own speed racer. JERRY PATRICK The inspiration behind the Mach
01:505 was straight off the cartoon. I'm a 51 year old guy and back in 1967-ish is when
01:56the cartoon came out so I was really enthralled as a kid to watch this and I thought you know
02:01one day I'm going to be driving a Mach 5. The cost of building the Mach 5 is another
02:07one of these classified things and I've got to keep that a big secret from my wife.
02:10COMM COMMS The build also posed some problems for the
02:15veteran customiser. JERRY PATRICK The biggest challenge on building the
02:19Mach 5 was building the first one. We started off with a body that was a sculpt from someone
02:25else and we had to kind of morph it into what we wanted for our own car where it would actually
02:30fit right, look right, do right and now we're actually building our own bodies. When you
02:39hop in the Mach 5 it can just go broil the tires and just go have fun with it just like
02:43you would see in the cartoon. I get asked generally sometimes from some specific questions
02:52on how fast the Mach 5 can go. Let's just say it's unlimited.
