00:00Brazil's President Lula's statements that he hopes Venezuela quickly returns to Mercosur
00:06is being viewed as a positive step for regional integration.
00:09Our correspondent Brian Meyer has more.
00:13While commemorating Bolivia's entry to Mercosur with its President Luis Arce on Tuesday, Brazil's
00:19President Lula da Silva said that he hopes that Venezuela can also quickly return to
00:24the regional trading bloc.
00:26This marks another step forward in relations between the two neighbors, which were severely
00:30damaged after the 2016 parliamentary coup, reaching a low point during the Bolsonaro
00:37presidency.
00:42There was a certain moment within the crisis between Brazil and Venezuela, during the Bolsonaro
00:47presidency, that the possibility of invading Venezuela was seriously considered by the
00:53deep state in Washington under the leadership of Trump.
00:57This is on record.
00:58This was officially announced.
01:00And Bolsonaro offered to facilitate this.
01:03He even offered the use of Brazil's armed forces to pursue that goal.
01:11Immediately after Lula took office in 2023, Brazil reopened its embassy in Venezuela.
01:18That May, President Maduro visited Brazil, and the two leaders agreed on a series of
01:22partnerships including joint operations fighting drug smuggling on their 2,200-kilometer border.
01:29Although some recent comments made by Brazilian officials have caused tension in the Venezuelan
01:34government, relations between the two nations are expected to continue to improve after
01:39the July 28 presidential elections.
01:42Brazil and Venezuela haven't reached the same level they used to have during the Chavez
01:48years.
01:49Of course, it's way better if you take as a benchmark what happened before Lula came
01:54into office.
01:55Of course, they have improved significantly.
01:57Good relations between Brazil and Venezuela are fundamental for strengthening regional
02:02integration in Latin America.
