Relationship Between Diabetes & Kidney Creatinine Levels

Creatinine levels in diabetes

Often diabetic people experience a sudden jump in creatinine levels. Kidney damage due to diabetes progresses through different stages and one important stage is the new onset of hypertension in diabetic people. When the pressure levels are not constantly monitored, this increase in pressure levels will cause a jump in creatinine levels.

Watch Dr. R. Kishor Kumar of Kauvery Hospital, one of the best nephrologists in Salem talk about the relationship between creatinine levels and diabetes management.

00:00Hi, I am Dr. Kishore Kumar, Consultant Nephrologist, Kavari Hospital, Salem.
00:05The common problem that I have with my patients,
00:08the patients who have diabetic kidney disease,
00:11what is the problem?
00:12I take diabetic medicine regularly,
00:14I have consultations,
00:16creatinine is 2.0 in the background,
00:19there is a protein leak in the urine,
00:21I am taking medicine for that.
00:23The sugar level is in control.
00:24But suddenly after 2 months,
00:26the creatinine level jumps from 2.0 to 4.0,
00:30then it reduces.
00:32Why is this happening?
00:33For what reason is this happening?
00:35Is this possible?
00:36We will see that now.
00:37Generally, the kidney damage due to diabetes
00:40will cross various stages.
00:42An important stage in that is,
00:44for a diabetic patient,
00:46hypertension, a new onset hypertension,
00:49that is, pressure is newly formed
00:51in the diabetic kidney disease.
00:55When we miss that stage,
00:57we do not have pressure,
00:58why should we take medicine for pressure?
01:00When we do not follow the pressure regularly,
01:03suddenly the creatinine jumps.
01:05I note this as a very important reason.
01:08The second reason is,
01:09due to diabetes,
01:10the blood vessels in the legs are reduced,
01:13the blood vessels are affected,
01:14small wounds are formed in the leg,
01:16it gets infected,
01:17suddenly the creatinine jumps.
01:19The third reason is,
01:21again because the sugar is out of control,
01:24there is an infection in the urine,
01:26that is, when the urine goes,
01:27irritation occurs,
01:28thinking that we drink less water in the summer,
01:30because of reducing it,
01:32the infection goes up to the kidney and affects the kidney.
01:35So, we see these three reasons as important reasons.
01:39Very important in that is,
01:40when the pressure is found at the right time
01:43and is not controlled,
01:44suddenly the creatinine rises.
01:46So, it is very important for all diabetic kidney disease patients
01:49to regularly monitor their BP at home.
01:53Thank you.
