England remain the nearly men after late Euro 2024 defeat to Spain

00:00It wasn't to be. England, again, bridesmaids here at the Euros. It's a tough one to take,

00:07especially given the way that they got back into the game. England, they looked so steady

00:13for the first half, they managed to keep Spain at bay. Arguably had the better of the chances,

00:19but Spain were the better side all the way through the tournament. They looked the more

00:24convincing team, the better squad they played, the better football. I think you'd be really

00:31pushed to find anyone who didn't feel like Spain deserved to go on and win Euro 2024.

00:38But that doesn't make it any easier to take, considering that England managed to get back

00:43into it the way that they did. I think when Cole Palmer scored that equaliser, it really

00:50felt like England were going to build some momentum and they were going to really kick

00:53on from there. So to have that kick in the teeth from Oyathobor, so late in the day

01:00as well, it looked like it was going to go to extra time. So England would at least have

01:04that 30 minutes to try and get something over the lines, try and make something happen.

01:09It's another nearly-men job for Gareth Southgate and for England. It just feels like they don't

01:17have that little bit extra that they need in order to win a tournament. You look at

01:22the players that were out there today and unfortunately you look at someone like Harry

01:26Kane that has been such a big player for England over the years, he wasn't able to make any

01:32sort of impact on the game. It only really started to change when Ali Watkins entered

01:36the fray and England started to kick on a little bit after that. It's really hard to

01:42take, it's gutting. I think, and I speak for everyone, in this country especially, it feels

01:51like it's a difficult one to deal with considering it's such a close call for England. 58 years

02:00of hurt will become at least 60. We move on. Something's got to change for England in terms

02:06of some of the players in this group for the next tournament. The World Cup that's coming

02:11up in a couple of years' time, there will be a change of the guard of sorts. But that

02:16being said, looking at positives, there are some very, very good young England players

02:20in this side. We've just got to wait and see what happens with the manage now. Cheers.
