00:00What happens if the elevator cables suddenly break?
00:02First, don't panic.
00:04Elevators are actually much safer than you might think.
00:07There is an important safety device in elevators called the speed governor.
00:10It is connected by cables to the elevator car in the shaft and rotates with the speed of the car.
00:16If the elevator cables suddenly break, the car will accelerate downward.
00:20At this moment, the centrifugal weights in the speed governor will be activated,
00:25pulling the trigger latch and breaking the governor rope.
00:28However, relying solely on this cable to stop the car is impossible.
00:32So there is a pair of safety clamps at the bottom of the car designed to work
00:36in conjunction with the speed governor.
00:38These clamps act like large pliers that can tightly grip the guide rails.
00:43They are activated by the sudden halt of the governor rope.
00:46Once activated, they securely grip the guide rails, stopping the falling elevator.
00:51If the safety clamps also fail, don't be too worried.
00:54There are several thick buffer springs in the pit at the bottom of the elevator shaft
00:59that can significantly reduce the impact force,
