The much beloved Pontefract Liquorice Festival was back for 2024. In addition to the usual line-up of exciting market stalls that will be set up throughout the town, HARIBO will be there with some of the nation’s favourites sweets to choose from. Also Yvette Cooper and Tracy Brabin welcomed visitors to the festival to enjoy the Liquorice Parade.

00:15Very much
00:46even despite the weather the weather will not stop us at all. It'll be a
00:50brilliant parade so do look forward to the parade at the starting at the far
00:53end. Thank you to Harry Bow for all the support. Thank you to Wakefield Council
00:58to Denise Jeffries who is here as Wakefield Council leader for all of the
01:03support and thank you to Pontefract Civic Society who organized an amazing
01:07licorice shoots event yesterday. If you go up through the stalls you will not
01:11only find lovely licorice sweets you will find licorice root, you will find
01:15licorice plants, you will find licorice pork pies which are my favorite and also
01:21licorice gin which I can confess Denise and I have already been trying the
01:25licorice gin this morning and that is great too. So please enjoy all things
01:31licorice today. Ultimately this is about us here in Pontefract celebrating our
01:36history. So yeah it's a celebration of licorice and the licorice fields and all
01:41the sweets and so but it's also a celebration of all of our history so
01:45please enjoy our beautiful town, our beautiful heritage. Have a fantastic day
01:49today.
02:03Honestly I can't believe I've been invited to the Pontefract licorice
02:08festival because licorice is absolutely my favorite sweet. So if you see me with
02:14bags and pockets full of licorice don't judge me because it's a really
02:19fantastic sweet. But can I say thank you all for coming out and celebrating this
02:26great festival and also to Haribo the headline sponsor. You'll see the mascot
02:31here. I don't know the young actor that's in that mascot but you're a legend wearing
02:36that all day. Thank you for your service as a mascot. But Haribo have been a
02:42fantastic company for our region 50 years. I had the privilege of going
02:47around the factory and talking to young apprentices and the people that
02:52work there and it's very much a family business and it was a privilege to do so
02:56but also the Pontefract Civic Society what you do for this town is second to
03:02none. Working with really really brilliant and impressive councillors as
03:08you see with Denise and Michelle and so many others. I'm really happy to be here.
03:14I'm delighted about these community festivals with our identity reminding us
03:19you know that community is really important and what a great day.
