00:00As the new European Parliament holds its first plenary session, 720 members are heading to
00:09Strasbourg to start the legislature. Each of them is entitled to a monthly salary of
00:16€8,089 net, coming from the budget of the Parliament. And this is not the only pot of
00:24money MEPs get. A general expenditure allowance of €4,950 is foreseen every month. However,
00:35this amount is halved if they attend fewer than half the plenary sittings in one year,
00:40without proper justification. Then there is a flat rate, some covering accommodation, meals,
00:46and related expenses for each day spent in Brussels or Strasbourg by an MEP,
00:51which is an additional €350. To receive this money, members of Parliament must sign an
00:58attendance register. This makes the total monthly revenue at around €17,000. This
01:03number may vary from month to month. Each MEP also gets €29,557 per month to be used only
01:12to pay parliamentary assistance. Former members are also entitled to a pension when they turn
01:18the age of 63. It is equal to 3.5% of their salary for each full year in office.
01:25World leaders have condemned the assassination attempt of former US president and presumptive
01:40Republican nominee Donald Trump. The attack has led to an outpouring of online support.
01:46The EU's top political figures, such as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen
01:52and EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell, have slammed the political violence,
01:57stating it has no place in democracy. While leaders of Italy, France, Hungary,
02:02and Ukraine are among a slate of European politicians decrying the attack.
02:17A Russian government spokesperson said the assassination attempt was provoked by US
02:26President Joe Biden, claiming his administration tried removing Trump from politics.
02:31Scenes of joy and celebration on the streets of Madrid after Spain beat England 2-1 to win Euro
02:422024. After a cagey first half, Nico Williams put Spain ahead minutes after the break. But
02:50there was tension when Cole Palmer equalised for England mere minutes after coming on for
02:55a substitute. The winning goal snuck in four minutes from full time,
03:00Mikel Oyazabal slotting home to send fans in the Spanish capital delirious.
03:12Pride and joy were the main emotions on the streets of Madrid as fans celebrated a fourth
03:27European Championship title for Spain. Most of Romania's 41 counties have been
03:37subject to a code red for extreme heat as a heat wave continues across the country.
03:42Temperatures in several areas, including the capital Bucharest,
03:47are expected to hit 42 degrees Celsius at the weekend. Doctors advise people to stay
03:53indoors between 11am and 6pm. Forecasters are warning the heat wave
03:59will likely intensify, bringing sweltering temperatures until at least Wednesday.
04:08In the southern Romanian town of Dabuleni, hundreds of watermelons fill trailers and
04:14carts. Some will go to the market for sale, while others will be discarded in the gutter left to
04:20rot. An oversaturation of the fruit has pushed prices down and left farmers in the lurch.
04:37Local growers say that watermelons ripened in the region at the same time,
04:56causing an oversaturated market.
05:07Fruit is being sold for 3.50 lei or 70 euro cents per kilo.
05:14While shoppers enjoy the price, they lament how it will impact growers.
05:18Many locals are hoping that next season will bear more financial fruit.
05:30The Olympic flame was at the centre of attention during Paris' annual military parade for France's
05:38national day, Bastille Day, as the capital prepares just days before the launch of the
05:44Olympic Games. The flame was escorted by 25 torchbearers and cadets. Thousands of soldiers,
05:51sailors, rescuers and medics gathered to march as the Patrouille de France flew over.
05:57The next stops for the flame include Notre Dame Cathedral.
06:06Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said there's no absolute certainty that
06:11the second-in-command of Hamas was killed in an airstrike in southern Gaza on Saturday.
06:17Israel said it had targeted Mohamed Deif in the massive strike on Al-Mawassi,
06:22an area the Israeli military had declared a safe zone.
06:26Local health officials said at least 90 people, including children, were killed.
06:31Hamas rejected the claim that Deif was in the area at the time of the strike.
06:36But Netanyahu said that cracks were starting to appear in the Hamas leadership as it faced
06:41an increasingly intense Israeli military response. Israel launched its campaign in Gaza
06:47after Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel and killed some 1,200 people on October 7.
06:54Since then, Israeli ground offensives and bombardments have killed more than 38,000 people in Gaza.
07:01Deep beneath the streets of Paris is a hidden world. These are Les Caves du Louvre,
07:06an underground network of cellars and tunnels that were built hundreds of years ago for King Louis XIV.
07:13Back in its heyday, the cellars were the home of one of the 21 wine suppliers to the king.
07:19And the subterranean passages were essential for discreetly keeping him supplied.
07:25These tunnels were used to transport wine and other goods.
07:28These days, the wine cellars host wine tasting events and have an ample stock for sale.
07:58France may have got rid of its monarchy, but it's kept its passion for wine.
08:13Last year, it produced an estimated 46 million hectolitres of the stuff,
08:18according to the French Ministry of Agriculture.
08:21Regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne are renowned for their wine production.
08:25But the rest of the world has barely scratched the surface of what France has to offer.
08:46Retail sales of wine in France top 4.6 billion euros a year,
08:51with the average person drinking 47 litres of it, according to the data analysis firm Statista.
08:57These caves may no longer stock royal wine, but they're very much open for business
09:03and have been transformed into a place where
09:05people can come and sample French wines and learn about their history.
09:14Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has presented his case for continued military
09:19support to US governors. He appealed for more military aid at the National Governors'
09:25Association meeting in Salt Lake City. Zelensky said,
09:30we do not ask for your boots on the ground and repeated an appeal for better air defense systems.
09:37His speech came after NATO members agreed on a program to provide reliable military aid to Ukraine.
09:49The atmosphere is absolutely incredible. After Spain have just won and become the European
09:55champions, they are now the team with the most amount of trophies. They have won four
10:00Euros and one World Cup. Unfortunately, the English fans are now going to go home disappointed.
10:07Although they wanted a chance to win the silverware, they are used to pining and
10:12longing for a trophy. It has been 58 years. The gloves came off for both teams after a
10:18tense first half. When the score was 0-0, England managed to equalize the score to 1-1
10:24after Spain scored their first goal just a couple of minutes into the second half
10:29before getting their next goal just a few minutes before the end.
10:34Best moment in my life, honestly. I don't know, I'm crying of happiness. Really happy,
10:39really happy. I have suffered a lot in this match and also with Germany. I cried. I live
10:44in Germany, so for me it's amazing. I'm really happy about it.
10:52Absolutely gutted. He made changes way too late. We could have done this. You know what?
10:59We've all had a great time. Berlin is the friendliest city on the planet. We've had a
11:05great time. We're loving it. Even though we lost the manor, but the manager needs to go.
11:15Unfortunately for the English men's team, they did not follow in the footsteps of their women's
11:20team who took home the Euro trophy a few years ago. New UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined
11:26tens of thousands of British fans in watching the match live from the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
11:32Despite that, the atmosphere in Berlin is incredible. Live sound in Berlin for Euronews.
