00:38Former President Donald Trump back in Bedminster, New Jersey tonight.
00:41But he says he was shot in the ear.
00:43One of his supporters is dead, two more critically injured.
00:46A short time ago, we learned the identity of the gunman.
00:48He is a 20 year old man from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
00:51We begin our begin our team coverage at 11 with Eyewitness News is Jory Rand.
00:55He is here now with all of these late breaking details tonight.
00:58Guys, there was a time not too long ago when these kind of attempts were pretty
01:01common happening every few years, but it has now been decades since we have seen
01:05in the United States an attempt on a president or former president, let alone
01:09one who is running again for the presidency as Donald Trump is.
01:13But today, that violence playing out at a field in Butler County, Pennsylvania,
01:17north of Pittsburgh, the former president surviving that attack.
01:21And just moments ago, Donald Trump's plane landing at Newark International
01:25Airport, where tonight we got our first glimpse of the former president since the
01:29attempt walking down the steps to his plane in New Jersey.
01:33A welcome sight after a potentially extremely dark day in American history.
01:45An assassination attempt on former President Trump at a rally in Butler,
01:49Pennsylvania, multiple shots fired from the roof of a building outside the security
01:53zone. Trump wounded in the ear as Secret Service surrounded the former
01:57president, covering him on stage.
02:00The agent stayed on top of him for a full minute before standing him back up.
02:04Trump apparently losing his shoes in the chaos.
02:08The former president bloodied in the face, then defiantly raising his fist
02:13and shouting to the crowd to passionate applause.
02:16He was then whisked away to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
02:20Three other attendees were also shot.
02:22One of them killed, two others seriously wounded.
02:25And a man in the bleachers, kind of to the right of me in the bleachers, took a gunshot
02:30wound to the head, was killed.
02:34And another woman, I don't know exactly where she was in bleachers.
02:37I think she was either behind me or to the right of me.
02:38She got around in the.
02:41She got hit in the forearm and hand, it looked like.
02:43In the video, Secret Service is seen reacting to the shooting.
02:47The shooter now identified as Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
02:51He was killed on that rooftop by Secret Service snipers.
02:55We're now waiting to see what his motivation was for the attempt.
02:58In a statement, former President Trump writing in part, it is incredible that such an act
03:02can take place in our country.
03:04I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.
03:07I knew immediately that something was wrong and that I heard a whizzing sound shots and
03:10immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.
03:12Now, President Biden reacting to this tonight, calling this sick, this attempt on President,
03:22former President Trump's life and all of this, of course, happening with the Republican National
03:25Convention set to begin on Monday in Milwaukee, the RNC says.
03:29As of now, events will go on as planned.
03:32The White House announcing tonight President Biden did speak with former President Trump,
03:36but they released no details about their conversation.
03:39We of course live in a country with a long history of political assassinations and attempts
03:43from Abraham Lincoln to John F. Kennedy to Robert Kennedy here in Los Angeles.
