00:00:00Well, it took a while, didn't it, to get going but in the end a little bit of messy magic
00:00:06and a good finish from Molina and that means that Argentina lead Netherlands at half-time
00:00:11and if it stays that way they will be in the semi-finals where they will play Croatia.
00:00:17Took a while to get going.
00:00:18Yeah, we didn't have the first shot on target for 33 minutes and that was from Argentina.
00:00:23The best team are leading in this game, been really disappointed in the Netherlands, they've
00:00:27offered nothing in forward positions, their game plan hasn't quite worked, they've tried
00:00:32to find that ball in behind but Argentina are changing their system, it's worked really,
00:00:37really well for them.
00:00:38I see similarities with 1986, Pablo, in the sense that you've got a workman-like team
00:00:44in Argentina, tough, uncompromising, difficult to beat, relying on a bit of magic from a
00:00:50genius.
00:00:51Maradona, Messi.
00:00:52Yeah, I think so.
00:00:55I think we've always been a bit like that with Argentinian teams.
00:00:59We know that we have strong players in defence and in midfield but then we have always that
00:01:05number 10 in the team who really makes the difference for the team and I think Messi
00:01:10is doing this for that team and when I say I'm confident before the game it's because
00:01:16we have Messi on the field and he's the only one who can really make things happen and
00:01:21well, when we talk about this past it wasn't real.
00:01:25He's the one who makes the difference, they absolutely rely on him but he's been delivering
00:01:29in this tournament.
00:01:30Yeah and we said he's been, before the game, he's been making a difference for 15 or so
00:01:32years at a top, top level, the cutting edge of football.
00:01:35He's a fantastic footballer and when it comes to games that need to be defined, he's the
00:01:40one that takes on the responsibilities of that and he enjoys that and he's a phenomenal
00:01:44footballer.
00:01:45You see in this stadium, whenever he gets the ball and whenever he does anything, the
00:01:48whole stadium stands up.
00:01:50It's amazing to see.
00:01:52The change of shape of Argentina, kind of matching up with the Dutch, isn't that good
00:01:57coaching?
00:01:58Yeah, the youngest coach in the tournament going head to head against the most experienced
00:02:01one and he's winning that battle at the minute because we were looking and we expected them
00:02:06to go in with a change of system with five at the back or three at the back and they've
00:02:10done that and they've looked really solid.
00:02:13The Netherlands have not had a shot on target yet, not looked dangerous at all.
00:02:16The job he's done for Argentina over the last few years since he came in is remarkable.
00:02:22People were saying he doesn't have the experience to be an Argentinian coach and all that, but
00:02:27I think all the experience that you have had as a player in the national team is different.
00:02:34It's not day by day, it's just picking the right players and making them feel comfortable
00:02:41and enjoying it and I think that's what he's doing here.
00:02:45He's coaching staff as well, all players as well that have played as well.
00:02:49Neymar wants someone, I think that's what you need for the young players.
00:02:55When you've got those players, they can bring their experience and talk to them.
00:02:59I think that makes a huge difference.
00:03:00I haven't been a lot that lifted the last seats, but mostly when Messi got the ball
00:03:03and the assist for the guy, I mean it's a great finish from Molina, but how do you see
00:03:08that pass?
00:03:09Please explain.
00:03:10Well, the pass defies physics completely, it's a phenomenal pass and it had to be perfect
00:03:15and it was, but here you see, once he gets the ball, the first touch once he gets it
00:03:20is great.
00:03:21As we see it, it comes to him here, great first touch with his right foot.
00:03:26This bit here where he separates himself from Aki and then how he sees this pass, Daley
00:03:32Blin has to get inside Molina there, he doesn't, but the pass was absolutely sublime.
00:03:38Beautiful pass.
00:03:39You'll go on about the pass, which I totally understand, but Molina is the guy that wins
00:03:44that ball on the half way line, then gives it and just watch his first touch, Molina's,
00:03:49I mean the pass is unbelievable.
00:03:51The vision is incredible, the way to pass, everything else, but watch the first touch
00:03:55of Molina there into his path, takes it away from the defender, he knows that if Van Dijk's
00:04:00going to get into him, he's going to have to foul him and it's a wonderful finish.
00:04:04Oh, you said when we were watching it, when watching the replays, how did he see this?
00:04:08How does he see this pass?
00:04:10It's just like everyone else in the stadium is saying, oh no, oh my God, it's just, he's
00:04:14one of those.
00:04:15It's just the weight of the pass, it's always perfect.
00:04:18That's the remarkable thing, isn't it, about him.
00:04:20I've often said about him that it's like he watches the game from above whilst actually
00:04:25playing it himself as well, so he has this vision that is extraordinary.
00:04:30We've done, there's a few bits and every time he gets it, the crowd's lifted, isn't it?
00:04:35Do you know what, he hasn't actually played particularly well, really well, like you'd
00:04:39normally say, Messi's been brilliant, right, but he does little things in the game that
00:04:43other people can't do.
00:04:44And it might just be even just the way he receives the ball, like here, three or four
00:04:47around him, the ball goes, but other people are giving that ball away, right, and he's
00:04:51getting tackled.
00:04:52These little details here, that ball came in at a ridiculous pace, he took it with his
00:04:56studs, there's five of them around him, and he still gives it to a teammate.
00:05:00Other players are definitely giving that ball away.
00:05:02That's the difference really in him to others, isn't it?
00:05:05You know, it's just incredible, it always seems like he walks around the pitch and then
00:05:09his body language is not great and all that, but no, he's always looking for the right
00:05:13space to get the ball and just go from there.
00:05:16But he's so clever, he's so good, obviously, you know, his vision and the quality of the
00:05:22pass is simply amazing.
00:05:24Do you know what we saw today as well, which when you're live, you only really see it when
00:05:28he's live, a couple of times he didn't get given the ball, right, and the look that he
00:05:32gives his teammates.
00:05:33He's a moan, isn't he?
00:05:34He's moaning, saying, listen, give me, that's the moment I needed the ball, give it to me.
00:05:38So there's an underlying kind of aggression and determination that he gives and feeds
00:05:43off to his teammates that you don't necessarily see when you're at home.
00:05:46I mean, a lot of people just talk about goals, don't they, the amount of goals he scored
00:05:49and stuff like that, but it's those other moments that he gives you joy, it's entertainment
00:05:54and he does things you go, wow, all the time.
00:05:58And the good thing about him now, he's 35, he's coming to the end of his career, but
00:06:02he's playing like a playmaker, you know, that makes him also special.
00:06:07He doesn't have the pace to run with the ball and pass, or during the pass players, but
00:06:12he's got the quality to come there, get on the ball and just make some perfect passes.
00:06:16We've not had much joy from Netherlands so far, what's wrong with the way they've set
00:06:21up?
00:06:22No, it hasn't worked.
00:06:23They want to hit Argentina on the break, but that killer pass, that final pass, has just
00:06:27not happened.
00:06:28And this is a good run, actually, from Depay.
00:06:30You go short to go long, you invite the defender to come with you, knowing that you want to
00:06:34go on behind.
00:06:35The defender falls for it, and they get into a good position there, but then you're looking
00:06:41for the little bit of quality to do something different in the box, because it's a good
00:06:45similar thing here.
00:06:46They hit you on the counter-attack, then all of a sudden they spring forward.
00:06:49Again, that final pass is missing.
00:06:52And you've got to give Argentina credit for the way they're handling this and their changes
00:06:58system.
00:06:59Again, he's looking for a better ball in the end.
00:07:00Martinez comes out there really quickly and reads the situation.
00:07:04Gakpo, again, who's changed position slightly, he's come back into the 10 position.
00:07:10He's not had an influence on the game at all.
00:07:13He makes the run.
00:07:14So, something's going to have to change for them in that second half.
00:07:17Just looking at Van Gaal there, what's he going to do in the second half to turn things
00:07:23around?
00:07:24They're going to have to go for it now.
00:07:25They're going to have to come out.
00:07:26They're going to have to come out and play and be on the front foot.
00:07:27He played the ball forward earlier, and I think he was criticised for that a lot at
00:07:30Manchester United.
00:07:31And even some people in the Dutch media have moaned about sometimes it's a bit slow and
00:07:36a bit ponderous the way they play.
00:07:37They need to speed up the play, definitely.
00:07:38I just saw an image of him there on the bench.
00:07:41I know where he got that inspiration from.
00:07:42I don't know whether you've seen this.
00:07:44Have you?
00:07:45Yeah, 2014, remember?
00:07:46There you go.

00:08:4522 strangers are about to play the game of a lifetime, and to hopefully win up to £120,000.
00:08:53They'll work together as a team, completing epic missions.
00:09:00But hidden amongst them are the traitors.
00:09:04It's up to the others to banish them before they become their next victim.
00:09:08I'm not a traitor, I swear on everything.
00:09:10The Traitors.
00:09:11Press red to watch on BBC iPlayer.
00:09:16Let's hear now from the England camp ahead of tomorrow's quarterfinal against France.
00:09:21Jordan Henderson, scorer of the opening goal against Senegal, has been talking to Kelly Summers.
00:09:32Jude Bellingham said after the Senegal game that people needed to put more respect on your name.
00:09:36What did you make of those comments?
00:09:38I'm getting protected by a 19-year-old, I love it.
00:09:46Bellingham gets it across, and Henderson puts it in.
00:09:51I'm not too bothered about what people think of me.
00:09:54There'll be a lot of people that love us for what I do and who I am,
00:09:57and then there'll be a lot of people that hate us for them exact same reasons.
00:10:01The only opinions that matter to me is my teammates,
00:10:04so when my teammates hear something like that, of course it makes us feel good.
00:10:09Talk us through the celebration, it was quite intense.
00:10:13I'm quite intense, to be honest, when I'm playing anywhere.
00:10:16It was probably one of my better celebrations, normally I'm probably swearing and shouting,
00:10:21but it was just the emotion and everything coming out,
00:10:25and, yeah, it was a pretty special moment.
00:10:28Is there a bit of an unlikely bromance occurring here as well?
00:10:32There's a big age gap with bromance.
00:10:34I didn't want to point that out.
00:10:36I know I'm 32, but I'm not really.
00:10:40Deep down I still feel like I'm 23.
00:10:43I get on really well with everyone really, off the pitch as well,
00:10:47and I think that makes a big difference when you're on the pitch.
00:10:50On to France then.
00:10:55How do the players view a meeting with the current World Cup holders?
00:10:58It's a huge test, but one that you've got to do.
00:11:02It's a huge test, but one that you've got to look forward to.
00:11:05We've just got to go out there and give it absolutely everything.
00:11:08We've showed what we're capable of,
00:11:11but it's about producing on the biggest stage against the biggest teams,
00:11:14and France is certainly that.
00:11:16And we'll need a beat at 100 per cent for the whole game if we have any chance of winning.
00:11:21You made your debut for England 12 years ago, what's different about this squad?
00:11:25Togetherness.
00:11:27Russia 2018 was a close group, but even more so now,
00:11:31with everything that we've been through together in the past few years,
00:11:34and I think that makes us stronger as a team.
00:11:37Hopefully we can use that to be better and go even further.
00:11:41Can you quite believe how the narrative has changed around England
00:11:44during your 12 years in the set-up,
00:11:46and how the conversation has changed around England?
00:11:49It's changed a lot, if I look back, definitely.
00:11:52When I first went in, a lot of big players coming towards the end of their career.
00:11:56Now you look at the squad, it's a totally different way of playing,
00:11:59a different feeling about it.
00:12:03I've been part of the not-so-good and the pretty good so far.
00:12:09You've won it all at club level, you've come so close with England,
00:12:13what would it mean to you to win one this year?
00:12:15Everything.
00:12:18You know, it's everyone's dream.
00:12:21I don't think you can focus too far ahead.
00:12:23If you don't win Saturday, then you get nowhere near.
00:12:26It's all about France, and the focus has got to be on winning that game,
00:12:31and that's all the concentration needs to be on.
00:12:36I'll tell you what it means, it means footballing immortality.
00:12:39It's special, and he's played a great part in this World Cup.
00:12:42They talk about perhaps the lack of respect towards Jordan Henderson,
00:12:45but I don't think that should ever be the case.
00:12:48He's a remarkable footballer, and he seems to be a wonderful human being.
00:12:51The good thing about Jordan is that he doesn't listen to the outside noise,
00:12:55good and bad. When it's going great, that's fine.
00:12:57When it's not so, it doesn't bother him.
00:12:59He's done it all and seen it all, so he's experienced as they come.
00:13:02And when you've got so many youngsters in the England squad,
00:13:06they can look up to him and the great pro that he is.
00:13:09He's a manager's dream, because you know what you're going to get from him.
00:13:11He's not going to fiddle with that midfield, do you think, Rio?
00:13:14No chance.
00:13:15He won't switch to five at the back?
00:13:16I don't think so.
00:13:17I think we go from being slight favourites to slight outsiders.
00:13:20I think the reason why he's in there is, one, he's a good player,
00:13:23he's a leader, and he takes responsibility.
00:13:26And I think that right-hand side area that he sits in,
00:13:28he does a fabulous job there for Liverpool.
00:13:30He helped Trent Alexander-Arnold when he was in the Liverpool shirt,
00:13:33and he'll do the same with Mbappé and Kyle Walker,
00:13:35which is, I think, a key battle in the game.
00:13:37It would be nice to see an Argentina-England final, wouldn't it?
00:13:40Get ahead of myself, of course.
00:13:42And I know it's the hope.
00:13:44It wouldn't suit anything.
00:13:46Argentina shirt, England shirt.
00:13:49Let's do it properly.
00:13:54Well, the Dutch are out on the field.
00:13:56The Argentinians haven't come out yet.
00:13:58They'll be certainly the most satisfied at half-time.
00:14:00Here they come.
00:14:02We think the Dutch have made a couple of substitutions.
00:14:04It looks like there they are on the side.
00:14:06So I think we'll leave Jonathan Pearce and Martin Keown to explain all that.
00:14:14Thank you very much, Gary.
00:14:15We'll do the hard work out here, then, in the stadium for you.
00:14:18Tune Koopmeijners comes on into midfield, and Steven Berghaus as well.
00:14:22The players who've gone off are Duron and Steven Bergwijn.
00:14:27We've just seen a picture of him down in the dugout.
00:14:29He's absolutely disconsolate.
00:14:31Now, Koopmeijners is a midfield player,
00:14:34and plays for Atalanta.
00:14:37Very intelligent midfield player, very game-intelligent midfield player,
00:14:41certainly a young man.
00:14:42And Steven Berghaus has moved deeper as his career has gone on.
00:14:46The Ajax player was very much a forward,
00:14:49and has been dropped into a midfield role,
00:14:52started the World Cup, and was dropped after the first game.
00:14:56Another two changes, and off we go in the second half
00:15:00with Argentina and the pale blue and white shirts
00:15:04and the white shorts against the Netherlands, all in orange.
00:15:08And they are defending the goal away to your right-hand side.
00:15:11I would say it's the Argentina end of the ground
00:15:15as far as the fans are concerned, because all four sides here
00:15:19are dominated by Argentina supporters.
00:15:22What are your thoughts on the two substitutes, Martin?
00:15:24Well, they had to do something, the manager.
00:15:27Berghaus coming on to play, I think, just off the front.
00:15:31I think Gakpo will go into the top two.
00:15:34So a slight change there, he offers a bit more pace,
00:15:37hasn't done a great deal in the game, as the fellas were saying at half-time.
00:15:41And then a change in midfield as well,
00:15:43so let's just see if they change their performance now, second half.
00:15:46And they have to change it in the opening game against Senegal,
00:15:49where Gakpo did not succeed in the deeper role.
00:15:52He moved him up front to start the Ecuador game,
00:15:55he scored, started the Qatar game in a more forward role,
00:15:59and he scored again.
00:16:01Looks like Aki as well, he's a very advanced role,
00:16:04I don't know if he's picking up Messi,
00:16:06that's what he wants to do, they've got to think about trying to win it,
00:16:09but they want to keep an eye on him as well, of course.
00:16:17Molina, the goal scorer.
00:16:19Lionel Messi with the creativity to set up that goal,
00:16:24wonderful reverse pass.
00:16:26We've been oohing and aahing about it, watching it in the half-time interval.
00:16:29Here he is again.
00:16:32It's back again to Messi.
00:16:34The shimmy that took him away from his man,
00:16:36outwired then to Acuna with the reverse cross back in,
00:16:40that got the deflection off Denzel Dumfries.
00:16:43Corner kick Argentina.
00:16:46Acuna starts the second half as he finished the first,
00:16:49running down that left-hand side.
00:16:56These moments are brilliant though, isn't it?
00:16:58From Messi.
00:17:01Quite outstanding.
00:17:08What a ball for Argentina.
00:17:14First in the game.
00:17:18Rez is in on the goalkeeper,
00:17:20Callas is in there with that little touch on.
00:17:25What a role he performs at his club that, to win that ball in that area.
00:17:31Fernandez.
00:17:37He has the skill to go on and be a breathtaking international.
00:17:40He's only 21 years of age.
00:17:42Two tucks of the line, perhaps, for that trick.
00:17:47Good battle between these two.
00:17:49He's just not got enough pace to beat him.
00:17:55One saga, will he, won't he?
00:17:57Move from Barcelona de Jong.
00:17:59I think it's inevitable that the Premier League team will pick him up.
00:18:05Not a great club, of course, at the moment.
00:18:07Here's Depay.
00:18:10Did really well, and then was it too much on the ball, the little wriggle?
00:18:13What a free kick.
00:18:14Could he paint the ball down the line?
00:18:16Well, I'm sure it was exactly the pass that was needed.
00:18:18I just think maybe it was a bit of showboating.
00:18:20He's cleared that passing lane,
00:18:23and then tries to throw his foot over it,
00:18:25and then he gets fouled, of course.
00:18:28Down for the World Cup, wasn't he?
00:18:30Praying that he'd be fit.
00:18:31He was out from late September.
00:18:33Picked up a hamstring injury at Poland.
00:18:37Sandro Martinez cuts it away.
00:18:46Dumfries.
00:18:48Gappo.
00:18:50Of course, looking for Depay.
00:18:52Easily dealt with by Emiliano Martinez.
00:18:57Depay.
00:19:04You can see what he's trying to do there, but it's very difficult.
00:19:06He's been well-marshaled in the box there.
00:19:08Depay.
00:19:13One-on-one by Van Dijk.
00:19:16Blint.
00:19:21Right here, then, two in-court minders.
00:19:24Yeah, midfield player.
00:19:28He had his debut a couple of years ago.
00:19:30Kutmajnov.
00:19:33At Berghaus.
00:19:36Dumfries trying to get beyond Acuna.
00:19:38He's done really well, hasn't he?
00:19:40Acuna there.
00:19:41He's winning that battle right now.
00:19:45I thought he should have had a free-kick there, Marcos Acuna,
00:19:47but nothing given.
00:19:51He has been booked.
00:19:54You only know he's missing
00:19:56the semi-final suspended.
00:19:58What he doesn't want to do is take Argentina down to ten men.
00:20:03They have a very good understudy in that position in Telefico.
00:20:08Who knows so many of these Dutch players so very, very well.
00:20:11As does Martinez.
00:20:12He played with eight of them at Ajax.
00:20:13Martinez.
00:20:14Lissandro Martinez, that is.
00:20:16There's McAllister.
00:20:18Messy with the touch back.
00:20:19They've got a great understanding.
00:20:22Yeah, he does, doesn't he?
00:20:23Dovetails really well, McAllister.
00:20:26As Messy comes deep, he pops into that front line.
00:20:29Very difficult to play against these two.
00:20:32Of course, Messy is on another level, by the way,
00:20:34but McAllister is playing very well in this competition.
00:20:39Messy was already a young man at the Masia training ground
00:20:42when McAllister was toddling.
00:20:46He's to pull.
00:20:47Looking for Messy.
00:20:48Goalkeeper's come and got there and won the race.
00:20:56Messy, Messy.
00:20:57He wanted a better ball there, of course.
00:20:58Too much pace on that one.
00:21:01Gatberg.
00:21:02Van Dijk.
00:21:04To Bergkous.
00:21:12He did well in the opening game against Senegal,
00:21:15but when they moved Cody Gatberg to a forward position,
00:21:17he lost out to...
00:21:21Lost out at his place in the team.
00:21:24Taken by David Klaassen.
00:21:27Thought he might turn to Klaassen, but he hasn't done that.
00:21:33This is Depay.
00:21:35Desperate to influence the game.
00:21:36Ran away from him and tried to pull back.
00:21:40McAllister still chasing there.
00:21:43Look how he protects the ball there, McAllister.
00:21:45Gets his body in between his opponent.
00:21:47Depay's a strong man and he was able to hold him off there.
00:21:51Brighton bought him for 8 million from Argentinos Juniors.
00:21:54They could sell him for 50.
00:21:57That's the way they do business, of course, that football club.
00:22:02Very successful way are we then.
00:22:14Interesting to hear the interviews at half time with the England boys
00:22:17and good luck to them, of course, tomorrow against France.
00:22:19They'll probably be listening tonight.
00:22:21I'll second that, Jonathan.
00:22:26They've been at a World Cup with England.
00:22:27What will they be thinking tonight at that hotel, Martin?
00:22:30I think they'll be enjoying the games in front of them.
00:22:32It's a good opportunity to see the quarter-finalists go first
00:22:35and they know what's ahead of them now.
00:22:39They're up.
00:22:41It'll be a cracker tomorrow night, that's for sure.
00:22:43Sensational.
00:22:50What a man.
00:22:56Potential weakness because of his age.
00:22:58I guess he's 34 now but he's had such a strong World Cup.
00:23:01Goes in with a challenge there.
00:23:02The one, Berghaus.
00:23:03Here's Gakpo.
00:23:04Opportunity for De Jong around the corner.
00:23:06Blint.
00:23:08Couldn't beat the first man with a cross.
00:23:09Well, there was a clear free at the far post,
00:23:12which he certainly was trying to get it to.
00:23:19Is the game just turning the Netherlands' way, Martin?
00:23:22Well, it needs to.
00:23:23They just need to move the ball much more quickly, more incisively.
00:23:30De Jong van Dijk.
00:23:36De Jong.
00:23:41Koopmanis keeps it going, keeps it moving.
00:23:45It's the fourth substitute appearance of these finals.
00:23:48Here's Ake.
00:23:56Koopmanis, he will play in that deep role.
00:24:05Steered out by Alexandre Martinez.
00:24:07And Argentina have done that very well.
00:24:10Not bad.
00:24:12He got away with it.
00:24:13Depop.
00:24:15Trying to find Molina.
00:24:16Would have been away.
00:24:18Is that handball again?
00:24:19Handball against Messi.
00:24:24He gets away with it though, doesn't he?
00:24:26He's not going to book him.
00:24:30Van Dijk's asking that question.
00:24:33A wry smile.
00:24:34Because he knows why he wasn't booked.
00:24:36Because he's Lionel Messi.
00:24:37Well, he's got a halo around his head.
00:24:39We know he's a footballing god, so he gets away with everything.
00:24:48Dumfries back to Jürgen Timber.
00:24:54Van Dijk.
00:25:00Steers it through to Gakpo and off it goes again.
00:25:04Koopmanis have made a good run inside right position.
00:25:08De Jong is still sitting quite deep.
00:25:10Koopmanis, he thought he might have sat deeper.
00:25:14To allow De Jong to go forward and then Van Dijk can come out with the ball.
00:25:20Still very structured here.
00:25:26Frenkie De Jong.
00:25:28Timber has it once again.
00:25:32Actually cut out by Artemendy.
00:25:33First man to the ball here repeatedly is a man in an orange shirt.
00:25:39Frenkie De Jong.
00:25:40His 50th international for his country.
00:25:45He is carrying again.
00:25:46No one carried the ball more than him in European qualifying.
00:25:51Qualified in fine style.
00:25:55Here's De Jong.
00:25:57Here's De Jong.
00:26:03Berghaus to Frankie De Jong or rather it's Koopmanis.
00:26:07Koopmanis off to Jürgen Timber.
00:26:11It's just steady in position again.
00:26:12This is how they started the game, aren't they?
00:26:15They're comfortable, but actually Argentina are just soaking up everything.
00:26:18And as you say, battling, working really hard for one another.
00:26:22Look at this fan again.
00:26:24Off it goes of Kunja.
00:26:27Up and back, up and back.
00:26:28He plays the game 100 miles an hour as does the other fullback by the way.
00:26:32It's a cool evening here by the way.
00:26:34Conditions perfect for football.
00:26:39Almost as cool as an early September evening is back at home for football.
00:26:43It's going to rain here tomorrow apparently for the England game.
00:26:47A sprinkle yesterday.
00:26:57Here's Van Dijk.
00:27:04Depay coming short.
00:27:06Very quickly though is Alessandro Martinez.
00:27:09Depay is giving that ball away far too many times.
00:27:19McAllister.
00:27:21Alessandro Martinez.
00:27:23Away by Otamendi.
00:27:27Three times he was close to winning the Copa America.
00:27:33Eventually won it in 21.
00:27:34This man on the ball now.
00:27:40A bit of a Marmite figure wasn't he in English football?
00:27:43Manchester City managers have loved him and he won plenty there.
00:27:50I thought we'd seen the best of him, but now he's
00:27:53getting very close to a semi-final of the World Cup.
00:28:00Incidentally in qualifying and coming together with Rafinha.
00:28:03So Rafinha needed various stitches.
00:28:06Too sure he even got a yellow card in it.
00:28:07It was astonishing.
00:28:08Here's Van Dijk.
00:28:12Dumfries was the furthest forward Dutch player by a country mile.
00:28:16I think that's what they need to do.
00:28:17A bit more variation there.
00:28:18Long ball finally from Van Dijk.
00:28:23Berghaus infield to Frankie de Jong.
00:28:28Bit of a gap opened up in front of him.
00:28:29Up by Koopmeijners and up by that man Otamendi again.
00:28:34Messi.
00:28:36Brilliant lead-up.
00:28:39McAllister.
00:28:40Default.
00:28:41Oh the ball was just too wide for him.
00:28:43Cech gets it back.
00:28:44Slipped at the same time.
00:28:45Ake tries to bring it away.
00:28:47What are two players starting to slip?
00:28:49Well it's opening up, Jonathan, because the Dutch are trying to get out.
00:28:52And Argentina, they're exploiting those spaces on the counter-attack.
00:29:01That ball was better from McAllister there to De Paul.
00:29:04He was in surely with a shot on goal.
00:29:09Otamendi.
00:29:12Cooney had to backtrack and get there.
00:29:14He won't mind that.
00:29:15Got some engine on him.
00:29:20Croatia await the winners.
00:29:22Having beaten Brazil on penalties earlier on.
00:29:32Took a bit of a risk there, Otamendi.
00:29:36Sandro Martinez.
00:29:37Very secure, that pass through.
00:29:46De Jong.
00:29:48It's Cooney Gatbrook.
00:29:49Looking.
00:29:50Too much pace on the ball there to De Jong.
00:29:53But he's didn't give him a chance.
00:29:54No.
00:29:55He's quick, but not that quick.
00:30:00It's Messi again.
00:30:02One of his little cameos that he has.
00:30:07This is the pass, isn't it?
00:30:08Just too much weight on it.
00:30:11De Paul there would have hit that one.
00:30:14From the edge of the box, but he's force-wide.
00:30:17I mentioned they qualified in style, the Netherlands.
00:30:19They have more shots and touches in the opposition box than any other country in Europe.
00:30:23And yet here at the World Cup finals, they've been conservative.
00:30:29Certainly now need to be more adventurous.
00:30:31Here's Messi.
00:30:32Brilliant.
00:30:33What a World Cup he's having.
00:30:34What a World Cup that man is having.
00:30:41Noel Molina.
00:30:43De Paul.
00:30:45Messi.
00:30:47Withstanding the challenge.
00:30:48Sees the gap.
00:30:49Tried to wriggle into it.
00:30:51And drew the foul.
00:30:55It looks as if Van Dijk's just pushed him to the floor.
00:30:57Change of pace.
00:30:59Look.
00:31:00Shoves him over.
00:31:02But he just seems to energise his colleagues around him.
00:31:06And this vociferous crowd.
00:31:08That's mostly from Argentina.
00:31:11Almost the whole of Argentina are here tonight.
00:31:15Bowing down to him in that stand behind the goal moments ago.
00:31:21You'll fancy this as well.
00:31:38Breathing hard.
00:31:39Might have been winded by the challenge or the foul.
00:31:45Most of the powerful shots we've seen here at this World Cup.
00:31:49Harry Kane right down the bottom.
00:31:59Messi has the ball in his hats.
00:32:05Van Dijk telling them they need to be strong and stay together.
00:32:10Andries Nopper lining up that wall.
00:32:12Has to be absolutely precise.
00:32:14Because.
00:32:16Messi can find an inch of exposed goal.
00:32:24Messi.
00:32:25Goodness me.
00:32:30So close.
00:32:31Rippled the net.
00:32:32Backstanching.
00:32:34Wonderful effort.
00:32:35How on earth has he got it that close?
00:32:37Ridiculous.
00:32:44Now Depay.
00:32:461-0.
00:32:47Fragile lead.
00:32:49Skyed poorly that.
00:32:52It was a mistake by Otamendi.
00:32:56And Kunja has it back.
00:33:08Now McAllister.
00:33:12De Paul.
00:33:18Made Messi too much to do.
00:33:20Yeah, Messi was angry there.
00:33:22Just a simple pass.
00:33:26His goal here against Mexico.
00:33:29Wasn't the best goal in this World Cup.
00:33:31Fine goal.
00:33:32Really fine goal.
00:33:33But I think it could be worse.
00:33:36But I think it could be one of the most important goals of the World Cup finals.
00:33:39Off the back of that opening defeat.
00:33:41He was so close here.
00:33:42He was.
00:33:43And he's trying to whip that into the opposite corner.
00:33:45That you'd expect.
00:33:46I think Blint.
00:33:48He's gone down here.
00:33:49He's going to be substituted.
00:33:57Well.
00:33:58Andy Blint here has gone off.
00:33:59And Luke de Jong.
00:34:02The centre forward has come on.
00:34:06He had a rather unhappy injury hit spell at Newcastle on loan.
00:34:10Back in 2013-14.
00:34:15He's been around the Dutch squad for 11 years.
00:34:17But has 8 goals in his 38 games.
00:34:19Not prolific.
00:34:20No, he might have a change of system here.
00:34:22Looks like a back four now for the Dutch.
00:34:29Will he readjust?
00:34:30Luke de Jong's gone up front.
00:34:31Depay and Gakpo just off him.
00:34:36Ake's come out to left-back.
00:34:37There's a gap immediately opened up here.
00:34:41Depay.
00:34:42Acuna is arriving.
00:34:45McAllister in a bit of space out wide.
00:34:48Here's Enzo Fernandez.
00:34:55And there is de Jong.
00:35:00Don't hold the ball up very well here at the Netherlands.
00:35:03De Jong there losing it.
00:35:04Just coming off the bench.
00:35:06There is a change here though.
00:35:08From Argentina.
00:35:09Ferreres is going to come on.
00:35:11They're on loan from PSG at Juve.
00:35:16One shy of 50 internationals for his country.
00:35:18It will be now.
00:35:21Molina.
00:35:22Has given that away.
00:35:23Got very scrappy here Martin.
00:35:25He certainly has.
00:35:26Ferreres.
00:35:31Ferreres is a defensive midfield player.
00:35:35Really.
00:35:36He can play further up.
00:35:39He's defensive midfield capabilities.
00:35:43It's De Paul who's going to depart.
00:35:44Now he was a doubt for this.
00:35:45He did have a muscle problem.
00:35:48Tried to paper over that yesterday.
00:35:51Asking the journalist to ask a question about De Paul's fitness.
00:35:54How do you know he's injured?
00:35:55Well, it was a bit of an open secret.
00:36:00Well I do know that he's been very good in this tournament.
00:36:03He's had another good evening tonight.
00:36:06He's hoping that his colleagues can get him over the line.
00:36:11Might mean that Enzo Fernandez can push on a little bit.
00:36:14Ferreres will sit in front of his back three.
00:36:25Franky de Jong.
00:36:26They are not out of this, the Dutch.
00:36:2966 minutes gone.
00:36:34Franky de Jong.
00:36:35Around the corner to Timba.
00:36:47High and away for Gatto to touch back to Nathan Ake.
00:36:52Ferreres has left back many times.
00:36:56You just look at that front line now for the Dutch.
00:36:59And you've got one, two, three, five players.
00:37:02Really high up the pitch.
00:37:08Van Dijk.
00:37:13Can't get away with coat-minors.
00:37:16Argentina semi-finalists in 19, 30, 86, 19, 90 and 20, 40.
00:37:23Coming through from three of their seven World Cup quarter-finals.
00:37:32First quarter-final defeat was against England back in 66.
00:37:35You'll remember that stormy affair last week.
00:37:38First quarter-final defeat was against England back in 66.
00:37:41You'll remember that stormy affair last week.
00:37:44Martin was probably there.
00:37:46Here's Franky de Jong.
00:37:48He's unlucky there.
00:37:49He travelled really well with the ball.
00:37:53Depay is now playing just off the front, looking to try and link.
00:38:01Timba went down.
00:38:02Timba went down.
00:38:06He had talked back in for an early offence.
00:38:10Van Dijk has it.
00:38:19Into the last quarter of the game.
00:38:26Franky de Jong.
00:38:29Busy on the ball but productive enough for you, Martin.
00:38:31Well, it's just about going forward with it, isn't it?
00:38:33You have to keep coming back all the time and sideways.
00:38:37Dumfries, by the way, is playing almost as a right-winger right now.
00:38:41Nathan Ake.
00:38:43Don't try the little flip, but Molino was aware it was coming.
00:38:48An occasional winch to score your first international goal.
00:38:52Going through really strong in qualifying to book that right-back berth.
00:38:57It's a formidable looking back five for Argentina at the moment.
00:39:00Can the Netherlands find a way through in towards de Jong?
00:39:03Out by Romero.
00:39:07Depay underneath it and there's a push.
00:39:11The referee's spotted it.
00:39:12The decision goes against Koopmanis.
00:39:20Let me remind you, the Dutch unbeaten in 19 games since Louis van Gaal began his third stint as coach.
00:39:27And they've lost just two of 44 competitive fixtures under him.
00:39:33No defeats in their last 36 competitive games.
00:39:40It's the Alba Celeste of Argentina at the moment who hold the semi-final place.
00:39:49Alvarez.
00:39:57And it draws to the effort of Molino to keep it in play.
00:40:07But he's not getting forward as much in this second half, but he doesn't really need to.
00:40:10But when he can, he does.
00:40:16There he goes.
00:40:17Van Dijk had to get across.
00:40:27McAllister.
00:40:32It's Acuna.
00:40:33Berghaus looks sluggish there.
00:40:37Oh, brilliant.
00:40:38Oh, he's brought down.
00:40:39Penalty kick has to be.
00:40:40Has to be.
00:40:42Listen to the roar.
00:40:50Got suckered into it.
00:40:52Yeah, there's the contact.
00:40:54Dumfries.
00:40:55There can be no argument.
00:40:58He's just inside the box.
00:41:00Acuna.
00:41:01On this left-hand side.
00:41:03He talked about the quality of their wing-backs.
00:41:05Another one getting forward again.
00:41:08Messi will step up to do the honours.
00:41:13Well, he missed one, didn't he?
00:41:14He scored one, though, as well.
00:41:16He did in the opening game against Saudi Arabia.
00:41:18This is the 17th penalty of these World Cup finals.
00:41:20Five have been missed.
00:41:28And the referee's going to come out here and have a word
00:41:30with Andries Snoppe.
00:41:32The giant in the Dutch goal,
00:41:34who's saved one penalty in the six he's faced.
00:41:39Here's the history of Messi's 26.
00:41:42Five of them have not gone in.
00:41:44Well, he's six foot eight.
00:41:46And he's got a wingspan of about 2.2 metres, Jonathan.
00:41:51So, is that going to count for anything against the great Messi?
00:41:58He does miss a few, though.
00:42:00He's to level Batistuta on ten World Cup goals for Argentina.
00:42:06He'll be the joint highest scorer for his country.
00:42:09For Argentina.
00:42:11He'll be the joint highest scorer for his country.
00:42:14The finals.
00:42:18A tepid penalty he took the other night.
00:42:22This to send them a giant step towards the last four
00:42:27of Qatar 2022.
00:42:30Little man
00:42:32against the Dutch giant.
00:42:36It's Messi.
00:42:37It's two.
00:42:41It's his tournament.
00:42:43Is it written in the stars?
00:42:45England will hope not.
00:42:46But this little man is irresistible.
00:43:07Well, he just keeps producing
00:43:10through this World Cup.
00:43:13And this is a really quality penalty.
00:43:17And let me tell you, he's under pressure.
00:43:20It's another look at the penalty.
00:43:22Dumfries has been outstanding in this competition, but not there.
00:43:27The goalkeeper having a word.
00:43:28Whatever he said, it didn't make any difference.
00:43:30Just look at this for a pen.
00:43:32Wow.
00:43:35Whips it across him.
00:43:38So assured.
00:43:46He is in the top form right now, isn't he?
00:43:49His confidence, his belief.
00:43:52And it just flows through his colleagues, his teammates.
00:43:56Won everything at club level he could.
00:43:58He's won an Olympic gold.
00:44:00He's won the Copa America.
00:44:01This is the one that he needs.
00:44:04As Martinez comes and gathers.
00:44:08Lionel Messi has now scored four
00:44:10and assisted two of Argentina's nine goals.
00:44:14And Luke de Jong here getting involved in words
00:44:16with Emiliano Martinez.
00:44:18Well, Martinez there, I have to say,
00:44:19that's brilliant goalkeeping.
00:44:22Because he's just come and done his job.
00:44:23He's just taken that cross beautifully.
00:44:27I don't think they like, do they,
00:44:28the physicality of that.
00:44:29But you just need to get this game to calm down a little bit.
00:44:35Acuna is right in the thick of it.
00:44:36He needs to get away.
00:44:40Still in there arguing.
00:44:42Dumfries in there as well.
00:44:52Came out and gathered it.
00:44:54He didn't like the challenge on him
00:44:55and there were words between the two.
00:44:58No, but there's no final sight
00:44:59if you're a central defender
00:45:00and your goalkeeper comes and takes a ball like that.
00:45:06What you're not seeing,
00:45:09they're not showing it on the cameras for you,
00:45:11is there is an on-pitch protester
00:45:13being hauled away right now.
00:45:14That's what the delay is.
00:45:15You're seeing them looking across.
00:45:20It's been smothered by security guards.
00:45:22Five on one there, is it?
00:45:37Eventually we get going again.
00:45:40And the rules from the Argentina fans can start again.
00:45:46Memphis Depay was the man who was yellow-guarded after all that.
00:45:50If you're a Dutch fan,
00:45:51you're still waiting for an attempt at goal here.
00:45:54For all their quality of passing.
00:45:56This man hasn't been tested really at all tonight.
00:45:59I think Argentina would do well to get Acuna out of there now.
00:46:03He's had a terrific game,
00:46:05but they've got Taliafico,
00:46:07or they're warming up Taliafico now.
00:46:08I think he's going to come on in a minute.
00:46:11Got Koko in behind.
00:46:13How has he fouled there?
00:46:14He looks at the Spanish referee.
00:46:24Thirteen and a half minutes to go.
00:46:26Football fans,
00:46:3388,235.
00:46:37In a stadium that holds 88,966.
00:46:42It is nearly another sell-out here.
00:46:45This stadium is responsible for the eight highest crowds at the World Cup.
00:46:5097%.
00:46:52And more tickets have been sold.
00:46:54Martínez is the latest book.
00:47:02Vercors is going to come on for the Dutch.
00:47:05Sunder forwards.
00:47:07Time is tight.
00:47:08Petzela is going to come on for Argentina.
00:47:10Acuna will go off for Taliafico.
00:47:17And Cristian Romero is going to go off
00:47:19and be replaced by the man Petzela.
00:47:22Sunder back.
00:47:24This is where the very fabric of games break down
00:47:31because of all the substitutions.
00:47:38Off goes Romero.
00:47:45Petzela, his second appearance in the finals,
00:47:48played 12 minutes against Poland.
00:47:51He's the best defender in the air.
00:47:54He's 6'3".
00:47:56The tie is gone for Vercors.
00:47:59Now they've got Luuk de Jong and Vercors on.
00:48:02He's 6'6", the former Burnley player,
00:48:04and Luuk de Jong is 6'2".
00:48:06So they're going to launch it, it would seem, Martínez.
00:48:08So it seems they've made that change, haven't they, Argentina?
00:48:10You say they've put their best head of the ball on.
00:48:14Petzela.
00:48:15Petzela.
00:48:22Sensible change, Taliafico on for Acuna.
00:48:24What do you make of that?
00:48:25I think so, they're pretty much light for light.
00:48:27Taliafico is a decent player as well.
00:48:31Acuna deserves to be number one.
00:48:33He won't feature, as you say, if they get through this game
00:48:35in the next round.
00:48:37Pep has come out to the left-hand side now
00:48:41for the Netherlands.
00:48:42Gets that cross in, looking for the little touch on by Vercors.
00:48:48Seems to be the ploy, doesn't it?
00:48:49Get the ball wide, get lots of crosses in.
00:48:56Just not creating anything.
00:49:00Never beaten the Netherlands in 90 minutes
00:49:03in World Cup football.
00:49:04They might have a chance here if the ball goes through.
00:49:08Foul given against Vercors.
00:49:13Yeah, very much so.
00:49:14He's got his arms all over his opponent there.
00:49:19Doesn't need to do that.
00:49:22Neither of the substitute centre-forwards
00:49:25have been prolific in 56 games for their country.
00:49:28Together they've managed 11 goals.
00:49:35I'm not sure these are the popular changes
00:49:38back in the 90s.
00:49:39Popular changes
00:49:41back in the Netherlands.
00:49:45Seems to have got worse with the changes rather than better.
00:49:50Every press conference he's been to here
00:49:53he's had to defend himself.
00:49:56Coach of the Netherlands.
00:49:59Brilliantly done.
00:50:01Here's McAllister.
00:50:03Opportunity here to finish the game.
00:50:05Tagliafico.
00:50:06Grabbed by Knopper.
00:50:08Messi was involved again there.
00:50:13Moments of brilliance from him.
00:50:20I think he's played a mature role for them here, Alvarez.
00:50:23Not just in this game but in the last couple starting.
00:50:26Well, his movement's excellent.
00:50:28We know that. He can finish.
00:50:30He's worked great for the team.
00:50:33I think he's a good addition.
00:50:34That was a stonking challenge, wasn't it?
00:50:36By Enzo Fernandez.
00:50:38Not according to the referee.
00:50:40Or was it already given it for the earlier one?
00:50:43No, he's a little bit over the ball there, isn't he?
00:50:50Here comes another change for Argentina.
00:50:53Lataro Martinez is going to come on for the man we've just been praising there.
00:50:57Here you are, guys.
00:50:58Listen to the applause, though, from the Argentina fans.
00:51:01They love the Manchester City fans.
00:51:04They really have.
00:51:07He's a fantastic prospect.
00:51:10Pep Guardiola's been telling us about him all season.
00:51:12He's now fulfilling that potential.
00:51:15Even this man who's coming on the bench.
00:51:18He'd be looking to score, Jonathan, as well.
00:51:20Alvarez has played non-stop football since September 2020.
00:51:24No break.
00:51:26Martinez came in this on such a high.
00:51:29Argentina hasn't had before him here.
00:51:32Couple of starts, couple off the bench.
00:51:33No goals.
00:51:34Here's Cody Gatmoe.
00:51:36Netherlands need two in nine minutes.
00:51:48Away by Molina.
00:51:50They've even left Van Dijk up there, so they really are going for it now.
00:51:56Martinez goes to Klossen.
00:51:58Cover.
00:52:00One blip, really, for them, was the defeat against Saudi.
00:52:03It's been an extraordinary year for them again.
00:52:04Argentina away by Otamendi.
00:52:14What a good ball in.
00:52:15And a very, very good header.
00:52:16And the Dutch are back in it.
00:52:18Legos off the bench.
00:52:24Best ever World Cup goal.
00:52:26Well, that was the order of the day.
00:52:28Finally, finally, we're going to get a decent ball in the box.
00:52:31And it's a decent run to the near post.
00:52:33And he whips it.
00:52:34Look at that.
00:52:36Into the corner.
00:52:37Really good header there.
00:52:40Flicks it off his head.
00:52:43With real power.
00:52:45Down into the ground.
00:52:46So the keeper can't get to it.
00:52:48It's only their second attempt on goal in the game.
00:52:50Their first on target.
00:52:56Argentina have seven minutes to hold on to it.
00:52:59Well, maybe Van Gaal is a genius and he's fooled us all.
00:53:05I think that's Messi who's gone down, which is not looking good.
00:53:07Yes, it is.
00:53:08I think he's just taking a wee bit of a time out here.
00:53:13The referee's signaling to everyone he's keeping a watch on the time,
00:53:16protecting himself.
00:53:18It was a little push, but nothing more than that.
00:53:20He's up on his feet.
00:53:21He's fine.
00:53:26It was just some question, some quarters,
00:53:31about the appointment of Antonio Hitmacher-Laroz from Spain
00:53:35for the Latin American team at this stage.
00:53:37But the Dutch camp were really quite calm about it all.
00:53:41Van Gaal said, no, he's a terrific referee and delighted with the choice.
00:53:45Well, if you look, I mean,
00:53:47he had Van Dijk really high.
00:53:48Now, at the moment, he's playing in midfield.
00:53:52He doesn't know whether to go all the way back
00:53:54or whether to gamble and go up top.
00:53:56They are really going for it, Holland.
00:53:58Antonio down the line.
00:53:59Here's Ake.
00:54:00There's an offside flag raised.
00:54:07It's against Bolino,
00:54:08still driving forward down the right-hand side at this late stage.
00:54:14So as it stands,
00:54:15it's another Argentine victory delivered by Lionel Messi.
00:54:19But it could yet change again in the last five and a half minutes.
00:54:23How weary are Argentina?
00:54:26Here's Gakpo.
00:54:28High into the box.
00:54:30Down by De Jong.
00:54:31Oh, it's a screamer, but why?
00:54:34It's an absolute belter.
00:54:35Berghaus with the set-up to him.
00:54:37And he's lanced it into the side netting,
00:54:39and it's a corner.
00:54:42Well, he's come on to this Berghaus,
00:54:43and he's hit that, hasn't he?
00:54:45He's rifled it into the side netting
00:54:47from where we were.
00:54:48I thought it was in the back of the net.
00:54:52But who did it go off?
00:54:53Because it's a corner.
00:54:58Little group of Dutch fans
00:54:59just behind that goal, outnumbered,
00:55:01but singing now.
00:55:04Berghaus, an obvious target.
00:55:05Attacks that near post.
00:55:06Into De Jong.
00:55:09Argentina may have sent on Germán Pesele
00:55:11to deal with the ball in the air,
00:55:12but they're not dealing with it well.
00:55:13No, because it's like Land of the Giants.
00:55:17These Netherlands players,
00:55:18so many big...
00:55:20I mean, van Dijk, look,
00:55:21he's just staying up there.
00:55:24I think it's the right call.
00:55:29Croatia await.
00:55:32Not the biggest surprise
00:55:34of the day so far.
00:55:35It'll be a major surprise
00:55:36if the Netherlands can pull this around
00:55:38from 2-0 down after 73.
00:55:43And Dijk, up there.
00:55:46At 6'4".
00:55:48Berghaus, 6'6".
00:55:49De Jong, 6'2".
00:55:52Ottomendi valiantly tried to leap and contend,
00:55:54but couldn't.
00:55:57There are danger signs flashing here
00:55:59for Argentina, Martin.
00:56:00Yeah.
00:56:02Van Gaal had told us the game had evolved,
00:56:05but it seems to have gone back 20 years here.
00:56:08It's just going to be long ball now
00:56:09for the rest of this match.
00:56:13It is ironic, isn't it?
00:56:14He's been telling everyone
00:56:15how the game has evolved
00:56:16into a more defensive art.
00:56:20This is...
00:56:21Route 1.
00:56:28Van Dijk.
00:56:30Ake.
00:56:38They are so determined.
00:56:39That's why they've had this wonderful record
00:56:41under Van Gaal.
00:56:44Ottomendi comes and reaches.
00:56:45There's no-one in there for Argentina, though.
00:56:51Such drama between the two countries over the years.
00:56:53That's a bad ball by Frenkie De Jong.
00:56:56Not drama we have in the last stages.
00:56:58It's now Messi blocked off it.
00:57:02Drew Berghaus in.
00:57:08He's not a happy man.
00:57:16Seven yellow cards in the game now.
00:57:18I don't think it's ever been like that, Martin.
00:57:20A seven-card game.
00:57:22It's interesting just to see this.
00:57:24Whether or not there's anything in that, really.
00:57:27It's a foul.
00:57:28Is it a yellow card?
00:57:29No, I think it's his reaction, though, Jonathan.
00:57:31He's got to keep his head.
00:57:33You want a bit of passion,
00:57:34but you've got to keep your head out there
00:57:35in the moment.
00:57:46Oh, Nathan Ake there.
00:57:47Absolutely banged into Messi.
00:57:50Great header.
00:57:51Yeah, good, honest-to-God challenge.
00:57:52Nothing wrong with it.
00:57:53Here he is.
00:57:54Ake.
00:57:55There's something wrong with that challenge, though.
00:57:56And he's going to get a yellow card
00:57:57for booting the ball into the Dutch bench.
00:58:00Oh, it's all gone off here.
00:58:03Torres booted the ball into the Dutch bench.
00:58:05They've reacted...
00:58:07extremely...
00:58:11I said this referee was inconsistent
00:58:12with his cards right from the start.
00:58:14I don't really think
00:58:15it's been a comfortable...
00:58:18run of his
00:58:19when he's had the game under control.
00:58:21He's lost it here.
00:58:23Well, so have the players.
00:58:27Pérez there, just booting that ball into the dugout.
00:58:34Rare scenes, these, at this World Cup.
00:58:36But they spoilt the occasion somewhat.
00:58:39Just interesting to see
00:58:40what the referee's going to do with this.
00:58:45What about trying to calm things down?
00:58:47Pérez should get the yellow.
00:58:53And he's caused a riot there.
00:58:55Silly on him.
00:59:01And he's telling about how he's got to control his team.
00:59:03He's substituted for Jonathan.
00:59:04I think he's lucky, really.
00:59:05Because, look, that's a booking in itself.
00:59:08And then he just smashes it straight into the...
00:59:11OK, it doesn't hit anybody.
00:59:12Look at the reaction.
00:59:14And Breit comes across.
00:59:16Who did he slam into?
00:59:19He might have been lucky as well.
00:59:21And Argentina lost their call.
00:59:24We're about to enter the last 30 seconds.
00:59:26In it comes.
00:59:28Birkhaus high, all the way through to the far post.
00:59:30It's a goal kick.
00:59:33And they're stretching and stretching and stretching.
00:59:35Denzel Dumfries.
00:59:37Yellow card for Ake, I think.
00:59:44Yeah, I'm not sure what for, but...
00:59:46the referee will know.
00:59:50I don't think we'll be seeing this referee again in these finals.
00:59:59And it's a goal.
01:00:01And it's a goal.
01:00:03And it's a goal.
01:00:05And it's a goal.
01:00:07I think he's saying there, five minutes, is he?
01:00:09To the players, Martin?
01:00:10Thought it was ten.
01:00:13Could well be ten.
01:00:14It is ten minutes of stoppage time.
01:00:20Ten minutes for Argentina to hold on.
01:00:24Ten minutes of hope for the Netherlands.
01:00:34Up goes Otamendi, beaten in the air by De Jong.
01:00:37Cody Gakpo might have been fouled.
01:00:39He was, you know.
01:00:43A rash challenge to give away there.
01:00:45It's another long ball.
01:00:47You just don't deal with it.
01:00:50A wild challenge there.
01:00:53Otamendi, it was.
01:00:57I think Gakpo is going to be on this one.
01:01:00With the quality that he has, the queuing up to take it.
01:01:05It was Nake who was cautioned.
01:01:06It's now been confirmed for us that it was van Dijk.
01:01:11I don't know what for.
01:01:12Maybe he got a message for...
01:01:14Of course, of course.
01:01:15From the port official or someone that van Dijk was involved in the push and shut.
01:01:22Now, who's going to take this?
01:01:23Gakpo to the left.
01:01:26Will it be him?
01:01:27Will it be two coat-miners?
01:01:30The man wearing number 20.
01:01:32Well, if it's coat-miners, he's going to go for power.
01:01:36Well, he blasted him.
01:01:39I've seen his penalties that he's taken over the years.
01:01:41He absolutely...
01:01:43He absolutely tanks them in.
01:01:45Yeah, I think Gakpo, though.
01:01:46It's the right sort of angle for him.
01:01:49Right-footed player.
01:01:54Such drama between these two countries over the years.
01:01:57As we've been saying all night.
01:01:58As we've been saying all night.
01:02:00Not over yet.
01:02:04Here we go.
01:02:06Coat-miners has gone away from it.
01:02:09Gakpo, it isn't...
01:02:10Oh, it's thumped into the wall from Berghaus.
01:02:14The whole of Buenos Aires is shouting like mad at the moment for the defensive work.
01:02:18Gakpo's got his head on him.
01:02:20Hands on his head saying, well, I thought I was taking it.
01:02:23Two one-hundred-time players go for the same ball there.
01:02:26There's a clash of heads.
01:02:27Otamendi was one of them.
01:02:32Martínez has gone down here.
01:02:37Yeah, well, that's a definite clash of heads.
01:02:39So...
01:02:42He was pointing to his watch again.
01:02:46They're just going to keep raining balls, though, aren't they?
01:02:48And this one here, I thought...
01:02:50I mean...
01:02:51Six inches to the left and that's in.
01:02:59The referee signalled he's adding time on again for all this.
01:03:01That's confirmation of that Van Dijk caution, by the way.
01:03:07A wonderful game in Marseille.
01:03:09We've been talking about 1998.
01:03:11Newman was sent off with a...
01:03:12Dutch Ortega was sent off.
01:03:14A headbutt in the goalkeeper in front of the referees.
01:03:17Honestly, it was a mad night down there.
01:03:19In the late drama of the Bergkamp goal.
01:03:21And here we are again.
01:03:22All these years on.
01:03:27Torre Martínez tries to hold it up.
01:03:28Koopman is on.
01:03:29De Jong.
01:03:30He's fouled.
01:03:33He's fouled by...
01:03:36Fernández.
01:03:37It was a free kick here for the Netherlands.
01:03:38They'll just pump it up.
01:03:39Yeah, Argentina have just stopped playing.
01:03:42They're just sitting on this lead.
01:03:44Netherlands have plenty of time to haul us to extra time.
01:03:56Kody Gakpo.
01:04:05De Jong.
01:04:06Greg Horse did really well.
01:04:08Gakpo.
01:04:09Really well played.
01:04:11By Fernandez.
01:04:12He thought it was a free kick.
01:04:13Throw in a big pump for Argentina.
01:04:15Fernandez has been brought on as needed to marshal that midfield.
01:04:17He's having to defend an awful lot here.
01:04:21He's waiting for that next long ball to come in.
01:04:25Ake throws in short.
01:04:29Too short for the Netherlands.
01:04:30Greg Horse down wide here.
01:04:31Let's see what happens.
01:04:32De Jong.
01:04:33De Jong.
01:04:34De Jong.
01:04:35De Jong.
01:04:36De Jong.
01:04:37Too short for the Netherlands.
01:04:38Greg Horse down wide here like that.
01:04:42Timbuk.
01:04:45Too young.
01:04:46Jürgen Timbuk.
01:04:49Has it once again.
01:04:51A man who interests Manchester United apparently.
01:04:53High ball up to Liverpool's Van Dijk.
01:04:57Argentina aren't managing this at all well.
01:04:58Back in by Gakpo.
01:05:00That's a great header away.
01:05:01Under pressure.
01:05:02He was fouled as well.
01:05:03Otamendic.
01:05:05You're right, Jonathan.
01:05:06Excellent header there.
01:05:07Otamendic.
01:05:11Ball being delivered in again and he just gets to it.
01:05:16That's the order of the day.
01:05:17Get your head on the ball.
01:05:21Giving two inches to Luke De Jong in the air.
01:05:28They are willing their country on.
01:05:32Ibala.
01:05:33Ibala.
01:05:34And Di Maria look on anxiously.
01:05:37Five and a half of stoppage time gone.
01:05:46Those in the crowd with an early flight back tomorrow.
01:05:48Martin dreading extra time and penalties.
01:05:51I know.
01:05:52I'm one of them.
01:05:55It's away there at the back.
01:05:58By Jürgen Timbuk.
01:06:01How they keep coming back in their droves.
01:06:03The Argentine supporters.
01:06:05I have no idea.
01:06:06It's such an expensive business.
01:06:08They love it.
01:06:09It's unbelievable.
01:06:10Football fanatics.
01:06:14Martinez.
01:06:16Running his man.
01:06:18He is not let away.
01:06:24On there by Gakpo.
01:06:26Veghorst.
01:06:28Swept forward by.
01:06:30De Jong.
01:06:34Trying to set it up there.
01:06:36I think the Netherlands with a header down by.
01:06:38De Jong to Van Dijk.
01:06:41Just too much on it.
01:06:42Wasn't that.
01:06:44Just got to work the ball into wide positions.
01:06:47Netherlands.
01:06:50Rain those crosses in.
01:06:53Still don't seem in that much of a hurry to get it forward.
01:06:58Going completely bypassing Lionel Messi now.
01:07:03He's an anxious onlooker as much as the rest of them are.
01:07:11Martinez trying to make a nuisance of himself.
01:07:14In behind Koopmanis.
01:07:18Now Dumfries this powerful running fullback.
01:07:21Look at them up there now.
01:07:23It's an arrowhead of five.
01:07:25Orange shirts.
01:07:28Berghaus.
01:07:30Dumfries has got up in support.
01:07:31It's a.
01:07:32Lazy sort of a tired ball though.
01:07:38No free kick given is.
01:07:40Oh it is given in the end.
01:07:42Didn't think it was going to be for the challenge on.
01:07:45Paredes.
01:07:47He's celebrating isn't he?
01:07:48Like he scored a goal.
01:07:50Just getting a free kick.
01:07:52Just to relieve the pressure for his team.
01:07:57Just run out of steam here.
01:07:58Argentina.
01:08:01Youngest coach of these finals.
01:08:06One defeated forty going back to July 2019 Argentina.
01:08:12Netherlands haven't been beaten in a World Cup game since they lost to Spain in South Africa in the final.
01:08:20That long run is coming to an end unless.
01:08:24They can hammer it high.
01:08:27The posh seats.
01:08:28The.
01:08:29Former players.
01:08:32Leading the cheerleaders.
01:08:34That's a foul against.
01:08:36Messi.
01:08:39Well they're all going up now.
01:08:45Hit high and hopeful by Kurt Meunier.
01:08:47Van Dijk's on the end of it.
01:08:49Here's Akay.
01:08:50Trying to dig it out wide to Cody Gutbroe.
01:08:52Cody Gutbroe.
01:08:55That's a panicky clearance if I ever saw one.
01:09:02De Jong in the middle.
01:09:04Couldn't get it for nothing.
01:09:05That's a risky free kick given away there.
01:09:10A definite push I think.
01:09:12Was it Otamendi who came to win a ball that wasn't there to be won Martin?
01:09:15I think it was.
01:09:16He's coming a long way as well.
01:09:17Notice the substitute.
01:09:19It's Petzela.
01:09:21He's just fixed on that ball.
01:09:23But he just needs to leave his colleague to it.
01:09:26Again it's a dangerous area.
01:09:27And I think it will be.
01:09:29Capo taking this for sure.
01:09:36The two.
01:09:37Coat miners.
01:09:38Wants to have a go at it.
01:09:40One goal he scored for his country in the past.
01:09:46Knopper.
01:09:47On his launches.
01:09:50And offering up prayers to the football gods.
01:09:55Nine minutes and counting of stoppage time.
01:09:59Ten minutes of stoppage time played.
01:10:01This is it for the Netherlands.
01:10:02This is it.
01:10:03It's almost a carbon copy of one we had just a few minutes ago.
01:10:08Messy caution.
01:10:09Won't matter really to the Argentina hordes.
01:10:14If they can hold on.
01:10:18Do or die now for the Netherlands.
01:10:20It all comes down to this.
01:10:22Cody Gutpo on one side of it.
01:10:25Will it be he who takes it?
01:10:28Will it be Coat miners?
01:10:29It's played into the wall.
01:10:30Danneke Lee.
01:10:31They've done it.
01:10:33They've done it.
01:10:36They've levelled it up.
01:10:38And broke their course.
01:10:39What a hero for the Netherlands.
01:10:45They couldn't hold on.
01:10:47We go to extra time.
01:10:48Almost certainly.
01:10:51Van Gogh's got a touch.
01:10:55Coat miners involved.
01:10:59It was so delicate the way they took the free kick.
01:11:02And Di Maria can't even look.
01:11:07And Wout van Gogh with two goals.
01:11:10For the Netherlands in seven minutes having come off the bench.
01:11:15Wow, the audacity of this free kick and the imagination.
01:11:19I mean, look at this.
01:11:20He just rolls it into the centre forward.
01:11:23He gets a touch.
01:11:25Backhurst.
01:11:27And he sweeps it in with his left foot.
01:11:29I mean, nobody's expecting this.
01:11:32Ingenuity.
01:11:35And look at the way he pulls that off.
01:11:37That's inspired finishing.
01:11:40You cannot believe the cheek of it.
01:11:44And the brilliance of it.
01:11:48Eight minutes from time they were heading out.
01:11:51Wout van Gogh.
01:11:53People giggled about his record at Burnley.
01:11:55Two goals in 20 games there in his seven months.
01:11:59He has the last laugh now.
01:12:03He can't kick off because there's no ball on the pitch.
01:12:07And Martinez looks absolutely dumbfounded.
01:12:18Messi awaits for the ball.
01:12:33Can Argentina yet win this?
01:12:35We've had 12 and a half minutes of stoppage time.
01:12:38And we go to extra time.
01:12:40And Argentina thought they had it won with Molina's first half goal.
01:12:44Added two by Messi's penalty.
01:12:46And then they brought the big men on, the Netherlands.
01:12:49And Weghorst has pulled them back in an angry, angry encounter now.
01:12:55And the substitutes are getting involved.
01:12:57The two sets of players are getting involved.
01:13:01Big Knoppart comes out.
01:13:02There's the man who's done it for them, Martin.
01:13:05Yeah, incredible.
01:13:07I mean, honestly, that obviously was practiced on the training ground.
01:13:10And by this man as well, van Gaal.
01:13:12Van Gaal, right to the very last minute.
01:13:15He's had a big say in this because they'd have worked on that.
01:13:18He made the necessary substitutes.
01:13:20He's fired.
01:13:22Angry scenes at the end and more to come.
01:13:262-2, we go to extra time.
