00:00It's still there
00:03It's still there. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god
00:12Hey, what's going on everybody for first we feast I'm Sean Evans and you're watching hot ones
00:16It's the show with hot questions and even hotter wings and today we're joined by Sabrina Carpenter
00:20She's a pop music force the ripple effect of her 2022 breakout still reverberating
00:24But the dawn of a new era begins the latest singles are please please please in the chart-topping
00:28Espresso as well as the announcement of a brand new album
00:30It's called short and sweet and it's set to drop on August 23rd Sabrina Carpenter. Welcome to the show. Thank you for having me
00:36What's your mindset like going into this? Are you someone who appreciates a spicy meal?
00:41Appreciates is the wrong word. They always just kind of like happened to me and then I deal with it
00:47But I I was telling you earlier. I really like what it does for my sinuses
00:52So I'm really excited for them to be open like super open, you know
00:56Maybe I'll come out a changed woman
01:14I
01:16Think everything's a trick. So I'm just scared. Just like I don't actually know you. We just met Sean. Okay
01:23Okay
01:24And these are chicken, right? Mm-hmm
01:31That one's lovely, it's really good
01:34So it's interesting to me that one of your biggest songs nonsense almost didn't make the last album
01:39Is there a lesson to be learned there?
01:41And if so, how might it have influenced or shaped your approach to making a track list this time around?
01:46It made me want to trust my
01:49My personal favorites a little bit more
01:51I think like when you're making a
01:53Record over time you want to play it for your best friends
01:56You want to play it for your family?
01:57And then you start to get in your head a little bit on everyone's favorites
02:00and I think the lesson I learned with nonsense was that this song was so
02:05kindred with my personality and I started to get in my head on like
02:10what fits a record versus what fits like Sabrina or myself as an artist and
02:16That taught me so many lessons moving forward making the next record
02:20I think now I just whatever feels the most honest and connects to me the most I feel like we'll connect with other people
02:31Give the wings love they'll love you back
02:40So good
02:42Not blasting us out yet
02:44No, there we go back to like I
02:48Don't want to get cocky
02:51No, that's lovely. I love that one
02:54You know a lot of times comedians. They'll obsess about
02:58Linguistic specificity, you know, and I'm wondering if there's a corollary for songwriters
03:02Like how much of honing a song is just playing with a particular word until the lyric lands. Just right
03:08That's such a good question. I think
03:11Sometimes I really do go into it with such a specific
03:15You know word or phrase that I love and I do kind of obsess over it until I can
03:20Find the right place for it whether it's in that song or a completely different song
03:24I'm not a comedian so I don't know what they do
03:26And you know
03:27All I know is that sometimes comedians have lines that fall flat and just get booed and that's how I feel sometimes as a songwriter
03:34Sometimes you have lines and songs that fall flat and get booed and sometimes you have, you know
03:39The best joke of the night. So yeah, sometimes you spin it and that's why you got to take the shots, you know Sabrina
03:45Yeah, I'm not a sports girl
03:48I think I know you just said
03:54Do you have a lot of friends
03:56Like I'm just I guess I asked the question because I'm like if you if you have friends and you feel like you have good
04:01Friends that I trust you and we're good. Yeah, listen say what you will about me, but like I'm a dog
04:06You know what? I mean? Yeah the same six best friends. I have now are the same six best friends. I had when I was eight years old
04:12That's what I do to tell a long relationship. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, you have long relationships that I'm fine
04:16Yeah, but if you're like, yeah, like I kind of switched friend groups every other month
04:20No, no, they can say what they will about me, but I am a ride-or-die. I'm in the foxhole. Okay, then let's do it
04:29Mmm-hmm
04:32So I noticed that you'll oftentimes take a break from your live show to talk one-on-one with a fan who's sitting in the front
04:38Row, which can lead to everything from you know, you fielding general life advice to impromptu marriage proposals in the crowd
04:44Uh-huh. What's the most over your head?
04:46You've ever felt during one of those one-on-one therapy conversations in the middle of a concert. Someone told me their dad left
04:53This is not funny
04:56This is how I felt
05:00People recording being like, oh so she makes light of
05:05People's dads leave it's like no. Oh my gosh, you know, but it's a show
05:09Are we supposed to entertain and banter and usually the person has a good sense of humor if they're telling me that their dad left
05:14In front of a crowd of a couple thousand people
05:16So I I just was I was taken aback and then somehow it turned into like a really beautiful
05:23Conversation and I was able to like segue into my next song
05:27Because I like to take people out of the show for a second
05:30It just makes it feel a little bit more like a slumber party or something
05:34my palate is being
05:36Opened my eyes my tongue
05:38My senses are starting to bubble making lots of new friends, but it's nothing crazy
05:43Oh
05:49This is y'all's, okay, maybe I should have a bigger bite. I'm being a little bit. All right. Yeah. Yeah. Okay
06:00Mmm
06:01These are really good so far. Okay
06:07But this one has kind of a smokiness to it
06:10Los Calientes. Mm-hmm. Yes. I like that
06:14Do you do anything unique or unconventional to protect your voice?
06:17Like I always wonder if singers approach it kind of like a skincare routine. I actually do I do a lot of steaming
06:24I do a lot of you know, obviously vocal warm-ups
06:26But I think there's just a lot of different methods and like random like herbal honeys that people wouldn't expect
06:32Yeah that keep it really healthy and because when you're constantly just like every night
06:37It's like it's crazy to be able to maintain that for a very long period of time without getting
06:42Horse, you know horse. I hate that. I hate that that word is what it's used for
06:47But that's what it it kind of sounds like what it is, you know, it's like dishwasher, you know horse
06:51That's actually such a good point
06:53Yeah, what else would you call a dishwasher?
06:59Bullseye right off the bat. I know
07:02That should be the rest of the interview. I was just talking about
07:05Sound like what they should hmm hot sauce is another one. That sounds like what it is what it is, you know
07:11Yeah, and on that topic or like or like death trap
07:17Meow's revenge here. This is fat cat meows revenge. I love cats
07:28Do people like get in the comments and like judge like her bites weren't big enough
07:33There's some of them that are like
07:36Over the years. I'm looking at you know
07:40But you're you're uh, you're giving a good commitment to each one
07:44You don't have to worry about that at all
07:45And I will say this is the first one that kind of takes a little bit. I just felt the shift
07:49I felt the shift, but I'm not
07:52I'm not scared. Yeah, you got this. You got this. Yeah, maybe that's a tourist thing. We're a little stubborn. Are you stubborn?
07:58Yeah, I think so
07:59Sometimes I look at that stuff and I'm like, yeah, that kind of that is me that is like and then some of them
08:03I'm like, you know, it's a bit far-fetched. Yeah. Yeah, I agree with that
08:06So I know that you're a lifelong Beatles fan
08:08Yes
08:09I am you cite across the universe is one of your favorite movies the white album is one of your favorite records meeting Paul McCartney
08:16One of your career highlights. So what I want to do here is play a little game where I'll give you a Beatles fact
08:21Okay, and you tell me if it's truth or nonsense
08:24This is gonna be wild. Okay, let's do it
08:27First up the origin story from yesterday came from Paul McCartney waking up one morning and humming a melody about breakfast
08:35repeating scrambled eggs
08:37Baby, I love scrambled eggs so he wouldn't forget the tune
08:41I know that part of this is correct because it happened to him in a dream
08:47And I know that he wrote the song I dream I didn't know about the scrambled eggs bit
08:51But is that true you're going with truth, you know, you're Lord, you know, you're worse
08:54I think true. All right up next the Beatles long mop hair was so controversial that in
09:011963 they ran a newspaper ad that read best wishes to all the starving hairdressers and their families
09:08Best wishes to all the starving hairdressers and mmm feels a little current. I'm gonna say no you are correct. That is nonsense
09:15It was actually the Rolling Stones. Yeah, who did that? Look at you two for two?
09:19Yeah, you know just gotta trust yourself
09:22on Bohemian Rhapsody
09:24Freddie Mercury plays the very same
09:26Century-old Bechstein grand piano that Paul McCartney used when the Beatles recorded. Hey Jude seven years prior
09:33I'm going to say yes, right. It's like so specific
09:36It's so has to be true and Freddie like knows his shit like, you know what I mean? I feel like he would he would
09:44Like that you're piecing together
09:46Context clues here in a way that you are now three for three Sabrina. Thank you one more for you
09:52We'll see if you can run the table at one point the relationship between Paul and George got so fraught that
09:59After the breakup when Paul was on stage, he would incessantly
10:03Challenge George to come meet him on stage so the two could duel
10:08Okay, so this one I feel like I go both ways because they are that's such playful banter those boys
10:14So I want to say I want to say yes
10:18It was actually David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. So that was not what I was gonna say
10:25The color of this is making me fearful good place to be okay
10:38I've been narrow Sherry Koji
10:45No, no, no, that one's fine. Yeah, then this is
10:52Yeah
10:53Have you just?
10:56Has anyone ever project out in front of you never in front of me, okay, believe it or not
11:00I why do you think you might no, no, I just want to make sure
11:04I'm setting a standard. Yeah an expectation. It's all right. You gotta let it go
11:09The struggle is part of the spectacle. What would I like to drink?
11:13Hit this milkshake that you brought yeah, actually milk tastes so bad
11:19bro
11:20Chocolate milkshake. That's where it's at. Yeah kind of clutch. There you go. Okay
11:26That was fine
11:28It definitely affects you. Yeah, but these should
11:31That's the show you got to be moved. Exactly. You gotta leave you gotta leave with a new outlook on life
11:37Right, don't trust anyone. It's getting don't know Sean. Yeah, that's what you gotta lean into. Yeah
11:43There's a long history a great tradition of misheard lyrics and pop smashes
11:47Totally, is there any sort of creative strategy to the difficult to decipher but ultra catchy vocal performance on a song like espresso?
11:54I I do like to pay attention to if people can understand lyrics
11:58Because so much of what I like is, you know, the punchline and if people don't know the punchline it's like wait
12:05And I'm learning as I go, I don't think
12:08Sorry, that one came back
12:11Yeah, I don't think I don't think I have it all figured out but that's like how I feel about me espresso
12:17I've heard a lot of people that were like she should have said that's that blonde espresso duh
12:23Like and I'm like, well, yes
12:25That is another song. I think as well that that deserves its spot in the world
12:30but this one for me was like
12:32you know me espresso just felt like the right thing to say and and it rhymes with the line before it and
12:38Just all the reasons and I just think it's so funny like maybe everyone's right
12:43How are you with red flags like do you see them no red flag
12:55Really want to eat more chicken
12:58Okay, I'm gonna eat more chicken
13:01Okay, I'm gonna eat more chicken
13:06Okay, I'm gonna eat more chicken
13:13This does have a build on it, yeah, and you're probably starting to feel that now
13:20Wow, that one's so exciting. Yeah. Oh my gosh coming alive sinuses loosening up. Yeah
13:30Yeah, so you began uploading covers the internet at nine years old the tradition that you continue to this day
13:37You know oftentimes in your concert reserving some of your set list. I'm a snotty girl, by the way
13:42Let it fly get a long long leash on the show. Okay, we got we got Kleenex over there
13:48Oh, oh, I didn't see that. We have lots of things going on over there all for you all for you
13:53All right, keep going what we saying does anything come to mind when you think about a popular song?
13:57That is low-key like the hardest to cover live
13:59I really like to incorporate covers because I started covering others. This one is really
14:08Um
14:10It's like my tongue now is trying to like revert back into my throat, I know
14:15Yeah, yeah, it's a red flag
14:20Like songs with a big range
14:24Like
14:25sometimes that's the point because I like to challenge myself as much as I can and
14:29Add like a different element to the show where I can sing it a little bit more
14:34How we feeling it's like the skies that answer was bullshit, I don't know what I just told you like
14:38That's how I'm feeling right now. I was like, what did I just say?
14:41It sounded like you nailed the dismount to me to be honest with you
14:44So, what do you think we should do should we like do you want to take a break?
14:48Do you want to slow it down?
14:49Do you want to just we got right in we got to do it, right? We got to do it. Is it this one?
14:54It's that one. Okay
14:58It was so nice to meet you
15:03Oh
15:09No
15:11Whoa, yeah, don't ask me a question. I know I'll just let it cook. I'll just let it cook sit back
15:19Nothing worse than what you're going through what you're going through and here's this bald guy winding it up
15:26With a context heavy question that he's gonna land
15:29I know. Oh my god about 30 seconds. You just want to scream. Okay, I do remember one time
15:34But I ate something so hot that I just started calling. Oh, I don't think I'm gonna do that
15:39But you know what? I'll be ready. All right, I'll keep my head on
15:44Okay, okay, you know what yeah, I'm going for the milkshake
15:52It's still there
15:55It's still there. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. I know it'll kind of not go away
16:00This is sort of like who we are and what we become at this point in the show. I
16:09Think I'm fine. Mm-hmm. I think it's all mental
16:15You're right you've got this so just hot
16:24Really hot
16:28And then just be careful around the eyes
16:33Yeah, right
16:36Why is it five minutes in though?
16:39It's only been 30 seconds. You're just caught. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god
16:42You're just caught in a time and a spice time loop. Do you do this to yourself willingly? Has anyone ever sued you?
16:49Why you getting an idea or something?
16:52No, I'm just you signed a waiver
16:54That's ironclad
16:57Oh my god, oh my gosh, no, I was just curious. Um
17:04You know what's crazy yeah this milkshake
17:07Has really saved me
17:09Me too, by the way, you know, not everybody brings milkshakes sabrina. It's always nice when someone does though because this is
17:16It like leaves you for a second and then it's like ready again
17:20Yeah
17:21It comes right back comes right back
17:23Now what would be crazy is if you were gonna tell me to eat another one right now
17:32The worst is over famous last words cheers cheers, okay, wait, all right
17:45I'd like to applaud whoever made the wings. They're lovely
17:50That last one was
17:52Was like the saddest thing that's ever happened to me. Um,
17:56But we made it through and honestly, I haven't been as snotty as I thought I was gonna be. Yeah, you're good. Yeah
18:01You're good, right? Exactly
18:04Um, yeah, we're good. We're good. Actually this one's kind of fine
18:08Where does headlining the bethlehem music fest fall on your list of career accomplishments?
18:12That's so sweet of you to ask that was like my first like
18:16maybe
18:17i'm gonna be successful like that was truly because
18:20I think anywhere where you grow up and you have like the biggest music festival in your town like
18:25You know, that was such a part of my childhood going every year
18:28that when I got to headline I was like
18:30This is one of my biggest dreams and that has only turned into like
18:33So many of the cool things that i've always wanted to do that
18:35You know even the show like it's really just you know
18:39It's such a it's such a gift to like get to watch things and then find yourself getting to do them and
18:43You can just kind of like look back and know that like all the all the like tour bus nights where you know
18:50The hot water goes out
18:51And you don't have hot water. It's like those things are building character and prepare you for those moments
18:57I'm a big believer in timing. So love music fest though big fan
19:02All right, sabrina
19:05Is this one like spicy
19:13In solidarity in solidarity, yeah. Okay. Wait, it's just not coming out. It's like ketchup. Oh, there you go
19:19I
19:21Didn't like that sound
19:24Someone went oh
19:26Okay, that means you did it, right?
19:28so
19:30Before I do this. Um
19:34Like
19:35Is tomorrow gonna be hard for me?
19:39Does it does it have like a long lasting effect?
19:42i'm, just trying to get yeah, so
19:45What you're feeling right now?
19:47In the next 15 to 20 minutes will just be a happy memory, okay
19:52Okay, you'll be like I could I could do that again, you know, you'll forget
19:56The pain that you went through. Okay tomorrow
19:59I'm, not making any promises, you know, like yeah, what happens? Well, we're not gonna see each other tomorrow
20:03You don't have to worry about that. I don't have to worry about it. Okay, let's do it. All right, here we go
20:12I took a big bite on that one. I saw that. Yeah going out with the bang
20:17As we've learned today
20:18You're a woman of many talents not the least of which when it comes to throwing down on some hot wings
20:23All right, sabrina, but to close things out. I want to put a spotlight on a hidden one
20:27You know, you once said that drawing is one of your favorite therapeutic activities. Yeah
20:32I realize that this is a big ask under the circumstances
20:35But I actually do have a sketch pad. Oh over here. Are you trying to distract me?
20:41Oh, we have some pencils. We have some pens. We're wondering if it wouldn't be too much trouble
20:45Maybe you could give us like a doodle or sketch inspired by your experience with the wings of death today
20:53Okay, let's do it
20:59That one's
21:01A little kickback. Yeah a little kickback on that one. Okay. Wait, I kind of want the pencil actually
21:08Wow i'm trying to figure out the shape of your head
21:12It's a very clean oval. Okay
21:15Mine's more of like a heart
21:18So i've been
21:25All right, okay my lips are actually like are they bigger nice plump are they like plump
21:35Yeah, okay, okay what color are your eyes like kind of a green green
21:44Oh my god guys, I just like to
22:04All right, we're good we're good
22:14Yes
22:16All right, I think it's good the reveal
22:22Incredible
22:24Hang it in the lube
22:25Sabrina carpenter taking on the wings of death living to tell the tale now
22:30There's nothing left to do but roll out the red carpet for you
22:32This camera this camera this camera. Let the people know what you have going on in your life. I'm a singer and
22:39And my new album is coming out
22:42It's called short and sweet notice I didn't call it short and spicy because I like sweet things better
22:48um, so please go listen and then thank you sean
22:54For having me so much love you guys all and make sure to check my website because I don't know what I just
22:59Um, yeah, I think I have a website right? She's a beautiful new.com
23:02www.loveyou
23:08Whoa
23:11Such great questions, by the way
23:13Do you want some ice cream? Yeah. Oh my god. Wait, what? Oh
23:17Whenever you most need ice cream on this show
23:19We make it appear. I was just saying could that have happened sooner or no?
23:23Yeah
23:30I would have been really pissed if I left and I didn't almost cry or want to like jump off a cliff
23:35So I think this was exactly what I hoped for
23:38And more um
23:41But I i'm thinking about a lot of people differently now
23:46Like other pasts, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah makes me makes me wonder what's going on
