00:00When we took this place over and it hadn't been farmed up the back here for probably 15 years
00:06and some of the old sayings were, look, that country will be fresh.
00:10No, it's not really fresh. All the weeds have taken everything out of that.
00:14You do soil tests and they come back with nothing left in the soil.
00:18The soils were just degraded.
00:21If you put nothing in, you just don't get anything out.
00:26Joan and I, my wife, we mainly do everything by ourself, which seems to work.
00:31Brad does all the spraying. He records I can't mix a cake up properly,
00:35so there's definitely no way I could mix spray recommendations.
00:43My philosophy is, like, you've got to try to be economic about it,
00:47but then you've also got to grow the best crop you can.
00:50You have to spend the money, I guess, to make the money.
00:53It's not about, for me, growing the biggest crop.
00:56I want the best gross margin, and that's what I try to work towards.
01:02Carbon farming, for me, I've been looking at this for the last couple of years,
01:06and the reason I'm looking at the carbon farming is I don't want to get to 2030
01:11and have to pay a bill for my emissions just to farm.
01:14And for me, planting trees wasn't an option.
01:17I've got too much open country. I don't want to plant trees.
01:20If I can look after my soil, we'll go down that path.
01:23So if I can increase soil carbon, it helps me hold moisture,
01:27get better soil health and increase my yields slightly,
01:30and then have some accues, that'll be fantastic.
