Whether you're a fan of Resident Evil, Outlast, or Amnesia, 2023 is your lucky gaming year because it has what you want. This is why today we're going to summarize the year and talk about the 15 most memorable and special horror games

00:40If we talk about all of them, we will probably need to make the video longer than two hours.
00:45However, there are certain titles that simply stand out from all the rest, due to their
00:50creative style, memorable stories, and sometimes because they remind us of great experiences
00:57in the past.
00:59And what's even better is that this year we had sequels and new installments to games
01:03that we literally waited more than a decade for.
01:06But on the other side, none of us can deny that we had so many disappointments too.
01:10Like Redfall, which I really had high hopes for, and also the Greyhill incident, which
01:15felt like a promising alien game when it was revealed.
01:18And let's not ignore the scams too, like the one and only The Day Before, which only
01:24lasted a few days before it got removed from Steam.
01:27Anyway, let's not ruin our mood with the negative side, and let's focus on why this year will
01:33be remembered as one of the best years for horror, if not the best of all times.
01:38Because today, I tried hard to be specific and prepare for you a list of the 20 best
01:43and most memorable horror games that we had the chance to play this year, and gave us
01:47an experience that simply should be appreciated.
01:51The order is from the 20th best to the best of the entire year.
01:55But that doesn't necessarily mean that game number 8 is better than game number 15.
02:00All these games have their own strong points and advantages.
02:04So without further ado, let's start.
02:17This is probably one of the most underrated indie horror games this year, because it passed
02:28by without much attention.
02:31The game tells the story of a German soldier, who is very confused and tormented by the
02:36memories of war.
02:38He is stuck in a weird realm between his family's house and the trenches of the world war.
02:43The man here is haunted by endless nightmares from his casual life in the house, and also
02:48by the trauma of the war that never left his head.
02:52The visuals are also very satisfying and suitable for the era of the events, and the hallucinations
02:57that the protagonist encounters are at the core of the experience.
03:02So when it comes to indie gaming, I believe this one deserves a spot here.
03:32This is not the best game you can play or anything.
03:43But considering the price, it's definitely a worthy experience that needs to be mentioned.
03:49The game is set in 1994 and follows the story of Agent Delilah Reyes, a former government
03:55spy who is now working for an entity called the Hades Unit.
04:00She then finds herself investigating a series of mysterious events at a remote research
04:05facility, but things turn out to be much more sinister than she thought, involving bioweapons,
04:12weird creatures, and a shadowy organization with a dangerous agenda.
04:17The action elements are really strong, and the third-person perspective makes it feel
04:22like a Resident Evil game from the older generations.
04:25So overall, it's really a good experience that can be suitable for people who enjoy
04:29this category of games.
04:59Warriors of Fear has held a special place in the hearts of indie horror fans since the
05:03original installment in 2016.
05:06The painful story of the painter and his wife was very deep, and it really touched us.
05:12The 2023 installment came out as a mix of the entire series by combining the stories
05:17of the original game and the second one along with the DLCs.
05:22It uses Unreal Engine 5 to create a much more realistic environment with ray tracing, HDR,
05:29and 4K resolution.
05:30You will relive the stories of the painter, the actor, and the writer.
05:35But this time, everything is intertwined and combined to provide one powerful experience
05:40that pays homage to the whole series.
05:43Even though some people felt that the final product wasn't as good as they expected, I
05:48still believe that it deserves to be included in this list.
06:18System Shock was a very familiar title to gamers in the 90s, but the remake of this
06:45year succeeded in reviving the experience to make it suitable for modern-day gamers
06:50as well.
06:52This is a full-fledged remake of the original System Shock, with new graphics and gameplay
06:57mechanics, but retaining the core story and atmosphere of the original game, which is
07:03obviously a good thing.
07:05Just like in the first story, the deranged digital program SHODAN has seized command
07:10of Citadel Station, transforming its inhabitants into a formidable army of cyborgs and mutants.
07:17You must navigate the treacherous depths of the corrupted space station and engage in
07:22battles to thwart SHODAN's plans and prevent the impending doom of humanity.
07:27The gameplay is really fun and full of surprises, and I don't think adding this game to the
07:32list is a mistake.
07:55Dredge is a beautiful game in every sense of the word, and there's no way I would miss
08:17it on a list like this, even though we've never talked about it before.
08:22In this fascinating world, you play as a fisherman who ventures into a remote archipelago
08:27shrouded in mist and mystery.
08:31Driven by a thirst for adventure and the promise of rare treasures, you cast your line into
08:37the dark depths, unaware of the horrors that lurk beneath.
08:41However, when you begin to delve deeper, the breathtaking fishing paradise gives way to
08:46a disturbing reality inspired by the works of H.P.
08:49Lovecraft.
08:51It's really a sophisticated journey full of things to do and explore, as well as hidden
08:55stuff that you weren't meant to unravel.
08:58This game came out in March and got amazing reviews on Steam that made it one of the most
09:03loved titles this year.
09:33Phasmophobia fans have been waiting for a competitor for some time, and Demonologist
10:00was actually even better than what they were asking for.
10:04As usual, you play as a team of paranormal investigators who must identify and exorcise
10:09demons from haunted locations.
10:12Each demon has unique characteristics and weaknesses, requiring strategic use of your
10:17equipment and teamwork to succeed, which is really the main source of fun here.
10:23The visuals are absolutely impressive and much better than Phasmophobia, and there are
10:28really cool features like voice interactions and the customization of your character that
10:34you can do with the money you earn.
10:36Whether you're a fan of multiplayer horror games or not, you can't deny that this title
10:41is fun and worthy of being included here.
11:41This game is not basically horror, but just like Little Nightmares is often included in
11:46the genre, I think this one deserves a spot here fair and square.
11:50Bramble, the Mountain King tells the story of Ole, a young boy who embarks on a perilous
11:56journey to save his sister after she got kidnapped by a monstrous troll known as the Mountain
12:02King.
12:04Even though the objective sounds simple, the adventure of the boy here is fascinating and
12:09full of all kinds of obstacles that you can never expect.
12:12The environment looks amazing, and the style of the visuals is something that pleases our
12:18eye, so it really makes sense that the game received overwhelming positive reviews on Steam.

13:01There's still a chance for you to make things right, Sally.
13:12I wanted to add this game so badly to the list because it's actually a title that I
13:17didn't expect would even be released.
13:19It was initially exclusive to Google's gaming platform in 2019, but now it's available on
13:25other platforms as well.
13:28In this enticing game, you play as a young girl named Sally searching for her missing
13:33cousin Emily in a creepy, unfamiliar world, which honestly is a similar story to Bramble.
13:39The line between reality and dreams blurs as Sally navigates this surreal landscape,
13:44facing her own fears and confronting the emotional impact of her actions.
13:50The gameplay focuses on stealth and puzzle solving to avoid enemies, and you can also
13:55use the environment to your advantage, hide in shadows, and use distractions to confuse
14:00them.
14:01In my humble opinion, it's a fun game that deserves praise, even though it didn't get
14:05much attention this year.

14:48The Forest blew up the internet when it was released in 2014, and Sons of the Forest succeeded

16:09However, Amnesia the Bunker used a different style to add some strategy to the survival

16:16Here, a man named Henri wakes up inside a bunker with no memory of how he got there.
16:21He is injured and alone, and he can only hear his own breathing and the flickering of a
16:26weird old flashlight to guide him.
16:29The strong point of this game is that the whole time you will remain waiting for the
16:33creature to show up from anywhere.
16:35The stress of knowing that he's with you in the bunker is unbearable.
16:39So this game is obviously among the best additions to our horror library in 2023.
17:09Outlast
17:29There's no way you can find a horror gamer who's not familiar with Outlast.
17:33Some people even consider it to be the best of all time in its category, and others see
17:38it as a source of inspiration for many other single-player titles.
17:43But apparently, the Outlast trials prove that the franchise can compete fiercely in the
17:47multiplayer market too, and it's also a prequel to the first two games.
17:52The events here are set in the Cold War era, where players take on the role of test subjects
17:58for the Murkoff Corporation, involuntarily recruited to participate in a series of mysterious
18:03and terrifying experiments aimed at brainwashing and mind control.
18:09Everything in this place is disturbing and full of pain, and obviously the Murkoff Corporation
18:14is even more violent than ever.
18:35Lies of P with Horror
18:59I know that many people might not associate Lies of P with horror, but this type of game
19:04is actually included in the Dark Fantasy category, and this category is technically connected
19:09to the horror genre.
19:11That's why many gamers consider Bloodborne a horror game as well.
19:15Anyway, Lies of P is a very special experience of the year, and it tells the story of P,
19:21a Pinocchio-inspired puppet made by the mysterious puppet maker Mr. Geppetto.
19:27But unlike in the classic tale, P here can actually lie, and this ability becomes a crucial
19:32tool for navigating the dangerous world.
19:36You need to know exactly when lying can save you or screw you in multiple ways.
19:40The enemies that you encounter here are insane and creative, and you need to know how to
19:45deal with each one of them differently.
19:47Lies of P was nominated for certain awards in the Game Awards, and I honestly see it
19:52as a masterpiece that showed up out of nowhere.
20:16Dead Space is known by many as one of the best survival horror games ever made.
20:45But this iconic game got even better in 2023 with the release of an insanely well-made
20:51remake that revived our hopes in electronic arts.
20:56Just like in the original release, here you'll also find yourself in a desolate mining spaceship
21:01overrun by grotesque alien necromorphs.
21:04However, the updated textures, lighting, and effects, coupled with immersive 3D audio,
21:10raised the amount of tension and terror to the next level.
21:14So there's no doubt that this remake is among the best releases of horror in 2023,
21:19and it may even be in gaming in general.
22:19Resident Evil 4 is a unique game in the series because it introduced something new 18 years
22:35ago back in 2005.
22:38It introduced the over-the-shoulder camera view, which revolutionized the third-person
22:42games forever.
22:45But just when we thought the game couldn't be any better, the remake 18 years later tells
22:49us that we're wrong, and the improvement is undeniable.
22:53You will go through the same mission of saving the president's daughter Ashley after she
22:58was kidnapped by a weird cult.
23:00But this time, the insane visuals and the improved intelligence of the enemies will
23:05make your journey even more memorable.
23:09This remake achieved one of the biggest sales numbers in 2023.
23:14And the reasons are very clear.
23:44The Dark Presence made me write a horror story that came to life.
23:56It wore the face of an old woman.
23:58Behind the mask was pure darkness.
24:02The story would make it strong enough to escape the Dark Place.
24:06But there was a weapon to use against the Dark Presence.
24:09A light switch.
24:10The clicker.
24:12To save Alice, I needed to enter Cauldron Lake.
24:16Dive deeper.
24:21I need to escape before I lose my mind.
24:25I need to write a new story.
24:27A hero to help me.
24:30The Dark Presence is out there, hunting me.
24:36Okay boys, I kept the best for last.
24:39And from the bottom of my heart, I chose this one for the first spot with complete confidence.
24:46The amount of nostalgia that people have for the original installment of this game is insane.
24:52For years, we were waiting for a sequel.
24:55And we got drowned in an ocean of rumors, false reports and fictional hopes.
25:01I remember hearing about Alan Wake 2 in 2014 and 2015, but it felt like a dream that couldn't be achieved.
25:08However, that dream came true after 13 years.
25:12And Alan Wake 2 is here.
25:14And it literally looks better than ever.
25:17The visuals are breathtaking.
25:19And the story is intriguing, mystical and keeps us interested in how it's going to end.
25:25The ability to play with two characters also gives a new perspective on how you can shape the events and predict your fate.
25:33Alan here is trying to finish a novel that he forgot he even wrote.
25:37And if he fails to do so, he will remain stuck in this alternate dimension forever.
25:43I don't want to spoil the experience for you, but I can assure you that it's worth it.
25:48The only unfortunate aspect is that the game is not yet getting the sales that it deserves.
25:54Probably because the physical versions are not available yet.
25:58And also because the game is exclusive to Epic Games and you can't buy it on Steam.
26:02I don't know if things will change in the future, but this game is definitely among the best releases of the entire year.
