Fear Thy Neighbor S10E03 Better Get to Running

00:00When you've called a place home for decades, it's easy to fall into routine.
00:11They live beside an older couple for years who they got along with.
00:14Change doesn't come easy when you're setting your ways.
00:19He was just wanting to start building his life.
00:22What a racket.
00:25And that can lead to trouble.
00:29What the hell are you doing?
00:30That was kind of like oil and water.
00:31They don't mix.
00:32I told you that dog was dangerous.
00:33They just were not good neighbors.
00:34It was quiet at one house and there's always something going on at the other.
00:35It's my property.
00:36Knock it off.
00:37They heard this pop, pop.
00:38And they opened the door.
00:39I've had enough.
00:40You show no respect.
00:41I was like, oh my gosh.
00:42Would someone really shoot me over something like this?
00:43Better get to running.
00:44Stay with us, please.
00:45I want you.
00:46I'm telling you.
00:47I'm telling you.
00:48I'm telling you.
00:49I'm telling you.
00:50I'm telling you.
00:51I'm telling you.
00:52I'm telling you.
00:53I'm telling you.
00:54I'm telling you.
00:55I'm telling you.
00:56I want you.
00:57I'm telling you.
01:01I know what you did.
01:03Get out of my neighborhood.
01:04Stay away from my wife.
01:05Close the ground now.
01:19The countryside on the outskirts of Hagerstown, Indiana is filled with rich farmland and peace-abiding neighbors.
01:26It's more of a rural area.
01:28A few houses here and there, but mostly farms and farm fields.
01:32Everybody is just in a big family or group or whatever.
01:37Everybody knows everybody else.
01:39And that's just the way small towns are.
01:41Hagerstown, Indiana attracts young people and retirees looking for quiet country living.
01:48Billy Wilson is a retired Vietnam veteran.
01:53He and wife Mabel have lived in the same house for nearly four decades.
01:58Residing with them is their adopted stray cat, Elsa.
02:03Wow, you get a good deal?
02:05A real bargood.
02:10Billy and Mabel live beside a farm.
02:12Bargood.
02:16Billy and Mabel lived beside an older couple for years who they got along with.
02:20But when their old acquaintances sell their home, new neighbors move in.
02:31Mom, can I go next?
02:33Hon, work before play.
02:35Too late.
02:36I told you they'd love go-karts.
02:39Rochelle Southard and Casey Simpson have just arrived at Brick Church Road.
02:44Rochelle is a health care worker with two children from a previous relationship.
02:49She was young, pretty, long hair.
02:52She had two children, Gavin and Emma.
02:55And, you know, she was a young mom and she kind of reminded me of myself a little bit.
03:01She's recently reconnected with her high school crush, Casey.
03:04Casey, he's pretty much raising them kids out of his own.
03:07It's kind of neat, though, you know, seeing a young guy take on a family that's not his.
03:12See what he's doing? Two hands on the wheel.
03:14I want you to be doing that. Always do that.
03:17I saw him use real patience with the kids, putting them on the four wheelers and stuff.
03:22He would show them how, you know, what to do and what not to do.
03:26Casey is a jack of all trades with a passion for racing cars.
03:30He would just take off and go and he would pass everybody and win.
03:35He's got trophies at home.
03:42When he's not racing, Casey loves working on the house.
03:45We have to do this.
03:47Yeah, we gotta do this, buddy. You called poop duty. You're on poop duty.
03:50You know, he was looking at doing different projects in the house and yard in the back.
03:55He was just wanting to start, you know, start building his life with a Rochelle.
04:02Someone who looks after his property is just the kind of neighbor the Wilsons were hoping for.
04:10Howdy, neighbors.
04:12Our last neighbor mentioned the coop had a leaky roof.
04:16We got some leftover shingles if you need them.
04:19Actually, that would be incredible. I was just thinking about what to do next.
04:22Actually, that would be incredible. I was just thinking about what to do next.
04:24At the beginning, I was told that everything was pretty good.
04:29I mean, I don't think that they had cookouts and stuff, but it was at least peaceful.
04:34Billy Wilson. Nice to meet you.
04:36Hi, Casey.
04:37Yeah.
04:38This is Rochelle.
04:39Rochelle.
04:40Gavin M.
04:41Hi.
04:42I'm Maple. Hi.
04:43Pleased to meet you.
04:45But the goodwill won't last long.
04:49I'm going to shoot you all.
04:53The young family settles into their new home.
04:58And they make a lot more noise than the Wilsons are used to.
05:05What a racket.
05:07Casey had the ATVs and cars back there at the garage and all that kind of stuff.
05:12He was working on something all the time, so it was quiet at one house and there's always something going on at Casey's house.
05:21When night falls, the elder couple's patience is truly tested.
05:25Oh, no.
05:41What's going on?
05:43Don't you hear that?
05:50What are they doing?
05:52Some kind of party.
05:56I know that they were shooting off fireworks.
06:00He had a ping-pong table out there.
06:02He had a drum set out there.
06:04Casey likes to have a good time when he parties, and he can be a little reckless.
06:09Casey was riding in his four-wheeler in his yard at, like, two in the morning, and he had had a couple drinks, I think, and he wrecked the four-wheeler in his own yard.
06:25You guys good?
06:28Very good.
06:30Yet when a police officer stops by, it's not to ask Casey to keep it down.
06:36See you later.
06:38Ladies, bye.
06:39Hey! Okay.
06:47The next morning, Casey has some cleaning up to do.
06:51While Billy is looking for an explanation.
06:55You had a party last night.
06:57Yeah, Rochelle got off work at midnight, so we started a little late.
07:01Oh, I saw a policeman.
07:03He knew the Hagerstown officer. I mean, he lived in that area all of his life, so I'm sure that he knew some of the Hagerstown and some of the county guys.
07:11And whatever, I mean, it's not illegal to go to a party in uniform.
07:15I guess it depends on what kind of party it is.
07:17Must be nice to have friends like that.
07:21I guess, yeah.
07:23Billy was convinced Casey had a special in with police. He thought he was friends with a lot of them.
07:28You fired this bottle rocket last night. It hit my truck.
07:33Oh, man. Hey, I'm really sorry about that. I promise it won't happen again.
07:36I'd appreciate that.
07:38Bottle rockets don't exactly go straight. They can wiggle around.
07:43The wind can get them, so they did not aim it at his house.
07:49How'd it go?
07:57I don't know.
07:59I don't know.
08:01How'd it go?
08:13The next time Casey has a get-together, he moves it out of the yard so he doesn't bug his neighbors. But it doesn't help.
08:19Okay, get ready. I got a whole other box to fire off.
08:21Woo!
08:27They decided to take the fireworks out in front, probably because Wilson complained about him doing it in their backyard.
08:35What the hell?
08:37Casey's new party spot makes things even worse between the households.
08:41Mabel. This is desecration.
08:44It turns out he's setting off fireworks on sacred ground.
08:48Now don't start something.
08:51What the hell are you doing?
08:54What's the problem?
08:56This is a graveyard. A cemetery. Have you no respect?
09:00What? What are you talking about?
09:02He comes out accusing Casey and his friends of being disrespectful to the dead that nobody even knew were there except Wilson.
09:11There's nothing in the area that you would look at it and instantly know it's a cemetery. It's not like a normal one with large grave markers.
09:21Look, I was trying to be a good neighbor and brought it away from the house.
09:23Look! Look at this burial plaque. Look!
09:27At what?
09:29These are soldiers.
09:32They fought for our freedom. I fought in Vietnam.
09:36For people like you? Now show some damn respect!
09:41What the hell is going on?
09:44What the hell is going on?
09:48When you put two of those together, then you got a bigger problem.
09:52It was kind of like oil and water. They don't mix.
09:55What the hell is going on?
09:58What the hell is going on?
10:01What the hell is going on?
10:04What the hell is going on?
10:06Casey found out that Billy had been in the service, had been in Vietnam.
10:13He thought that he just used that as an excuse to be mean and nasty.
10:19Oh, too bad, huh?
10:21You left the window open.
10:23That's alright, I'll get it later.
10:25Can we play inside?
10:30Maybe later.
10:32Let's go inside first. We got groceries.
10:33After the recent blowout, Casey and Rochelle decide it's best to avoid their neighbors.
10:39If they was talking, it wouldn't be the greatest conversation to be in.
10:43Since neither one of them liked the other one.
10:46The Wilsons feel the same.
10:50Billy and Mabel both described their new neighbors as loud.
10:56They just were not good neighbors.
10:58But Casey and Rochelle aren't interested in what the Wilsons think.
11:01They are focused on their family.
11:04So, we got some big news.
11:07Really? What?
11:09I got a brand new job.
11:11That's cool.
11:13He ended up finding a new way to make better money and be home more.
11:18He became a truck driver, a hot shot driver.
11:21So he had to drive with his own truck and trailer.
11:24And mommy is going to quit her job so we can spend more time together at home.
11:29Yes!
11:31There will be some other kids here too.
11:34So I can make some pocket money.
11:36Rochelle babysat for some friends of hers.
11:39And then we had gotten our two little foster boys.
11:43And she babysat for us.
11:45Basically we just want to be home with you guys. Spend more time together, huh?
11:48I think Casey liked being the dad figure to them.
11:52He always said that he didn't want to have children.
11:55And I think this was a way he didn't have to.
11:57He had a girlfriend that already had kids.
11:59And he loved them like his own.
12:04It turns out, Casey and Rochelle's new work arrangements are an adjustment for everyone.
12:15Billy and Mabel had to endure even more disturbance.
12:18Not only did they feel they were living next door to a scrap yard,
12:21but now there was a bunch of noisy kids next door which disturbed their peace even more.
12:25Tensions rise when Casey's chickens run into Wilson's yard.
12:29Casey's chickens and things like that would get on Billy's ground.
12:33Oh! The chicken!
12:35You just can't tell a chicken, don't go there, stay over here.
12:38They don't comprehend real good.
12:45And just when the Wilsons think things can't deteriorate further,
12:49the Simpsons welcome a new family member, Seuss.
12:52He is a pretty big muscular dog and he is scary looking.
12:57That's a good boy. Come here.
13:00Billy describes Casey training his dogs in his yard by holding up a rope
13:04and having Seuss jump and hang from it.
13:09Why would he get a dog like that?
13:11To scare people.
13:13Come here.
13:19Seuss may be well trained, but when Casey's not home, the animal roams free.
13:24And that spells trouble for the Wilsons' cat, Elsa.
13:28Seuss chased the cat, the cat would run.
13:38I told you that dog was dangerous.
13:42Billy and Mabel did not like Casey's dog.
13:45Billy thought that the pit bull breed was unpredictable and Mabel had a fear of this dog.
13:55Trouble carries over to the local gun range both families like to frequent.
14:00Nice shot, Casey.
14:03Billy visited the local rifle range to shoot recreationally.
14:10Damn dog.
14:12Casey, a little help here?
14:14Seuss, stop.
14:16Get him away from me.
14:18It's okay, it's okay.
14:20You people.
14:21You people.
14:23Seuss was growling and barking at him and he felt like Casey sicked him on him.
14:28Hey, you're a good boy. It's okay, you're a good man.
14:33The stress is too much for Billy, but as a retired veteran, he has access to help.
14:44Billy visited a VA psychologist to ask for advice on how to deal with his neighbor.
14:47Billy suffered from PTSD from his experiences in the Vietnam War.
14:51Hi, honey.
14:54What did the doctor say?
15:02Whenever he confronts me, just stay calm and count from ten.
15:11Don't let him get to you.
15:18It's not long before these wise words are put to the test.
15:30When Billy was at the corner of his property, the dog was charging at him.
15:34Stop.
15:36Seuss, get out of here.
15:39I'm so sorry about that. I trained him to protect the property.
15:42Casey's intervention opens a new front in the battle.
15:44I'm not on your property.
15:47Well, the previous owner said that the property ended here.
15:52Wilson, he thought the driveway was his and part of the grass on the side.
15:57I've lived here for 35 years. This has always been my land.
16:02Now, you and your dog can get out of here.
16:06That would be a trigger for Billy.
16:08He's possessive and if he takes a step back, he's going to kill him.
16:12He's possessive and if you take something away from him, that would trigger him, yes.
16:17Look, Billy, I'm not looking for trouble.
16:27I got a better idea. I'm going to call the sheriff.
16:31Look, we don't have to call the sheriff.
16:34Billy called the local sheriff's department to complain about Casey's dog coming onto his property.
16:40Uh-huh.
16:43Okay, I will do that. Thank you. Thank you very much.
16:50What'd they say?
16:52Sheriff's office said I could do whatever I need to do to protect myself.
17:02Billy is determined to defend his homestead.
17:07And Casey isn't going to allow the Wilsons to push his family around.
17:12Both men are content to keep their distance from each other.
17:17Okay, um, mom, do you have an ace?
17:22But their pets don't understand boundaries.
17:25Mabel's cat was often spotted on Casey's property.
17:27And Casey's dog was often spotted roaming around on Billy and Mabel's property.
17:32It's a recipe for disaster.
17:42Elsa!
17:45Get out of here!
17:57Who was that?
17:59I don't know. Stay here.
18:01They heard this pop-pop and they opened the door.
18:09Zeus?
18:10And Zeus is whining and bleeding.
18:21You shot my dog? Are you crazy?
18:24It was on our property!
18:26You're a crazy old man! I'm going to break your arms and your legs!
18:29I didn't know it would escalate to something like this.
18:33Obviously, they rushed him to the vet's office,
18:36and then they also called the Wayne County Sheriff's Department,
18:39and they came out and did an investigation.
18:42Casey and Rochelle called the local police after Zeus was shot.
18:45However, Billy and Mabel called the Sheriff's Department,
18:48as they do not trust the local police.
18:50Each neighbor has a different story to tell.
18:53Look, I've complained about that pit bull again and again.
18:57Your dispatch told me I could protect myself.
18:59That is bull! He's lying. He is lying!
19:02Wilson claimed that he was on his front porch
19:05and the dog was coming at him from Casey's house, so he shot him.
19:09He's lying! He's lying!
19:11Casey told the police,
19:13look at my dog, he's shot in the butt.
19:16You know, he couldn't have been running toward Wilson to get shot in his butt.
19:19Your dog came on my property!
19:21After your cat comes on mine!
19:23Shut up! Shut up!
19:25You are lucky authorities are here!
19:27You are crazy!
19:29Shut up!
19:35That's where he shot him.
19:37Billy shows the police where he took aim at the dog.
19:39It's clearly on his land.
19:41Wilson claimed they were from the bullets
19:44that went through Zeus and hit the ground.
19:48He was just shooting the dog because it was on his property.
19:51Yet the bullet wounds suggest that Zeus was retreating when he was shot.
19:54So the threat was already gone.
19:56Police leave without laying any charges.
19:59Mr. Wilson was not arrested or charged
20:03related to the incident for shooting Zeus
20:06because he was on his property at the time it happened.
20:11Look, my advice,
20:14keep your dog on a leash and call us if there's any trouble.
20:20The incident only heightens animosity between the neighbors.
20:30Zeus survives the shooting,
20:32but the damage is done.
20:40Mom, he was basically shooting at my family.
20:42He was telling me what happened and I was like, oh my gosh.
20:46Yeah, we were inside the house.
20:48She said if he had missed and shot into the house,
20:51he could have come through the wall and shot one of the kids.
20:56Their bedrooms are like right there.
20:57I feel like the police failed that day.
21:02They should have arrested him.
21:04You're not allowed to just shoot an animal.
21:06Look, there's no way around it.
21:08We have to build the fence.
21:10He was tired of the neighbor doing what he does,
21:13being mean to his animals and stuff,
21:15so he decided he'd put a fence up.
21:17Casey is not one to waste time.
21:20Work on the fence commences immediately.
21:22Casey was ready to go to buy the supplies
21:27to install a fence that day,
21:30and he also grabbed some tools
21:33to start digging a hole to put a post up
21:37to mark the property line.
21:39Oh my God, you really weren't kidding.
21:42By the end of this weekend, bye-bye Billy.
21:45I can't wait.
21:47A fence like a big one
21:49so Wilson couldn't see anything over at their house.
21:52But Billy has plans of his own.
21:58Hon?
22:00There was a shrub line that went down
22:02and kind of divided both of the properties.
22:05Rochelle said they caught him out
22:08cutting on their bushes that run between the two properties.
22:11What is he doing?
22:13Hey! Hey! Stop it!
22:17What are you doing?
22:19I wouldn't come on your property and do that, huh?
22:21This is my property.
22:23I'm going to build a fence to keep your dog out.
22:25I'll build the damn fence, but it's my property.
22:27Knock it off!
22:29No, it ain't.
22:31We've talked about this. The property line's over there.
22:33That's where I'm building my fence.
22:35Billy and Casey could never agree
22:37on where the property line was located.
22:39There's another situation
22:41where Casey's infringing on his space,
22:43trying to take advantage of him.
22:48I'm calling the surveyor.
22:51Call him.
22:53They had to get a survey
22:55to know exactly where the line was at.
22:58Casey isn't going to wait
23:00to keep his family safe from Billy.
23:02He invests in some extra security.
23:06I do know that Casey did install
23:08surveillance cameras on the house
23:10because they were afraid of Billy's threats.
23:12Aw. Thank you, babe.
23:15But until that fence is built,
23:17I'm not letting the kids play outside.
23:19Okay? No more ATVs.
23:23Okay.
23:24Casey and especially the kids
23:26probably felt scared
23:28not being able to play outside
23:30because who's to say he wouldn't
23:32shoot one of the kids on accident?
23:34Billy hopes the property issue
23:36will get sorted once and for all.
23:38Billy called a surveyor,
23:40and the surveyor came out,
23:42surveyed the property.
23:44So this will prove to Casey
23:46that this is our property line?
23:48Yep.
23:50Then we put up a fence,
23:52and no more dog.
23:54Mm-hmm.
23:58But things don't work out in Billy's favor.
24:02The survey sides with Casey.
24:06Evidently, Billy didn't like that response.
24:11What's the matter?
24:13That kid doesn't know a damn thing.
24:15Who are you calling?
24:17I'm calling somebody
24:19who knows how to do a damn survey.
24:21So he ultimately called another surveyor
24:24Jack, I need a favor.
24:26Can you send a surveyor to my place?
24:29Next Wednesday?
24:31Okay.
24:33Great, I'll see you then.
24:35Until salvation arrives,
24:37the Wilsons are forced to look
24:39at their neighbors a while longer.
24:41And what they see out the window
24:43drives Billy over the edge.
24:45Maybe.
24:47Look!
24:49Rochelle is on her four-wheeler,
24:51and so while she's riding there,
24:52she finds trash.
24:54And so she's stated that she went over
24:56and picked up trash.
24:58It doesn't matter what she's doing,
25:00Billy is offended.
25:02She's driving over the graves!
25:06Now why would she do that?
25:13The transgression triggers the veteran
25:15and sends him to a dark place.
25:17Because he'd been in the service
25:19and had the flashbacks.
25:23Billy?
25:36Stop it! Get out of there!
25:38And here comes Wilson yelling
25:40and screaming at her.
25:42Get off that thing now!
25:43This time, it's Rochelle who fights back.
25:45Listen, old man.
25:47I've had enough.
25:49I told you this was a graveyard.
25:51And you, you show no respect.
25:53I'm cleaning this place up.
25:56There's trash everywhere.
25:58You show me some respect.
26:01Three, two, one.
26:05One day I'm gonna take care of you.
26:07You and your kids.
26:09What is that supposed to mean?
26:11It means that I'm going to
26:13shoot you all.
26:15He told her she better get in the house
26:17or he's gonna shoot her.
26:19You never knew whether you was
26:21gonna trigger something.
26:32I just thought that was freaking crazy.
26:34And I thought, you know,
26:36why would he do that?
26:38She was probably scared.
26:40Why would he shoot me?
26:41Why would someone really shoot me
26:43over something like this?
26:45When Casey finds out what Billy said,
26:47he flies off the handle.
26:49I don't care.
26:51Billy!
26:53You threatened my girlfriend?
26:55You're asking for trouble.
26:57Enough!
26:59He told him, you know,
27:01you hurt my family and I'll shoot you.
27:05Crazy old man.
27:07Come on.
27:09For the Wilsons,
27:12Billy and Mabel felt like
27:14their peace was being disturbed
27:16and there was just no end in sight.
27:18And their neighbors are sick of it all.
27:20Casey and Rochelle were feeling
27:22very frustrated and on edge
27:24as the events continued to pile up.
27:26It was just one thing after another.
27:28Yet he can't always be at home.
27:30When he's on the road,
27:32Rochelle is on her own.
27:34The surveillance cameras Casey installed
27:36offer some comfort.
27:42But not all the time.
28:03Rochelle thinks she sees
28:05a person in her chicken coop.
28:07She suspected it was Billy
28:09but could never prove it.
28:15Whether it was Billy or not,
28:17the next morning,
28:19she's in for a shock.
28:29I'm sorry.
28:31I'm sorry.
28:33I'm sorry.
28:34I'm sorry.
28:42All of their chickens
28:44wound up dead.
28:47Rochelle suspected that
28:49Billy was somehow to blame
28:51for the chickens being dead.
28:53However,
28:55there was never any evidence
28:57to confirm or deny that
28:59that was correct.
29:01I know what you did.
29:02I'm gonna shoot it!
29:07What if he kills Elsa?
29:10Surveyor's coming Wednesday.
29:12Fence will be up
29:14before anything bad happens.
29:16I promise.
29:23As things escalated,
29:25Casey and Billy were really fixated
29:27on getting this fence up
29:29as soon as possible.
29:31Yet the fence can't be erected
29:33before the property line is settled.
29:35Until then,
29:37both neighbors are left to stew
29:39in their anger.
29:43But the Wilsons' cat Elsa
29:45couldn't care less either way.
29:47She roams wherever she wants.
29:49At one point,
29:51the cat got into their garage.
29:53And after what Billy did to Zeus,
29:55Casey decides to return the favor.
30:01And he just,
30:03fine, you shot my dog,
30:05I'm gonna shoot your cat.
30:07And then Casey took the cat
30:09and put it in Wilson's yard
30:11to make sure he's seen it.
30:13He thought maybe that would
30:15make him shut up
30:17and leave him alone.
30:21And then,
30:23the next day,
30:25the Wilsons' cat Elsa
30:27and the Wilsons' cat Elsa
30:29run away.
30:31Billy!
30:39It's Elsa.
30:41When Mabel finds the cat,
30:43she's extremely upset.
30:47It's okay, Mabel.
30:49It's okay.
30:54Elsa's death
30:56has thrown fuel
30:58on the fire.
31:00The tension on Brick Church Road
31:02reaches a tipping point.
31:04And it all comes to a head
31:06on a quiet Wednesday afternoon.
31:11Uh-huh, there's someone in our yard.
31:14They were wondering
31:16who was in their yard,
31:18so Casey threw on a hoodie
31:20and had his gun
31:22in the front pocket of it
31:24because he knew he had been
31:26in any dealings with Wilson
31:28for a long time.
31:33He walked outside
31:35and found out that he was a surveyor.
31:37Hey.
31:39He was there trying to survey
31:41and find out where their
31:43actual property lines were.
31:45Surveyor, right?
31:47Yeah.
31:48Do you mind doing my property after?
31:50I just want to build a fence.
31:52Sure.
31:53Hey, he's working for me.
31:55Now you back off
31:56and mind your own business.
31:57Well, yeah.
31:58I'm killing cats, too.
31:59You shut my door!
32:00That was self-defense!
32:02In front of the surveyor,
32:03Casey and Billy were bickering
32:04back and forth about past events.
32:06Look, guys, please calm down.
32:07It's not I gotta call the sheriff.
32:09The surveyor kinda tried
32:10to settle him down a little.
32:14As soon as you figure out
32:15the property line,
32:16I'm building my fence.
32:19The search begins
32:20for a metal property line indicator
32:22set in the ground
32:23by the original owners.
32:24The surveyor goes to
32:25the front of the driveway
32:27between Casey and Billy's property
32:28to find the property marker.
32:35Okay, guys,
32:36here's the property line.
32:38His driveway
32:40was basically on Casey's ground.
32:44Billy just lost
32:45the property dispute again.
32:47He's also lost his driveway.
32:49I imagine Billy was very upset
32:50when the marker was uncovered.
32:52He was mad
32:53that he was wrong.
32:54Okay, you're my witness.
32:55I'm gonna build my fence
32:56right on my property line.
32:58No way!
32:59That can't be right!
33:00Mabel, years we've lived here!
33:02Thank you.
33:03Hey, look!
33:04That's wrong!
33:08You better stop!
33:09My property.
33:10Casey said
33:11he's heard the surveyor.
33:12This is where it's at.
33:14Wait a sec.
33:15Your fence can wait.
33:17The surveyor asked Casey
33:18to wait while he goes
33:19to his truck,
33:20but Casey doesn't wait.
33:23Ten.
33:24Nine.
33:25Eight.
33:26You better get your ass
33:27back in the house
33:28before I shoot you!
33:31Oh, yeah?
33:32We're gonna have to get
33:33a bigger bullet
33:34than what you shot my dog with.
33:39Billy made a comment
33:40that they better get him
33:41back in their house
33:42and that he was tired of him
33:43and he couldn't
33:44take him anymore.
33:45Ten.
33:46Nine.
33:48Billy tries to control
33:49his temper,
33:50but this time
33:51he fails.
33:52Five.
33:54Better get to running.
34:13I didn't ever think
34:14it'd escalate this bad.
34:17He literally started
34:19shooting at my son
34:20for no reason.
34:23Woo!
34:25The first shot
34:26raised Casey's arm
34:27and one got him
34:29on his shoulder
34:30in an artery.
34:31As this is happening,
34:32Casey's trying
34:33to just turn around
34:34and hide behind a tree.
34:37Rochelle rushes
34:38to protect her family.
34:40Gavin?
34:42Gavin.
34:43What's going on?
34:44Gotta go to the basement.
34:45What?
34:46Right now.
34:47Rochelle takes Gavin
34:48to the basement
34:49because she's afraid
34:50for his safety.
34:51He's coming at him.
34:52He shot him again
34:53and got him
34:54in his bottom.
34:56Makes it hard to walk
34:57and he fell.
34:59Casey doesn't have time
35:00to defend himself.
35:02As he struggles
35:03to get away,
35:04he loses his gun.
35:05I was surprised
35:06that he didn't
35:07pull his weapon.
35:09But it all happened so fast
35:10and Casey probably
35:12couldn't believe it either.
35:21He's coming.
35:38He just wanted
35:40Casey gone
35:41at that point, I think.
35:43She said
35:44he held the gun
35:45at the door.
35:46She reached forward
35:47and slammed
35:48the big door shut.
35:50Rochelle calls 911.
35:52Please get in here now.
35:54He's trying to shoot me.
35:55I can't stop him.
35:56I have to go.
35:58Somebody's trying
35:59to shoot you.
36:00Let me down.
36:06Who was that?
36:07I don't know.
36:08I don't know.
36:09I don't know.
36:10I don't know.
36:12Police arrive
36:13within minutes.
36:20Get on the ground.
36:22Get down from there.
36:24I called the sheriff.
36:25I'm not budging
36:26until the sheriff comes.
36:27Let me see your hands.
36:28No.
36:29He would not
36:30follow their commands
36:31and stated that
36:32he was waiting
36:33on the sheriff
36:34to arrive.
36:35All this time,
36:36Casey lays on the ground
36:37fighting for his life.
36:39He's still breathing.
36:43Show me your hands.
36:44The responding officers
36:45decide the situation
36:46is urgent
36:47and start approaching Billy.
36:48They want to be able
36:49to give medical care
36:50to Casey
36:51as soon as possible.
36:53Still, they couldn't tell
36:54if he had the gun
36:55in his hand.
36:56Despite Billy's insistence
36:57on the sheriff's presence,
36:58responding officers
36:59are required
37:00to secure the scene.
37:02They arrest
37:03the irate shooter.
37:09♪♪♪♪♪
37:15♪♪♪♪♪
37:21♪♪♪♪♪
37:27Oh, my God.
37:32Casey!
37:34Oh, Casey, stay with me.
37:36Oh, my God.
37:37Oh, I love you, Casey.
37:38Please stay with me.
37:39Casey, help me.
37:41Oh.
37:43Oh.
37:46Stay with us, Casey, please.
37:49I love you.
37:52Oh, my God.
37:56Oh, my God.
38:00Casey is airlifted
38:01to a hospital in Indianapolis.
38:06That night,
38:08he succumbs to his wounds.
38:10I was on the phone
38:11with Rochelle,
38:12and I was crying
38:13the whole time.
38:14I just, all these thoughts
38:15were just running
38:16through my head.
38:17This ain't real,
38:18and tomorrow,
38:19I'll be the mother
38:20of a murdered child.
38:22I was devastated
38:23all for nothing
38:24over a piece of land
38:25that now
38:26neither one of them
38:27are gonna enjoy.
38:30Billy Wilson
38:31is charged
38:32with first-degree murder.
38:33At his trial,
38:34he pleads not guilty.
38:36Mr. Wilson
38:37and his attorney
38:39claimed he shot Casey Simpson
38:42in self-defense,
38:43and that was the defense
38:45they raised at trial.
38:46But there was a witness.
38:48Though he didn't see
38:49the first shots,
38:50the surveyor observed Billy
38:52following Casey as he fled.
38:54I mean, I can't,
38:55I couldn't have asked
38:56for a better witness.
38:58He was right there.
38:59Shot a dog,
39:00shot the owner,
39:02claims self-defense
39:03on both occasions.
39:05Eyewitness testimony
39:07clearly pointed the other way.
39:09When someone's trying
39:10to get away from you,
39:11it's no longer self-defense.
39:15In June 2022,
39:17Billy Wilson is sentenced
39:18to 48 years in prison.
39:21This guy's still alive.
39:23His wife can go see him
39:24in jail.
39:25Casey's mom can't go
39:26visit him any longer.
39:28So justice was not
39:29served in this case.
39:31Don't ever think
39:32your neighbor won't shoot you
39:33if they're threatening it.
39:36Because evidently they will
39:38stay on the police
39:40until they do something
39:42and avoid them at all costs,
39:44avoid the neighbor.
39:47In the quiet, rural community
39:49around Hagerstown,
39:51the wounds still run deep.
39:53The Red Flag Law in Indiana
39:55allows a police officer
39:58to confiscate a person's weapons
40:00if they have reason to think
40:02they're going to do harm
40:03to someone,
40:04they can confiscate
40:05their weapons.
40:06But there's nothing in the law
40:08to hold police accountable
40:09to do so.
40:10So it's up to their own discretion
40:13using that law or not.
40:17I would like for the Red Flag Law
40:20to be changed
40:22and made into a law
40:23that actually works
40:25and holds the police accountable
40:28when they can confiscate weapons
40:30and take weapons from people
40:31that don't need them.
40:32People with PTSD
40:34do not need to own weapons.
40:39I just can't...
40:41I just can't explain
40:42how you feel
40:43when you lose a child.
40:46Especially...
40:49when someone actually
40:50murdered them
40:51because how could someone
40:53dislike your child that much?
40:57It just affects you
40:58so bad every day.
41:04Like you just can't even imagine.
41:11Next time on Fear Thy Neighbor
41:14I'm Rahul.
41:15These are my parents.
41:16Alex and Roel
41:17became friends right away.
41:18Everybody got along fine
41:20in the beginning.
41:21That's when it all went bad.
41:24What's your problem?
41:25Alex was poking the bear.
41:27You are trash.
41:28Well, what's gonna happen next?
