00:00We continue here with the news tonight. There are fast moving developments after the assassination
00:05attempt tonight. Remarkable new images here. The alleged gunman seen climbing to the roof
00:10just minutes before opening fire at that rally. You can actually hear people in the crowd
00:14yelling to an officer pointing him out. And now we learned that law enforcement was actually
00:19using that building as a staging area and how the gunman climbed onto the roof, the
00:23wall outside that building. And ABC's Pierre Thomas tonight with the exclusive interview
00:28with the head of the Secret Service and what she's saying now.
00:32Stunning new video tonight showing the moment Donald Trump's would be assassin climbed onto
00:37the roof of that building just two minutes before he opened fire. You can hear bystanders
00:43desperately trying to alert police. Authorities now using that video as part of the investigation.
00:49And tonight, ABC News has learned that heavily armed local police were stationed inside that
00:54building and Miss Thomas Crooks climbing up the outside of the building to the roof.
00:59The same building was being used as a staging area for local police, according to two law
01:04enforcement officials. And Butler Township officials confirming ABC News' reporting that
01:09a local police officer climbed up the roof and confronted Brooks moments before the shooting.
01:14The officer grabbed hold of the edge of the building, pulled himself up to be able to
01:19look. And according to what he's told me, shooter turned, rifle was pointed at the officer.
01:25The officer defensive move, kind of ducked, fell, lost his grip on the building.
01:31Investigators tonight trying to determine whether roof access had been properly locked
01:34down. The shooter climbing seemingly unimpeded, about 400 feet from the stage with a direct
01:40line of sight on the former president.
01:42Take a look at what happened.
01:45Washington lawmakers demanding answers, calling on the Secret Service director to appear before
01:51Congress. We sat down with Director Kim Cheadle today for an exclusive interview.
01:56What was your reaction when you saw the events unfold on Saturday?
02:00Shock and then concern, obviously, for the former president. This is an event that should
02:06have never happened.
02:07Who is most responsible for this happening?
02:10What I would say is the Secret Service is responsible for the protection of the former
02:13president.
02:14So the buck stops with you?
02:16The buck stops with me. I am the director of the Secret Service. It was unacceptable
02:20and it's something that shouldn't happen again.
02:22The president and Homeland Security secretary said today they had 100 percent confidence
02:27in you, but there are some members of Congress calling on you to resign.
02:31I appreciate the secretary's comments and we're going to continue to be transparent
02:35and communicate with people.
02:37You plan to stay on, absolutely.
02:38I do plan to stay on.
02:40Director Cheadle says she will not wait on an independent review of the security failure.
02:45She says she plans to make immediate changes.
02:47We learned today she's already expanded the tactical or SWAT support for former President Trump.
