00:00Cody Rhodes shoots on his time in AEW, Rhea Ripley is not cleared, and another WWE star
00:07is out for the rest of the year.
00:09I'm Luke Owen and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:15It's kind of weird to think that the current WWE Champion was once the face and one of
00:19the founding fathers of WWE's biggest competition since WCW.
00:23I was live on air reviewing an episode of Raw when the news broke that Cody Rhodes would
00:27not be re-signing with All Elite Wrestling and was heading back to WWE.
00:32News that was so big, everyone forgets that's the same day that Steve Austin was announced
00:36to be heading back to the ring for WrestleMania.
00:38There has been a lot of scuttlebutt about Cody in AEW towards the end of his run.
00:43Oli used to call it the Codyverse, going in Raw called it Cody Island, this place that
00:48felt separate from everything else the company was doing.
00:51He also had a John Cena-esque relationship with the crowd, pushed as a babyface but booed
00:56as a heel.
00:57Sometimes in jest, sometimes with tongue placed firmly in cheek, but sometimes it was real.
01:01The fan backlash to the Cody Souls racism promo was very real.
01:06Cody returned to WWE for WrestleMania 38 to face Seth Rollins and quickly became the company's
01:12hottest babyface act.
01:13The actual opposite to John Cena in that he was pushed as a babyface and adored as a babyface.
01:18And he headed straight to the top of the card to main event two consecutive WrestleManias
01:22and win the WWE Championship in what could be argued as the best Mania main event of
01:27all time.
01:29His time in WWE has been so good that no one really asks anymore, well what happened in
01:34AEW then?
01:35He told Variety a couple of years ago that money and creative control were among the
01:39reasons for leaving, but ultimately it was just time to move on.
01:43But in a new interview with Chris Van Vliet, Rhodes opened up a bit more about his time
01:47in All Elite Wrestling and gave some thoughts on a certain section of its fanbase.
01:52He said,
01:53I just remember AEW lovingly.
01:55And I also knew I was leaving.
01:56I knew it was a season.
01:58I knew this wasn't going to last and I knew there was something greater for me out there.
02:02He compared his relationship with the AEW fans to the iconic line from Christopher Nolan's
02:06The Dark Knight, you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the
02:10villain.
02:11Saying, I'm not comparing myself to Batman, but there is a piece of it that's really
02:14important.
02:15To certain fans from the AEW fandom, they need the story to be, they didn't want me.
02:21They pushed me out.
02:22They need, he was bad.
02:23They need that story.
02:24They need me to be the villain.
02:26However, he remained proud of his time in AEW, talking about the original All In and
02:31the first Double or Nothing, and added regardless of any petty squabbles, I will always have
02:36a love for it.
02:37I got to wrestle Brodie Lee's final match.
02:39I got to lead people, young people behind the scenes.
02:42I will always have a love for it.
02:44And those petty squabbles might be in relation to the current AEW Tag Team Champions, The
02:49Young Bucks.
02:50But before we get into that, I would like to make an important and exciting announcement.
02:54I want to thank everyone who has asked for Cutscene to come back, my video essay series
02:58about stories from movie productions.
03:00And I can now confirm that Cutscene is coming back this Friday.
03:05My first video will be about how Disney lied to you about Toy Story 2, and I'll be doing
03:09a live Instagram Q&A about it today.
03:12So head on over there and give me some cues for my A's.
03:15And if you're not sure what Cutscene is, here's a trailer from what I did last year
03:18where I focused specifically on video game movie adaptations.
03:42Back to Cody now and those petty squabbles.
04:03CVB pushed him to give some more details about what led to his leaving All Elite Wrestling
04:08outside of it being the end of a season.
04:10And he highlighted something from The Young Bucks' book Killing The Business.
04:14In that book, Matt and Nick Jackson talk about how Rhodes was the last member of the Elite
04:19to put pen to paper on his AEW deal.
04:22The suggestion was that Rhodes was unsure about All Elite Wrestling, and was weighing
04:26up his options on whether to roll the dice on AEW, stick with Ring of Honor, or go back
04:31to WWE.
04:32And Rhodes does not like that narrative.
04:35He said, I hated that in the Young Bucks book, they said I was the last to the signing.
04:40Because that's a big thing.
04:42Some of the AEW defenders who don't realise they're turning people off to their product
04:46more than they're turning people on.
04:47That's one of the things they always cite, oh, he was the last.
04:51He wasn't that big a deal to the origin, no.
04:54This guy here, who's off camera, was the first person to ever meet Tony.
04:58And he met him in a vetting process for all of us.
05:01So yes, I guess I was the last, and yes I had different thoughts and it's not incorrect
05:05at all what they said.
05:07Yeah, it's not incorrect, but I was just in on it as well as anyone else.
05:12Rhodes has always said that he has respect for the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and Tony
05:15Khan.
05:16He said of Khan in that Variety article from two years ago, his name is going to be in
05:20the history books as someone who helped to bankroll and support this entire alternative
05:25and revolution that AEW became.
05:28But there is clearly more to the story.
05:30Rhodes said in that Chris Van Vliet interview, how AEW ended was terrible, really, and people
05:35are going to write books later and these stories are going to get out there.
05:39And then it's going to be a whole new ballgame.
05:43What do you make of Cody's comments?
05:44He said that they are accurate, he was the last to sign, he did think about going back
05:47to WWE, and his issues seem to be more about the fan narrative of that.
05:52So what do you think?
05:53Let me know in the comments below.
05:55Sticking with top WWE names, Rhea Ripley made her return to WWE last week to sort out this
06:00Domin Live situation, and staked her claim to Morgan's world title on this past Monday's
06:05Raw for a match at Summerslam.
06:07But a few have noted that Ripley hasn't got physical in her return.
06:12And that would be because, according to PWInsider, she isn't medically cleared to wrestle yet.
06:17They add that the original plan was for Ripley to return at either Summerslam itself or the
06:22Raw after Summerslam, the WRAS if you will.
06:25However, Ripley was confident that she would be able to wrestle at Summerslam, so the call
06:29was made to bring her back early.
06:31But as it stands, Rhea Ripley still isn't cleared to wrestle.
06:36And this ties into Fightful Select's report about Ripley's return, which was that WWE
06:40were hopeful for her to feature on TV before Summerslam.
06:44And speaking of Fightful Select, they report that the reason Pete Dunne has gone into a
06:47feud with Sheamus is because of his tag partner Tyler Bate's injury.
06:51They note the call was made for the feud to start once news came back that Bate was injured,
06:55and Fightful write, Bate is not expected to return this year.
06:59Which means that Tyler, Tyler Bate, Tyler Bate, Tyler, Tyler Bate will be back for the
07:03Netflix era of WWE, and he might not be the only return.
07:08Since the announcement of the Netflix deal for WWE, there has been a lot of online speculation
07:12that WWE could revive the WCW brand as another show for the platform.
07:17This speculation was exacerbated when WWE started to file for WCW PPV names like Super
07:23Brawl.
07:24WWE, then WWF, did try to keep the WCW name alive when they purchased it in 2001, but
07:29it had been poisoned for a few years by that point and they struggled to find a network
07:32to put the show on.
07:34Not helped by a disastrous Raw main event where WCW Champion Booker T defended the title
07:38against Buff Bagwell, which the Tacoma, Washington crowd dumped on.
07:41That match is the only reason I know that Tacoma, Washington is a place.
07:44Let me know in the comments if you're from Tacoma, Washington.
07:48A report from WrestleNomics' Patreon page earlier this month had some estimated WWE
07:52shop statistics, which noted that the NWO shirt is still a big seller for WWE.
07:57In the estimations provided, the NWO is the 10th biggest selling brand, almost outselling
08:03Liv Morgan at 9th and Kevin Owens at 8th.
08:06The NWO shirt is the 10th best selling shirt, only shortly falling behind Steve Austin's
08:10316 shirt and the new Wyatt Sixx t-shirt.
08:13And now Jeff Jarrett, the most famous member of the NWO, thinks this could be why WWE could
08:19possibly consider bringing back the brand.
08:22However, he added, the reality is that we are 23 years removed from the brand being
08:26on television.
08:27The NWO still sells a boatload of merchandise, but WCW hasn't sold, to my knowledge, much
08:33of anything.
08:34A couple of retro shirts here and there or something to that effect.
08:36I just don't see a tremendous value there.
08:39Would you like to see a WCW revival, or do you think it will end up like their dreadful
08:43attempt to revive ECW in the mid-2000s?
08:45I actually made a whole video about who really killed WWECW, which is linked to in the video
08:50description.
08:51Perhaps WWE could care more for WCW than AEW does for Ring of Honor.
08:56At least that's the perception from fans.
08:58But it's not just fans.
09:00Former owner of Ring of Honor, Keri Silken, recently said, it's like no one cares at
09:04all.
09:05I don't care how much money Tony Khan has, it's not being treated very well.
09:09But maybe that's about to change.
09:11Fightful Select report that we're told that ROH is likely to have more care given to it
09:16as it relates to AEW's television negotiations with Warner Bros. Discovery.
09:20Fightful were pointed to the fact that ROH has dedicated TV bookings planned, so it's
09:25not just taped after Dynamite or Collision, and that Mansoor and Mace were signed specifically
09:30to ROH deals.
09:31One source told Fightful Select that Ring of Honor having dedicated TV filming dates
09:36will improve the creative, as you can film multiple episodes in one day similar to what
09:40TNA does.
09:41Perhaps more stunningly, the report also claims that Ring of Honor champions like Mark Briscoe,
09:46Atlantis Jr. and Wheelie Yuta could appear more regularly on Ring of Honor shows.
09:51Which is great news for Kate from Fightful, who talks about that a lot on Twitter.
09:55Oh, and lastly, Joe Hendry was on NXT last night because they said his name and he appeared.
10:00Just added that in for WrestleTalk.com's Amanda Savage, who thinks he's handsome
10:03and she's not wrong.
10:05Now get ready for the relaunch of Cutscene by watching this episode where I talk about
10:09the original plans for the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie.
