Eric Garner Remembered on the 10th Anniversary of His Death
It has been 10 years since the chokehold death of Eric Garner at the hands of New York City police officers made “I can’t breathe” a rallying cry. On Wednesday, Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, led a march honoring her son on Staten Island. That's where Garner died after being restrained by Officer Daniel Pantaleo on July 17, 2014.

00:00I still want to bring up about keeping my son's name relevant because he should not
00:26have died that day.
00:29I should not be here talking to you today.
00:33I should be doing what I usually do.
00:35He should be doing what he usually do.
00:37I would like to see more justice.
00:41I want to see more accountability when there's wrongdoing, although we know that the police
00:47have a tough job.
00:48But when there's wrongdoing, when we have those bad apples in the police department,
00:53we have to get rid of them.
00:54Because we don't want to see another innocent citizen get hurt by the police or gun violence,
01:02either one.
01:03I am still commemorating my son, and I will for the rest of my life.
01:08I want people to remember him and remember that he was the one that helped get laws changed,
01:13to help implement laws, who was the sacrificial lamb, and that because of him, others have
01:21benefited.
01:23There's more video cameras when people are doing wrong.
01:26There's more cams on the police officers.
01:29And I think we've made steps in the right direction.
01:33But it's still so much more work to do.
01:42Today's march is about Eric Garner.
01:44It's 10 years after his death when he basically stated that he can't breathe.
01:5010 years later, Gwen is still fighting until we get equality from this world.
01:55You understand?
01:55She's going to continue fighting, Gwen Carr.
01:58She's a strong, determined woman.
01:59And that's why we're all here, gathered here today, to show support and to give back the
02:05things that she's fighting for.
02:06We want it too.
