00:02:27whose kennel comprises some of the finest campaigners in America.
00:02:33That's fine. Now, smile, please.
00:02:37Cup to your right.
00:02:39That's great.
00:02:41Sorry, boys, but these are not trophies.
00:02:45Hold it right there.
00:02:48Thank you, thank you so much.
00:02:49Can we go now? I can stand one dog, but this bedlam is getting on my nerves.
00:02:54Don't be impatient, darling.
00:02:55We'll have plenty of time for dinner.
00:03:14Hold the gun.
00:03:15Two and a half.
00:03:17Show him.
00:03:18Event number 728.
00:03:20A blue ribbon won by Gillespie of Hetherstone.
00:03:23John D. Devoler is runner-up, and Midlothian gentleman receives the special.
00:03:28Better luck next time, Mr. Vance.
00:03:32Don't be downhearted, Captain. You're still champion with me.
00:03:35Maybe we'll have better luck in Italy, huh?
00:03:37Tough luck, Vance. I was hoping to have the pleasure of greeting you tomorrow.
00:03:40Oh, thank you very much, Mr. Cole.
00:03:41Perhaps you'll get stiffer competition from Sir Thomas MacDonald.
00:03:45Perhaps.
00:03:45Well, I'll borrow Mr. Maughan for a second.
00:03:47But, Miss May, you know Mr. Hatcher don't want anyone to bully his dog.
00:03:50Come along and protect him, if you like.
00:04:00That's enough, Sir Thomas. I wouldn't take off another whisk.
00:04:04I think you're right, Sandy.
00:04:06Get ready. Hold it.
00:04:08Thanks.
00:04:09There you are, Gilly old laddy.
00:04:10Hello, Hilda.
00:04:11Hello, Tom.
00:04:12Well, what's the idea?
00:04:13Can't we do a little party?
00:04:14Can't we do a little private judging?
00:04:16I don't imagine your uncle would particularly approve of this.
00:04:18I'm sure he wouldn't.
00:04:20Hold him a minute, Sandy. Let's take a good look at him.
00:04:22All right.
00:04:33Well, what do you think?
00:04:35I think it's a pretty close thing.
00:04:37I'm not worried. Eh, Sandy?
00:04:39I think you're very safe, sir.
00:04:41Here we are, sir.
00:04:43What the devil do you think you're doing, Hilda?
00:04:45How do you do?
00:04:46How do you do, sir?
00:04:46I just wanted to prove that you're going to lose money to Tom
00:04:48when these two get into the ring tomorrow.
00:04:50And have you proved it to your satisfaction?
00:04:52So much so that I want you to loan me a thousand dollars to place on Gilly.
00:04:55Hilda!
00:04:56That's a cheek for you.
00:04:57Wants to bet against me with a thousand dollars of my own money.
00:05:00I wasn't asking you for your money.
00:05:02I merely want you to loan me some of mine.
00:05:04As long as I control the purse strings, you're not going to do any betting against me.
00:05:07You'll be grateful that I've saved a few thousands of your fortune someday.
00:05:11But don't raise your hopes too high, Hilda.
00:05:14Bring that dog out here.
00:05:18I shouldn't let him worry you, my dear.
00:05:20You know how I hate him, Tom.
00:05:22The things he's done to me.
00:05:25I despise him.
00:05:26Darling.
00:05:28Now, let's see.
00:05:30Where did I put that?
00:05:31Ah, there it is.
00:05:35Unsolved murders.
00:05:36You know, I almost forgot it.
00:05:39I wouldn't be able to sleep a wink tonight, wondering who murdered who and why.
00:05:43How any intelligent man can read that drivel is beyond me, Brisbane.
00:05:46What time does that Chicago train go?
00:05:48Five o'clock.
00:05:50Well, it's 4.15.
00:05:51Oh, you've got plenty of time.
00:05:51Yes, I know.
00:05:52But I want to get out of here before Archie gets home.
00:05:56Good afternoon, sir.
00:05:57Afternoon.
00:05:58Is my brother at home?
00:06:00Yes, sir.
00:06:00He's upstairs.
00:06:01Tell him I want to see him.
00:06:02Yes, sir.
00:06:05Your taxi's waiting, sir.
00:06:06All right. There's the bag.
00:06:08Did you get those reservations?
00:06:10Yes, sir.
00:06:11And Mr. Archer told me to tell you he wants to see you, sir.
00:06:14Oh, he did, eh?
00:06:16You tell him I don't want to see him.
00:06:18Tell him I said so.
00:06:19In those words, sir?
00:06:20Exactly.
00:06:21Unless you can think of something stronger.
00:06:24Yes, sir.
00:06:26Of course.
00:06:28Of course, it's none of my business, Brisbane.
00:06:30But I wouldn't talk that way in front of Gamble.
00:06:32I don't trust him.
00:06:34I just couldn't resist it.
00:06:36I'd like to see the look on Archer's face when he tells him.
00:06:39I wouldn't.
00:06:40How the deuce can you stand it here?
00:06:42Why, there wouldn't be enough money in the world to compensate me for being
00:06:45Archer Co.'s secretary.
00:06:46Oh, he's not as bad as all that.
00:06:48Say, you'd better be getting along.
00:06:49There's such a thing as carrying loyalty too far.
00:06:51Don't forget, I overheard a few of his choice remarks to you
00:06:54when you dared suggest that you were in love with Hilda and wanted to marry her.
00:06:59I'm afraid you're taking Archer a little too seriously, old man.
00:07:02Did you deliver my message?
00:07:04I thought it best to wait till you were safely away, sir.
00:07:08Do you mind dropping me off?
00:07:09I have an engagement with Hilda for dinner.

00:07:46Gilly's gone.
00:07:47What?
00:07:47And I cannot find him.
00:07:49They've taken him off the bench, sir.
00:07:50Well, he couldn't have got loose.
00:07:58He didn't break that lock himself, either.
00:08:00I haven't been away from that dog for 10 minutes all day, sir.
00:08:03I just went into the restaurant to get a wee sandwich,
00:08:05and when I come back, he was gone.
00:08:07Sir Thomas!
00:08:08Yes?
00:08:10I think we found him, sir.
00:08:11Where?
00:08:12Out in the alley, sir.
00:08:20This way, sir.
00:08:25Gilly!
00:08:27He's dead!
00:08:30Oh!
00:08:33I'll kill the man who did this!
00:08:40Listen, Tom, you mustn't do anything until you're sure, please.
00:08:43I've got my own ideas.
00:08:46Oh, I know Uncle Archer's mean and cruel,
00:08:47but I can't believe he'd do a thing like this.
00:08:59Hello?
00:09:02I'm sorry, but Mr. Archer Coe isn't here.
00:09:05Your dog dead?
00:09:08I'm terribly sorry.
00:09:10I'll try to locate him at once.
00:09:22Go away from me, you!
00:09:26Get out of here!
00:09:28Get out!
00:09:30I suspected it when I saw you together this afternoon.
00:09:32You're nothing but a two-timing...
00:09:34Get out of my apartment!
00:09:38Get out!
00:09:39From now on, it is your apartment!
00:09:41All yours!
00:09:42I'm getting out for good!
00:09:54Ah, Mr. Coe!
00:09:56My dear friend, I...
00:09:57Yes, I see you are.
00:09:59Perdone?
00:09:59Yes.
00:10:00Oh, I am...
00:10:01How do you say it?
00:10:02Panto allegro.
00:10:04I came to see you.
00:10:05I received a cable from Milan authorizing me
00:10:07to complete the deal for your Chinese collection,
00:10:09and confirming the price of $117,000.
00:10:13Means decorations and all that sort of thing
00:10:15from a very grateful government, I suppose.
00:10:17Oh, un momento!
00:10:18But it's no good now, of course.
00:10:19I've changed my mind.
00:10:20Oh, but you have promised me.
00:10:21You can't go back on your word.
00:10:22What will I tell my people?
00:10:23What will I say?
00:10:24Pity you didn't think of this before.
00:10:26You might have been a little more discreet, eh, Grassi?
00:10:28But you have signed a contract with me!
00:10:30Too bad for you!
00:10:30It's still at my home, in my safe!
00:10:32Oh, but you will...
00:10:33Most certainly destroy it!
00:10:35Tonight!
00:10:36I'll tell you what I'll do.
00:10:38I'll give you Miss Dellafield...
00:10:40...for nothing!
00:10:56Hey, Liang!
00:11:15At it again, eh?
00:11:17I was led to believe that a cook's place is in the kitchen.
00:11:19The next time I thought...
00:11:19I have been expecting my dismissal, Mr. Cole.
00:11:22We have served our purpose,
00:11:23these priceless treasures and I.
00:11:26I overheard Mr. Reed saying...
00:11:28...you were preparing to sell this whole collection.
00:11:30You've been listening at the keyhole, have you?
00:11:31You cannot sell them, Mr. Cole!
00:11:34Do you think I would have dishonored my ancestors?
00:11:36Perjured my soul?
00:11:37Cheated my own countrymen to acquire these for you?
00:11:40Had I not believed that you would reverence them as I do?
00:11:43That's the worst of your race!
00:11:44A pack of mawkish sentimentalists about your ancestors!
00:11:47I don't need you tonight!
00:11:48Go on, get out!
00:11:48I would suggest you consider most carefully before you sell.
00:12:49Mr. Cole!
00:12:57Mr. Cole!
00:13:04Breakfast, Mr. Cole!
00:13:06Breakfast!
00:13:19Mr. Reed!
00:13:20Mr. Reed!
00:13:20Mr. Reed!
00:13:23What is it, Gamble?
00:13:24Mr. Cole, Mr. Archer Cole has killed himself.
00:13:27Killed himself?
00:13:28When? How?
00:13:29He's sitting in there, like...
00:13:30...and the door's bolted!
00:13:32You're positive?
00:13:33Yes, sir!
00:13:34In his bedroom!
00:13:35Phone the police!
00:13:36Yes, sir!
00:13:37Phone the police!
00:13:39Yes, sir!
00:13:48Hello?

00:15:07His body was discovered by the butler at 8 this morning,
00:15:10when he took up a breakfast tray!
00:15:12No reason has been advanced for this action, as Mr. Cole was in excellent health,
00:15:15and had no financial troubles!
00:15:17Yes, sir!
00:15:17Yes, sir!
00:15:18Yes, sir!
00:15:18Yes, sir!

00:15:22Yes, sir!
00:15:22Yes, sir!
00:15:23No news has been received from the crew of the absence.
00:15:29Is the land phone still connected?
00:15:30Yes, sir!
00:15:31But it will be disconnected in about 2 minutes, sir!
00:15:33I see!
00:15:40Hello?
00:15:41Hello, Markham!
00:15:42Hello, Vance!
00:15:44I thought you were on your way to Italy!
00:15:46Ha, ha! I am!
00:15:48I say, Markham, uh,…
00:15:49…I just heard about Archer Cole!
00:15:51Yes! Too bad he had to bump himself off like that!
00:15:54Ah, that's why I called you!
00:15:55Are you sure that he did bump himself off?
00:15:58Well, as Butler tells us, he's sitting in a locked room,…
00:16:00…with a revolver in his hand, and a bullet in his head!
00:16:02I don't know what else you'd call it!
00:16:05I don't want to butt into your affairs, but, uh,…
00:16:07…aren't you a bit hasty in jumping to that conclusion?
00:16:09Hasty? Why?
00:16:11Well, if you knew Archer Cole, you would know that suicide…
00:16:14…is almost a psychological impossibility for him!
00:16:16Psychological bosh!
00:16:18A 2 and 2 make 4, don't they?
00:16:20Well, how do you know you have 2 and 2?
00:16:22– Just let me point out to you! – Oh, point out the Statue of Liberty!
00:16:25Say, Vance!
00:16:26Hello?
00:16:28Hello?
00:16:29The land phone has been disconnected, sir!
00:16:31Oh!
00:16:36Uh,… will you have my luggage brought up?
00:16:38Yes, sir!
00:16:39Steward!
00:16:40Uh,… just have them send it ashore! I've…
00:16:42– …decided not to say it! – Sir!
00:16:45Vance, you've been right about a lot of cases in the past,…
00:16:47…but I can't help smiling at you getting off that boat,…
00:16:50…and giving up a swell trip, all because of a hunch!
00:16:54As a matter of fact, Markham, it was more than a hunch!
00:16:56Huh?
00:16:58It just so happened that I talked with Archer Cole only yesterday!
00:17:01What? Where?
00:17:03The Long Island Kennel Club!
00:17:05You know, I can't conceive of a man on the verge of suicide,…
00:17:09…being very deeply concerned over winning a championship at a dog show, can you?
00:17:13No! What do you mean?
00:17:15Simply this!
00:17:16As late as yesterday afternoon,…
00:17:18…Archer Cole was looking forward, with the keenest anticipation,…
00:17:21…to winning a blue ribbon from Sir Thomas MacDonald today!
00:17:24Sir Thomas MacDonald?
00:17:25Say, wasn't it his dog that was found dead last night?
00:17:27Aye!
00:17:28And Archer Cole found dead this morning!
00:17:31You suppose there might be some connection there?
00:17:33I don't know!
00:17:35But if someone were to try to kill Captain McTavish,…
00:17:37…I'd probably turn murderer myself, wouldn't I, Captain?
00:17:44Hello, Mr. Markham!
00:17:45I got your message to hold everything up!
00:17:47What's the idea?
00:17:50Hello, Mr. Vance! Morning, Sergeant!
00:17:52Well, it's been a long time!
00:17:54Several years!
00:17:55I might have known it would be you,…
00:17:57…the world's champion troubleshooter!
00:17:58Now, come on, boys! Come inside!
00:18:01Well, Chief, this is another just-opened shot case!
00:18:05Mr. Reed, the secretary!
00:18:08This is Gamble, the butler!
00:18:10Yes, sir!
00:18:10Mr. Markham, the district attorney!
00:18:12How do you do, sir?
00:18:13And, ah,…
00:18:14…Mr. Vance!
00:18:15– How do you do? – How do you do?
00:18:16Everything just as it was?
00:18:17Well, they said they haven't touched anything!
00:18:19We thought it best to leave everything intact, sir!
00:18:21Good!
00:18:22Where's the room?
00:18:23– Upstairs! – This way, please!
00:18:30You've been in Mr. Coe's service long?
00:18:33About three months, sir!
00:18:34And before that?
00:18:36Why, ah,… unfortunately, I was unemployed, sir!
00:18:39This is it, sir!
00:18:41He's there, all right!
00:18:42Just like I told the police on the phone!
00:18:44I tried the door, found it locked, looked through the keyhole,…
00:18:46…and there he was, dead!
00:18:50I think this is a job for you, Sergeant!
00:18:52Certainly, Mr. Vance!
00:19:00Well, Hennessy,…
00:19:01…what are you standing there for? Your health?
00:19:03– This takes beef! – All right!
00:19:11Oh!
00:19:16Congratulations, Sergeant!
00:19:19What is this, a bedroom, or a museum?
00:19:22More junk here than in a Chinese josh house!
00:19:35I trust I did the right thing, sir, by not breaking down the door!
00:19:39I realized I could be of no help to him!
00:19:41Oh, he's been quite dead for hours!
00:19:43Bumped himself off, that's plain enough!
00:19:45Certainly looks that way, Vance!
00:19:47I'm afraid your trip was spoiled for nothing!
00:19:49I think not, Markham!
00:19:51This may prove far more interesting than a trip to Europe!
00:20:01You carry a gun?
00:20:02No, sir!
00:20:04You?
00:20:05Er,… yes, sir! But only at night, for the protection of the household!
00:20:08Is that it?
00:20:09Why, I…
00:20:11Come on!
00:20:12No, that was Mr. Archer's!
00:20:14But…
00:20:15…he always kept it in a desk drawer, downstairs!
00:20:18I saw it yesterday morning, as I was putting away some papers!
00:20:20Oh, you did, eh?
00:20:22Did Mr. Coe generally keep his windows locked?
00:20:25Why, no, sir!
00:20:26As a matter of fact, he was a great believer in fresh air!
00:20:29Ah, indeed!
00:20:31I wonder if these gentlemen would mind waiting downstairs?
00:20:33Certainly not!
00:20:34I'm sorry we had to damage your door!
00:20:36That's quite all right! It's easily repaired!
00:20:38I'll have it attended to at once, sir!
00:20:40Hennessy, see that no one leaves the house without my permission!
00:20:42All right!
00:20:46It's as plain as a nose on your face!
00:20:48This guy locked himself in here, and blew out his brains!
00:20:51I wish I could agree with you, Sergeant!
00:20:53How the devil could it be anything but suicide?
00:20:57It was all very well for you to theorize before we got here, Vance,…
00:21:00…but now that you've seen this, and there are no signs of a struggle,…
00:21:04…and the door bolted on the inside,…
00:21:06…and no means of entrance to the room,…
00:21:08Ah! Nor the means of entrance!
00:21:10All right, you are, Sergeant!
00:21:12But we can hardly call a second story window a means of entrance!
00:21:19And nothing here that even a human fly could crawl on!
00:21:22So, why should Archer Coe lock his windows?
00:21:24Particularly if he was a fresh air enthusiast!
00:21:26I'm afraid your reasoning is not altogether convincing!
00:21:30Well, perhaps so, but…
00:21:32…doesn't it strike you as rather odd…
00:21:33…that a man should suddenly decide to commit suicide…
00:21:36…while changing from his street clothes to pajamas?
00:21:38Well, why not? A man debating suicide might get partially undressed,…
00:21:41…and walk up and down for hours, trying to make up his mind!
00:21:44Yes, he might walk up and down for hours, but not with one shoe half off!
00:21:48No, Markham,…
00:21:50…something stopped him as he was removing that shoe!
00:21:52This was supposed to suggest suicide, but…
00:21:55…someone miscalculated!
00:21:58But you can't get away from that bolted door!
00:22:00I wish I could!
00:22:02The way you figure it out,…
00:22:04…the man was murdered!
00:22:05As soon as the killer is gone,…
00:22:06…he gets up, goes, and bolts the door,…
00:22:09…plants himself in a comfortable chair, with a loaded gun in his hand, to suggest…
00:22:12…suicide!
00:22:14That's a swell theory!
00:22:21Hello, Gamble!
00:22:23What is this? What's happened?
00:22:25Something terrible has happened, Miss Lake!
00:22:27Hilda!
00:22:28What is it, Raymond? What is it?
00:22:30It's your Uncle Archer, Hilda!
00:22:32He killed himself last night!
00:22:35– Where…? – They're upstairs!
00:22:49Hey, don't touch that body, Miss!
00:22:53Oh, Mr. Vance!
00:22:54How do you do, Miss Lake?
00:22:56This is Mr. Markham, the District Attorney!
00:22:58How do you do?
00:23:00Miss Lake, his co's niece!
00:23:01I'm sorry, Miss Lake, but you mustn't touch anything until the medical examiner arrives!
00:23:05It's against regulation!
00:23:07Is it also against regulations to tell me what's happened?
00:23:09We arrived only a few moments ago. We…
00:23:12…found your uncle, as you see him.
00:23:13It has every appearance of suicide!
00:23:17I doubt it!
00:23:19Do you know of anyone who would have reason to kill your uncle?
00:23:24Yes!
00:23:24I had, for one!
00:23:27Why, Miss Lake?
00:23:28Because he stood in the way of everything I wanted!
00:23:30He made my life miserable, because he held the purse strings!
00:23:34And because…
00:23:35…because he was jealous of every man who came near me!
00:23:39I was afraid of him!
00:23:41Oh, the horrible nights I've spent in this house!
00:23:48Are we to accept your comments as a confession of murder, Miss Lake?
00:23:51– Look here, Markham, that's ridiculous! – Please, Raymond!
00:23:54I think I can handle this situation myself!
00:23:56When we found your uncle, Miss Lake,…
00:23:59…the door was bolted from the inside!
00:24:03Bolted inside?
00:24:06Oh!
00:24:09Maybe he did shoot himself!
00:24:10Can't you make up your mind?
00:24:12Do you know of anyone else who felt as you do about your uncle?
00:24:14Practically everyone he came in contact with!
00:24:16He was ruthless!
00:24:18He wanted his own way in everything!
00:24:20I imagine there are plenty of Chinese who'll be glad to know that his collecting days are over!
00:24:24Ask our cook!
00:24:26I shall!
00:24:28Can you think of anyone else?
00:24:29Well, Uncle Brisbane shared my feelings toward him, I'm sure!
00:24:32Where is this Brisbane guy?
00:24:33Maybe he decided to do something about it!
00:24:35That's impossible!
00:24:37He's on his way to Chicago! He left on the 5 o'clock train yesterday afternoon!
00:24:40He'd be just about getting there by now!
00:24:43Well, you'd probably like to wire him, wouldn't you?
00:24:46Why, yes, of course!
00:24:48Is that all?
00:24:49Before the present, yes!
00:24:56Suppose we check up on Uncle Brisbane on that Chicago train!
00:24:59Won't take me but a minute!
00:25:07Hello?
00:25:08Come on, Snipkin!
00:25:09Get your feet off the boss's desk, and jump down to Grand Central!
00:25:17All right, I get you!
00:25:26Yes, Mr. Heath!
00:25:27Langham Hotel, Chicago?
00:25:30Yes, sir, I'll rush the call!
00:25:31Hold the wire, please!
00:25:33Oh, yes, Mr. Heath!
00:25:35We're expecting Mr. Brisbane Coe this morning!
00:25:37Oh, yes, he… he wired for a reservation last night!
00:25:40Thank you!
00:25:41Goodbye!
00:25:42Yep!
00:25:44He took the 5 o'clock train, all right!
00:25:45Good!
00:25:47You know, there's a few things I'd like to find out about this girl, Hilda Lake!
00:25:51Oh, yes, of course!
00:25:52You know, there's a few things I'd like to find out about this girl, Hilda Lake!
00:25:56Why are you always trying to check up on me?
00:25:58I'm not trying to check up on you, Hilda!
00:26:01I want to help you!
00:26:02Well, you know how I feel about you!
00:26:04You know that I love you!
00:26:06But lately, you seem to have changed!
00:26:08Every time I want to speak to you about marriage, you evade me!
00:26:11What's on your mind?
00:26:13Oh, nothing, nothing!
00:26:15Raymond, I never said I'd marry you!
00:26:17But I thought that now we…
00:26:19Well, that…
00:26:20But I could take you away from here!
00:26:22You might as well know now as later!
00:26:24When all this is cleared up, I'm going to marry Tom McDonald!
00:26:28Oh!
00:26:29Oh, try to understand, Raymond!
00:26:32I'm sorry!
00:26:34Ah, don't tell me!
00:26:35– Come on, don't try to kid us! – Quiet!
00:26:37Suicide, my eye! With the DA himself and Vance on the job?
00:26:39It's suicide, and that's that!
00:26:41Ah, come on! Have a cigar!
00:26:42It's still suicide!
00:26:46Hey, wait a minute!
00:26:49Are you a reporter?
00:26:50No, I'm Sir Thomas McDonald!
00:26:52I'd like to talk to the officer in charge here!
00:26:54Ah! Come on inside!
00:27:00Tom!
00:27:04Why didn't you stay away from here?
00:27:06And leave you to face this thing alone?
00:27:07But you promised me last night you wouldn't come here!
00:27:09Won't you go, please? I can bluff it through!
00:27:11I don't want the police asking you questions!
00:27:13I know all the answers!
00:27:14Oh, but please go, for my sake!
00:27:15Let's forget about it, shall we?
00:27:16It's too late now. In any case, the police are guarding every entrance!
00:27:19Wait a moment!
00:27:21You can cross through that yard and get to your apartment. No one will see you!
00:27:23Take the first boat to England, and I'll join you as soon as I can!
00:27:26Watch out for those newspaper men, Sir Thomas!
00:27:29They're even deadlier than the police!
00:27:31I had no intention of leaving!
00:27:32Ah, good!
00:27:34Oh, by the way, I was sorry to hear about the death of your dog last night!
00:27:37Oh, thanks!
00:27:38You didn't, by any chance, discuss it with Archer Cole, did you?
00:27:42No!
00:27:43If I had, I might have killed him!
00:27:45Well, did you?
00:27:47That's your problem!
00:27:51– I want to see! – Any news, Doctor?
00:27:53– How about a statement? – Give me a chance!
00:27:54Oh, wait a minute!
00:27:56I'm a doctor, not a magician!
00:27:57– Ha, ha! Always pulling funny tricks! – Go on, now! Scram!
00:28:00– All right, I'll listen to you! – Wait a minute, please!
00:28:02– Hello, Doc! – Hello!
00:28:03Hello, Kelsey! Where have you been? Haven't seen you for a long time!
00:28:06Working hard!
00:28:07What kept you so long?
00:28:08Did you walk all the way?
00:28:10You always pick on me at mealtime!
00:28:12I was in the middle of cakes and sausage!
00:28:14What have you got?
00:28:15Just plain suicide!
00:28:17This guy locked himself in a room, bumped himself off!
00:28:19Suicide? Then why didn't you let me finish my breakfast?
00:28:21Hello, Doc!
00:28:22Hello, Markham!
00:28:23All you need is an order to remove the body!
00:28:26If you'd told me that over the phone, I would have sent my assistant!
00:28:28Mr. Markham told me to phone you personally! Don't crab at me about it!
00:28:32I'll give you the approximate hour of the death, if you want it!
00:28:34That's a big heart of you, Doc!
00:28:36And the routine autopsy,…
00:28:37…we can do tomorrow!
00:28:39As it's just a case of suicide!
00:28:41Why do you jump to that conclusion, Doctor?
00:28:44I know a dead man when I see one!
00:28:46– Besides, the door was bolted! – I know! The door was bolted on the inside!
00:28:50But what about the body? Hadn't you better have a look at it?
00:28:53I was going to!
00:28:55I'm a doctor, not a detective!
00:28:57This man is dead, with the bullet hole in his right temple!
00:29:00He's holding a gun in his right hand!
00:29:02Just the kind of wound that might have been self-inflicted!
00:29:05The position is natural,…
00:29:07…and the door was locked on the inside!
00:29:10Well!
00:29:11Let me see!
00:29:12That's strange!
00:29:15Did you find something to disturb you, Doctor?
00:29:17Plenty!
00:29:18There's blood in his mouth!
00:29:20And he's got a skull fracture, from some…
00:29:22…club-like instrument!
00:29:24Now, what about the bullet wound in his temple? There's no blood there!
00:29:28That's so!
00:29:32Gentlemen!
00:29:34When that bullet entered this man's head,…
00:29:37…he had been dead for hours!
00:29:42Can you place the time of his death?
00:29:43I'd say from 8 to 12 hours ago!
00:29:46Would you say that the revolver was placed in his hand before Rigor Mortis set in?
00:29:49Yes!
00:29:51Did he die from the effects of the blow on the head?
00:29:53No!
00:29:53Probably rendering him unconscious for a while!
00:29:55But that wouldn't have killed him!
00:29:57Not powerful enough!
00:29:58The blow didn't kill him, the bullet didn't kill him, and yet he's dead!
00:30:01Suppose we try to find out just what did kill him?
00:30:04Glad you thought of that, Mr. Vance!
00:30:06It's not a bad idea!
00:30:09Perhaps I'd better take another look!
00:30:10Yes, I think that's the way to do it!
00:30:12Let's get the target!
00:30:14All right, boys! Let's pick up these clues, before they get messed up here!
00:30:19Hey!
00:30:20Just a minute, Doc, please!
00:30:24Ready?
00:30:26Give me a hand, Sergeant! Help me lift the body over to the bed!
00:30:29Where do you want to put it?
00:30:30Where do you want to put it?
00:30:32I'll go around the handles, around the body, and over to get that weak spot!
00:30:38All right, now, look at all!
00:30:39A little black powder, here we go!
00:30:41All right, all right!
00:30:43Lift him easy!
00:30:44Easy!
00:30:45Oh, yes, now then!
00:30:47All right, boy!
00:30:47Just hold him all that way!
00:30:48All right, Doc!
00:30:49That's it!
00:30:50There couldn't have been much of a struggle!
00:30:52His hair isn't even messed!
00:30:54Maybe somebody slugged him, and then combed his hair!
00:30:56By George!
00:30:58Now I've got it!
00:31:00Stabbed!
00:31:01Below the left shoulder blade,…
00:31:03…near the spine!
00:31:05There's no external bleeding!
00:31:07Internal hemorrhage, huh?
00:31:09That's it!
00:31:11What do you think of the suicide theory now, Sergeant?
00:31:13Well, it's slightly complicated, for him to be shot, slugged, and stabbed himself,…
00:31:18…particularly in the back!
00:31:19Yes, very complicated!
00:31:21– I'll mark him! – Yes!
00:31:24You see, there's no hole in the back of his pajama jacket!
00:31:27So, he couldn't have been wearing that when he was stabbed, to get this!
00:31:31There's a hole in the back of his coat,…
00:31:33…and another in his waistcoat!
00:31:34Bloodstained!
00:31:36He must have been fully dressed when he was attacked!
00:31:38That's me out! I finished!
00:31:40I suppose you want a quick autopsy!
00:31:41Yes!
00:31:42Get that body down to the morgue as soon as possible!
00:31:44Good day, gentlemen!
00:31:46– Good day! – Hey, now!
00:31:47Yes?
00:31:48Do you think there's any possible chance of that being suicide?
00:31:51– What? – All right, all right! Just a fair question, big boy!
00:31:54Go on home, and get your hotcakes and sausage!
00:31:56You need the strength!
00:31:58– Hennessy! – Yeah?
00:31:59– Hurry up to that dead body! – Right!
00:32:00– Any report on that wire? – Not yet, Sarge!
00:32:08Now, send a wire to this guy Markham, 98 East 71st Street, New York City,…
00:32:12…and tell him, ah,…
00:32:14…Brisbane Coal, not aboard this train.
00:32:17Wallace, conductor, train number 7.
00:32:20Sit down!
00:32:21What time did Brisbane Coal leave for Chicago?
00:32:25In time to catch the 5 o'clock train, sir!
00:32:27How do you know he caught the 5 o'clock train?
00:32:30I phoned for the reservation,…
00:32:31…brought him his walking stick and overcoat, and…
00:32:33…and put his bag in the taxi!
00:32:35Ah!
00:32:36Did you remain in the house all evening?
00:32:38Why, no, sir!
00:32:39I went out about 6.30!
00:32:40It was a servant's night off!
00:32:42Everyone was out to dinner!
00:32:43Hmm!
00:32:44Did you notice anything unusual in Mr. Brisbane Coal?
00:32:47No, sir!
00:32:49Hmm!
00:32:50Did you notice anything unusual in Mr. Brisbane's manner when he left?
00:32:53Oh, now that you mention it, he was distracted, and…
00:32:56…and very irritable!
00:32:57Hmm! You say you gave him his stick?
00:32:59Yes, sir!
00:33:00Ah, what kind of stick?
00:33:02His favorite!
00:33:03An ivory-handled one!
00:33:04He never went anywhere without it, sir!
00:33:06Are you quite sure he took that particular stick with him?
00:33:09Positive! I handed it to him myself, sir!
00:33:12Did you see him when he returned here last evening?
00:33:14– Returned? – Yes!
00:33:15I didn't know he had returned, sir!
00:33:18Then whose ivory-handed stick is that hanging over that chair in the hall?
00:33:22– I don't know, sir! – Sit down!
00:33:23– I swear I don't know! – Sit down!
00:33:24Steady, Gamble! Steady!
00:33:28Is this it?
00:33:29Is it?
00:33:30Yes, sir!
00:33:32I can't understand it!
00:33:33I suppose you saw nothing of his bag?
00:33:35Why, no, sir!
00:33:36Well, if he brought his cane back here,…
00:33:38…what did he do with his bag?
00:33:39Ah, very good, Sergeant! That's just the point!
00:33:42– He undoubtedly left it somewhere! – But where?
00:33:44I should think the most logical place would be the checkroom at the Grand Central Station!
00:33:48What kind of a bag was it?
00:33:50Just an ordinary pigskin bag, sir!
00:33:52With his initials, BC, on it!
00:33:54Is that it?
00:33:56Yeah, that looks like it!
00:34:00There's your police department receipt!
00:34:03What time was this checked?
00:34:054.45!
00:34:06Thanks, pal!
00:34:07Okay!
00:34:10Well, here it is!
00:34:12Put it here!
00:34:13Did you examine the contents?
00:34:15Nope! I brought it right up here!
00:34:16I'll open it!
00:34:17Did you find out what time this was checked?
00:34:19Yeah!
00:34:20There you are!
00:34:224.45!
00:34:24He must have gone direct from the house to the station!
00:34:26Did the attendant remember who left this?
00:34:28No, he said there were so many of them, that most of the time he didn't even notice the people!
00:34:33Well, there's…
00:34:34…shaving kit, shirts,…
00:34:36…underwear, socks,…
00:34:38…collars,…
00:34:39…slippers!
00:34:41Nothing in there that a man wouldn't ordinarily take with him on a short trip!
00:34:47Except this, perhaps!
00:34:49Unsolved murders!
00:34:51That's a swell book to take to Chicago!
00:34:53That's rather odd, isn't it?
00:34:55Yes, more than that!
00:34:56Gentlemen, the mist is beginning to rise!
00:35:00I think I know at least a part of what happened here last night!
00:35:03How about this?
00:35:05Let's say that Brisbane Coe started for Chicago on a night when he knew that no one but Archer would be at home.
00:35:11He missed his train purposely,…
00:35:13…checked his bag at the station, and returned here to kill his brother.
00:35:16To make a perfect alibi,…
00:35:18…he planned to take a later train to Chicago.
00:35:20But something stopped him!
00:35:23And something stopped Archer Coe before he could remove his shoes last night!
00:35:26You see what I mean? Those shoes of Archer's, that bag of Brisbane's,…
00:35:30…his stick hanging there in the hall? It shouldn't have been there!
00:35:34Take just a minute!
00:35:38Oh, uh,… Gamble!
00:35:40Where did Mr. Brisbane usually put his hat and overcoat when he came in?
00:35:44He always hung them in the closet, sir!
00:35:46Ah, which closet?
00:35:47This one!
00:35:54Oh!
00:36:00Mr. Brisbane!
00:36:03Well, Mr. Vance,…
00:36:05…where are we now?
00:36:08I should say, somewhere in the middle of the Gobi Desert!
00:36:15– Telephone rings! – Telephone rings!
00:36:18Hello!
00:36:20What?
00:36:21Again?
00:36:22I'm right in the middle of my lunch!
00:36:25First you interfere with my breakfast, then you ruin my lunch!
00:36:27Don't you boys ever eat?
00:36:29No!
00:36:30I'm on a diet!
00:36:31Oh, all right!
00:36:33– Telephone rings! – Telephone rings!
00:36:36Hello!
00:36:38All right, I'll attend to that later!
00:36:40Get me the wagon, and the fingerprint gang!
00:36:47– Just a minute, fellas! One side, please! – Just a moment, please!
00:36:51– Ready? – That's all!
00:36:53All right, go ahead!
00:36:58Here!
00:36:59He's been dead for hours!
00:37:01And me, thinking all the time he was playing possum!
00:37:04Well, there are too many people in the world, anyway!
00:37:07Mr. Vance,…
00:37:09…this is just ordinary junk!
00:37:11I'm afraid so!
00:37:12And I'd rather hope for something important!
00:37:14Which one of the two victims died first, Arthur?
00:37:17Archico, I think!
00:37:18– This one, a little later! – And the weapon?
00:37:20The same, sharp and narrow!
00:37:23Check it!
00:37:24– Tag and list these! – I think I'd better fingerprint everything inside and outside here!
00:37:28– Right, Captain! – Hennessey!
00:37:30Yes?
00:37:30– Look for a sharp, narrow weapon! – All right!
00:37:35Found something?
00:37:36Well, it looks like fish and tackle!
00:37:38It's tackle, all right, but not fishing!
00:37:41Markham, we're dealing with a shrewd brain!
00:37:43The technique for this crime was very cleverly worked out!
00:37:46But something went wrong!
00:37:47Sergeant!
00:37:49– Here's your order for the removal of the body! – Thanks, Doc!
00:37:51So long,…
00:37:53…I want food!
00:37:55Well, nobody's stopping you!
00:37:56And if you've got any more corpses, bring them out now, will you?
00:37:58I can't be running up and down here all day!
00:38:00What do you mean, running up and down all day?
00:38:02With that swell car the city gave you!
00:38:04Ah!
00:38:05Nothing upsets the doctor!
00:38:58I'm going to take charge!
00:39:00Well, if you hurry up and solve this case, maybe I can go home!
00:39:04Come on!
00:39:05– Thank you! – Ha, ha, ha!
00:39:07Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:09Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:11Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:13Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:15Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:17Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:19Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:21Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:23Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:25Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:27Ha, ha, ha, ha!
00:39:31I can handle everything, if I don't get too much interference!
00:39:34– Oh, Markham! – Yes?
00:39:36You're just in time for a demonstration!
00:39:38I think I can show you how Brisbane Co. used this fishing tackle!
00:39:43He started for Chicago, and Bill used it to provide an alibi!
00:39:46He had other plans in this room! Watch this!
00:39:51Notice the bent pin, which is hooked on the bolt handle?
00:39:54This is attached to the string I am now pulling through the keyhole.
00:39:58If you follow the string, you will see that it passes around a pin in the wall.
00:40:01This acts as a pulley,…
00:40:03…and is also attached to a string passing through the keyhole.
00:40:06You see, the bolt is now being forced into its socket.
00:40:09On my word!
00:40:11I now pull the first string through the keyhole, and then the second string.
00:40:15And with it, comes the pin, leaving no evidence.
00:40:18Now, let me in!
00:40:21– It worked? – Yes, it worked!
00:40:24Well, that explains that, then! Very clever!
00:40:26It could have been done that way!
00:40:28But if Brisbane killed Archer Coe,…
00:40:30…who killed Brisbane, and hung him in the closet?
00:40:33Why did he do it?
00:40:35– That's what we want to find out, isn't it? – Exactly!
00:40:38Yeah!
00:40:39Gentlemen!
00:40:41– Two persons planned the murder of Archer Coe! – Two? What?
00:40:44But their paths crossed!
00:40:46– Brisbane was one of them! – The other?
00:40:47I've got it! The Chinese cook! They're full of those tricks!
00:40:51Now, get this!
00:40:53Dr. De Rimas said that Coe was struck over the head with a blunt instrument!
00:40:57– This poker would answer that description, wouldn't it? – Yes!
00:40:59And that certainly looks like dried blood!
00:41:01It certainly does!
00:41:03But what about those short, coarse hairs?
00:41:06– They don't look like Coe's! – No!
00:41:09Well, Mr. Vance, why didn't you find that when you looked in there this morning?
00:41:14It wasn't in there this morning!
00:41:17Besides, it doesn't belong in this room! It belongs downstairs in the library!
00:41:21Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:22Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:24Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:25Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:27Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:30Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:34Is that you, Captain?
00:41:36What's the matter with you?
00:41:40What is it, Cap?
00:41:44Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:45What is it, Captain?
00:41:46Ruff! Ruff!
00:41:49Are you all right, down there?
00:41:51Oh, good boy, Captain.
00:42:05This dog's been struck a nasty blow.
00:42:08That explains the coarse hairs on the poker.
00:42:11Whose dog is this?
00:42:12I don't know.
00:42:13I mean, I've often seen it in the vacant lots.
00:42:16Just tell the truth, Gamble.
00:42:18Yes.
00:42:19Why don't you?
00:42:21It belongs to the lady next door, sir.
00:42:25Hmm.
00:42:26Uh, Hennessey.
00:42:27Get that fellow to her bets as fast as you can, will you?
00:42:29Yes, sir.
00:42:41Now, Gamble, let's have the name of the lady next door.
00:42:43Doris Dellafield.
00:42:44Yes, I'm Miss Dellafield.
00:42:47Won't you sit down, gentlemen?
00:42:48Thank you.
00:42:49I'm sorry I didn't win you a trophy at the dog show.
00:42:51You're quite a fancier, aren't you?
00:42:52Yes, somewhat.
00:42:54I'm interested in one of your dogs, the Doberman.
00:42:57You mean Figaro.
00:42:58I wonder if I could have a look at him.
00:43:00I'm terribly sorry.
00:43:01You know, he slipped his leash last night and ran away.
00:43:04I've notified the police.
00:43:05My maid's been scouring the neighborhood trying to find him.
00:43:08Well, did she inquire at Mr. Coe's house next door?
00:43:14Well, I don't know.
00:43:16You and Mr. Coe have been good friends, haven't you?
00:43:21I know him.
00:43:22Why?
00:43:24Your dog was found in his house this morning, badly wounded.
00:43:29What?
00:43:30Have you any idea how he got there?
00:43:32No.
00:43:33Do you suppose he would follow someone into the house?
00:43:36Why, I hardly think...
00:43:42So, what are you driving at?
00:43:45Mr. Archer Coe and his brother were murdered last night.
00:43:49Murdered?
00:43:51I was afraid that...
00:43:54Just a moment.
00:43:56Hello.
00:43:57Is that Miss Doris Delafield's apartment?
00:44:00Would you please tell Miss Delafield that we couldn't get the reservations for her and Mr. Grassi on A deck?
00:44:06And ask her if B deck would be satisfactory.
00:44:08Miss Delafield will not be sailing.
00:44:11You can cancel the reservation for them both.
00:44:14Both?
00:44:16Do you mind telling me whom the other reservation was for?
00:44:20I refuse to answer that question.
00:44:23Would it be Mr. Grassi?
00:44:25But I am Mr. Grassi.
00:44:27And if I didn't cancel those reservations, who did?
00:44:30What?
00:44:31Miss Delafield.
00:44:32Oh, no, no, no, she didn't.
00:44:33No, really, there's been a mistake.
00:44:35As soon as I can find out about this, I'll call you back.
00:44:39I don't think you'll find Miss Delafield at home just now.
00:44:42And as for the cancellation of your steamship reservations, we regret very much that it was necessary.
00:44:47Who are you?
00:44:49This is Mr. Markham, the district attorney.
00:44:52I'm honored, but I'm afraid I don't quite understand.
00:44:55It's about this.
00:44:57As a matter of fact, Mr. Coe didn't commit suicide, he was murdered.
00:45:01Murdered?
00:45:02Would you mind coming along with us?
00:45:05Murdered?
00:45:06Would you mind coming along with us?
00:45:08Just a little matter of comparing fingerprints.
00:45:13No, not in the least.
00:45:35All right, I think that's all.
00:45:58Found anything yet?
00:46:00The one taken from the doorknob is too blurred for identification.
00:46:03But this one is very clear.
00:46:04It appears to be that of Liang, the Chinese cook.
00:46:35Any luck?
00:46:37No, not yet.
00:46:38It must be here somewhere.
00:46:40I'm positive that the dagger that killed the Coes belongs in that sheath.
00:46:45Tied by...
00:46:46No, no.
00:47:00Well.
00:47:05That's strange.
00:47:06What is?
00:47:07The Qing-Ya vase is missing.
00:47:09It's the most valuable in the whole collection.
00:47:11That's all that's left of it.
00:47:14If I'm not mistaken, that's blood.
00:47:16Blood.
00:47:19Markham, I'm coming more and more to the belief that Archer Coe was killed in this room.
00:47:23That poker, this dagger sheath, now these fragments, all here.
00:47:26But Vance, do you mean to tell me that the dead man walked upstairs?
00:47:30I'm not trying to tell you anything but the facts.
00:47:33It's the most remarkable case in my experience.
00:47:41Find anything, Cap?
00:47:43Yes, sir.
00:47:44Plenty.
00:47:52Oh, Mr. Reed.
00:47:53Oh, yes, Mr. Vance.
00:47:54Would you step in for a moment, please?
00:47:56Why, certainly.
00:48:00Smoke?
00:48:01No, thanks.
00:48:02Did you notice that the Qing-Ya was missing?
00:48:06Missing?
00:48:11Why, it was here yesterday evening.
00:48:13At what time?
00:48:14At about 6.30 or 7 o'clock.
00:48:17I came back to talk to Mr. Coe.
00:48:19About what?
00:48:21Well, as a matter of fact, I...
00:48:23I wanted to quit my job as his secretary.
00:48:25Oh, you'd been having some difficulties with him?
00:48:28It was rather a personal matter.
00:48:31It was rather a personal matter.
00:48:33I wanted his permission to marry Miss Lake.
00:48:35What did he say to that?
00:48:38He ordered me out.
00:48:40You went?
00:48:41Yes.
00:48:42Where?
00:48:43I went to find Miss Lake.
00:48:44I thought she was at the Kennel Club.
00:48:46But I had a puncture on the way, so it was rather late when I got there.
00:48:49She'd already left with Sir Thomas McDonald.
00:48:52Then I came home and went directly to bed.
00:48:54Did you hear anything or see anything when you came into the house?
00:48:57No.
00:48:58But after I'd been in bed for a while, I heard some noises downstairs.
00:49:02I opened the door and looked down.
00:49:04But it was only Liang, the Chinese cook, coming in.
00:49:07Was he customarily noisy in entering the house?
00:49:11Oh, as a matter of fact, it's the first time I ever heard him come in.
00:49:15Indeed.
00:49:17Well, I think that's all, Mr. Reed. Thank you.
00:49:19Thank you.
00:49:20If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.
00:49:22Good night.
00:49:24I think I'd check up on that Kennel Club alibi.
00:49:27I will.
00:49:28You might have those fragments checked for fingerprints, if you will.
00:49:31Yes.
00:49:32Meanwhile, I'll do a little exploring in the kitchen.
00:49:35While I'm Mr. Vance, I thought, get Markham.
00:49:38Here.
00:49:43Mr. Liang, I believe?
00:49:45You're the cook.
00:49:47Me cook.
00:49:49I'll take care of it.
00:49:52I won't give you any trouble.
00:49:54I'll take care of it.
00:49:56I'll take care of it.
00:49:58I'll take care of it.
00:50:00I'll take care of it.
00:50:02I'll take care of it.
00:50:04a cook. You can drop the pitch in English. That isn't necessary with me. Where did you
00:50:10go to school? Columbia University. Ah, that's considerable education for a cook, isn't it?
00:50:16Mr. Koh employed me because I know a great deal about Chinese porcelain. Ah, I see. Ah,
00:50:21that's a very lovely piece of ting-yao, isn't it? How did it get broken? I don't know, sir.
00:50:27I found the pieces in the wastebasket in the library. You want me, Vance? Oh, yes. See
00:50:34that, Markham? More blood spots on the inside. Apparently, the murderer dropped the dagger
00:50:39in here to hide it, but he dropped it too hard and the vase broke. When did you find
00:50:44these pieces? This morning. This morning? You're sure it wasn't last night, about eight
00:50:50o'clock, let us say? No, sir. I did not get in until after midnight. I'm sure Mr. Reed
00:50:56or Mr. Gamble will tell you that. What time did you find the poker? The poker? Yes, the
00:51:02poker. The one you hid in the Chinese chest in Mr. Archer's room this afternoon. But I
00:51:08don't know what you mean. Oh, yes, you do. I was behind the door in that room when you
00:51:12hid it. Let me handle this, Mr. Vance. Are you gonna talk or do I have to make you? Wait.
00:51:18I'll tell you the truth. Well, spit it out. When I returned to my room here about eight
00:51:24o'clock last night. Ah, I thought so. I heard angry muffled voices in the library. Then
00:51:30a dull sound as of someone falling. I stood at my door here and listened. Then I heard
00:51:37footsteps cross the kitchen and go out the back door. And then? I walked up the corridor
00:51:43and everything was very quiet. I opened the library door and looked in. The furniture
00:51:49was overturned. The poker was there. The desk was disarranged and the valuable Tengyu vase
00:51:56was broken. I thought there must be something wrong. So I went upstairs and looked into
00:52:01Mr. Koh's bedroom. He was dead. Fearing that I might be suspected, I went back to the library
00:52:08and picked up the broken pieces of the vase. And together with the poker, I took them to
00:52:13my room. And knowing that you were alone in the house, you were afraid you might be suspected.
00:52:18So you hid the weapons and left. Yes, sir. You returned to the house about midnight and
00:52:24purposely made a lot of noise so as to establish your alibi, is that right? Yes, sir. All right,
00:52:29then. Where'd you put the dagger? I did not find the dagger. Don't give me that. What did you do
00:52:34with it after you stuck it in Archer Koh's back? I've got it, Mr. Markham. Yes? What? Fingerprint
00:52:38on this broken fragment belongs to the Italian, Eduardo Grassi. Well, Mr. Vance, looks like
00:52:48somebody else miscalculated. Yep, it fits. That doesn't prove anything. What about this?
00:52:58Where did you get it? It was in Archer Koh's pocket. What were you doing outside the drawing
00:53:09room window last night? I wanted to be sure that he was alone. Why? For weeks we had been
00:53:15negotiating for the sale of his collection to the museum at Milan. It meant everything to me. He
00:53:20kept raising the price, but on Monday we came to an understanding. And I came to the museum that I
00:53:25had succeeded. And last night he turned me down because he saw me with Miss Dullifield. Let me
00:53:33explain. Archer was extremely jealous of me. Well, you can't blame him for that. You went there to
00:53:39threaten him, didn't you? Joe had every right to do. I told him I would use any means to make him
00:53:44fulfill his contract. He laughed at me, said that he would smash every piece in his collection before
00:53:49he'd let me have it. So you picked up the poker and did a little smashing on your own account, eh? I
00:53:54did not. Let me have the fragment, will you? Thank you. You know how that was broken? With
00:54:02bloodstains on the inside and your fingerprint on the outside? I don't know. Sergeant, I think you
00:54:08better book him. Right. Thank you. Come on. Let's get out of that monkey suit. Let's get going.
00:54:16Come on. Don't worry. I'm not running away. You telling me? I suspected the Italian all along.
00:54:27Exactly. But why should Grassi also stab Brisbane? And what about the Doberman? You see, Markham,
00:54:35we have nearly all the pieces of the puzzle, but none of them seems to fit. Here we are. This
00:54:41isn't it. This is the basement. I know. Come on. I just want to see where this goes.
00:55:06Oh, good evening, sir. Gamble. By the way, how long have you been using that name? All my life,
00:55:20sir. DuBois checked Gamble's fingerprints at the identification bureau, and who do you think he
00:55:26turns out to be? Not Gamble? No. Atlantic Eddy. He used to work the boats on both sides of the
00:55:32ocean. Honestly, Mr. Vance, I haven't turned a trick in five years. Oh, that's all right,
00:55:36Eddie. I just wanted to let you know that we're old pals. Sir, someone slipped in the back door
00:55:41and went into one of the front rooms. Well, Miss Stutterfield. Don't be surprised, gentlemen. I'm
00:55:56used to coming in here like this. You seem to know your way around here pretty well. As a district
00:56:01attorney, you're responsible for this case, aren't you? That's right. Well, I'm tired of detectives.
00:56:06I'm tired of being spied on. All you want to know is who killed Archer Coe, isn't it? Naturally.
00:56:11Well, I did. What? Yes, and there isn't a jury on earth will convict me when they hear my story.
00:56:18You don't believe me, do you? You were wondering this afternoon how my dog, Figaro, could get into
00:56:25this house. Well, he was following me. He was defending me when he was struck. Where did you
00:56:32kill Mr. Coe? In his bedroom. What kind of lipstick do you use? Lipstick? What's that got to do with
00:56:39it? Is that yours? Yes, that's mine. While I was struggling with Archer, my bag dropped on the
00:56:48floor and everything spilled out. Won't do, Miss Delafield. It's an old trick. It's not a trick. I
00:56:56didn't realize that you were so fond of Mr. Grosse. Mr. Grosse has nothing to do with it.
00:57:00Take me down to the station. I'll say nothing more until I get an attorney.
00:57:18This guy's been stabbed, Hennessey.
00:57:48Is this it, Mr. Vance? Yes, that's it. Thank you very much. First you spoil my breakfast, then you break up my
00:58:00lunch. Now you pull me out of bed in the middle of the night, and this fellow not even dead. Why don't
00:58:06you put that in your report, Doc? Those fingerprints would never pick up on that silk handle, but it fits
00:58:12perfectly. Where'd you find it, Sergeant? Under the bed. Congratulations. That's all right, Mr. Vance. Three
00:58:21crimes with the same weapon, Markham. Tom, what is it? What's happened? I don't know, dear. Somebody stabbed me. Is it
00:58:34serious, Doctor? Oh, no. I gave him three grains of sodium amytal to quiet his nerves. He'll be all right. I'd
00:58:39like to rent a room here till they finish this case. Poor darling. I wish I hadn't got you mixed up in all this. You
00:58:50shouldn't have come here. Let me see this through a little. I won't leave you. Can't we get away from here? We leave
00:58:57tomorrow, together. Well, what do you think about it, Doc? Well, the thrust punctured the median bacillic vein and
00:59:03caused a hemorrhage. Could the wound have been self-inflicted, Doctor? I'm the city butcher, not the detective. Don't
00:59:12bother me with any murders after three tomorrow. I'm going to the World Series. Hey, Doc. Hold me the score between
00:59:18your knees, will you? Get these people out of this. What are they waiting for? We just want to ask you a few
00:59:24questions, Sir Thomas. You say that when you were stabbed, you saw nothing, huh? That's right. It was dark. I heard a
00:59:32noise and jumped out of bed. Somebody threw a chair and just missed my head and struck the window. I shouted for
00:59:39help and ran towards the door. Then I felt a sharp pain in my arm as I lost consciousness. Knife by a ghost. That's a
00:59:48hot one. I think he'd done it himself. How dare you, Sir? That's not fair. Do you know anything about that? Where'd you
00:59:56find it? Under your bed. I never saw it before. Yeah. Like I never saw a pair of handcuffs. You have no right to question him
01:00:06now in this condition. Rather funny. You see what I see in Archer Cole's room? I have a suspicion that whoever killed
01:00:26the Coles came from this house. Probably from this room. Gentlemen, I think I can fit the pieces of this jigsaw puzzle
01:00:38together. Here is East 71st Street. This is the Cole house, the yard, and the apartment house next door. Now let's have a look
01:00:49inside. This is a McDonald's apartment. Directly opposite is the window of Archer Cole's bedroom. Underneath McDonald's
01:00:59apartment is the cozy little nest of Miss Dellafield and her temporary guest, Mr. Grassi. This is the elevator and here are the
01:01:08stairs that lead directly to the back entrance. From there, it's easy to reach the back entrance of the Cole house across the
01:01:14yard. Now, that's the front hall and here's the library. On Wednesday evening between 7.30 and 8 o'clock, Archer Cole was sitting
01:01:26alone in that room. Now remember, it was the servant's night off. The killer must have known this when he came in the back door. He
01:01:37was so intent upon what he was planning to do that he must have left the back door open because from somewhere in that vacant lot
01:01:46came a dog, a Doberman Pinscher, belonging to Doris Dellafield. He saw the back door standing open and went in. Meanwhile, the
01:01:58killer was moving along the hall toward the library, making absolutely sure that Archer Cole was alone. He knew exactly where he
01:02:07was going and exactly what he was going to do. He came so silently that it must have startled Archer Cole when he looked up and saw
01:02:16him carefully closing the door. It is my conjecture, gentlemen, that a terrible target was in place. Archer Cole must have struck him and
01:02:26as he fell back, he picked up the poker as the first weapon that came into his hand. He struck Archer Cole on the head. Cole collapsed
01:02:34across the desk, his hands groping in the drawer of the desk for his gun. Then in a blind rage of the moment, the killer saw a Chinese
01:02:44dagger. He seized it and stabbed Archer Cole in the back. Cole probably fell to the floor. Meantime, our Doberman Pinscher was coming
01:02:56closer and closer, probably attracted by the sound of the struggle in the library. As the killer opened the door to escape, he saw the
01:03:04Doberman Pinscher in the hall coming toward him. He again picked up the poker as the dog entered the room. True to the instinct of his brain, the
01:03:12dog sensed an enemy. He leaped, the killer struck, and the dog fell, badly wounded. Now he tried to hide the dagger in the ting-yar vase. He
01:03:23dropped it too hard and the porcelain broke into bits. He picked up the dagger again and went out the same way he came in. Meanwhile, Cole slowly
01:03:35regained consciousness and pulled himself to his feet. You remember, gentlemen, that Dr. Doremus said Cole died of an internal hemorrhage. That is the
01:03:45key to the whole situation. Archer Cole, already a dying man, walked upstairs. And what is even more terrible, he did not know that he had been
01:03:55stabbed. He went to his room and, feeling a little faint, probably, he removed his coat and vest and hung them in the closet where we found them. He put
01:04:06on his pajama top and went to the window and raised the shade. Can you imagine the killer's emotions when, from someplace in the apartment house across
01:04:17the vacant lot, he looked over and saw the man he thought he had killed standing there at the window? He knew then that he had to go back and complete his
01:04:28job to save himself. Feeling very faint by now, Archer Cole went from the window to the chair beside his desk where he sat down. There he started to
01:04:41remove his shoes. You remember just how we found him. In the very act of removing them, before he could get one of them entirely off, he died. I don't
01:04:54think he ever knew what killed him. Now we come to the most awful part of the tragedy. Brisbane Cole came back to the house with a cleverly worked-out
01:05:05plan for killing his brother. He also knew that it was the servants' night out and that he would not be disturbed. He went down the hall to the library, and
01:05:16from the drawer of the desk he took Archer Cole's own revolver and put it into his pocket. Then, turning out the light on the desk, he went out of the room.
01:05:26He hung his stick over the chair in the hall and tiptoed up the stairs and into Archer Cole's room. He saw his brother sitting in his easy chair,
01:05:37apparently asleep. I can see him tiptoe across the room. And from somewhere just across the desk, he took out the revolver, and with careful aim, he pulled the trigger.
01:05:54Meantime, the killer, believing that he had only wounded Archer Cole, came back by the same route to finish his job. Then Brisbane closed the window and lowered the shade.
01:06:08And returning to the body, he carefully placed the gun in Archer's hand, as though it had been suicide. Then he went to the door, and with the two pieces of string, the pins, and the darning needle,
01:06:24he was able to bolt the door on the inside, just as I showed you. A very clever device, gentlemen, which he had discovered in the book of unsolved murders, which we found in his suitcase.
01:06:39Then, gentlemen, Brisbane went on down the stairs, little knowing what awaited him there. The killer mistook Brisbane for Archer Cole and drove the dagger into Brisbane's back.
01:06:53Then to hide the body, he dragged it into the closet. I doubt if he even discovered his mistake until the next day.
01:07:03That's great. But who did all that?
01:07:06Well, you can search me. I'm going straight.
01:07:10You can include me in that, Sergeant.
01:07:12Haven't you got any ideas at all, Vance?
01:07:14Markham? It's a maze of conflicting clues. Any one of seven people might have done it.
01:07:19But we couldn't convict seven people, Mr. Vance.
01:07:22You couldn't convict one with the evidence you've got. Gentlemen, I'm afraid we're completely stopped.
01:07:28Licks.
01:07:31I hate to admit it, but it looks that way.
01:07:34Vance, in all the years we've worked together, I've never heard you say that before.
01:07:38I know. I'm sorry, Markham.
01:07:41Well, what are we going to do about it?
01:07:43I don't know. Are you sure you checked up on all the alibis?
01:07:46Every one of them.
01:07:47And you've gone over the fingerprint situation with your boy?
01:07:50Yes, sir.
01:07:51Well, we've slipped up somewhere, Sergeant. But there must be something that we can get our teeth into.
01:07:57Markham, I suggest that you dismiss this case.
01:08:00What? Dismiss it?
01:08:02Yes. Turn all the suspects loose.
01:08:04I can just see all the newspapers in this town screaming for a new district attorney.
01:08:09Well, we can probably cover you up, all right, Mr. Markham. I've said it was suicide all along.
01:08:13Yes, I know. We could put that solution on it, but I hate to do it.
01:08:17All right, Sergeant. Go ahead. Turn them loose.
01:08:19Turn them loose?
01:08:20Yes.
01:08:21Well, Mr. Vance, this is once we're both dead.
01:08:24Well, Mr. Vance, this is once we're both stuck.
01:08:31When you give up, Vance, I'm sunk.
01:08:34Oh, I haven't given up. I have another idea.
01:08:37What?
01:08:38If it works, I'll have your killer for you in half an hour.
01:08:41I'm going to arrange a little meeting with him now.
01:08:43What? But you let me dismiss all the suspects.
01:08:46That's just what I wanted you to do.
01:08:54Hello? This is Mr. Vance.
01:08:58I hope I haven't disturbed you.
01:09:01I wonder if you'd do me a little favor.
01:09:04Mr. Markham?
01:09:05Yes.
01:09:06Can I see you a minute?
01:09:08That suicide story might work all right for Archer Co.
01:09:11But I forgot all about Brisbane.
01:09:14Well, never mind about that now.
01:09:16Just release the suspects, as I told you.
01:09:18All right.
01:09:21Yes?
01:09:22That's right.
01:09:24At 4.30.
01:09:25And just get him into an argument.
01:09:28Oh, I'll have him with me. I'm depending on his instinct.
01:09:32That's right. Thanks.
01:09:35If we can catch him off his guard, I think he'll give himself away.
01:09:39Come on, Markham, we've got to get there before 4.25.
01:09:43Mr. Vance, they're in the library now.
01:09:48Oh, darling, let me help you.
01:09:50All right, Kathy.
01:10:12Well, it's the first time we've used bloodhounds in police work.
01:10:15Well, it's the first time we've used bloodhounds in police work
01:10:17since I wore high-button shoes.
01:10:19And red flannel underwear?
01:10:20Oh, I always wear red flannel underwear.
01:10:22So do I.
01:10:24I want your bridal suite on the...
01:10:26on the Coronia.
01:10:28The sailing at midnight.
01:10:29That's right.
01:10:30Thank you.
01:10:31Sailing at midnight?
01:10:33Lady MacDonald.
01:10:35Is it the title that dazzles you so much?
01:10:38Or is it the fortune she'll inherit that makes her so attractive, Sir Thomas?
01:10:41Raymond, are you crazy?
01:10:43It isn't the first time a fortune has bought a title.
01:10:45If so happens, I'm not in need of a fortune.
01:10:47Possibly you are.
01:10:48Raymond, you've no right to interfere this way.
01:10:49No right? Well, I'll take that right.
01:10:51You think you're both sailing at midnight?
01:10:53Well, it won't work.
01:10:54You're going all right, Sir Thomas, but you're going alone.
01:10:56Really?
01:10:57Yes, and you're going now, or else...
01:10:59Raymond!
01:11:05Ah, the poker again, huh?
01:11:11Take him off!
01:11:13Take him off!
01:11:15No!
01:11:21Take him off!
01:11:23Take him off!
01:11:25Take him off!
01:11:28Take him off!
01:11:30Take him off!
01:11:32Take him off, will you?
01:11:34Will you take him off?
01:11:36Help!
01:11:40Here, hold him.
01:11:42Why did you kill Archico?
01:11:44Why did you kill him?
01:11:45I didn't mean to kill him.
01:11:46But you did, eh?
01:11:47I tell you, I didn't mean to kill him.
01:11:48He struck me when I told him I wanted to marry Hilda.
01:11:50And I lost my head.
01:11:52I hit him with a poker.
01:11:54I don't remember anything after that.
01:11:57It was a terrible mistake.
01:11:59And MacDonald?
01:12:01I still would kill him if I could.
01:12:05There's your man, Sergeant.
01:12:07You made a fatal mistake, Reed, when you reached for that poker.
01:12:09Somebody swiped my bracelets.
01:12:11You dropped them in the pantry.
01:12:13Oh.
01:12:14All right, Hennessy.
01:12:15Deep down, book him.
01:12:17I want to thank you very much for your cooperation.
01:12:19Not at all.
01:12:21It was Sir Thomas I telephoned from your office, Markham.
01:12:23He very cleverly helped to stage this little scene.
01:12:27We have to thank the dog for the rest.
01:12:29Well, we did it again, Mr. Vance.
01:12:31Congratulations, Sergeant.
01:12:33Thank you.
01:12:35I'll certainly mention you in my story to the papers.
01:12:37Thank you.
01:12:39Oh, that's all right, Mr. Vance.
