Two neighbors are the best of friends, but the relationship sours when one accuses the other of stealing from him; tensions rise after constant surveillance, accusations of snitching and a literal backstabbing, ending in a deadly on camera shooting.

00:00A neighbor you can call your best friend is a dream come true.
00:10I'm Raul.
00:11These are my parents.
00:12Alex and Raul became friends right away.
00:15Every guy needs a man cave.
00:16I gotta set up something like this at my place.
00:18They spent a lot of time together.
00:21Everybody got along fine in the beginning.
00:23But when bonds are broken.
00:25That's when it all went bad.
00:26Move your car, goon.
00:27You want it?
00:29The backstabbing begins.
00:31So it just became a very intense, hostile.
00:35What's your problem?
00:37Environment.
00:38You are street trash.
00:40Hey.
00:41Come on.
00:42Let's go.
00:43You want it?
00:44Where's he at?
00:45But what can you do?
00:46You're living next to each other.
00:52I know what you did.
00:54Get out of my neighborhood.
00:55Stay away from my wife.
00:56On the ground now.
00:58No!
01:06Paris, an old railway town in the California desert, is seeing a great revival.
01:12It's just an older area that's linked to the railroad track back in the days.
01:17And many places that are growing with the new residential neighborhoods.
01:23People are just beginning to settle into this newly completed subdivision.
01:29Hey, next time you're going to lift something heavy, let me know.
01:37The Carbajal family is one of the first to claim their home on this street.
01:42When my parents first moved out there, there was really nothing there.
01:46Maria and Francisco Carbajal came to Paris to escape the stress of big city living.
01:53Very nice people.
01:54You know, very giving.
01:55Love to have people over.
01:57Love to host.
01:58Yo, why didn't you guys give him a hand?
02:01They wouldn't let us help.
02:02You know how they are.
02:07Their daughters, Patricia and Leticia, visit often.
02:10But their adult son, Raul, lives with them.
02:13And works as a butcher in town.
02:15Raul was a really good person.
02:18Everybody loved him.
02:19He was always laughing and trying to make people laugh.
02:22Don't you have to get to work?
02:23No, let me get the rest of the stuff out for you guys first.
02:26He had a smile that was from ear to ear.
02:29Definitely very charismatic.
02:31You know, full of energy and just love.
02:35Raul looked intimidating, but once you started talking to him, he came out.
02:39He would be one of the coolest people ever.
02:43Raul was helpful.
02:44He was always helpful in any way that he could.
02:48And Raul is about to meet another good Samaritan.
02:52When the Aguayo family moves in next door,
02:58Alex Aguayo lives with his parents and younger brother.
03:02He is a full-time caregiver for all three.
03:05His brother has Down syndrome.
03:08Alex's parents were older.
03:11Alex stepped up, took care of his brother,
03:13and then eventually took care of his parents as well.
03:16They was pretty good people.
03:18They was pretty good people.
03:19He was an awesome person to be taking on a role that was meant for his parents.
03:25I thought Alex was amazing.
03:28He's such a good, caring person.
03:31He appeared to be a quiet person.
03:33Somebody might refer to him as maybe a gentle giant.
03:38Let me get that.
03:45There we go.
03:46Wow.
03:48Thank you.
03:49No problem.
03:50I'm Raul.
03:51These are my parents.
03:52My sisters.
03:53I'm Alex.
03:54Those are my parents.
03:56And that handsome little devil is my younger brother.
03:58Nice to meet you.
03:59He's a little shy.
04:00That's okay.
04:01Well, hey, if you need anything else, let me know.
04:03It was, as far as I knew, peaceful.
04:06Everybody got along fine in the beginning.
04:09It looks like the two neighbors will be best of friends.
04:13But first impressions can be deceiving.
04:19These are almost ready.
04:21Awesome.
04:22My mom is a great cook.
04:24She cooks so good.
04:26Alex's mom had health issues.
04:28So sometimes my mom would cook and give it to Alex's family.
04:32Tell them if they need anything, just to knock.
04:34Cool.
04:37Hey, Alex.
04:38Mom made these for you guys.
04:40Oh, that's so nice of them.
04:42You know, that's what neighbors do.
04:44That's what neighbors are supposed to do.
04:46That's what neighbors are supposed to do.
04:47Beef's fresh.
04:48Got it from work.
04:49Wow.
04:50What are you doing later today?
04:51I don't really got anything going on.
04:53You should come over.
04:54Yeah, after dinner.
04:55Come.
04:56Yeah, that'd be great.
04:57Thanks.
04:58I'll see you soon, man.
04:59Tell your friends thank you.
05:00Of course.
05:01You're welcome.
05:02Alex and Roel became friends right away.
05:03I think, you know, they were about the same age.
05:05They spent a lot of time together.
05:08Welcome, brother.
05:09Wow.
05:13I got to set up something like this at my place.
05:15Roel would be in our little garage, his little setup, his little man cave.
05:19Every guy needs a man cave.
05:21Can never bring the ladies back in, you know?
05:24There's no need to be a man cave.
05:26Ha.
05:29You know what?
05:30You know what?
05:31You know what?
05:32You know what?
05:33You know what?
05:34You know what?
05:35Ha.
05:40So, are you dating anyone?
05:42I'm dating everybody.
05:44Roel was, you could say, like, was attractive to girls.
05:47You know what I mean?
05:49Nice.
05:51Lucky you.
05:52I don't remember Alex having a lot of friends.
05:55I don't think he had too much time or opportunity to get out.
05:58He didn't really have a big circle because he didn't allow too many people around him
06:02because of his family and his obligations.
06:04Oh, come on, man.
06:05I'll hook you up with someone.
06:06We'll do a double date.
06:07Really?
06:08Yeah.
06:09Ha, bro.
06:10I would really appreciate that.
06:11It would be nice to get out of the house.
06:13On the weekends, sometimes when we would hang out, other neighbors would come by
06:17and sometimes other acquaintances would stop by and be hanging out.
06:21Hey, Alex.
06:22This is Cassandra.
06:24And this is Jenny.
06:27I do think Alex was a little socially awkward.
06:32Hi.
06:33Alex never dated or anything like that.
06:35He was kind of timid before meeting a girl.
06:38Want a snack?
06:40You can bring girls to him, but, I mean, you got to do your part.
06:44We can't make the girl like you or whatever.
06:46Hey.
06:47Yeah.
06:48You remember Monica, right?
06:50Hey, Monica.
06:51Where you been?
06:53Hey, Monica.
06:54Where you been?
06:55But Raul was always the one getting the girls.
06:57Never too far away, Raul.
06:59You're just not looking hard enough.
07:01He was quite the character.
07:03He had the ability to get you to like him.
07:06He definitely loved and loved hard.
07:10What are you doing this weekend?
07:11I think Alex kind of wanted to, like, be like him, but there was nothing that money can buy.
07:18There are at least none of those traits.
07:21The two neighbors spend more time together.
07:23Alex follows his new friend's example.
07:26Ta-da!
07:27And maybe even outdoes him.
07:29Ah, you got a lot of sick stuff here.
07:32Alex's setup was better than Raul's.
07:34He turned his garage into like a little game room, play room, I guess.
07:39Is that a new laptop?
07:41Yeah, it was on sale.
07:43Alex was very humble.
07:44He didn't show off what he had.
07:46As far as garage setup, it wasn't nothing extravagant.
07:50Alex, he just took better care of what he had.
07:54Ooh, watch this.
08:00Hey, hey, hey, hey.
08:02You got presents for her?
08:04A lifelong friendship between these two is forming.
08:08I gotta go.
08:10But that train is soon derailed.
08:12You're not gonna hang?
08:13I got plans.
08:15But I'll catch you later, though, yeah?
08:22Raul has a new girlfriend.
08:24Hey, babe.
08:25Did I keep you waiting?
08:26Don't make a habit out of it.
08:27Which means less time to spend with his neighbor.
08:34I feel like he kind of was envious of Raul.
08:40It started pushing them apart.
08:43The friend's estrangement quickly manifests as conflict.
08:50Raul would have music playing loud.
08:52Hey, Raul.
08:54Could you keep it down?
08:56And it would just bother the whole neighborhood.
09:00Not just Alex and his family.
09:02Hey!
09:04What?
09:05The music.
09:06Turn it down.
09:08Raul, it's like 7 o'clock.
09:11Come on, man.
09:12You know my dad's sleeping.
09:13Please.
09:15Yeah, sure.
09:16Whatever.
09:28And there was just more problems that started escalating.
09:33Things take a terrible turn
09:35when something goes missing from Alex's man cave.
09:38Alex, what's wrong?
09:39Ma, have you seen my laptop?
09:41It was in here.
09:42I know it was in here.
09:44Someone stole it.
09:45They was disturbed that something was missing in his garage.
09:50Next thing I know,
09:51he's raving all about, you know,
09:53how somebody stole his stuff.
09:56Alex thought once the laptop was stolen
09:59that Raul was the one who did it.
10:02Alex decides to confront his neighbor.
10:06Hey, Raul!
10:08Raul!
10:09What?
10:10I got your mom's stuff.
10:12Thanks.
10:15Hey.
10:17How do you afford all this, like, nice stuff?
10:20Just gotta know where to look and who to talk to.
10:28Did you get a new laptop?
10:31Why?
10:35I haven't seen mine.
10:37So...
10:39I have a laptop.
10:40Why would I grab yours?
10:42Wait, are you saying I took your laptop?
10:45I didn't.
10:47You did.
10:48I didn't take your laptop.
10:54Fine.
10:57Screw this.
10:58Wait, hey!
11:00Whatever.
11:02Listen, man.
11:03I know you took it.
11:05You walk around like some gangster who owns the hood.
11:08That doesn't give you the right to take what you want.
11:11What the hell are you talking about?
11:13Oh, look at me.
11:14I'm Mr. Tough Guy.
11:16Are you a thief?
11:18Or do you act like one to impress the chicks?
11:21I can get what I want.
11:23They're arguing.
11:25I can get what I want.
11:27They're arguing.
11:29Back and forth. It's getting heated.
11:31I don't need to steal from you, you punk!
11:33I guess that little heated argument did get into a kind of like a little fist fight.
11:40Get out of here, man!
11:49They got into a nice little tussle.
11:56Raul, he jumped on Alex and he had him in a chokehold and everything.
12:02Alex didn't know what was going on because of the adrenaline.
12:04Raul started getting the better of him.
12:17Alex, he had a kick in his hand.
12:20So Alex stabbed Raul in the back.
12:23So Alex stabbed Raul in the back with a key.
12:25What the hell, man?
12:29Once Alex stabbed him, he kind of had like a what-did-I-just-do reaction.
12:33Raul saw blood coming from his back.
12:36He knew that he was hurt.
12:38Call 911!
12:39What happened?
12:40He stabbed me! Call 911!
12:41Okay, okay!
12:45Raul's mother calls for an ambulance.
12:47And police show up as well.
12:50Obviously, if somebody gets stabbed, the cops are going to go.
12:54So that doesn't mean you're a snitch.
12:55The cops got there because you had to call the ambulance and there was a crime committed.
13:00Photos reveal the gruesome extent of Raul's wounds.
13:05Those wounds were pretty deep.
13:07What the hell did he do that for?
13:10Alex is taken into custody.
13:13Officer, please, wait.
13:15What were we supposed to do?
13:17Mi familia. We need him.
13:22Would you like to press charges?
13:25Nah, no way.
13:26Raul did not desire prosecution on that incident.
13:30Even though it was a physical altercation.
13:32Are you sure?
13:35Don't take him away, please.
13:37Yeah, I'm sure.
13:38He told the officers, you know, you can do what you want,
13:42but we don't snitch, we don't rat.
13:45We're not doing anything like that.
13:47Despite Raul's compassion in not pressing charges against Alex,
13:53this is where their feud really begins.
13:58You snitched on me, man.
14:01You're a snitch because the cops came.
14:03You're a little bitch because you called 911.
14:06What?
14:07I think that really got up on me for a skin.
14:09You're a snitch.
14:11Don't you ever, ever call me that again.
14:15You can't really call nobody a snitch.
14:17Those are strong words. Those are really strong words.
14:19And Alex knows that those are strong words.
14:21You got that? Huh?
14:23Don't you ever call me that again.
14:26Get back inside, fat boy.
14:34Alex spit at Raul.
14:36And Raul spit back at him.
14:40Go find something to do with yourself, loser.
14:44Raul finally had enough and just yelled at him to go back to his house,
14:47to leave him alone, to stop bothering them.
14:49And then Raul's like, fuck you, go get a girlfriend.
14:53Any hope of salvaging the friendship is gone.
14:57These two hotheads are preparing for war.
15:00Oh yeah, friendship was real good.
15:03Oh man.
15:04Alex didn't even want him talking to him anymore.
15:07Alex is becoming increasingly wary of Raul.
15:11He just let it be known to Raul that I know you took things from me.
15:15I know it was you that stole this.
15:17To let Raul know that he's watching him.
15:20And Raul doesn't trust Alex either.
15:23You can't live in your home knowing that somebody already came into your garage and just stabbed you.
15:28But they still have to live side by side.
15:31We think, you know, it was a challenge for both of them to reside next to each other, for sure.
15:36You can't force Raul's family to move, right?
15:39And Raul's family can't force Alex's family to move.
15:47Alex wanted to go about his normal daily life, take care of his parents and brother.
15:53I'll get it.
15:58Their boys may not get along, but the parents make an effort to stay neighborly.
16:04I need some churros.
16:06Thank you.
16:07My mom would still send them food, give them leftovers.
16:11Who is it?
16:13I better go.
16:16My parents are good people and I don't think they should take it out on his family or his parents.
16:21Raul and Alex had already had their issues.
16:23It's not the family's fault.
16:25But the sons just can't let it go.
16:28In fact, Alex's mom is the only one who can help.
16:32In fact, Alex fears retaliation from Raul.
16:36I feel Alex started thinking that Raul was plotting to maybe do something to him or, I mean, I don't know.
16:42Or he was just paranoid, pretty much paranoia.
16:47Raul feels like he can't escape Alex's watchful eye.
16:55Raul would say he felt like he was constantly being watched.
17:03He said, I don't know how he knows, but every time I'm here or outside, there he is.
17:09Do you have a problem, man? Huh?
17:11Those were his words. It's like this motherfucker is stalking me.
17:15Do you need something?
17:17I think that was more so of Raul's paranoia thinking that Alex was watching his every move.
17:22What do you want from me, man? Huh?
17:24Alex did keep an eye on things, but he did not stalk Raul.
17:28Even Raul's girlfriend, Monica, feels like she's caught in the middle.
17:33So?
17:35Are you going to come inside?
17:36With your parents, Raul?
17:38I can't control myself.
17:40Oh, you better.
17:44What the hell?
17:45What?
17:47Dude!
17:48What are you doing, man?
17:50What are you, such a pervert?
17:51It's really weird that, like, every time I'm here, Alex is like,
17:54Raul was verbal assaulting, yelling and screaming towards Alex.
18:00Come on out here. Let me put your freaking eyes out.
18:02Raul, baby, come on.
18:03Alex?
18:04What's wrong?
18:05What's the matter?
18:06It's okay, mom. Go back to bed and check on my brother.
18:08Let's go inside.
18:09You're such a freaking weirdo.
18:10And we would tell him, no, don't do it. Don't do it.
18:13Don't let him crawl under your skin.
18:15I don't care.
18:16I don't care.
18:17I don't care.
18:18I don't care.
18:19I don't care.
18:20I don't care.
18:21I don't care.
18:22Don't do it.
18:23Don't let him crawl under your skin that way.
18:26I can't do this anymore.
18:28Take it easy.
18:29How long do I have to live like this?
18:31As long as you have to. Do you understand?
18:34And we'd say, as long as he's your neighbor and you live there,
18:36that's how long you're going to have to put up with it.
18:38Hey, you creep!
18:40What do I have to do, beat the crap out of you?
18:42Leave me alone!
18:43Raul!
18:44I can't do this anymore.
18:46As Raul's rage grows...
18:48What does he want?
18:49...so does Alex's instinct to protect himself...
18:52Just go back to bed.
18:53...and his family.
18:54Don't worry, I got this.
18:56He said, man, I can't leave my house, I can't turn my back.
18:59I got to keep an eye on this dude.
19:01Mom, please, lower your voice.
19:03Go back inside and go check on them, please.
19:09And Alex would tell us that he was becoming more...
19:15...vigilant.
19:16He felt he was protecting his family.
19:23As far as Raul is concerned,
19:25Alex's hypervigilance crosses the line.
19:28Is that a freaking camera?
19:31Yes.
19:32Alex put cameras up in his house,
19:34used the cameras for surveillance
19:36to make sure he kind of knew where Raul was at
19:39at all times around the property.
19:41That's it.
19:42Hey, Raul, take it easy.
19:43There was like five or six cameras,
19:45and there was one angle that would have covered Raul's residence.
19:48Hey!
19:49You freaking pervert, what's wrong with you?
19:51So obviously he was watching him,
19:53obviously he was spying on him.
19:55Why?
19:56You're going to come out here?
19:58I dare you, come on out here!
19:59He's like, you know, why does he need to see my house?
20:01Shove these cameras up your ass
20:04before I come in there and shove them in there for you!
20:07Alex told us he would see him on the cameras,
20:10and he would just be outside just mad,
20:13yelling and screaming towards Alex.
20:15Stop!
20:16No, this is ridiculous! He can't!
20:18You want him to call the cops?
20:20Like, it's not worth it. It's not worth it.
20:23He'll call the cops, you'll have a confrontation with him,
20:26and you're going to end up losing.
20:28You know what will happen if he calls the cops?
20:30No, no, no, no, I'm not going back to prison!
20:32I'm not going back to prison!
20:34Then watch out! You're better than this!
20:36I can't take this anymore!
20:38You better!
20:39It turns out Raul has a troubled past.
20:42Good. Now go back to the house before you end up in jail.
20:45I'm not going back to prison!
20:48Raul had his demons, definitely.
20:51He, you know, struggled when he was younger.
20:54He ended up getting arrested a couple times.
20:57His criminal history consisted of past incidents,
21:00arrests with drug-related offenses.
21:03But he had been working, he had been trying to clean up his life.
21:07If he was done with that kind of lifestyle,
21:11he was going to change it, and he never looked back.
21:15Now Alex is even more worried about his neighbor.
21:19But he may also have more leverage.
21:21Gotcha.
21:23Well, what's going to happen next?
21:25As far as law enforcement's concerned and the courts are concerned,
21:28it's going to be very hard to restrict people's limitations
21:31and their rights when their neighbor's like this.
21:34Our hands are tied. There's not much we can do.
21:37There is tension festering under the searing California desert sun.
21:42And that's when it all went down.
21:47I was in jail.
21:50And that's when it all went bad.
21:54More people are moving into the neighborhood, seeking peace and quiet.
21:58What they find are battle cries.
22:01It just wasn't the calm, quiet neighborhood that people were hoping it would be.
22:06And it's getting worse by the minute.
22:10Because of Raul's criminal history,
22:13Alex believes living next to him poses a danger to his family.
22:17Alex, his way just changed.
22:21You know, his demeanor, everything just changed.
22:24He started acting different.
22:26Kind of like paint a different picture of himself.
22:29Yo, prison bitch!
22:32You better lock your doors at night.
22:34Who knows what this boy's going to do.
22:36Watch it.
22:38He started kind of throwing that in Raul's face
22:41He started kind of throwing that in Raul's face
22:44and trying to, like, throw everything that he learned about Raul.
22:50He robbed my place. Better watch out for yours.
22:53Also in front of other neighbors by, like, yelling it out.
22:56And I'm trying to degrade him.
22:58Shut your mouth before I shut it for you.
23:01I'm scared. I got a record.
23:04I gotta live with mommy because I can't get a real job.
23:07That's it!
23:09Yeah?
23:10Alex would be like, you just got out of jail,
23:12you're just a piece of s***. That's what he'd say to him.
23:14You think you're tough now.
23:16I think Alex was trying to egg him on,
23:18trying to get a reaction out of Raul.
23:21There's only a certain amount of disrespect a person can take.
23:26Run away, tough guy. Run away.
23:29As far as Raul's family is concerned,
23:33it seems like Alex is hell-bent on getting rid of Raul for good.
23:39Because Raul did have a record,
23:41he said, I know this a**hole just wants me to get in trouble.
23:44You know, he wants me to go out there
23:46and just reciprocate everything he's throwing at me
23:49so that I could end up in jail.
23:51Alex was not trying to get Raul back to jail.
23:54He knew Raul would mess up his own life
23:56and end up back in jail eventually.
23:59Nonetheless,
24:02the feud between these former friends is constantly heating up.
24:07Alex was poking the bear.
24:19Hey! You're blocking me in.
24:21Man, shut up.
24:23I can't even do groceries without you jumping on me.
24:25Alex was upset about where Raul parked the car.
24:28Raul's vehicle was parked in that little median area
24:31between the two properties.
24:33Raul continually parked there.
24:35All I was saying was move your car.
24:37Man, I said shut up.
24:39Get back inside your house, you sad lump.
24:42Or what?
24:44What are you gonna do?
24:46Ain't gonna do nothing. You ain't gonna do nothing.
24:48See, you ain't gonna never do nothing.
24:49I'm tired of you messing with me.
24:51Move it. You're in the way.
24:53Lay off me, man.
24:55What? You think you're tough?
24:57You think you can do whatever you want, huh?
24:59Punk? Snitch?
25:02What's it like on the inside, huh?
25:05I mean, a person can only take so much, you know, bullying
25:08or just trying to instigate something until...
25:11I mean, everybody has a point.
25:13Punk? Spur off, man.
25:15That's essentially enough to make somebody go crazy.
25:17You want it?
25:18Are you nuts?
25:20Get those inside. Now.
25:22Yeah, do what you're told.
25:24What is wrong with you?
25:26Can't you leave us alone?
25:32Cool. Keep it easy.
25:33Listen to your sister if you know what's good for you.
25:35Now, what am I gonna do, huh?
25:37Babe, I don't know what to do. He's doing this,
25:39and I would just be like, let it go.
25:41Just don't bother with him.
25:44Listen to me.
25:45Hey, you keep away from me!
25:46If you react, you're gonna let him win.
25:48You cannot let this guy win.
25:50You stay away from me!
25:51Calm down.
25:52No, no, he's out of my sight.
25:53Raul could do something,
25:55but it were gonna come with some severe consequences.
26:00However, Alex still feels he and his family are in danger.
26:08Alex? Everything okay?
26:10Yes, Mom. Everything's fine.
26:13How's Dad?
26:14He's sleeping.
26:16Ma, if anything happens to me...
26:19What?
26:21He actually broke down and said, you know,
26:23he don't know how far this is gonna go.
26:25Alex looked at it that he wasn't gonna be the one to survive.
26:30Never mind.
26:31Alex still kept his mind on his family.
26:34He said the situation was just getting more out of control,
26:40and Alex wanted to protect himself and his family.
26:45It turns out he's willing to go to great lengths to do so.
26:51Alex purchased the weapons from somebody off of the streets.
26:55That handgun was not registered to Alex.
26:58It was a handgun that was reported stolen out of Texas back in 2011.
27:05And then the second gun was a Armalite AR-15.
27:11And Alex was not gonna give up his life.
27:14He was gonna defend it.
27:21Alex! Alex!
27:26I don't understand how it went from being friends
27:32to having that much anger towards somebody.
27:38The Carbajal and Aguayo families find themselves victims of circumstance
27:42between their son's growing feud.
27:45So it just became a very intense, hostile environment.
27:51But what can you do? You're living next to each other.
27:56Both families are afraid of what will happen next.
28:00Alex was angry that he had to buy a weapon.
28:02You know, that's just not his style.
28:06When you carry a weapon, you're not being a happy person.
28:10You know, you're looking to get into something.
28:13Raul is increasingly losing his cool
28:15and doesn't know when he'll reach his breaking point.
28:18They almost want to, like, compare it to, like,
28:21somebody being trapped in the corner.
28:23That was his pull. Where else are you gonna go?
28:27It all comes to a head on the eve of Cinco de Mayo.
28:32May 4, 2018, I woke up and I had a very bad pain in my stomach.
28:37And I kept telling my husband I just had a really bad feeling that day.
28:43Oh, my God.
28:45Hey, hey, take it easy.
28:47What, you think I did this on purpose?
28:49Coño, falta respeto. Watch your tone.
28:52You need to relax.
28:54Mom was very concerned about her son's well-being, you know?
28:58And I think at that point, she probably even feared for his safety.
29:02Right.
29:03And I need to get to work. You behave?
29:06Well, now I gotta take this off.
29:08Well, now I gotta take this off.
29:13Tension also fills the Aguayo house next door.
29:17And Alex is like, my whole life is changing right now,
29:20from good to bad.
29:27Sometimes you get nervous, and then all of a sudden you see him get mad.
29:33I know he was worried about his brother.
29:35Alex, watch your language in front of your brother.
29:38What's wrong with you today?
29:41I've got stuff to do.
29:48Raul told my parents he was gonna wash his car.
29:51It was May, it was hot, so he just went and kind of put shorts on
29:55and opened up the garage door.
29:58What happens next is caught on the Aguayo security cameras.
30:06Alex is going back and forth,
30:08and he's looking in the direction of Raul's residence.
30:12Hey.
30:14What you doing?
30:19Alex keeps coming out.
30:22Keeps coming out.
30:24He's trying to figure out what's going on.
30:26He's trying to figure out what's going on.
30:28He's trying to figure out what's going on.
30:30He's trying to figure out what's going on.
30:32Keeps coming out.
30:34Keeps coming out of his house, calling him names.
30:37This is repetitive.
30:39He's doing this for quite some time.
30:42You steal that truck?
30:44And Raul's just ignoring him, just washing his car,
30:47and just kind of ignoring him.
30:49Where'd you steal it from?
30:50And then he turns, and Raul looks at him,
30:52and then he's just like,
30:53Screw off, man.
30:54you know, whatever.
30:55And he walks away.
30:57You can see, like, that's happening,
30:59and he's just really trying to make them blow up.
31:02Yeah, you're real tough, bud.
31:05Real tough.
31:06Don't you have to eat?
31:07Hey, your mom's cooking up something.
31:08Let's go, little piggy.
31:10Hey.
31:11Is that the best you can come up with?
31:13Alex is trying to get some sort of reaction from Raul.
31:17You know, obviously planning something.
31:19At least I don't got a record.
31:21Man, get the hell back inside your house
31:23before I beat the crap out of you
31:24and everybody that gets in my way.
31:26Alex just wouldn't let it go.
31:28Couldn't make it on the street.
31:31She had to move in with Mommy and Daddy.
31:34You want it?
31:35Come on, let's go.
31:36He ignored him for a long time,
31:38and then finally, I guess, Raul couldn't take it anymore.
31:40Go back to the gutter, you freaking rat.
31:42Stop!
31:43No!
31:44Stop!
31:45Raul pulls out that shop vac hose,
31:48and he swings it at Alex,
31:51and Alex simultaneously grabs the shop vac hose
31:55with his left hand, pulls out a handgun,
31:58and starts to discharge the firearm.
32:01Alex grabbed his weapon and then just shot Raul.
32:06And the guy jumps the fence.
32:10And he's still shooting.
32:20You can see Raul run into the garage.
32:25And Alex goes in behind him.
32:33That's where he emptied his clip.
32:37Alex discharged the entire firearm.
32:43Alex kind of had like a, like a, oh, sh-t reaction.
32:47Like, what did I just do?
32:50Hey, what's going on, man?
32:52What the hell, what's going on?
32:54My dad heard the shots.
32:57He was following Alex and, like, with his hands up,
33:00like, what did you do, what did you do?
33:04Alex ran back inside of his truck.
33:08And he drove off.
33:12But by this time, my dad hadn't seen Raul.
33:19That's when we received the 911 call.
33:25As paramedics and police race to the scene,
33:29Alex races away.
33:32I couldn't imagine that.
33:33It wasn't something that's in him.
33:37Alex, he's the most kindest person on the planet.
33:43And now he had just took somebody's life.
33:45He is not thinking.
33:49His heart is racing.
33:51So you got all this stuff going on in your head.
33:55Why are you trying to run for your life?
33:58After you took somebody's life.
34:08Where's he at? Right here?
34:09Police arrive at the homes.
34:11What happened?
34:13Along with a neighbor who is a nurse.
34:15They attempt CPR on Raul.
34:18I get a call at about 11.56, and it's my husband.
34:22And he says, hon, something happened to Raul.
34:29And in the background, I can hear the wails of a scream.
34:45Like that sound is like etched in your brain forever.
34:52And he's just yelling.
34:56Which translates to, they killed my son.
34:58And he's just screaming.
35:05He's just screaming and you can hear him tell Raul.
35:11Don't leave me, don't leave me.
35:14Hang on, hang on, don't leave me.
35:16Don't leave me.
35:22Officers, I didn't mean to kill him.
35:23Don't move.
35:24Responding deputies stopped a vehicle just blocks away from the neighborhood in the scene.
35:30Stay down.
35:31And detained the suspect of the incident at that point.
35:34I was just defending myself.
35:35Don't move.
35:36I was just defending my family.
35:38He admits to being the shooter.
35:40He starts to make spontaneous statements that he only acted in self-defense.
35:44Hands up.
35:46He was detained, transported to the station.
35:52We end up arresting him for the homicide.
35:57As Alex is taken into custody, the devastating news spreads to Raul's loved ones.
36:03My mom was at work.
36:05You know, when she got the phone call, she fainted.
36:10I was just going about my day and I got a call.
36:13I was like, what happened?
36:15This happened and he was like, they got him.
36:22And I was like, what do you mean?
36:23He's like, they killed him.
36:33And when I got there, my dad was sitting there.
36:35And he wasn't crying, he wasn't, he was just, you know, no emotion.
36:41In shock, I guess.
36:45Alex maintains he had no choice but to fire on Raul, contending his neighbor was armed.
36:52He attacked me.
36:53That was it.
36:54I was defending myself.
36:55I think as things escalated, Alex did fear more for his parents.
37:02Have you been planning this?
37:03The truth is, I was assaulted.
37:05I defended myself.
37:08When that happens, when somebody come around there, it's you or them.
37:11It's the only thing you're going to have in your mind to defend yourself.
37:14I kept on shooting, I was hit.
37:15I defended myself.
37:17But the footage from Alex's own cameras tells a different story.
37:23We learned right away that there was video evidence of Alex's residence that would have captured the scene.
37:30One of his initial statements, what he said was self-defense, discharged the weapon at Raul.
37:36Obviously the video, when we later got that, that was not true.
37:39When the footage is played in court, it seals Alex's fate.
37:44It clearly shows he was the aggressor.
37:48They played a lot of videos for us.
37:50During the trial, they shared with us the...
37:54The first sheriff officer that arrived, had a cam.
38:01Where's he at? Right here?
38:03That's how we truly found out, you know, what happened.
38:09The guy just kept shooting.
38:12I don't know who shoots somebody like 12 to 14 times.
38:15You don't even do that to like an animal.
38:21You know, this is what happened. I was attacked. It was a fear for my life.
38:23He said he was scared for his life and stuff.
38:25He only shot the guy. The guy was trying to kill me, you know?
38:29Nah, he didn't.
38:30He didn't?
38:31No, he didn't.
38:32You know, he was trying to kill you.
38:34No, he didn't.
38:35He was trying to kill you.
38:36I was trying to kill myself.
38:37He was trying to kill me.
38:38He was trying to kill me.
38:39I was trying to kill myself.
38:40He was trying to kill me.
38:41Nah, that's all bulls**t, you know?
38:44Alex just wanted to get rid of Raul,
38:46and I guess it just led to him having to shoot him.
38:52Alex Aguayo is found guilty of the murder of Raul Carvajal.
38:57Ultimately, after the jury trial,
38:59he was convicted to serve 50 years in state prison.
39:04And then, all of a sudden, you hear 50 years.
39:07It's sad. It's heartbreaking.
39:11I don't feel that Alex got a fair trial.
39:16Yet, for Raul's family and friends,
39:18it's not nearly enough.
39:21Our lives will never be the same.
39:22Our holidays are not the same.
39:24My parents are not the same.
39:26We lost a lot. All of us did.
39:29Not only did we lose Raul physically,
39:31but each one of us,
39:35each one of us lost something.
39:38The new neighborhood is already marred with tragedy.
39:42Alex's family moves away a few weeks after the murder.
39:46As far as the victim's family and suspect's family,
39:49I think they both lost a lot, you know,
39:51both sides, unfortunately, in this.
39:53They lost a brother, a son,
39:55so it's hard on both sides.
39:58Everyone loses in these situations.
40:00Might sound bad, but sometimes the best thing
40:02might just be for one of them to move.
40:04Alex's family never came back.
40:06They packed their stuff and left.
40:08Never saw them again.
40:11My parents still live in the home
40:12that my brother was murdered in.
40:15It was very hard at first.
40:17The next day after the incident happened,
40:21my mom and some of her sisters
40:23and other family members had to clean up the blood.
40:25Thank you again.
40:26Of course. You're welcome, brother.
40:28Alex was a good guy.
40:29We would love to know what happened.
40:31You know, I mean, for him to change so much,
40:33why was he so angry?
40:37I just hope Roland knows that I love him.
40:43And I'll see him again someday.
40:47We lost the life, the life of the party,
40:51his lovingness, everything.
40:54You know, I think I feel at peace knowing that Roland
40:57and I had such a special relationship.
41:01And I think that gives me peace, that gives me comfort.
41:27Sometimes you just piss off the wrong people.
