00:00The long-awaited Kingdom Hearts series has launched on Steam.
00:05Whether you're a long-time fan or someone just stepping into this magical world,
00:09the age-old question arises again.
00:12Is there a Kingdom Hearts game you have to play first?
00:15While some fans have very strong opinions on this subject,
00:18our position is, no, there isn't a correct starting point.
00:22While we can suggest a play order for new fans who enjoy the whole story and have,
00:26it's entirely up to you where you begin with the series.
00:29If, for example, you want to play Kingdom Hearts 3 first because it's the latest mainline game,
00:34or just because you're excited to pal around with Woody and Buzz Lightyear,
00:37then go for it.
00:38Remember, every Kingdom Hearts game is someone's first.
00:42Many lifelong fans didn't start with the original game.
00:44They played later ones and explored the rest of the series afterwards.
00:48However, it is a topic that comes up a lot,
00:50so the Square Enix team has put together a couple of suggested play orders,
00:53with the Dark Seeker saga being the preferred order.
00:56So if you're starting fresh, these are some ways you can explore the series.
01:01So here's our rundown.
01:02Our first suggestion is to follow the story release order of Kingdom Hearts
01:06to experience what's known as the Dark Seeker saga.
01:09You'll start with Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 plus 2.5 Remix.
01:13This collection features six different titles
01:15and introduces the main characters and story of the Kingdom Hearts series.
01:20Kingdom Hearts Final Mix introduces you to the series' protagonists,
01:23Sora, Riku, and Kairi.
01:25After their world becomes engulfed by darkness,
01:27you follow Sora's adventures with Donald Duck and Goofy
01:30after their fated encounter, while he searches for his friends.
01:33As they explore various Disney worlds and defend them from darkness,
01:36he learns what it means to wield the power of the Keyblade
01:39and faces those who seek to take this power for themselves.
01:44After the events of Kingdom Hearts,
01:45we follow Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy into Kingdom Hearts 3 Chain of Memories,
01:49which introduces the sinister Organization XIII
01:52and features a unique battle system
01:54that utilizes the strategic power of cards.
01:58The next game in this collection that you'll want to play
02:00is Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix,
02:02which introduces the fan-favorite character, Roxas.
02:05We dive further into what is Kingdom Hearts
02:07and what Organization XIII wants with it.
02:11This is then followed by Kingdom Hearts 358 Days Over Two HD Cutscene Compilation,
02:16which chronicles the events between Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts 2,
02:19exploring who Roxas is and what Organization XIII's true mission is.
02:25Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix takes us back in time
02:27to before Sora's adventures begin and introduces the Keyblade War.
02:31We follow the adventure of three Keyblade wielders,
02:33Aqua, Ventus, and Terra, in their mission to locate the Master Xehanort.
02:38We are free to select which character's story we would like to play first,
02:41with each of their stories intersecting at various points.
02:44We would like to suggest playing their stories in this order
02:46to understand the story best.
02:48Terra, Ventus, and Aqua.
02:50Completing all their story unlocks the final chapter.
02:54The second collection, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue,
02:58features three experiences which together set up the finale of the Darkseeker Saga
03:02and connects the story to Kingdom Hearts 3.
03:06In Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance,
03:08Sora's quest to become a Keyblade Master puts him under threat like never before.
03:13While Kingdom Hearts Key Back Cover chronicles the story of the Foretellers,
03:17that takes you way back in time to the earliest point in the series
03:20and has major implications for the saga as a whole.
03:25The collection ends with Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep,
03:28a fragmentary passage, follows Keyblade wielder Aqua
03:31after the dramatic events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.
03:35The Darkseeker arc comes to its epic conclusion in Kingdom Hearts 3
03:39and its Remind DLC as Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy
03:43race to foil the plans of the sinister Xehanort once and for all.
03:47Another way to enjoy the Kingdom Hearts series
03:49is to experience the adventures in chronological order.
03:52Here's the chronological playing order.
03:54Although Sora's original Kingdom Hearts adventure was the first game to be released,
03:58there are a few titles that are set earlier in the timeline.
04:01These prequel adventures do an amazing job at fleshing out the lore of the series,
04:05as well as introducing fascinating narrative threads that enrich the other games.
04:09By following the game's own internal timeline,
04:11you get to watch the pieces of the sprawling saga connect.
04:14It's very satisfying.
04:17The Kingdom Hearts games are now available on Steam,
04:19and the Steam-exclusive Keyblade, Dead of Night,
04:22will be available as part of Kingdom Hearts 3.
04:24The Kingdom Hearts games are also available now
04:26on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Epic Game Store.
04:30They're also playable on Nintendo Switch as cloud versions.
04:33We hope all this helps you if you're just setting off on your Kingdom Hearts journey.
04:36If so, you're in for a real treat.
04:38We hope you enjoy them.
04:39Until next time, may your heart be your guiding key.
