Tom Ellis Says a 'Tough Audience' Loves 'Exploding Kittens' — His Family

00:00I got a call about it saying that Netflix are doing a new animated series based on the

00:06very popular card game Exploding Kittens and I was like, I've never heard of that game.

00:11So I talked to my children about it and they were like, Dale, I can't believe you've never

00:14heard of this.

00:15It's like super popular.

00:17So I was like, oh, wow, okay.

00:19And then they sent me some scripts through and I was like, oh, wow, this is really funny.

00:23So that was the kind of initial approach.

00:28And then it didn't take long for me to say, yes, I'd love to do this.

00:31I mean, each session for me, for an episode, I would go in and probably it'd be about two

00:36hours for an episode.

00:39But I mean, that's the strange thing is like my bit in this is literally just doing that.

00:44And then behind the scenes, there's a whole army of people doing the real work on it.

00:50And you know, the process of animation takes a lot longer than live action.

00:54So, you know, I recorded my lines for God Cat like two years ago.

00:58So it takes a while to come around.

01:02But it's also a lovely experience because I got no idea about, you've got your imagination

01:07and that's it when you're doing it.

01:08You've not really got any idea about how it's going to be and how it's going to present

01:12in the end product.

01:14So it's like a big sort of surprise.

01:17And it was a lovely surprise, I have to add, watching this because, you know, you always

01:21wonder how it's going to turn out.

01:22But this was like, you know, I watched it with my kids and my wife, who's a tough audience

01:26and they were laughing all the way through.

01:27So I thought, OK, this is good.

01:29I think the irreverent humor and some of the stuff that is probably more like the adult

01:37because this is this is a show that sort of caters for kids and adults in the best way

01:41that animation does.

01:42I think, you know, you think about the good old Pixar movies and there's always jokes

01:46in there for the adults and then there's jokes in there for the kids.

01:50And this is exactly what Exploding Kittens is like.

01:53But some of the more irreverent adult jokes, I think they got, which I was a bit like,

01:56OK, but I think they just the whole world of it.

02:01But, you know, it's silly and it's fun and you can't help but laugh.
